As first-person shooters have evolved, they've transitioned from using Nazis as the bad guys to more modern organizations, such as the Taliban. Two recent games, Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Medal of Honor: Warfighter, have both shown the country of Pakistan in a very negative light, and now shopkeepers in the country are beginning to boycott the games. 'Saleem Memon, president of the All Pakistan CD, DVD, Audio Casette Traders and Manufacturers Association, said he had written to members ordering them not to stock the controversial games after receiving dozens of complaints. ... The latest installment of the Medal of Honor series opens with American Navy Seals coming ashore in Karachi docks on a mission to destroy a black market arms shipment. But when their detonation sets off a second, bigger explosion they realize they have stumbled on a much bigger terrorist plot, sparking a global manhunt. A chaotic car chase through the city follows amid warnings that the ISI — Pakistan's intelligence agency — is on the way. Mr. Memon added there was a danger children would be brainwashed into thinking foreign agents were at war inside Karachi, possibly leading them into the arms of militants. "These games show a misleading idea of what is happening in the city. You don't get the CIA all the way through Grand Theft Auto," he said.'"

Look, we don’t really understand this stuff. But there’s noise coming from people that do which suggests this latest Xbox 720 tech leak is the real deal.
The numbers come courtesy of VGleaks. We shan’t try and editorialise these – just take a look at the list:
CPU:
- x64 Architecture
- 8 CPU cores running at 1.6 gigahertz (GHz)
- each CPU thread has its own 32 KB L1 instruction cache and 32 KB L1 data cache
- each module of four CPU cores has a 2 MB L2 cache resulting in a total of 4 MB of L2 cache
- each core has one fully independent hardware thread with no shared execution resources
- each hardware thread can issue two instructions per clock
GPU:
- custom D3D11.1 class 800-MHz graphics processor
- 12 shader cores providing a total of 768 threads
- each thread can perform one scalar multiplication and addition operation (MADD) per clock cycle
- at peak performance, the GPU can effectively issue 1.2 trillion floating-point operations per second
High-fidelity Natural User Interface (NUI) sensor is always present
Storage and Memory:
- 8 gigabyte (GB) of RAM DDR3 (68 GB/s)
- 32 MB of fast embedded SRAM (ESRAM) (102 GB/s)

Next-gen console to feature 8 CPU cores running at 1.6ghz, 8gb DDR3 RAM and 12 shader cores
Documents purportedly showing the hardware specifications for Microsoft's next Xbox console have been leaked.
With only a few months until the rumoured E3 reveal of the console, codenamed 'Durango', the leak comes with a certain amount of weight to it.
The documents come from VGleaks.com, and describe an 8-core machine with 8 Gigs of DDR3 Ram.
The processor is of x86 architecture with a 32 KB L1 instruction cache and 32 KB L1 data cache for each 1.6 GHz core.
The cores are broken into two modules of 4 with a 2MB L2 cache between them for a total 4MB L2 cache.

As E3 and the expected announcements of new consoles from Sony and Microsoft draw ever closer, website VGleaks has posted what it claims are specs for the next Xbox. Codenamed Durango, Microsoft's new console will contain an AMD-provided CPU with 8 cores running at 1.6GHz apiece alongside 8GB of DDR3 RAM. The machine will also use a GPU running at 800MHz, and feature a built-in hard drive. The structure reportedly draws from AMD's cost- and power-efficient "Jaguar" designs aimed at the laptop and tablet market.
Durango will also include a "high-fidelity" natural user interface (NUI) sensor. This would suggest that the console has some kind of built-in Kinect functionality, though the inclusion of a dedicated Kinect port seems to indicate that Kinect peripherals will still be available. Also of interest is the capacity for HDMI input, which Digital Foundry speculates could be used for recording or importing video from external sources like cable boxes and personal cameras.
DF offers up some more context for the leak as well, noting that there could be a significant performance gap between the new Xbox and Sony's next PlayStation, specifically with regards to its graphics processor. That's based on the blueprints and specs, mind you - we won't be convinced until we see competing real-time demos of that ballroom dancing scene from Final Fantasy VIII.

