Microsoft touts some great numbers for its Xbox business in the US
Microsoft has just announced that Xbox 360 closed out 2012 as the best-selling console, selling another 1.4 million unita for the month of December. That represents more than double the amount of the second place console in the US in the month of December, and it's the 24th consecutive month Xbox 360 has held the number one spot in the US.

Microsoft boss Phil Harrison says it will be hard for the likes of Steam and Nvidia to launch mass-market games consoles.
Both firms have announced plans for PC-based consoles in the home, including the new ‘Piston’ and ‘Shield’ devices.
But Harrison says it can take thousands of pounds and ‘very deep pockets’ if these consoles are to compete with the likes of Xbox, PlayStation and Wii.
He said: “CES is always very interesting. But entering the hardware business is a hard thing to do. You need to have deep pockets. Hardware can be successful but it’s rare to get new hardware to scale. I’m talking tens or hundreds of millions.
“It’s about having a supply chain and a distribution model, it takes thousands of people to make a reality.”

Microsoft has shown off a proof-of-concept Xbox system called IllumiRoom at CES 2013 in Las Vegas.
The system uses Kinect and a projector to augment the area surrounding the television screen with projected visualizations.According to Microsoft, IllumiRoom can "change the appearance of the room, induce apparent motion, extend the field of view, and enable entirely new game experiences."
The demo video below shows effects such as falling snow and explosions being projected into the living room. The video was captured live and is not the result of any special effects added in post production, Microsoft says.

Microsoft touts NUads success, notes that "you can expect more investment from us"
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
Xbox Live users may not be thrilled with the presence of more ads on the popular online service, but the results have been very encouraging for Microsoft and the company has indicated that it intends to ramp up its video advertising on Xbox Live.
Microsoft specifically said that it's seen "double-digit engagement results of the first NUads experience," especially when the company created interactive polls for Xbox Live users to vote in. The company kicked off NUads in the fall of 2012 in North America and the UK and saw participation from firms like Subway and Toyota.
"When we launched NUads, we redefined the 30-second spot," said Ross Honey, general manager of Xbox Live Entertainment and Advertising. "These results show that NUads is a real breakthrough in TV advertising, and you can expect more investment from us when it comes to this new ad format and video advertising in general."
It's clear that Microsoft will be seeking to implement more ads with more partners, and advertisers seem to love the engagement they're getting with consumers whether through polls or Xbox Kinect.
"Consumers want a relevant and engaging experience when watching TV," said Dionne Colvin, national media manager, Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. "NUads was a new format for our advertising, but we saw an opportunity to try something new, and the results exceeded our expectations."
"We're thrilled with the results of our first NUads experience," said Kathleen Bell, director of Marketing, Subway Restaurants in Canada. "We're always looking for new ways to engage with our fans and deliver a customized experience to them. Taking part in this exciting program has given us the ability to further target our audience and get real-time feedback from them through a new and interactive platform."

The console sector is at a crossroads, and a look at the numbers behind Xbox 360 and PS3 make for uncomfortable reading.
According to numbers presented by former EA and Sony man Ben Cousins on Kotaku, between them Xbox 360 and PS3 have left an $8bn black hole in the coffers of Microsoft and Sony.
Specifically, using financial reports from the pair it is claimed that despite its tremendous success, Xbox 360 has cost Microsoft a total of $2.996bn. The news is even worse for Sony, with PS3 having registered a total loss for the company of $4.951bn.
Microsoft was open about its willingness to throw its money at Xbox when it made its first foray into console gaming in 2002. But ten years down the line and so severely out of pocket, that appetite can surely last for only so long.
Cousins uses the data to argue that consoles as we know it are nearing extinction.
“What I think will probably happen is that, as smartphones and tablets continue to get more and more powerful (and they are increasing in power faster than any other class of device), and as more and more publishers start to actively target those ‘mainstream console gamers’ with mobile games, more and more of those people will gradually move their gaming hours and dollars away from console gaming to their mobile devices,” he stated.
“Without this huge group of people buying consoles or console games, the console platform holders will no longer be able to make enough money to justify developing, marketing and manufacturing the devices.
“It doesn't matter that there will ‘always be a market for consoles’ among the hardcore, because the console model as we know it relies so much on the money from the ‘mainstream console gamers’.
“In the future, I see gaming as having two main markets: A) Mobile devices like smartphones and tablets will serve the biggest market—covering kids, casual gamers and the mainstream console people. B) The core and ultra-core gamers would be served by PC gaming, which will be smaller than mobile, but that will continue to grow.
“Many of the old-school PC gamers I know that moved to playing games on Xbox over the last 10 years are coming back to PC because of free-to-play and indie games, controller and TV support, as well as incredible digital distribution on platforms like Steam.”
Indeed, the 2013 arrival of Valve’s Steambox and, to a lesser extent, dedicated Android platforms like the Nvdia Shield, any new console launches are going to find themselves up against far sterner competition than either Microsoft or Sony would likely of envisaged when they began designing their machines.

