Those sleuths over at US site Kotaku believes it has all the information about a major new Xbox exclusive.
Respawn Entertainment – the team set-up by the creators of Call of Duty – has built a futuristic online multiplayer-centric shooter that pits giant Titans against heavily armed foot soldiers.
But the highly anticipated new IP is not coming to PS4, PS3 or Wii U, the site claims. And in fact will be an Xbox 360 and next Xbox exclusive release. That's a big coup there for Microsoft, if it turns out to be accurate.
Apparently the new game will be always-online, which is bound to cause some concern from avid gamers who have witnessed recent failed always-online launches, including SimCity.
Respawn Entertainment was set up in 2010 by Vince Zampella and Jason West, the two men in charge of Activision-owned Call of Duty studio Infinity Ward. The two very publicly fell out with the publisher and subsequently jumped into bed with its main rivals, EA.
Activision has its own sci-fi online shooter in the works called Destiny, which has been created by Halo developers Bungie.
Respawn tweeted today: "Wow! Lots of speculation tonight. Great to see excitement about our project but you'll all have to wait for E3 for details."

New studio from Infinity Ward founders to shun Sony and Nintendo with first title
The debut game from Jason West and Vince Zampella-founded studio Respawn Entertainment will be exclusive to the next Xbox, sources claim.
Two unrelated sources “familiar with the game” told Kotaku that the developer, which raised some of its funding through the EA Partners program, would not be releasing the title on PS4 or Wii U, but there would be a version for the Xbox 360 developed by an external studio.
Respawn’s first title is said to be a futuristic multiplayer-focused shooter, in which players can take on the role of foot soldiers or mech-style armoured exoskeletons.
The report indicated that the game could be a timed exclusive, but “neither source indicated that was the case”.
Sources also claimed that Respawn’s game will be powered by a modified version of the Source engine. The title will also be ‘always-online’, but it is unclear whether users will be able to play the game offline.

What can we learn from that remarkable day in March 2001, when Sega killed off the Dreamcast? Sony chief executive Kaz HiraiIn an interview with The Guardian(published in 2008 but still illuminating in 2013), the former Sega of America chief Peter Moore gives insight into, among many matters, the difficulties in being beholden to a parent company."We [Sega of America] knew we could win," he said."We had a tremendous 18 months. The Dreamcast was on fire [in the US]. We really thought that we could do it. But then we had a target from Japan that said - and I can't remember the exact figures - but we had to make N hundreds of millions of dollars by the holiday season and shift N millions of units of hardware, otherwise we just couldn't sustain the business."Moore's appraisal is a common one: The competitive (even thriving) company is bound to the performance of its parent company. This is why the current financial position of both Microsoft and Sony is crucial in determining the approach for the Next Xbox and PlayStation 4.Last month I met with a well respected and connected industry executive who believed Microsoft will continue to throw large wads of cash at the Xbox division until it wins the war. While that may seem a tad exaggerated (I'm sure it'll be a different story if sales nosedive), there is one thing we can take for certain: There will be further Xbox exclusives from third parties (timed or otherwise) during next gen, simply because Microsoft can afford such luxuries and is certain that Sony cannot. There was a once famous (and unverified) rumour that Microsoft paid Take Two as much as $75 million to ensure GTA IV wasn't a PS3 exclusive, and to secure the game's DLC as a timed exclusive on 360.However ludicrous its price tag, the deal was an unequivocal success for Microsoft. Look at it this way: When San Andreas was released for Xbox, in March 2005, Sony announced the game had already sold over 12 million units on PS2. In the first two months of sales in the US, the game sold less than 500,000 copies for Xbox (it didn't chart the next month). Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer [Image: Venturebeat (cc)]Compare this to March 2009, when publisher Take-Two was asked how well GTA IV sold on the Xbox 360 compared to the PS3. Lainie Goldstein, the firm's chief financial officer, said the split was "about 50/50".This is a remarkable shift in sales momentum, regardless of however much Microsoft lost upfront because of it, and encouraged a remorseless mandate to secure more exclusive terms on major third-party franchises, from Call of Duty to Skyrim. Those who say you can't buy success clearly don't know much about the Xbox team in Redmond. Microsoft has a clear strategy to buy Sony's market as rapidly and brutally as possible. There will of course be accountability guidelines in place to ensure the Xbox team spend responsibly, but I'm sure the goal is to acquire PlayStation fans, however unprofitable that may be at first.Sony's approach could hardly be any more polarised. While Microsoft made $6 billion profit in its latest quarter (on top of another $6.4 billion in the quarter prior), Sony's four-year string of historic net losses had terrified its investors. In fact, the corporation's $6.4 billion loss for fiscal 2012 was marked down as the firm's worst ever year since it was founded in 1946. The tragic numbers were announced along with a plan to shed 10,000 jobs, axe entire divisions and appoint a new CEO (Kaz Hirai) to turn the oil tanker around. Many have cited Hirai's position at the top as a good omen for PlayStation. After all, he is a games man. Yet Hirai knows that, with Sony having lost a staggering $9.4 billion in the past four years, the absolute priority is to turn a profit. When Hirai outlined Sony's future in April 2012, he said the sprawling business will focus on three pillars going forwards: mobiles, digital imaging and games. Everything else - including the TV business - will be left behind. Both Steve Ballmer and Kaz Hirai are battling for the same market from opposite ends of the spectrum. The Microsoft chief can afford to take expensive risks like its (unpopular) Surface tablet, while the Sony boss must reign in the spending and report a string of profits each year. This is why indie devs are a key asset for Sony. The services of Jonathan Blow and Markus Persson aren't expensive in comparison to Rockstar, but they all have the potential to make millions for PlayStation. The plan, though still fairly discreet and nuanced, is showing signs of success. It's why we heard those Sony-fuelled claims that indie developers were focusing on the PS4 during GDC, and that the console is better for the self-publishing dev than any other company out there.Who will win next gen? Key to finding that out is asking yourself another question - what's more important these days; exclusive blockbusters or exclusive indies?

