Ubisoft has acknowledged a serious Assassin's Creed 3 bug which is wiping users' save data. The error occurs when users download this week's Hidden Secrets DLC, a compilation of the various pre-order bonus levels and outfits.A number of players have experienced main mission or side mission progress being reset, with the possibility of countless hours of game time lost."We're able to reproduce this issue at the studio and are working on a fix/workaround," Ubisoft Montreal community developer Gabe Graziani advised fans on the official Ubisoft forum."From what we can tell, this problem seems to be rare and should generally only affect a very small number of players. That said, we're taking the speedy and complete resolution of this very seriously."The bug occurs when players download the DLC while playing the game. This is, right now, something that will affect a number of fans as the DLC is only available to Season Pass subscribers through the in-game store (it's not on Xbox Marketplace, at least).Ubisoft issued the following advice:"AVOIDING THIS BUG: Do not load your saved AC3 game while the DLC is downloading in the background. This appears to be the key trigger for this bug. You can do anything else you want to do, just don't load up your saved game and play it while the DLC is downloading."The add-on will be released for non-Season Pass holders next week.

The Xbox 360 certainly isn't suffering from any shortages in the entertainment department, but that's not to say Microsoft's not willing to welcome new app additions to its growing,decade-old ecosystem. Today marks Rhapsody's turn to join the likes of Hulu, Netflix, Crackle and, most recently,WatchESPN on Redmond's Dashboard, bringing its known on-demand music streaming service to Xbox Live -- and, naturally, it'll be available at no additional cost to current Gold and Rhapsody subscribers. Rhapsody is set to arrive on Xbox Live today, but fret not if you don't see the application right away, as it may take a little while before it pops up on yourconsole.

You've got your fancy new iPhone 5, and you've got the Xbox SmartGlass app, but who wants those silly black bars on the sides? Certainly not you, aesthetic savant, which is why you'll be glad to hear that Microsoft's latest update to the SmartGlass app optimizes it for use with the iPhone 5's taller, 16x9 screen. Aside from device support expansion, the update also includes the ambiguous "bug fixes." No broken bugs for you, only fixed ones! The Xbox SmartGlass app launched earlier this year for Windows Phone 8, Android and iOS, with a staggered rollout across the various mobile ecosystems. Beyond just allowing for basic Xbox 360 control via mobile, SmartGlass propagates rich content to your second screen in-tandem with some software, from games to streaming video.

This afternoon, Microsoft's Larry Hryb (aka Major Nelson) announced the availability of several new Xbox Live apps for gamers across the globe. Customers in the good old US of A can add Rhapsody and Blip.TV to their menu of fine media streaming cuisine. Canadian Xbox Live subscribers now have access to both IGN and French entertainment site TOU.TV; merci beaucoup! Customers in Germany picked up Amazon'sLoveFilm movie streaming service, while folks in the UK received an update for the application that makes finding content easier. Rounding out the Xbox Live world tour is the Netherlands, where subscribers can now scoop up the RTL XL app for quick access to the network's programming. Before you install that shiny new tile to your console's dashboard, it should be noted that most of these apps require paid subscriptions -- but you probably knew that already.

Activision shooter series hits milestone quicker than ever, but are purchasers playing it as much?
[h=3]Activision Publishing[/h]Activision, Inc. is a leading international publisher of interactive entertainment software products....
activision.com
While a number of analysts believe the Call of Duty series is on the decline, Activision has the series off to a quicker start every year. Today the publisher announced that Call of Duty: Black Ops II broke $1 billion in worldwide retail sales in 15 days.
That beats last year's Modern Warfare 3, which needed 16 days to cross the $1 billion sales threshold. However, a quicker start doesn't necessarily mean more sold in the long run. The original Black Ops is believed to be the best-selling entry in the series, but Activision didn't announce it had reached $1 billion in worldwide sales until 43 days after launch.
While gamers bought the new Call of Duty faster than ever, they may not be playing it quite as much as in the past. Activision said that since the game's launch, Black Ops II players have racked up more than 150 million hours online on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, or about 10 million hours per day since launch. When the original Black Ops hit $1 billion in sales, Activision reported gamers had played online for more than 600 million hours across all platforms, averaging almost 14 million hours per day since that game's release.
Earlier this week, Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia said that retail channel checks had sales for the latest Call of Duty tracking down double-digits year-over-year. Bhatia said that after its first year on shelves Black Ops II sales could wind up down 15 percent from the pace set by Modern Warfare 3, which itself was down an estimated 5 percent from the original Black Ops.