Microsoft's SmartGlass and Microsoft's Halo 4 apparently aren't quite getting along on Windows Phone 8 devices. Using SmartGlass, Halo 4 players can normally access their stats and other info about their android supersoldier using the long-established Waypoint service -- except for Windows Phone 8 users, apparently. A forum thread dating back to Halo 4's November launch highlights the issue -- as Xbox.com forum user "Scion Eon" puts it: "Whenever I try to log into SmartGlass on my phone while playing Halo 4, I am immediately greeted with a message that says 'Your device is missing certain required features.'" As it turns out, Mr. Eon isn't the only one experiencing said connectivity issues -- specific to Windows Phone 8 devices -- and Microsoft's aware of the situation.
"We are aware that there is an issue with the Xbox SmartGlass experience for 'Halo Waypoint' on Windows Phone 8 devices, which may prevent users from accessing Halo 4 player stats," a Microsoft rep told us this afternoon. Thankfully, Redmond's also taking care of a solution. "We are actively working on a fix and expect to have a solution within the coming weeks. We appreciate your patience as this gets resolved and apologize for any inconvenience this causes," the statement reads. Of course, should you want to access Halo 4's Waypoint functionality on SmartGlass before that fix, you can always use Microsoft's competitor's devices. But then who'd do that?

You'll soon be able to take your Xbox Live account to a new country
Microsoft will soon allow users to transfer their Xbox Live accounts between regions with a shorter turnaround time, anonymous sources have toldNeowin. Currently, the process can take up to six weeks, during which a user is completely locked out of their account.
The pilot program only allows holders to migrate their accounts once every three months. Your gamer tag, achievements, Gold subscription time, and Microsoft points will all move with the migration.
Certain services are region-locked, meaning apps related to those services won't transfer over. Your Lovefilm app won't be coming to the United States with you. Neowin also states that the new Xbox Music subscriptions will also not survive the transition and remaining time will not be refunded.
There's no word on when Microsoft will actually launch the new process.

Crysis 3 is unlikely to be the last in the series… but it could turn out to be the series’ last first person shooter.
"At this point I don't want to give anything away," Crytek producer Michael Elliot Read told OXM. "But I think the Crysis franchise itself has life left in it. Whether it's in a different game type format, whether it's expanding upon this, it's hard to say. That's going to be up to the designers at the end of the day.
"Crysis was always intended to be a trilogy and I think that over that time we've built a really cool universe. We've done a fairly good job at maintaining that, so I think in terms of the universe, we have a lot more life left in that to go back and try some unique stuff.
"Whether it's FPS or not I have no idea, but there's definitely a future in the franchise."
The Crysis series has always performed well on a critical basis but has never been able to match this commercially, despite making the switch to console in 2011’s Crysis 2.
Crysis 3 will be released on consoles and PC on February 22nd.

Xbox Live Arcade advergame slash Avatar masochism engine Doritos Crash Course has some new premium DLC available today. The City Lights DLC adds ten new courses to Doritos Crash Course, spanning Las Vegas and London, plus new versions of the Japan levels found in the vanilla game and new Achievements to unlock – all for 160 MS Points ($2).
Doritos Crash Course is the winner of the Doritos "Unlock Xbox" challenge, which sought to give budding game designers a bulletin board to lay out their ideas; the best would then be chosen and have their games made. Crash Course is the brainchild of Jill Robertson, who won a hefty sum of cash for the killer idea and managed to best out the other top contender, Justin Carpenter'sHarm's Way. Minecraft dug deep on New Year's Eve to reach 5 million sales on Xbox Live Arcade before the close of 2012. The news is maybe not surprising given the franchise's prolificacy across the board over the last 12 months, including453,000 sales on Christmas Day alone, but the achievement still represents a momentous way for developers 4J Studios and Mojang to see in the new year.
Not that there's time for 4J Studios to rest on any laurels, as the team is off its festive break and back at work remedying some of the problems encountered with Title Update 7. The developer says a bug-fixing patch is being released later this month.

