A mysterious timer clock has appeared on the official site for Grand Theft Auto 2. Yes, that's right; the ten-year-old game.
The clock on the official site seems to be counting neither up or down (the minutes don't change) but the date 'May 22' is clearly displayed underneath.
Could the long-rumoured Xbox Live Arcade and PSN versions of Grand Theft Auto 1 & 2 be just around the corner then? We can't think of anything else it could be relating to - the game's quite old, after all.
Rockstar's UK office was unfortunately unavailable to comment when we picked up the phone (they're probably playing Cops 'n Crooks), but we'll let you know when the time ticks away.

David Cole with DFC Intelligence is betting that PlayStation-loving Europe will soon be switching its loyalty to Nintendo platforms, with the Xbox 360 being left in the wakes of both rivals.
What will Nintendo's success mean for the other platforms? It is important to note that DFC Intelligence is also forecasting strong sales for the PlayStation 3 and, to a lesser extent the Xbox 360. This generation is not expected to be a case of one platform dominating like the PS2 did in the last generation. One factor that will increasingly take hold in Europe is what DFC has labeled the "second car in the garage." In the U.S. over 40 percent of game households now buy two or more of the current console systems. By comparison, Europe has largely been a one car in the garage market. In recent years, that car has been the PlayStation 2. As the game market in Europe grows we expect to see more consumers buying two or more systems (although not to the extent of the U.S.) The Wii is forecasted to be the market leader, but with a market share less than 50 percent compared with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Consumers will still need to play World of Warcraft, Grand Theft Auto IV, games on the go and so on. No one system satisfies all the diverse tastes in today's market.
It appears inevitable that, for the PlayStation 3, Sony will lose a big chunk of its PS2 user base. However, in the long-term, DFC Intelligence believes the PlayStation 3 will be a fairly strong competitor. The biggest loser in Europe is likely to be the Xbox 360. Microsoft has seen its self-proclaimed fall 2007 "greatest holiday lineup in videogame history" come and go with very little impact on the Xbox 360's position in the European marketplace. To spur sales in 2008, Microsoft is being forced to lower the price of a system that is starting to look like a senior citizen as it approaches its third birthday.
The Xbox systems have enjoyed much greater success in the U.K. than in continental Europe. In large part this is because the U.K. does not have a strong PC game market like those found in other parts of Europe. However, as in the U.S. and Australia where intense violence is more popular with gamers, U.K. gamers enjoy first-person shooter (FPS) titles and the Xbox 360 is clearly the leader in that category. Unfortunately, outside of the U.K., DFC sees the Xbox 360 continuing to struggle in Europe.

Two teenagers were arrested Tuesday afternoon on suspicion of trying to steal almost $1,400 worth of the new Grand Theft Auto IV video games from a Best Buy store in Oakdale.
The latest game in the notoriously violent series was released on the same day.
Capt. Jack Kettler said police were called to the store at about 4 p.m. Tuesday. A store employee reported seeing two boys walking out of the store with some merchandise.
Police apprehended two teenagers in a nearby parking lot. They said one, a 15-year-old boy, had eight copies of the video game and faces a misdemeanor theft charge. The other, police said, was a 16-year-old boy who had 15 copies of the game and faces a gross misdemeanor charge.

April 30th, 2008, 23:06 Posted By: wraggster
The public got its first look Tuesday at controversial video game Grand Theft Auto IV.
Multimedia Watch The Video It's jammed full of sex, drugs, and lots of blood-soaked violence, and it's flying off store shelves.
"It's a good game, man. You get to run over cops, kill people, run them over," one man buying the game on Tuesday said.
For some people, that is a disturbing sign of the times.
One of the groups lining up in criticizing the game is Philadelphia's police union.
It's expected to be the hottest-selling video game ever, and it was the reason hundreds lined up at midnight to buy the shoot 'em up thriller, chock full of sex and violence.
"The glorification of killing of any police officer is just wrong. I mean, it desensitizes people to the real mayhem that's going on out on the streets, and we already have a real problem with people not valuing human life," said Eugene Blagmond, of the Fraternal Order of Police.
But that didn't seem to stop gamers from lining up Tuesday, including four police officers in the span of an hour spotted buying the controversial game.
Gamers said the critics' contention that these games could spur violence against cops is wrong.
"It's a way to get out frustration, you know, so that you wouldn't do that in real life, I would like to believe," another man said.
"People don't seem to have a problem turning guns on cops, and this game -- I know it's just a game, but people sometimes have trouble separating reality from fantasy," Blagmond countered.
Estimates are that Grand Theft Auto IV could make upwards of $400 million in its first week alone.

