The new year is on the Forza Horizon (ho ho ho) given that January 1, 2013 sees a bunch of new downloadable cars come to Turn 10 Studios' racer. OK, that's definitely the last time we'll use that joke this year. 2013 is an entirely different matter.
The January Recaro pack features six cars, including the 2012 Cadillac Escalade ESV, 1983 GMC Vandura G-1500, 2012 Lotus Exige S, 2012 Lexus LFA Nürburgring Edition, 2005 Mercedes-Benz SLR, and the 1995 Ford Mustang Cobra R. It's priced at 400 MSP, but Season Pass holders get it for free, along with the 2009 Pagani Zonda Cinque Roadster as a bonus treat.

The new Star Trek made by Digital Extremes (The Darkness 2) now has a firm release date: 26th April 2013.This was announced yesterday but I missed it because of mince pies.If you really can't wait and want to place a pre-order then you'll be rewarded with an Elite Office Pack. Stuffed in are extra costumes for Kirk and Spock as well as a couple of weapons: a Starfleet Type 4 Stealth Sniper Rifle and an Academy Phaser.The Star Trek video game has promise. We've seen it a couple of times - most recently at E3 - and the signs are good. The game won't ape the new Into Darkness film either; it's designed to fill a story-hole between Star Trek (2009) and its sequel.

Microsoft has said that it's aware of and actively hunting for Halo 4 cheaters using the headless Spartan exploit.
Players have reported encountering headless Spartans in multiplayer games, with the offending Spartan seemingly lacking any armor.According to Kotaku, this is achieved using an unofficial mod, which can only be applied using a modified Xbox 360.
Microsoft has issued a statement to inform players that in regards this cheating and will issue bans, and that while the cheaters appear headless, their hit boxes remain intact.
"We are aware of the issue and have already taken action to identify and ban the accounts of these modders and cheaters," said an MS spokesperson.
"We want players to know that while the mod makes a player's head and armor appear to be invisible, the hit boxes are still intact, so competing players can still defeat them as usual. While the problem was very isolated, we will continue to diligently identify and take action against all offenders."

Ubisoft exec Tony Key on pitfalls of having an annual franchise and the marketing differences in the US and Europe
[h=3]Ubisoft[/h]ubisoft.com
[h=3]Ubisoft Montreal[/h]ubi.ca
Ubisoft has put vast resources into the Assassin's Creed series, to the point where there are multiple Assassin's Creed titles in development at any one time in an effort to make the games “bigger and better every year.” While the series has been annualized, the publisher's senior vice president of sales and marketing Tony Key said that Ubisoft remains hyper-conscious about avoiding an “off year” release of Assassin's Creed.
“You want to avoid the appearance of a glorified add-on pack and every publisher is guilty of that at one time or another in this day and age,” he said. “But now, the bar has just gotten too high for that in AAA gaming. That goes with the marketing too, by the way. The resources to do AAA marketing are bigger than they ever have been. So the top games are selling more and the other games don't make back their money.”
The marketing of Assassin's Creed III was an interesting case for Ubisoft, as the focus has been noticeably different in the US as compared to the UK and Europe. Key indicated that this was natural, given the setting and how different cultures approach the setting of the American Revolutionary War.
“There were definite tonal differences between the ads for Assassin's Creed III in Europe as opposed to America. Ultimately, we're just trying to tell our story that's relevant to the audience,” detailed Key. “To people in Europe, you'll get a different response than in America. Our idea is to act locally and make a relevant message for the consumer; we're not trying to mislead and are presenting a message that's relevant to the audience. I don't want to shove a Founding Fathers ad in the face of an Italian consumer and that's the conclusion our Italian counterparts came to."
“One of the things to realize is the American Revolution is not something that's been explored extensively [in games], so there's a difference between that and World War II. Without all those pop culture references, it gave us a clean slate to not have to deal with perceptions of what it was. Our goal was to make it cool and part of pop culture. We made people think about a war that's exploited in the media. Again, we did see people saying, 'why is the marketing different here in Europe?' but we need to keep the message simple and relevant - you can't talk to every culture the same way, not in the way that makes them want to play the game. You have to consider a different message for a person in another country and it's not unique to Ubisoft or even this industry.”