December 6th, 2012, 10:34 Posted By: wraggster
New multiplayer DLC for Resident Evil 6 has been revealed by Capcom, with Xbox 360 grabbing exclusivity of the content for the time being.
Three new multiplayer modes including 'Predator' (a one versus all affair), 'Survivors' (which adds to regular versus mode by turning killed players into zombies), and 'Onslaught' (where two players try to oulast one another surviving against on separate waves of enemies).
The modes will be offered individually for 320 MS Points ($4) each, or can be purchased bundled together for 720 MS Points ($9) when they arrive on Xbox Live on December 18th.
No word if, let alone when, the packs are coming to Playstation 3. RE6 has yet to arrive on PC in any capacity as well, though Capcom addressed why earlier this year. The game's Steam page currently lists it for a 2013 release.
Capcom Unity has also confirmed a patch for both PS3 and Xbox 360 will arrive around the same time as the DLC later this month.

December 6th, 2012, 10:34 Posted By: wraggster
Financial news site Business Insider has questioned Microsoft’s ongoing ability to keep throwing money at its Xbox platform.
“Almost one year ago today, we laid out the nightmare scenario for Microsoft that could lead to its business collapsing,” the site wrote. “After laying it all out, we concluded, ‘fortunately for Microsoft, none of this is going to happen’.
“We were wrong. A lot changed in the last year. Microsoft's nightmare scenario is actually starting to take hold.”
And Xbox is one of the businesses that it believes may pay the price.
“The Xbox was never going to make up the slack, and Microsoft can no longer afford to keep investing in it,” it added.
“In a year of relative gloom, Microsoft's Xbox has become a big bright spot for the company. Kinect is great technology, people are still buying the console, and it's been a great entry point for Microsoft to take over the living room. But, for a company like Microsoft, Xbox isn't enough.
“Microsoft had $21bn in operating income last year. The Entertainment and Devices division, which is home to the Xbox had $364 million in operating income. So, as nice as Xbox is, it's not going to be enough to boost Microsoft if the rest of the business collapses.”
It’s certainly true that at least part of Xbox’s success has come from Microsoft willingness and ability to throw huge investment into the project.
There’s more to it than that, of course. Microsoft succeeded where others have failed in establishing its platform in the console sector by offering a pioneering online service, excellent hardware and fantastic third party titles. But none of that would have been possible without the computing giant’s formerly bottomless pockets.

Castle Crashers developer says XBLA essential to existence of indie console community
John Baez claims indies owe their success on current generation consoles to XBLA.
A member of Castle Crashers studio Behemoth, Baez claims that in terms of Indie console games, Microsoft has handily beaten the competition.
I think without a doubt the indie console community would not exist as it does today if Xbox Live Arcade had been dropped after the original Xbox iteration," he told the Official Xbox Magazine.
"No other console hardware manufacturer has had the success of downloadable games that XBLA has had and many smaller developers have shared in that success."
Castle Crashers has been a runaway success, selling over 2 million copies on XBLA.

Court rules FRAND patent means no injunction
A US judge has ruled against Motorla, which was seeking an injunction to have sales of the Xbox 360 banned.
The trial began two weeks ago in Seattle, but is only the latest battle ground in what has been an international campaign of litigation.
Motorola has launched several suits over Microsoft's alleged infringement of its fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) patent, and has won an injunction in Germany.
Microsoft claims the price tag is too high for the "standards essential" patents.
US District Court Judge Robart ruled against Motorola, saying the company should pursue royalties rather than attempt to ban products outright.

The Walking Dead retail version has been pushed back a week in North America, now scheduled to launch on December 11. The standard and collector's editions were originally slated to hit in physical form on December 4. We assume the undead don't shuffle as quickly as Telltale originally thought.
The standard edition includes all five episodes on-disc for $30, while the collector's edition runs $70 and features the full game along with the first 48 issues of the comic in an exclusive version of The Walking Dead Compendium One, all wrapped up in a special box.
The Walking Dead will be available at all participating retail locations for PS3 and Xbox 360, but the PC version is sold only at Best Buy.

Groupon has posted the rare gaming-centric deal. For the next two days, you can purchase a 4GB Xbox 360 S console with included copies of Forza Motorsport 4 and Alan Wake for $200. If you feel it's a good enough deal to buy in bulk, you can purchase up to three through this promotion.
This exact bundle was introduced during the holidays last year, albeit with a 250GB console. Also of note is the included copy of Alan Wake, which is not a physical disc but rather a download code. Consider it the tutorial puzzle preamble to Wake's nightly meandering through the Pacific Northwest.