Dr Mike Capps, the president of Epic Games, will be delivering a keynote speech at the GC Developers Conference at Leipzig, Germany.
During the event, taking place over 18-20 August, Capps' speech will focus on the development process of Gears of War 2.
"Epic set the technological bar for next-generation games with the original Gears of War, so we knew we had our work cut for us with Gears of War 2," Capps explained.
Epic Games is the development studio behind the Unreal Engine, the Unreal Tournament series, Gears of War and the upcoming sequel Gears of War 2.
"Epic Games is a major force in the games industry today, from their million-selling franchises Unreal, and Gears of War, to their engine technology which is licensed by hundreds of developers worldwide," said Frank Sliwka, project director of GCDC.
"We look forward to hearing from Dr. Capps on the development of one of the most exciting games of the holiday season, including the challenges they've faced in bringing the game to market," he added.

A man in San Diego, North America engaged in a real-life GTA IV police chase yesterday, after nicking three copies of the game from the local game shop.
Dennis Richard Fiel, 27, entered his local GameStop store in Mira Mesa at about 10:30 a.m. and sprayed employees with Mace, before running off with three copies of GTA IV.
Fiel immediately gained three stars, and the Police were in hot pursuit both on the ground and from a helicopter, chasing the white Toyota pickup truck he used to flee the crime scene.
He was eventually captured at a Japanese BBQ restaurant, where he surrendered to police. Busted.
Stealing GTA IV isn't considered a grand theft, but this bloke probably isn't happy with his felony robbery charges, we imagine.

New released today
For Niko Bellic, fresh off the boat from Europe, it is the hope he can escape his past.
For his cousin, Roman, it is the vision that together they can find fortune in Liberty City, gateway to the land of opportunity.
As they slip into debt and are dragged into a criminal underworld by a series of shysters, thieves and sociopaths, they discover that the reality is very different from the dream in a city that worships money and status, and is heaven for those who have them and a living nightmare for those who don't.
The action thriller Grand Theft Auto IV every gamer is craning their necks for and dying to get their hands on has arrived. This amazing game pushes your next generation consoles to the very limit and yet retained the smooth slick gameplay without glitches or massive loading time. This is one of the games that brings out the true worth of a PlayStation3™ or an Xbox360™.
Although the action, gun fights, drinking and gore are all highly exciting, they do not detract from the actual worth of the story. Criminals are portrayed as criminals, there is nothing glamorous about them, but it is precisely because of this honest portrayal of them that's why the gamers can identify with them. They, too, are people propelled by their desires or vulnerabilities. Liberty City is a place filled with these people, and given life by these people.
Rockstargames' Grand Theft Auto IV combines breathtaking graphics and sounds with a plot that shames even some of the best selling Hollywood movies. The Asian version for Xbox360™ has arrived today, shipping for US$ 59.90 only. The US versions for Xbox360™ and PlayStation3™, both sold for US$ 64.90 only, will arrive on Friday, 2nd of May.
Also arriving on the 2nd of May are the Special editions of the US versions of Grand Theft Auto IV for Xbox360™ and PlayStation3™ and are sold at the same price of US$ 129.90 only.
Aside from the games, Grand Theft Auto IV Signature Series Guide is also released on the same date and is sold at US$ 19.90 only.

A queue of gamers waiting in line at a Gamestation store in South London were treated to a gruesome preview of the game they would soon be playing when a hooded man who had seemingly been waiting in line for the game repeatedly stabbed a 23-year-old male who had been passing by. Around 50-100 people were present at the Gamestation in Croydon when the attack occurred, with members of the queuing public contact the police. The victim was discovered a short distance from the store and was taken to a hospital and treated for multiple stab wounds.
Authorities are currently looking for "a light skinned black man aged about 21, 6ft 5ins tall, of medium build wearing a light grey hooded top," while the mainstream media is currently seeking the best possible way to shock the living hell out of the non-gaming public with the headline for this story. I think we're going to have to give them this one. The assailant just picked a really inconvenient time to go apeshit.

Microsoft has slashed the price of the Xbox 360 in four Asian markets, Bloomberg reports.
Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan all see price cuts, though the biggest is Singapore which has received a 20 percent price reduction on the console, bringing it down to S$499 (£185).
The basic version, says Bloomberg (which we're assuming is the Arcade console) is set to drop by 17 percent to $10,360 (£172) in Taiwan, and by 11 percent in Hong Kong effective today. Prices will fall 5.1 percent to 369,000 won (£187) in Korea.
Last month Microsoft dropped the price of the Xbox 360 in Europe as well, bringing the cost of the Arcade console down to less than a Wii at £159.99.
Since the European cut, sales of Microsoft's console have been reported to have jumped by as much as 36 percent, though whether this will be echoed now in Asia, who knows?

