Grand Theft Auto V will be released worldwide on September 17, publisher Take-Two has announced. The date constitutes a significant delay for the hotly anticipated Xbox 360 and PS3 title, which was previously expected to launch this spring.Rockstar founder Sam Houser said: “Grand Theft Auto V continues to push the series forward in new ways; Rockstar North are creating our deepest, most beautiful and most immersive world yet.“We are very excited for people to learn more about the game in the coming months.”Disappointing stuff, of course, but perhaps not that surprising: GTA V’s spring release was rapidly approaching and no release date had been announced. There’s still no news on a PC version of the game, either. In the 20 minutes since Take-Two’s investor relations department announced the delay the publisher’s share price has fallen by over four per cent on the Nasdaq exchange.

DirectX 'no longer evolving as a technology'
Microsoft is phasing out its XNA development framework, according to an e-mail allegedly sent to a number of developers.
As reported by CVG, according to a blog postpublished by Action = Reaction Labs CTO Promit Roy, who has previously worked at Microsoft, Nvidia and Day 1 Studios, said that in the e-mail Microsoft confirmed that it will retire the framework from its MVP Award Program.
In the e-mail Microsoft also states that DirectX is “no longer evolving as a technology” and that XNA Game Studio is "not in active development", and as a result XNA would be axed as of April 1st 2014.
The move raises questions about Microsoft’s future involvement with its DirectX tech in future.
“The XNA/DirectX expertise was created to recognize community leaders who focused on XNA Game Studio and/or DirectX development,” read the e-mail to developers.

The re-releases of Cyber Trooper Virtual-On and Virtua Striker are restricted to Japan, Sega announced today. The Sega AM2 duo are coming to Japan's PSN and XBLA on February 13, but unlike Sonic the Fighters, Virtua Fighter 2, andFighting Vipers, the three games they were originally teased alongside, Japan is as far as they'll go.
That's sad news for fans of soccer and/or giant robots (which surely includes everyone), but you can still enjoy the Sega AM2 fighters on XBLA and PSN for 400 MSP/$4.99.

The Medal of Honor series is now "out of rotation," EA announced during its third quarter financial call. Following Medal of Honor: Warfighter's poor commercial and critical reception in October, EA is taking Medal of Honor out of commission.
"The game was solid, but the focus on combat authenticity did not resonate with consumers," EA COO Peter Moore said. "Critics were polarized and gave the game scores which were, frankly, lower than it deserved. This one is behind us now. We are taking Medal of Honor out of the rotation and have a plan to bring year-over-year continuity to our shooter offerings."
EA Labels president Frank Gibeau said EA missed the mark, and the marketplace, with Medal of Honor: "We're in a hit-driven business where it's about what you can build in a certain period of time and really deliver for the marketplace, and frankly we missed on Medal of Honor. And we take responsibility for that."
Gibeau continued, "If you look at Medal of Honor as a specific case, it was really about a hit missing."
EA's remaining shooter repertoire includes the Battlefield and Bad Company franchises.

Shooter fans who've wanted to show their skills (or endure peer judgment) in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 through a live broadcast have usually had to go the YouTube route. That's fine for many, but some gamers will want to serve their own kind above all -- so it's with some relief that Treyarch is adding built-in streaming to the more game-focused Twitch video service. The new option will send both live audio and video from Black Ops 2 as long as there's an active Twitch account, as well as share word of exploits through Facebook or Twitter. Anyone committed enough to have a Call of Duty Elite subscription can also get a peek at a player's stats. Neither Treyarch nor Twitch has said exactly how soon they'll flick thelivestreaming switch, although Wii U owners are once again left high and dry when Twitch support is limited to PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 3 owners.

65 per cent of DLC sales in GameStop stores are for Microsoft’s Xbox 360, the retailer has revealed.
PS3 accounts for 28-30 per cent, with “other devices” accounting for the rest. Expect the bulk of those latter sales to be claimed by Steam, which is unsurprisingly gathering momentum.
"I would say that Steam is gaining in significance," GameStop’s director of digital content Brad Schliesser toldGamasutra. "We did extremely well in the Steam summer sale.
“They’ve been a fantastic partner, coming together with an agreement to sell the currency. They've also promoted the currency on their platform. I think they also are seeing the benefit of being able to reach out to customers that aren't able to pay with a credit card."
As well as stressing High Street retail’s capacity for expanding the market reach for digital content sales, Schliesser also revealed that the retailer has plans to streamline its DLC purchasing process.
Currently GameStop customers buying DLC, much like GAME customers in the UK, are actually purchasing a code that can then be input into their consoles to access content. The goal, however, is to have DLC instantly added to a user’s account the moment it is purchased in-store.
"We thought we'd have to have that in place," he added. "Making this a little easier for consumers is the icing on the cake. Our goal on this is 'let's make it a better process for the consumer'. Our goal in 2013 would be to get one partner to convert to a 'push to box' model."

Microsoft’s home console is less than 200,000 total UK unit sales behind Nintendo’s current-gen leader and catching up fast, says a report on CVG.Xbox 360 sold over four times its Nintendo counterpart in 2012, says GFK ChartTrack. Video games console sales dipped by a third last year, but Microsoft’s console outsold its rivals by a “significant margin”, says the report.Nintendo DS remains the UK’s best-selling console, followed by the PlayStation 2. Wii is currently in third, though it looks set to be overtaken by Xbox 360 in fourth. The picture is a little different globally. In September 2012, Nintendo said that Wii had sold 97 million units, Microsoft revealed it had shifted 70 million 360s in October 2012 and Sony stated that it had ‘sold in’ 70 million PS3s in November of last year.