Detailed new tech specs for Microsoft's next-generation Xbox, codenamed Durango', have emerged online in alleged leaks.
According to VGleaks, Durango will be powered by an 8-core CPU clocked at 1.6 GHz - widely tipped to be from AMD - and an 800-MHz graphics processor with 12 shader cores "providing a total of 768 threads", a capable of a peak raw processing performance of 1.2 teraflops (1.2 trillion floating-point operations per second). The console is said to be packing 8GB of DDR3 RAM - as previously hinted by developers - supplemented with 32 MB of fast embedded SRAM.
The disc drive is apparently a Blu-ray drive, capable of reading 50GB Blu-ray discs at x6 read speeds, and an internal hard drive of unspecified capacity.
The console will also reportedly come with "Kinect multichannel echo cancellation (MEC) hardware" which we assume will work hand-in-hand with the next iteration of the Kinect motion sensor bar, also tipped to be included out the box.
An accompanying diagram of what's claimed to be a map of the Durango's internals (pictured) reveal more nuggets of information. It looks like the Kinect will get its own connection aside from the system's USB 3.0 jacks.
More interestingly, there's mention of a 'HDMI 1.4a in', which suggest that the Durango may be capable of receiving a video signal from another device -such as a cable/satellite TV box - with the possible ability to record.
Much of these specs back up the claims of Xbox World magazine, which used its penultimate issue to publish an eight-page feature containing 'everything the mag knows' about Microsoft's next-gen console plans.
Here's the full reported specs list:
CPU:
- x64 Architecture
- 8 CPU cores running at 1.6 gigahertz (GHz)

A US business analyst has claimed that Microsoft’s inability to adapt to market changes means that its “failure is already inevitable”.
And chief amongst the victims of this downfall will be its entertainment division, which is of course home to Xbox.
“The entertainment division will be spun off, sold to someone like Sony or possibly Barnes & Noble, or dramatically reduced in size,” Forbes contributor Adam Hartung stated. “Unable to make a profit it will increasingly be seen as a distraction to the battle for saving Windows – and Microsoft leadership has long shown they have no idea how to profitably grow this business unit.”
Hartung went on to predict “enormous layoffs over the next three years”, with as many as half of its employees being shed. He also expects a closure of its online division as Microsoft continues to plough resources into battling iOS – a battle that Hartung unsurprisingly thinks it cannot win.
“Microsoft makes more than 75 per cent of its profits from Windows and Office,” he added. “Less than 25 per cent comes from its vaunted servers and tools. And Microsoft makes nothing from its Xbox/Kinect entertainment division, while losing vast sums in its on-line division.
“No matter how much anyone likes the non-Windows Microsoft products, without the historical Windows/Office sales and profits Microsoft is not sustainable.
“Failure is already inevitable. At this stage, not even a new CEO can save Microsoft. Game over. Ballmer loses. And if you keep your money invested in Microsoft it will disappear along with the company.”

source: bunnie_ @ bunniestudios.com] I am joining siftdna.org in a moment of silence to mark Aaron Swartz’ passing. On January 25, I will bring down my blog for the day to honor his contributions and mark the tragedy of his passing. Aaron’s treatment by MIT is not unfamiliar to me. Back when I was a graduate student there, I extracted security keys from the original Microsoft Xbox video game console. I still remember the crushing disappointment of receiving a letter from MIT legal repudiating any association with my work, effectively leaving me on my own to face Microsoft. However, in my case, the faculty of my then-lab, the AI lab, were outraged by this treatment. They openly defied MIT legal by publishing my work as an official AI Lab Memo, thereby granting me greater negotiating leverage with Microsoft. Microsoft, mindful of the potential backlash from the court of public opinion over suing an openly legitimized academic researcher, came to a civil understanding with me over the issue.

