Each passing holiday season has become a critical, missed chance for Sony to catch up with the Xbox 360, and it's starting to become silly to say "maybe next year."
According to Microsoft reported retailer data, the Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 3:1 in the US on Black Friday. Needless to say, aside from sales on that particular day, it's probably an indicator of complete 2008 holiday sales for these two competitors.
Of course, the notably absent data was regarding the Nintendo Wii's sales on Black Friday. But our guess is that if Microsoft toppled that giant, even for a day, they would have mentioned it (at the top of their lungs from the tallest mountain they could find).

via Computer and Video Games
When you're finally able to grab a copy of Resident Evil 5 next year, you will find different goodies in the box depending on which console you buy it for.
Capcom has revealed a bunch of console-specific exclusive extras, giving multi-platform gamers a bit of a decision to make.
The PS3 version will come with a special making-of video feature, which was apparently made by Hollywood staff (so hopefully a little better made than some shaky cam footage in a dull motion capture studio).
On the other hand the 360 version will come in a metal case with a soundtrack CD included called the "Biohazard 5 Selection Track", according to Japanese translations of the official Capcom site.
The 360 extras will only come with an initial 'Delux Edition' allotment, and when they run out you'll just get the game on its own. Whereas the PS3's video comes on the same disc as the game, so expect that to be a permanent extra.
Capcom also revealed a special Limited Edition version of the game (pictured), which comes in an even fancier box, packing a 2GB USB memory stick, a 32-page art book, and a waist pouch that resembles one used in the game.
All very nice. Which version will you be opting for if you own both systems?

Developer Ensemble Studios has had a two part challenge: Make a solid RTS for consoles and make it in the Halo universe. No easy task by any means.
The result is the four-years-in-development Halo Wars, the last title from Ensemble. Microsoft is closing the Texas-based studio early next year. To create the title, Ensemble built Halo Wars from the ground up, setting out to make a RTS that pleases RTS players and Halo players.

If you thought you've seen the last of The Last Remnant, Square's recent East-meets-West RPG, you've got another thing coming -- actually, you've got four things coming. Throughout December, Square will be releasing four downloadable expansions to the already expansive title. The first two will drop simultaneously on Dec. 1 for Gold Xbox Live members (Silver members will have to wait until Dec. 8) -- "Challenge Pack 1: Purgatory's Sins" will add difficult new guild tasks to the game, while "The Key of Ancient Ruins" will... unlock some in-game Ancient Ruins.
On Dec. 22 (Dec. 29 for Silver members), Square will release "Challenge Pack 2: The Price of Lies", which will bestow even tougher guild tasks upon the game's more masochistic players. Finally, the "March to War" set, which unlocks three new battle formations and was rewarded to pre-orderers of the title, will be available for everyone to download Dec. 15. It will run players 100 -- the other three expansions will be totally free.

From Software teased their cinematic action game, Ninja Blade, was coming in “early 2009″. They meant really early 2009 since Ninja Blade is scheduled to come out in Japan on January 29. Don’t go into Ninja Blade expecting Otogi 3: Demons in the City, From Software’s Xbox 360 game is totally different. There is a scene where you leap into the air, but that’s just so Ken can slice dragons while he’s falling. If the Tokyo Game Show demo is any indication of what the final game will be like expect a lot of quick time events.
Microsoft is taking care of Ninja Blade in other territories and they haven’t announced a release date yet. However, since Ninja Blade will be done in January and Microsoft has yet to reveal their plan for 2009 there is a chance Ninja Blade will arrive in North America this winter.

November 29th, 2008, 12:11 Posted By: wraggster
This past week, my 360 finally gave up the ghost. It began with an occasional hard freeze, and a day later was freezing every two or three minutes – a tell-tale symptom of impending red rings of death. Unfortunately, my Xbox exhibited all of the symptoms except an actual series of red rings: a problem that, as the Microsoft support agent informed me, meant that my device was no longer covered by the extended warranty. There goes $99. A series of problems sending me e-mails (and later the actual shipping box) have cost me at least a month of playing time ... during the busiest gaming season of the year.
The point is not to complain about my problems per se – I'm hardly the first gamer to have experienced these issues and I'm sure that I won't be the last. But since I haven't been playing, I've had a lot of time to think about the implications of these issues on hardware manufacturers, publishers, developers, and even retailers. Do my problems matter to the businesses that care about me?
By one standard, they clearly aren't as important as I'd like to believe. The 360 hasn't outsold the Wii yet, but it's standing above a respectable 20M units sold despite all of the negative publicity. I paid my $99 grudgingly, but I definitely paid it, and I plan to continue gaming uninterrupted as soon as my box gets shipped back from Redmond. As much as I might grumble, the financial and personal impact hasn't altered my day-to-day behavior significantly.
"I may never get around to playing some perfectly good game simply because of this. "
Of course, this is mainly of interest to Microsoft. The remainder of the players in the gaming industry is probably less pleased: I was planning on purchasing at least 5 games for the 360 this month, including Gears, Fallout, Sonic, Mirror's Edge, and potentially several others. That's $300 in lost revenue for a GameStop to share with the publisher and developer of each of those games, and when you consider the magnitude of the problems experienced by the 360 over the past few years, we're talking about a significant amount of money. At best, I'll get them later (probably at a reduced price); but gaming is a fast-paced industry and the hot game of today is likely to be in the bargain bin next month. I may never get around to playing some perfectly good game simply because of this.
And at the same time, my long-term behavior is likely to change. I didn't buy a 360 at launch out of a fear of this very same problem; in fact, I was reasonably certain that most of the hardware issues had been ironed out by the time I went to my local Best Buy. So when the next Xbox comes out, I'm going to think long and hard about whether or not it's going to make a good investment. And to the extent that I do decide to buy, it's going to be considerably later. This is probably going to ripple down the chain as well; consoles rise and fall based on their publisher support, and to the extent that the consoles launch more slowly than expected, there may very well be a problem.
So what's the answer? I'm not changing much in the near future. I'll still play my 360, and I'll still enjoy it. But there will definitely be an impact on my spending in the future, and I'm less inclined to trust Microsoft for charging me to repair a well-known manufacturing flaw in their already expensive product.
As it happened, I received an e-mail as I typed this, informing me that my 360 had just been received by the support center. Let's be honest here: most of us will be making a purchase decision based on the games that are set for release for a given device, not purely on their technical stability. But manufacturers would be fooling themselves to pretend that each generation represents a clean break with the previous one. Once bitten, twice shy.

