Xbox One will retain the region restrictions that feature in theXbox 360, it has been confirmed.
Limited region restrictions apply to both the Xbox 360 and PS3, although its enforcement is at publishers' discretion, and the vast majority of 360 and PS3 games are released on region-free discs. Microsoft has, however, confirmed plans to retain region locking functionality in its forthcoming Xbox One."Similar to the movie and music industry, games must meet country-specific regulatory guidelines before they are cleared for sale," a Microsoft rep told Digital Trends.
"We will continue to work with our partners to follow these guidelines with Xbox One."
Region locks allow developers to restrict the use of software and digital services to specific continents. For example, software purchased in the United States will not work in the UK or Australia if its publisher so chooses.
Similarly, the United States Xbox Live may feature a different line-up of downloadable titles to its UK and Australian parallels.
Only a handful of PS3 games are restricted regionally (although the PS3's Blu-ray movie playback is completely region locked), but Sony is yet to confirm its policies on the matter with PS4.
Activision community manager Dan Amrich last year released a videoexplaining the need for region-locking.

Here is what comes out of the interview given to Game Industry in which Chris Lewis (Vice Chairman Xbox Europe) after much talk of the new "One XBOX" says Microsoft marketing projects for the "XBOX 360" for 12 months future and beyond. The third-party vendors also offer a lot of content, in order to live another XBOX 360 for several years, because there is a large machinery in place, "says Chris Lewis. Sooner or later, the Xbox One will eventually have park developed enough that publishers do not focus on it. Gx-mod via an interview with Game Industry

Speaking with Redmond Game Studios and Platforms GM Matt Booty, Ars Technica reports that cloud computing will boost performance in games designed for Microsoft's Xbox One.
While latency-sensitive actions will be handled by a user's Xbox One console, Microsoft claims its cloud architecture can pre-calculate elements like lighting and physics modeling, leading to increased in-game performance.
This additional processing is made possible by the 300,000 servers that will power Xbox Live after the Xbox One's launch, up from the 15,000 servers currently supporting the service. Booty notes that "[for] every Xbox One available in your living room we'll have three of those devices in the cloud available."
Xbox One games that support the feature will remain operational in the event of an Internet connection outage, though developers will need to address the possibility of reduced performance. "In the event of a drop out [...] the game is going to have to intelligently handle that," Booty tells Ars Technica.

Despite all this Xbox One whoopla going on, Microsoft hasn't forgotten about its other horse in this console dog and pony show. In fact, the company hopes to continue to move substantial numbers of the Xbox 360 over the next five years, according to senior vice president of Interactive Entertainment Yusuf Mehdi.
"We believe over the next five years we can break a 100 million unit installed base," Medhi said during an interview with OXM. "That's something we're shooting for, it's not a financial plan as such, it's just rough numbers if you will. To sell another 25 million, half of those will probably come from replacements, but half will come from new buyers."
"The way we'll break into those segments," he continued, "is by hitting new price points, getting new classes of entertainment to come with the Xbox, and breaking into new customer segments." We're not quite sure what a new class of entertainment for the Xbox might mean, or what customer segments remain untapped after such a long console cycle, but "new price points" sure does pique our interest.

The Xbox One's Kinect will allegedly talk back to gamers, just as Knight Rider prophesied and Siri later manifested. You said it, Kinect.
According to a couple of sources at Polygonwho reportedly tested the hardware, the Kinect will eventually implement two-way conversations, though it's unclear if this will be available at the console's launch. The report stated that in one scenario the Kinect would scan the faces of viewers and stop if it spotted someone it didn't recognize. The not-quite-sentient machine would then alert the console owner that there was a new person in the room and would ask this stranger to identify themselves before it would save their info for future reference. The Polygon report also noted that the Xbox One will feature remote play. According to the source, a player could ask their friend over Skype to take over for them to assist in a difficult part of a game. Once this occurs, either player can end the remote session with the press of a button. It's not clear if this second player would need to own the game, too, or how long a remote play session could last. It's also unclear if this will be powered by the Xbox One's cloud integration, as Sony is supporting a similar feature via Gaikai. When we asked about this, a Microsoft spokesperson issued us the following statement:"In the days since we announced Xbox One there has been a lot of random speculation about various features and potential future scenarios for Xbox One. We look forward to sharing more details at a later date, but aren't discussing anything further at this time."