Microsoft is seeking a TV producer capable of "creating a whole new category of cutting edge experiences built for Xbox 360, Kinect and Xbox Live".
According to a job ad spotted by OXM, the successful candidate will hold "substantial experience... on a number of known TV IP".They'll also possess "substantial proven experience in managing the line production on medium to large scale broadcast shoots", "familiarity [with] the finance and business models inherent within TV production", and "experience... delivering end to end product designs (concepts, scripts, pitch materials etc)".
It was rumoured last month that Microsoft is developing a low-cost alternative to Xbox 720 designed to provide streamed access to core entertainment services. It will reportedly arrive next year in the form of a set-top box, and the technology behind it may even be incorporated into a licensed Xbox television set.
Whether that's true or not, Microsoft's job ad clearly suggests that the firm's intent on boosting the amount of in-house TV content it produces.

Prolific animation house contributes to 343 Studios' weekly Spartan Ops series
Glasgow animation outfit Axis has parternered with 343 Industries on the Halo 4 episodic series Spartan Ops.
The company has created cutscenes and other CGI elements for the first season of Spartan Ops, which offers weekly releases of a game based around the extended adventures of Halo vessel UNSC Infinity.
Spartan Ops consists of ten animated episodes, offering over 1,200 CGI animated shots, and is being directed by Axis Animation's co-founder and tech director Stuart Aitken.
“Spartan Ops was an absolutely unique project, with a unique schedule and unique challenges,” said Frank O’Connor, franchise development director at 343 Industries. “Axis stepped up to those challenges with imagination and energy, and more importantly, a wonderfully collaborative vision of the story we wanted to tell. Working with our writers, our cinematics team, and a dizzying plethora of tools and assets, they became a seamless extension of our narrative group - and we look forward to continuing our relationship and creative partnership in the future.”
“What makes this such an incredible opportunity is that this is full CGI movie-style storytelling and character development within the rich and exciting world of Halo,” added Aitken. “We’ve collaborated at every level with 343 Industries throughout the process to create a truly immersive cinematic experience.”

Bungie's Destiny has existed in one form or another since at least 2009, a new discovery in Halo 3: ODST indicates. The above image shows a poster found inODST, which portrays a planet within close proximity to a large white sphere, with the message "DESTINY AWAITS" scrawled above. The similarities between this image and the recently leaked Destiny concept art is undeniable, especially the title screen-esque image obtained by IGN.
Former Bungie employee and Halo series level designer Vic Deleon hasconfirmed the connection, exclaiming that the secret had "FINALLY BEEN FOUND!" on Twitter. In light of these events, we've decided to dig even further into the annals of Halo lore by running the entirety of Halo: The Fall of Reachthrough an anagram construction algorithm and seeing what we come up with. Should that prove fruitless, we'll start decompiling the code for Pathways into Darkness.

When Halo 4 launched way, way back on November 6, only those that purchased the game's Limited Edition were granted access to all eightmultiplayer Specializations; normal players could only make use of two. As of today, however, a slightly greater number of people will be able to utilize the other six classes originally reserved for the cool kids.
Codes to download "Specialization Priority Alpha" are currently being emailed to anyone that participated in Halo 4's multiplayer prior to November 20,Kotaku reports. The DLC acts as a key that unlocks Engineer, Tracker, Rogue, Stalker, Patherfinder and Operator Specializations, all of which grant unique armor and abilities after Level 50.
For anyone that doesn't meet that criteria, well, you can always make your own unique armor out of cardboard and duct tape. Other players won't be able to see it, granted, but you'll know. And, in the end, isn't that the important thing?

Motorola's hopes of enforcing a German-won sales injunction against the Xbox 360, Windows 7 and other products have yet again been dashed -- a Federal judge has taken Microsoft's side. Judge James L. Robart granted a motion declaring that Motorola Mobility isn't entitled to injunctive relief, effectively blocking bans based on the firm's H.264 streaming and (previously dropped) WiFi patent complaints. The court had been sitting on the motion for nearly a year, but for Microsoft, the final word is worth the wait: Motorola "has not shown it has suffered an irreparable injury or that remedies available at law are inadequate to compensate for its injury," the court said, noting that Microsoft "will pay royalties under any license agreement from the time of infringement within the statute of limitations." Basically, Motorola will recoup all the scratch it's complaining it lost anyway, so no harm, no foul. Just a giantlegal headache.

Atari's celebrating 40 years of arcade classic Pong today by releasing ... another version of Pong. Pong World is being dubbed "the first-ever official new Pong game on iOS" (despite our search of the App Store dictating the contrary), but more importantly, it's totally free and it's already available on the iOS App Store (see gameplay below the break). The iPhone / iPad / iPod Touch game started life as one of many entries in Atari's "Pong Indie Developer Challenge," which pitted devs against each other for $50K and lead representation on the big four-zero celebration.
Should the free game not be enough for you, you could always vie for one of the crazy sweet portable Xbox 360s (seen above) on Atari's Facebook page. Why yes, that is a custom LCD screen attached to a modded Xbox 360, which also happens to resemble a classic Atari console. And yes, we agree, it is totally sweet.