Microsoft is in the process of testing a tool that would make migrating Xbox Live accounts to a different region considerably easier, according to new reports.
Currently, migrating an account to a different region is a laborious process which can take up to a month. However, tech site NeoWin reports the new method will move an account in just a few clicks. The tool can be used once every three months and will move a user's Gamertag, achievements, points and remaining time on a Gold subscription.
However, some content and settings, region specific items and promotional material will not be transferred. Subscription services such as Xbox Music subscriptions will also be exempt.
Microsoft has acquired home-entertainment tech startup R2 Studios to join its Xbox division, the startup owns patents for controlling electronic devices and interfaces in the living room.

Razer's Onza Xbox 360 controller is very, very nice. Sure, it's got an unbelievably long, non-detachable wire sticking out of it, but its build quality is top notch and its ultra-clicky face buttons are a pleasure to use. In the company's second Xbox 360 controller -- the Sabertooth -- Razer's focusing on the tournament gaming crowd rather than simply outfitting its Onza with "Tournament Edition" specs. That aside, the Sabertooth retains the quality we've come to expect from Razer products. Oh, and that crazy long wire is thankfully detachable!
It's apparent from first glance that the Sabertooth is intended as such, given the six extra (programmable) buttons found on the shoulders and back of the controller, and the tiny OLED screen found along the bottom (allowing for the programming of said buttons). Considering that a regular Xbox 360 controller comprises 12 (!!) buttons not counting the d-pad, adding another six and an OLED screen is ... intense, to say the least. While we didn't have occasion to test the programmability, we can definitively say that the Sabertooth's other functions are just as solid as with the Onza. The analog sticks are as good or better than a standard Xbox 360 controller, the d-pad is an improvement over the Onza (which was already an improvement over the dismal d-pad included on most Xbox 360 controllers), and the triggers / shoulder buttons are appropriately springy and responsive. There's even a silly backlight for several face buttons, should you be playing video games in a cave (you can opt to turn off the backlight, too -- we certainly did).

Details are expectedly light on this one, but The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Microsoft has acquired R2 Studios, a startup focused on home entertainment and home automation founded by Blake Krikorian (best known as the co-founder and former CEO of Sling). According to the WSJ, Krikorian and a "small team" will be joining Microsoft, with the company's Xbox division apparently the main focus of the deal. The news also follows reported acquisition talks R2 has had with both Apple and Google, although Microsoft's winning bid hasn't been revealed -- it does unsurprisingly include some patents, though. For its part, Microsoft is staying mum on the deal, although R2's current focus (including a home control app for Android) would seem to be a natural fit for Microsoft'sSmartGlass efforts.

The fist shot in the next-gen console battle has seemingly been fired.
Microsoft’s community voice Major Nelson has, without any hint of explanation, gone live with a countdown on his blogthat leads up to E3. The only text included is thus: “And it’s on…”
Having at one stage planned an E3 2012 reveal for its new console, strong sales of Xbox 360 (particularly in North America) saw Microsoft decide to give its machine another year.
However, a terrible year for the core games industry has highlighted the folly of this move and both Microsoft and Sony are expected to reveal their next-gen machines this year.
Microsoft has now laid its first card on the table by effectively announcing an E3 reveal. The question now is whether Sony will take the bait and lift the lid on its machine pre-June.
“And it’s on” indeed.

'And it's on' says Larry Hryb as timer counts the days till E3 2013
Microsoft’s Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hryb has begun a countdown to E3 2013 on his blog potentially teasing the announcement of the next Xbox.
Hryb, who acts as Microsoft’s community voice and is director of Xbox programming at the company, has not given any explanation for the countdown which clocks the milliseconds till the event, but simply uses the phrase “and it’s on”.
The next Xbox, codenamed Durango, has been expected for some time, and many believe 2013 will be the year Microsoft makes its move publicly into the next generation of consoles.
E3 2013 will take place on June 11th, 158 days from now, at the LA convention centre in the US.
Microsoft had been tipped to announce their new console at last year’s expo, but no such reveal was forthcoming. Sony has also yet to unveil the PS4, although dev kits are rumoured to have been shipped to studios.