Microsoft's quest to become king of the living room bycontinuing the expansion of its console's entertainment services just grew a little more today. The Redmond-based company has announced that NHL GameCenter is now available toXbox Live members with a Gold subscription, delivering great news to hockey fanatics ahead of the already controversial 2013 season. Regardless of lockouts and all that, though, theNational Hockey League application's set to bring plenty of content to the Xbox Live folk, including real-time scores and stats, a Season Central hub that shows you the league's schedule and, naturally, the ability to watch replays and live games (as long as you shell out the $50 fee for the 2012-2013 season, of course). Per Microsoft, NHL GameCenter is available "around the globe," however countries like Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland don't appear to have made the cut. The rest of you, meanwhile, can download the app starting today.

Following confirmation that Splinter Cell: Blacklist's US release date has been delayed, Ubisoft has confirmed a UK release date of August 23, 2013.
The release was confirmed via way of a new trailer, and represents a delay from the previously pencilled Spring 2013 release window.Labelled "the most ambitious Splinter Cell" yet, Blacklist sees Sam Fisher (now voiced by actor Eric Johnson) as leader of the newly formed 4th Echelon unit: a clandestine unit that answers solely to the President of the United States.
The game is the first title developed by Ubisoft Toronto and will feature single player, co-op and Spies vs. Mercenaries modes. There's still no word on the rumoured Wii U version of the game, which was listed online by US retailer Best Buy last year.

As the blockbuster-packed Q1 takes shape, EA is ensuring that Dead Space 3 and Crysis 3 stand out with ‘triple-A’ marketing campaigns and pre-order incentives.
For Crysis 3, EA and developer Crytek have readied a special ‘Hunter Edition’ of the title, and is also running a series of pre-order initiatives with retailers.
Select stores can offer the Brawler Pack or the Stalker Pack to retailers, while EA is offering the Overkill Pack via its EA Origin download store.
But EA’s big retail promotion is available via GAME.
“We have been running a pre-order incentive with GAME where any consumer that pre-orders Crysis 3 will also receive a free downloadable copy of Crysis 1 for the platform of their choice,” said Will Graham, senior product manager on Crysis 3.
“Obviously Crysis 3 is of significant importance to EA and Crytek and will have the heavy weight above-the-line campaign to support the more core elements.”
Crysis 3 and Dead Space 3 will also benefit from significant above-the-line activity, with TV and digital advertising part of the mix.
“As one of EA’s first new titles of the year we’ll be launching Dead Space 3 with a triple-A campaign across TV, online and at retail,” said Alice Brandvik, product manager at EA.

Select games studios across Europe are working on "the next generation of motion control" with new development kits, CVG has learned.
According to a games developer familiar with the situation, Microsoft has already briefed a number of studios on the next phase in its motion control initiative. Future Xbox plans are so tightly guarded, however, that the source has not seen the development kits in person. It is not yet clear whether Microsoft will use technologies similar to Kinect for its next-gen motion control plans.
Previously leaked documents drafted in 2010 suggested that Microsoft was planning to double-up on Kinect's capabilities by using 'stereo sensor imaging' - a new technology that uses two separate cameras and microphones to create "full-body hi precision" motion control for multiple players at the same time.
The tag line in the document was "closer, wider, deeper".
The report added that a "dedicated processor", improved microphone, and enhanced RGB cam means that 'Kinect 2' will allow for "four players, sitting or standing" as well as sophisticated technology that can register props such as baseball bats.
Microsoft has sold about 18 million Kinect units, according to the most recent data.
In July last year it began recruiting for work on 'next gen natural user interface'.
In August a Twitter user appeared to have leaked a sample image of Kinect 2 running on a Durango (new Xbox codename) development kit. The image shows two users interacting with Kinect and what appears to be an increased amount of depth and movement data.
The image appeared to suggest that the next Kinect can track individual fingers and the shape of clothes.
In 2011, Sony Worldwide Studios boss, Shuhei Yoshida claimed that existing motion control technologies were "in their own 8-Bit era" - meaning that he felt such devices had significant scope to improve.