Computing giant attributes 29% drop to fewer console sales
Microsoft has reported a 29 per cent drop in Xbox revenues in the last three months of 2012.
Its Entertainment and Devices Division, the department which houses Xbox, had 11 per cent lower revenues of $3.77 billion compared to $4.24 billion in the same quarter last year, though operating income was $596 million in comparison to $517 million last year.
The main issue for the division was the large drop in Xbox revenue.
“Xbox 360 platform revenue decreased $1.1 billion or 29 per cent, due mainly to lower volumes of consoles sold and lower video game revenue, offset in part by higher Xbox Live revenue,” Microsoft’s statement in its quarterly report read.
“We shipped 5.9 million Xbox 360 consoles during the second quarter of fiscal year 2013, compared with 8.2 million Xbox 360 consoles during the second quarter of fiscal year 2012. Video game revenue decreased, primarily due to $380 million of revenue deferred associated with the Video Game Deferral.”

Sites report hardware stories from fake Microsoft 'insider'
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
Several major gaming press sites have been hoaxed by a disgruntled gamer who pretended to be a Microsoft employee who seeded rumours about next-gen hardware.
Posing as an anonymous insider, the hoaxerdistributed an email claiming to know details of the next Microsoft console as well as a dedicated Surface-based gaming tablet which was dubbed the X-Surface.
The mail was sent out to a number of gaming publications early yesterday morning. Eight hours later it was being circulated as a valid news piece, although qualified as a rumour by most who published it. Before long, it had spread to many major gaming specific and technology sites, a ripple-effect which the hoaxer aptly describes as "Chinese whispers."
In the flurry of leaks and rumours surrounding the forthcoming next generation of home consoles, nearly every site has covered at least one set of leaked specifications or another, including GamesIndustry International. By taking advantage of the whirl of information, pulling various stats from different reports to form a nebulous but semi-convincing whole, the hoaxer exposed one of online reporting's major flaws: the rush to be quickest to publish.
"It's all about being first," the hoaxer wrote on a Tumblr page exposing the fake emails. "To get such news out (whether you believe it or not) before any other publication does, will guarantee you page impressions, and that all-important advertising revenue. Gaming 'journalism' is completely broken.
"By tagging a post with 'rumour', most writers/editors believe they can get away with spreading false information for their own benefits. They are the only ones to gain from such practices, whilst the gaming fans end up with speculation and, sometimes, outright lies."
Microsoft declined to comment on the situation.

Studios losing out due to Microsoft paying out revenues based on US dollar instead of the Yen
Japanese developers are losing out on XBLA revenue due to the Microsoft Points conversion rates policy, the president of arcade shooter studio G-Rev has claimed.
Taking to Twitter, as translated by XBLAFans, Hiroyuki Maruyama said that the strong yen and weak dollar was proving a problem for developers in Japan as XBLA and DLC were regarded as export products.
“A strong yen and a weak dollar is very damaging to us because XBLA and DLC are ‘export products,’” he said.
“That’s why Japanese developers avoid making games for Xbox 360. When we released Strania on XBLA, the rate was 80 yen per dollar. If Japanese people buy our game in MSP, we receive in dollars!”
At the time of making the statement, the 80 yen was worth roughly one dollar (Although this has gone up to approximately 89.5 yen per dollar at the time of writing). This meant that while 1,600 Microsoft Points would be worth $19.99 in the US, it would cost Japanese consumers just under $25 when converted.

Black Ops 2 has unsurprisingly emerged as the most played online game on Xbox last year, according to a list compiled by Microsoft's Larry Hryb.
Ranked according to the number of unique players connecting to a game's online portions each day, Black Ops 2 edged out Activision stablemate Modern Warfare 3 in second and Microsoft's own Halo 4 in third. Minecraft took fourth place and the original Black Ops fifth.
As well as placing highly on the service's most played list, Minecraft was also the most downloaded game from the Xbox LIVE Arcade, followed by Trials: Evolution, The Walking Dead, Pinball FX2 and Counter Strike: Global Offensive.
As well as charting so highly on these two metrics, Mojang's voxel masterpiece has clearly exerted its influence over the indie chart, with five of the top ten indie downloads owing some debt to the studio's iconic title.
Full tables are below. It's not made explicit whether downloads from the same user for various episodes, or individual tables in the case of Pinball FX2, count separately towards the total.

DmC: Devil May Cry beat back those critical of the reboot's look by launching earlier this month and turning out to be a game that everyone actually liked.
Still, Capcom aims to address one of the major complaints from the masses, having announced new DLC that brings the 'Classic' look for lead character Dante to the latest in the combo-focused action horror series.
Along with the Devil May Cry 3 version of Dante, the add-on will also include 'Dark' and 'Neo' costumes for dressing up your protagonist.
The content will run $4 (320 MS Points) and will be made available next Tuesday, January 29th. Additionally, the pack is being offered for free as a pre-order bonus for the PC version landing later this week.