Headset manufacturer Turtle Beach will make headsets for the Xbox One's proprietary data port, it has been confirmed.
The major headset brand, which boasts 50 per cent market share in the United States, announced today that it is working with Microsoft on the headsets. The announcement follows news yesterday that the Xbox One's new proprietary data port will render current headsets obsolete.
"In Turtle Beach we have a partner that can help Microsoft deliver world class gaming audio experiences to our customers," Microsoft Director of Strategic Alliances Branden Powell said.
No word on specific models has been provided.
Reports yesterday suggested that Xbox One's proprietary data port will gain Microsoft more control over the production of third party peripherals.

Xbox One will let users navigate and watch live TV from cable, telco or satellite set-top box fed through the console. However, TV integration features will be limited to the US at launch,Microsoft has confirmed. But a Sky spokesperson toldPocket-lint: "We enjoy a long track-record of innovating with Microsoft on the Xbox platform and will explore any future opportunities offered by Xbox One."
Speaking in a wide-ranging Xbox One interview published this week, Phil Harrison, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business (IEB), told CVG: "TV is a very local thing as you know. We are committed to working with our existing and potential new partners to make sure that wherever you live we will deliver a great TV experience.
"We believe that the TV connectivity of Xbox One is a really magical part of the system and we're committed to making that amazing wherever you live. We know that TV is ultra local and we already have teams in place to work on that vision."
Users will be able to find TV shows on Xbox One in three ways: by using voice and motion controls, through a personal favourites area, or via a trending section which shows what's popular with the Xbox community. "This is the beginning of truly intelligent TV," Yusuf Mehdi, senior vice president of Microsoft's IEB, claimed earlier this week.

May 26th, 2013, 22:19 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft has confirmed the existence of a Halo-related project titled 'Bootcamp', which surfaced recently via Korean Ratings.
The Microsoft-filed Koreanlisting, spotted by Game Front, names 'Bootcamp' as a PC online action game, with mention of Halo 3 in the description.Little else can be gleaned from the Google-translation, but a Microsoft rep was surprisingly willing to confirm the prematurely outed project with an albeit vague statement.
"What's Bootcamp? It is not related to our Xbox One efforts, or the Reclaimer Saga, but rather a project we're very enthusiastic about and will have more to say about in the near future," said the rep.
The 'Reclaimer Saga' refers to the second Halo trilogy, which is expected to continue on the next-gen Xbox One console.
A PC port of Halo 3 would seem unlikely at this point - a full six years after it originally hit Xbox 360 - unless it were some sort of experimental free-to-play multiplayer venture (think Quake Live). The project may also be related to a Halo novel by Reed Ruiz titled Halo: Fall of Reach: Boot Camp, but nothing is confirmed.
Perhaps we'll hear more on this at E3 next month.

EA Sports boss Andrew Wilson has confirmed that the Fight Night franchise has been indefinitely placed on hold.
"Right now, a great portion of the core of the Fight Night team are actually the team that are building UFC," Wilson told IGN.The last game in the Fight Night series was 2011's Fight Night Champion - the fifth main installment - released for Xbox 360 and PS3.
In early 2012 EA's signed a multi-year, multi-product deal with UFC, taking over video game duties from previous rights holder THQ. The agreement to transition the rights to EA involved in an undisclosed cash payment to THQ from UFC parent Zuffa.
But Wilson didn't rule out the possibility of Fight Night returning in future. "Do I see a future for Fight Night? You know, sure. But right now, UFC is where our fighting focus is," he said.
EA's upcoming sports titles will be powered by 'Ignite', a brand new engine that the publisher promises will "blur the line between real and virtual".
The firm recently released a pre-rendered trailer to mark the announcement of the next-generation tech, showcasing snapshots of FIFA, NFL, NBA and UFC.

Unnamed sources speaking with Polygon say the Xbox One has a remote play feature between consoles, both hardwired and online, allowing friends to take over gameplay remotely. The demonstration the sources claim to have witnessed featured one Xbox One connecting to another using "a local hardwired connection between consoles," with a Skype call bridging the two users. A similar feature is available on Sony's next-generation console, the PlayStation 4, both between consoles and via PlayStation Vita.
The other piece of the report adds to a bit we already knew concerning the new Kinect. "At some point, we'll be able to have conversational understanding," Microsoft hardware lead Todd Holmdahl told us last week. That "some point" may be sooner than later, as Microsoft reps were apparently already demonstrating the functionality, and said it'll be available either at launch or "post-launch within the first few months."