Microsoft will place Skype at the centre of a whole suite of online-capable communication devices, CVG has learned.
A person familiar with the matter said Microsoft will be "consolidating all their communications technology" around the Skype platform. This means that Skype will become the default chat service on the next generation Xbox console as well as on PC and tablets, the person said.He added: "You might jump to the conclusion that we'll see asynchronous voice and video messages in next-gen Xbox Live".
Microsoft's $8.5 billion acquisition of Skype in 2011 was marked as the software giant's largest ever acquisition in its forty year history. The corporation has since opened its own Skype division within Microsoft, headed up by Skype's former Chief executive Tony Bates.
In November, Microsoft announced it was preparing to close its instant message chat service MSN and replace it with Skype's messaging tool.
A recent job advertisement revealed Microsoft was seeking a user interface designer for the "next gen Xbox". The job location was said to be at Microsoft's UK-based Skype offices.
"The team you'll join is responsible for Skype in the living room (broadly the home), across various devices but with a focus on the large screen and the next generation of Xbox," the job ad reads.

Microsoft's throwing open the doors on Xbox Live account migration worldwide for its Xbox 360 consoles, today announcing that XBL accounts are now transferable from region-to-region. That includes everything in your Gold level account: Achievements, virtual monies, Gamerscore, and that gorgeous Avatar. Previously, moving from one country to another meant walking away from the Xbox Live-based identity you'd grown so accustomed to -- a real shame, especially for folks who'd stocked up on Xbox Live Points during holiday sales (ahem). Of course, some regional restrictions still apply when you migrate your account -- some services, games, subscriptions, and other digital content disappears depending on regional availability. Microsoft may've opened its borders, but digital content license holders still won't.

Ubisoft will release the latest instalment of its popular Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell series this summer.
Splinter Cell: Blacklist will arrive on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on August 23rd in the UK, the publisher has confirmed to MCV. That's three days after the August 20th release date that was announced for the US today, according to IGN.
Blacklist was announced at E3 last year and was originallyplanned for a Q1 2013 release, but the game has now been pushed back to the summer.
It once again puts players in the stealth suit of Sam Fisher as he attempts to unmask and defeat the terrorist groups blackmailing the United States.
The last Splinter Cell game was 2010's Conviction. A Splinter Cell movie is also in the works.

The next PlayStation will be announced to the world before E3 in June but after the Destination PlayStation event in February, industry sources have told CVG.
In a new feature analysing the reveal date possibilities for the so-called Xbox 720 andPlayStation 4, CVG has predicted that Sony will likely hold a one-off industry event during GDC week to reveal its new console. However, Sony Japan may not want the system to be first revealed on a stage in San Francisco, and so a 'PlayStation Meeting' event outside of GDC remains a possibility.
Either way, industry experts believe that some features of both the next Xbox and PlayStation will be discussed openly during the Game Developers Conference.
Michael French of industry publications MCV and Develop said the reveal was "likely because both Microsoft and Sony have to get developers on-side".
"In 2005 Microsoft didn't announce the Xbox 360 at GDC, but they did discuss the 'HD era' in great depth. I remember they even gave out HD TVs to developers who attended the speaker session."
French said a similar forward-looking GDC keynote was made by Nintendo at GDC 2005, with the company discussing the Wii's processor tech.
"The reason why this is so important is it plants the seed in the wider development community about what tech the machines will use and how to get the most out of them.
"It wouldn't be a surprise if Microsoft or Sony completely focused their GDC talks on one aspect of the systems, like cloud technology. The consumer press materials will likely be saved for E3, but I expect some early information to be revealed at GDC."
Meanwhile CVG has been informed by development sources that the next Xbox will be announced in some form before E3, but further leaks of information are not likely. In the analysis of the console's reveal, CVG expects the next Xbox to be revealed late in May.