In the rare and somewhat disturbing event that Tim Curry's illustrious presence doesn't result in an automatic purchase from you, you might want to test your real-time strateeh-gery in EA's Red Alert 3 demo. It's up on the Xbox Live Marketplace right now, says Major Nelson, who also lists "the game's cinematic opening, 1 campaign mission from both the Soviet and Allied campaigns, and an interactive tutorial" as part of the downloadable snippet.

A retail chain selling downloadable content? What madness does the world find itself plummeting into now? According to a listing on Gamestop's online store, the forthcoming Grand Theft Auto IV add-on episode, The Lost and Damned, can be purchased as an Xbox Live Marketplace token card. The product page indicates that no disc is included in the packaging -- it contains only the download code (nonrefundable!) and a two-sided poster.
The chance to revisit the two-faced posers of Liberty City will seemingly cost you $19.99 when it releases on February 17th, 2009. The Lost and Damned's price has yet to be confirmed by Rockstar.

Jasper, the next version of the Xbox 360 motherboard, has been leaked and apparently it comes with new unannounced goodies. Apart from the rumored 65nm graphics processing unit—the unit uses a 150W power supply, 25W less than before, which signals a lower consumption most probably caused by the reduced GPU footprint—the new units allegedly come with a new south bridge and, surprise surprise, a 256MB flash memory chip for internal storage.
According to Xbox Scene, the new 256MB chip will allow to install the entire new NXE dashboard without requiring the hard drive or any external flash memory unit. It will also allow you to store XLBA games, save gamesave information, or whatever you want. The rest of the motherboard layout stays the same, except for the RAM memory configuration, which changes from the previous version.

Epic Games has released the first title update for its action-packed grunt-a-thon, Gears of War 2. The automagically applied patch addresses delays in public matchmaking (particularly for single- and four-player parties), improves the developer's ability to collect match statistics and fixes one non-hilarious issue which prevented some gamers from playing the Gears of War 2 campaign if Xbox Live was unavailable.
Now, about that Imulsion map ...

via Eurogamer
Rare studio manager Mark Betteridge has told Eurogamer that the veteran Britsoft developer is thinking about making a new version of Killer Instinct - but that it would require a "revolution" to make it worthwhile.
Betteridge, who was lead engineer on the original instalment of the 2D fighter, admitted the franchise was a candidate for revival, following the rebirth of Banjo-Kazooie in Nuts & Bolts, which released earlier this month on Xbox 360.
"Killer Instinct is an IP that is fondly remembered and we may do something with it, but it's a tricky market to be like the old Killer Instinct," he revealed.
"At the time there was Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat and we were thinking, 'how do we make our own area here?' and it came from the combo system. The market after that became more and more specialised. And all you do then is make your user-base smaller and smaller and it disappears [to the point where] it's not really feasible anymore."
However, Betteridge insisted there were still great opportunities in the one-on-one fighting genre to be seized with the right innovation.
"Once a market gets like that then it needs a revolution to bring something new to it and to kick-start a new growth," he said. "It will stagnate for a while and then it needs a real significant change of direction potentially.
"It is a law of diminishing returns to recycle the same game. That's why we didn't want to do that with Banjo just to build a Banjo game that was hi-def. We wanted to do a game that not only provided a different gameplay experience that we couldn't do before, but we wanted to build something that we can then build on to do other titles."
Rare is notorious for teasing fans about forthcoming projects, and recently sparked fresh rumours of Killer Instinct 3 with the release of themed cards for Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise.
Killer Instinct first hit arcades in the mid-'90s, followed by versions for SNES and GBA, with a sequel appearing as a coin-op and on N64. It was famed notably for its stunning visuals and massive combos.
Rare celebrated its 25th anniversary earlier this year, but despite the strength of its back catalogue, creating IP is "primarily our goal", according to production manager Lee Schuneman.
He added: "We want to be forward-thinking as much as we can. Even though we've got a great heritage that gamers love and we love, we want our design team to be thinking for the next thing, what's the next great idea. We need to define our own space on this console and we're only going to do that by using new IP."
"The best way to have success is to build your own area," added Betteridge. "We don't want to chase a genre. We think the best genres are the ones that don't exist at the moment."

We've had some false alarms in the past, but it looks like the first Jasper-equipped Xbox 360s may now finally be starting to make their way out into the wild. While there unfortunately still aren't any pictures of the motherboard to completely put this thing to rest, everything else certainly seems to be pointing in the right direction, including a 150W power supply (25W less than the current models), a manufacturing date of 2008-10-23, an 0843X lot number, and a power adapter that most definitely won't fit in a Falcon console -- head on past the break for a pic of it. Now, anyone feel like cracking open some cases?