Xbox One maker calls dibs on technique to encourage viewership of shows and ads
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
Xbox One is intended to combine users' gaming and TV watching in a single device, but Microsoft's plan to merge the two goes beyond sticking them in the same plastic casing. Last November, the company applied for a patent on an Xbox 360-like achievements system for watching TV.
"Television viewing tends to be a passive experience for a viewer, without many opportunities for the viewer to engage or have interactive experiences with the presented content," the application states. "To increase interactive viewing and encourage a user to watch one or more particular items of video content, awards and achievements may be tied to those items of video content."
Two examples given include doling out achievements for watching a single event like the Super Bowl, or for watching an entire series of a single show.
"Additionally, by tying the awards and achievements to particular items of video or advertising content, viewers may be encouraged to increase their viewership of the content, thus increasing advertising opportunities," according to the application.
Microsoft also envisioned using the Kinect motion-sensing camera in tandem with this system. For example, achievements may be tied to viewers performing specific actions while they watch a show. The system can make sure the user is simply in the room while it plays, or it can tell the user to hold up a specific product. The camera would then scan the item held up and reward the user with an achievement.
The patent application details a variety of possible rewards, including points for a GamerScore-like tally that is viewable by other users, new clothes and props for an avatar, virtual money for a game, or even physical rewards.

Kinect 2 will be able to employ certain DRM measures depending on what it observes in the living room.
That’s the conclusion suggested by a patent filed by Microsoft, and corroborated by sources talking to MCV in the weeks leading up to this week’s Xbox One reveal.
ExtremeTech reports that Microsoft has filed for a patent that allows Kinect to monitor the number of viewers in the room. It then cross-checks this with the maximum number of viewers permitted by the licence that a user agrees to when purchasing or renting content.
If it is deemed that too many people are present, the user will be prompted to pay an additional fee to upgrade the licence.
Says the filing: “The users consuming the content on a display device are monitored so that if the number of user-views licensed is exceeded, remedial action may be taken.”
It should be noted too that Kinect is designed to continuously observe its roommates. It also adds that the T&Cs for any particular piece of content can be determined by the copyright holder.
It’s also hard to stop yourself pondering where such a tech ideology could lead. Could Kinect block 18-rated content if it detects minors in the room? What if the owner of the content licence leaves mid-viewing?
And how much of this information is being fed back to Microsoft? And even more importantly, its affiliates?
Are content owners paying to receive information about what part of a film viewers enjoyed the most? Or whether they continued to look at the TV screen when an advertisement was aired?
Big questions lie ahead.
When contacted by MCV Microsoft said it does not comment on rumour and speculation.
UPDATE: To address the question of the age of the patent. Yes, the patent is old. But we have been told by UK industry sources within the last month that this system will be implemented on Xbox One.
UPDATE 2: Microsoft has now issued MCV with the following comment: "Microsoft regularly applies for and receives patents as part of its business practice; not all patents applied for or received will be incorporated into a Microsoft product.

Expansion beyond the games market could lead to record-breaking sales of the Xbox One and games consoles in general, Microsoft has claimed.
But before it gets there, the company believes that the Xbox 360 still has as many as 25m additional unit sales left in it.
"We believe over the next five years we can break a 100m unit installed base," Microsoft’s senior VP of interactive entertainment business Yusuf Mehdi told OXM. “That's something we're shooting for, it's not a financial plan as such, it's just rough numbers if you will.
“To sell another 25m, half of those will probably come from replacements, but half will come from new buyers. And the way we'll break into those segments is by hitting new price points, getting new classes of entertainment to come with the Xbox, and breaking into new customer segments. So you'll see the Xbox 360 continue to exist, even as we launch the next generation Xbox One."
So how does Microsoft get from there to Xbox console hardware sales of 1bn units?
"Every generation, as you've probably heard, has grown approximately 30 per cent," Mehdi added. "So this generation is about 300m units. Most industry experts think the next generation will get upwards of about 400m units. That's if it's a game console, over the next decade.
"We think you can go broader than a game console, that's our aim, and you can go from 400m to potentially upwards of a billion units. That's how we're thinking of the Xbox opportunity as we go forward."