As part of its "countdown to 2013 deals," Xbox Live has Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and its downloadable content available for half off today only.
That means the Games on Demand version of last year's installment in the Call of Duty franchise, Modern Warfare 3, is available for $30. Its four DLC packs are 600 Microsoft Points ($7.50) apiece.
Oddly, checking Amazon, Modern Warfare 3 is currently $54.99, which does make this Xbox Live special an actual deal (for once). Meanwhile, this year'sBlack Ops 2 is $49.99 from the e-tailer.

Rage's first bundle of DLC, "The Scorchers," is available now on PC and Xbox 360 for $4.99/400 MS Points, with the identically priced PS3 version dropping with this evening's PSN update. The package adds a new clan, new weapons, new areas to be angry in, a new "Ultra-Nightmare" difficulty level and the added ability to keep playing the game, even after the story has ended.
We're sure at least some of that stuff is represented in the new screenshots below, but we can't get past the weird gross fungus guy to check. Eugh.

First Xbox Live free-to-play game reaches seven-figure player base in two months
Happy Wars developer Toylogic is a big believer in "the more, the merrier," as the studio today announced the Xbox Live Arcade game has topped 1.2 million players worldwide. The game launched in October as the first free-to-play title to appear on Microsoft's downloadable storefront.
While the game operates on a microtransaction-driven business model, the "free-to-play" moniker has one caveat. Currently, the game is only playable for Xbox Live members with a Gold subscription, which sells for $60 a year.
The developer also announced a new update for the game rolling out today. The holiday patch adds a number of seasonal decorations to the game, as well as a "special challenge" co-op boss battle mode that will only be available for a limited time. The update is also intended to improve matchmaking and online stability.

The US military and Microsoft are trying to simplify therapy for injured soldiers
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
Microsoft and the United States Air Force are testing the Kinect as part of a home therapy physical suite program for injured soldiers. Microsoft will also be discussing the project with Army's Communications-Electronics Research, Development, and Engineering Center, according to reporting by Defense News. The Kinect hardware is partnered with Infostrat's ReMotion360 physical therapy software.
“Microsoft is committing R&D and marketing resources to ensure that the [Defense Department] community is aware of the capabilities of the product, as well as the breadth of our partner community, which includes the system integrators,” said Microsoft director of public sector solutions Phil West. “The targeted scenarios include therapy-related functions, but they also span training and simulation, interactive user interfaces, and so on.”
The project is part of Microsoft's efforts to use the Kinect outside of the consumer market, with focuses on enterprise and public sector utilization. Other defense-related organizations, including Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization, Army Medicine, the Navy's Bureau of Medicine, Lockheed Martin, SAIC and CACI, have looked at the inexpensive motion-tracking capabilities of the Kinect for different purposes.
Microsoft is also looking into using the Kinect to connect post-traumatic stress disorder sufferers with group therapy sessions.
“They can use avatars, which allows anonymity, but also allows for representatives who are therapists or licensed psychiatrists to connect with them,” West said. “Therapists can say, 'I know who you are because I have your case file. No one else in the room has to see in your face.' It gives a way to engage and talk through problems while preserving anonymity.”

Microsoft says it has resolved an issue which resulted in a number of Halo 4being unjustly banned from accessing some parts of the game's online component.
While the issue set the Halo Waypoint forums alight earlier this week, the platform holder claims that less than 200 players were affected by the problem.Microsoft told Kotaku: "There was a situation yesterday (Sunday) in which less than 200 Halo 4 users were being incorrectly banned from accessing certain parts of the game (not banned from Xbox Live as a whole), and we have since resolved the issue.
"All players accounts impacted are working as normal. For more information, please go to the Halo Waypoint forums here."
The bans were believed to somehow be linked to the recent release of Halo 4 DLC the Crimson Map Pack.