Online retailer Play.com has revealed it has been taking over 80 orders per minute for Grand Theft Auto IV, released today.
Stuart Rowe, chief operating officer for Play.com, has said that the game is likely to smash previous sales records in the videogame sector.
"We're experiencing trading levels similar to what we would see in the run up to Christmas, taking over 80 orders per minute at peak times.
"We have had to recruit extra warehouse staff to work through the night to ensure product arrives on the day of launch," he added.
The company had to resort to a first come, first served basis for the game earlier this month when demand became so strong it could not guarantee delivery on the day of release.
"Grand Theft Auto IV is going to break all previous records when it comes to gaming," offered Rowe.

In an even more obvious move than us writing this GTA IV news story, Microsoft has decided to pimp its exclusive downloadable content on today's big launch day.
"Play Grand Theft Auto IV multiplayer online with your friends starting today over the Xbox LIVE," says the company's statement."Starting this autumn, Xbox 360 owners will also have access to exclusive Grand Theft Auto IV episodes that will provide hours of additional game play."
And that's about it. So far all we know about the 360 exclusive DLC comes from a Sam Houser rant in Edge magazine, where he revealed that Rockstar's mission was to "fry Xbox Live".
"I think the mission packs with the episodes are going to be pretty deep, offering another full-on adventure in this world," the Rockstar boss said. "I think we will be in a position to market them not a million miles away from the way the boxed game is marketed.
"You'll get a lot of content for your money. There are too many stories at the moment of people having the feeling that they're not getting enough for their money in terms of downloadable content."

Microsoft has decided not to publish a new Xbox Live Arcade game this week, and comments on the publisher's Gamerscoreblog suggest GTA IV is the reason.
"There will be no new Xbox Live Arcade title this week, and we anticipate all Xbox 360 controllers will be busy with [GTA IV]," the blog writers, all MS staffers, revealed.
After a few posters moaned about this, online community manager Nelson Rodriguez said, "We definitely understand the complaints".
"There are certainly people who won't be playing GTA IV, and would want to see an alternative on the Arcade, but to be fair, any game released this week will not get a fair chance to reach everyone who the publisher might want to reach.
"There are a ton of games out there to still try, and a publisher who might have released a game this week will probably be thrilled to have the entire public's undivided attention when they do launch."
But this wasn't enough for some, like poster DF, who wrote: "Not everybody likes the series, you know?" Clearly he's not been pigeon-hunting yet. 195 winged rats to go!

Microsoft has popped some Lost Odyssey downloadable content onto Xbox Live.
It's a Triple Bonus Pack that will set you back 200 Points (GBP 1.70 / EUR 2.40), and brings with it a fresh equipment in the shape of a ring, as well as a new dream and a memory lamp to re-view old dreams with.
The ring, Killer Machine, has a trio of level three enhancements that work best against magic-weapon-wielding baddies.
The dream, Shattered Bond, is triggered when you pick up an antique and have it in your possession when you visit the demolished bridge in front of Castle Uhra. You must have collected all the characters for this to work.
Not the secret underground research facility content that Japan was treated to earlier this month, then.
Still, nice nonetheless.

GamesIndustry.biz has learnt that Valve asked Microsoft if it was possible to place its award-winning Orange Box title, Portal, on Xbox Live Arcade for download, but that it was rejected.
"We'd love to do that. Right now it's something we'd love to do. I'd love to sell Portal on Xbox live," said Doug Lombardi, marketing director at Valve. "[But] the platform holders aren't doing that right now. There's a size limit and all kinds of other things.
"We've asked them, we said we were open to it. So it's a decision for the platform holder and how they want to make the games available and how much bandwidth they want to [allow]."
But Lombardi did hint that something might be possible in the future: "I think it's a trade-off, we'll see it one day.
"It always happens once it's been proven and I think it's been proven now on Steam, so I'm sure it'll migrate back to the consoles just like everything else does."
Portal was one of five titles available as part of last year's acclaimed Orange Box release, and won three awards - including Game of the Year - at this year's GDC event in San Francisco.
Microsoft increased the size limit for Xbox Live Arcade titles last March to 150MB, up from its previous limit of 50MB.