So tight is the secrecy surrounding Microsoft’s pre-owned ambitions for Xbox One that even GameStop has seemingly been sworn to silence.
"Definitely Xbox has said that they do support the trade-in/resale games at retail and that they want to handle communication from this point forward on that,” president Tony Bartel said in the retailer’s investor call, as reported byJoystiq.
However, that didn’t stop Bartel talking positively about Microsoft’s plans in the vaguest possible terms.
“I think what is important to note is that all three of the consoles that have launched have now come back and they say 'I realize the value of the buy-sell-trade model,' and they have built that into their new consoles moving forward,” he added.
“We anticipate that we are going to be able to leverage that, like we leverage it on the consoles today."
Bartel added that in the two days following the Xbox One’s reveal GameStop saw 250,000 people sign up to its ‘First to Know’ list for the machine.
For comparison, the retailer’s First to Know PS4 list attracted 600,000 members in its first three weeks.
MCV revealed earlier today that retailers face a significant cut in their share of future pre-owned sales.

Retailers will be free to charge whatever they wish for pre-owned Xbox One games, but both Microsoft and publishers will take a percentage cut of every sale.
Retail sources have told MCV that Microsoft has this week briefed key retail partners on how it intends to take ownership of the pre-owned market.
This is how we’ve been told it will all work:
A gamer walks into a retailer and hands over the game they wish to sell. This will only be possible at retailers who have agreed to Microsoft’s T&Cs and more importantly integrated Microsoft’s cloud-based Azure pre-owned system into its own.
The game is then registered as having been traded-in on Microsoft’s system. The consumer who handed it over will subsequently see the game wiped from their account – hence the until now ambiguous claim from Phil Harrison that the Xbox One would have to ‘check in’ to Microsoft’s servers every 24 hours.
The retailer can then sell the pre-owned game at whatever price they like, although as part of the system the publisher of the title in question will automatically receive a percentage cut of the sale. As will Microsoft. The retailer will pocket the rest.
Unconfirmed reports on ConsoleDeals.co.uk suggest that retail’s slice will be as little as ten per cent. That’s a significant cut from what it has become accustomed to from pre-owned sales and more in line with what they would receive from the sale of a new game – hence, the value of the pre-owned market to the retailer is effectively destroyed.
These same unconfirmed reports also suggest that the activation cost for consumers buying or borrowing pre-owned software will be £35.
When contacted by MCV Microsoft responded with the following statement: “We know there is some confusion around used games on Xbox One and wanted to provide a bit of clarification on exactly what we’ve confirmed.
"While there have been many potential scenarios discussed, we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail. Beyond that, we have not confirmed any specific scenarios. Another piece of clarification around playing games at a friend’s house – should you choose to play your game at your friend’s house, there is no fee to play that game while you are signed in to your profile.”
UPDATE: Many readers are asking whether the £35 will be additional cost on top of the price of buying the game. No, we believe that the £35 figure – which is not our number, incidentally – would cover the entire transaction. If correct this would leave retail with a cut per sale of around £3.50.
UPDATE 2: Microsoft's Major Nelson has at last offered a direct (although not direct to MCV, incidentally) reply to our story on his website. It reads:
“Over the past few days, we have been reading comments and message boards following the Xbox One announcement. There are a few questions regarding used games. I wanted to clarify and provide this official statement:
“The ability to trade in and resell games is important to gamers and to Xbox. Xbox One is designed to support the trade in and resale of games. Reports about our policies for trade in and resale are inaccurate and incomplete. We will disclose more information in the near future.”
Is this a dismissal of the rumours? That's up to interpretation. “The claims that Microsoft is changing the pre-owned games model at retail are false” or “users will not have to pay a fee to play pre-owned games on Xbox One” or “there will be no change to how retailers sell pre-owned Xbox games in the future” would have been a denial.
That the “reports are inaccurate and incomplete” is as frustratingly vague as every comment on the subject from Microsoft has been so far. The report could be “inaccurate” for an assortment of minor reasons, none of which affect its central claims.
And more to the point, if the claims are inaccurate then why not tell us when we shared them with you prior to publication?
Again we're left in the situation of craving nothing more than a concrete response to what is fundamentally a very simple question: Under what circumstances will users be charged for playing a game that has previously been registered on another user's account?
It sounds like we want the same thing, Major – some clarification. We eagerly await.