Sierra Online has revealed that Assault Heroes 2 will be released for Live Arcade on 14th May.
Developer Wanako will decorate the sequel with bigger weapons - and more of them - plus more destructible environments and a campaign about a third-longer than the original.
Levels are said to be more intricate and will appear in more three-dimensional way, with multiple routes to the bosses blocking your way.
On-foot sections have been tidied up, too, and you can do flashy Jack Bauer-like things such as roll out of the way of vehicles trying to hit you at 40.
Co-op for you and a friend is still in, and you can jump straight to stages you've beaten on your own to avoid replaying them in co-op to get to the same point. Activating linked weapons should be easier, too.

Here's a piece of info that might bugger up your Monday morning; Grand Theft Auto IV, as in that game that's going to be in the shops tomorrow, is totally region locked on Xbox 360.
That means owners of a North American Xbox 360 (that's us) won't be able to stroll into the shops and buy a PAL copy (and vice-versa) - because it won't work. Bugger.
The PS3 version, like all games, apparently works fine in all countries - though we're waiting for confirmation on that.
Although it's left up to developers whether or not it region locks its games on 360, the vast majority of titles are left open to the world.
Even Rockstar's Table Tennis lacks Region barriers, but seemingly the company has had a change of heart with GTA IV (let's face it, if some US shop started selling it early - we'd all be importing if it was region free).

As promised, Xbox 360 owners can now download the SSC Challenge Map Pack for Army of Two.
The Map Pack costs 600 Microsoft Points (GBP 5.10 / EUR 7.20) and consists of four new environments to do some co-operating in, or possibly to race one another in.
As you may remember, the Pack was due out on PlayStation Network in the US at the same time (and duly appeared), but will not be released on the PAL version of the PlayStation Store until next month.
To use the new content, EA/Microsoft advises you to select Versus, Custom Match, then go to Game Type and select SSC Challenge, pick a map and "begin the carnage".
We'll let you know what we think of the maps in an upcoming DLC Roundup of some sort. Probably. It's hard to look beyond this evening's pigeon-hunting expedition in Liberty City at the moment.

Carjack a vehicle and call your favorite escort, it's time for the GTA IV reviews to start flowing in. The embargo on non "exclusive reviews" is over and media outlets are chiming in with initially glowing reviews. Here are some of the first we've seen and we'll add some more after the break.
GameInformer (100/100): "There so much more to appreciate about this game. Its dynamic mission structuring, remarkable sound design, wealth of side content, amazing animation, the list goes on and on. Long story short, I never thought I would see this much content in a game. Grand Theft Auto IV doesn't just raise the bar for the storied franchise; it completely changes the landscape of gaming. Once you play it, you won't look at video games the same way again."
GameDaily (100/100): "Finally, the wait for a true GTA multiplayer experience was well worth it, and the online game modes (mostly variations on deathmatches, car races, car races and self-contained co-op missions) add a lot of value to an already jam-packed game. Multiplayer is not as integral part of the game as it was to, say, Halo 3 or Call of Duty 4, but the ability to play over the entire city map is brilliant. Online matches are accessed right from the game via the call phone, and we'll have a more in-depth take on the game's multiplayer offerings once the game is released and the servers are fully populated."
GameTrailers (98/100): "Grand Theft Auto IV is the sex, drugs, and rock and roll of video games. It's a little less brave and intimidating this time around, but it's also the most refined and polished game in the franchise's history. This kind of sheen is generally reserved for titles with a much smaller scope. It's been one of the marquis games in the industry for years and the addition of a killer multiplayer component puts it over the top. Few games manage to deliver on the hype, but this is one that does."
Eurogamer (100/100): "GTA IV is the 10/10 you were expecting. Almost everything you do in Liberty City would be good enough to drive its own game, and the best parts would be good enough to outrun the competition, but the reason it works so well is that Rockstar has made a game that requires no patience to play. This, as much as its usual coherency and the best script in the series, is what makes GTA IV the best openworld game yet, and why it will take something miraculous to rob it of game of the year status."
Gamespy (100/100): "To be totally honest, it would be very easy to write another 2000-odd words on this game, as we haven't even delved into the hours of television you can watch, the amazingly detailed virtual Internet, the strip clubs that you can visit, the ultra-realistic vehicle physics, and so on. Suffice it to say that Grand Theft Auto IV is a game that could keep anyone busy for a long, long time. Although its got plenty of excellent features, it's ultimately the storytelling that makes it an instant classic, a game unlike any we've played before. As is the case with many great books and movies, you'll want to know what happens to the characters after the game ends, and one can't help hoping that all of their American Dreams comes true."