One-time authentication and internet requirement decision left to individual companies, not Microsoft
Publishers will be able to decide whether their games for the next Xbox require a constant internet connection or one-time authentication, according to a report.
Speaking to Polygon, multiple sources claimed there would be “some for of always-on requirement”, with constant internet connectivity designed to support a number of non-gaming entertainment applications that will be launched with the console, such as video streaming.
The always on feature could also possibly be used as an anti-piracy tool through digital rights management and version checks.
But rather than the console requiring an internet connection, the sources stated that it would be up to individual publishers to decide if their games required one-time authentication or a constant connection. It was stressed however that such guidelines for the next Xbox could yet be changed.
It has been suggested on numerous occasions in the past that the next Xbox will require internet connectivity to function, and could stop being fully functional after a matter of minutes without one. Microsoft has yet to respond the reports however.

Considering Microsoft's efforts to rebrand, redesign and rebuild its Windows platform, it's no surprise to hear the company is tweaking the visual aesthetics of its other brands, too. Speaking at Design Day 2013, Wolff Olins creative director Todd Simmons and Windows Phone design studio manager Albert Shum talked about the challenges of rebranding a company like Microsoft. "We're still trying to figure out how to put a consumer face on this brand, as an ecosystem," Simmons said, explaining how the team wanted to get away from the idea of Microsoft being a top-down, monolithic entity. The discussion touched on the creation of the Windows 8 logo, but also shed light on efforts to revamp other Microsoft brands. "Other brands are coming along too," Simmons explained, teasing the audience with a pair of sketches. "Bing, Skype,Yammer, Xbox -- everything is under development." With Microsoft's next generation gaming hardware lurking just around the corner, the time for a new logo might just be nigh. Read on to see the pair's full 45-minute presentation for yourself.

Now TV, the streaming video service operated by Sky, has come under fire for failing to send customers the free Microsoft Points they were promised.Earlier this year Now TV and Microsoft announced an eye-catching offer that promised those who signed up for a free 30-day trial through the Now TV Xbox site would get 800 Microsoft Points posted out to them in the form of a voucher by 1st class Royal Mail. Then, if they continued with the service after the trial and paid for a month of access - worth £8.90 - they would get another 1600 Microsoft Points. The deal amounted to a tidy 2400 MS Points in total. After the January offer expired Now TV launched a similar offer, valid from the 12th February to 1st March, that awarded 800 Microsoft Points for the first month and another 800 Microsoft Points for the second month. In both cases the points were supposed to be sent no later than 30 days after the end of the trial period, but now, three months after the initial offer, some customers still haven't received their Microsoft Points - and they're not happy."dusty31" signed up on 27th February and made his first payment on 28th March."Nearly two months later I have received no points, not even an email to explain why it is taking so long or to confirm that the points are being sent," he wrote on the Now TV forum."This whole thing smacks of you dragging your feet so people give up or hang in and stay subscribing for fear of losing their points because they think if they unsubscribe the points wont be mailed. I'm very disappointed with the way that this has been handled."It is as far as I'm concerned false advertising and I will not be renewing my subscription as of Sat the 27th as that is my 60 days. If I have not received my points within a fortnight of the 27th April I will be contacting trading standards.""dusty31" isn't the only one upset, and many have questioned Now TV's decision to mail out MS Points vouchers instead of simply crediting accounts over that there internet.People from Now TV have been active on the Now TV forum, but that hasn't dampened the complaints. In the latest update, dated 17th April, community manager Tom-R apologised for the delay. He advised those who made use of the January offer (the one for 800 + 1600 MS Points) and still haven't received their vouchers send an email via the Now TV contact page to get the problem resolved. For those that entered the second offer in February (for 800 + 800 MS Points), Now TV was as of 17th April still dispatching the vouchers. Michael asked those affected to wait until Wednesday 24th April for delivery. Now that's been and gone.Earlier in April Tom-R had claimed all Microsoft Points for the original January offer had been sent out and should have been received by 8th April. Obviously, this didn't happen. In a post dated 24th April, someone called Michael-O from the Now TV team wrote: "Due to the delay with the January points this has also had a knock on effect with the February offer. We will endeavour to get all the points out to those who are eligible for them."Sky told Eurogamer: "We are very sorry for the delay that some customers have had in receiving their Microsoft points. All customers who have contacted us have now had their points despatched. We would encourage customers who are still waiting for their points to get in touch with the online customer team at nowtv.com."

The next Xbox will introduce new social network elements, video capture functions and 'cross-game' Achievements, according to a new report. Polygon reports that Microsoft will more closely position Xbox Live to social networks such as Twitter and Facebook, by adding the ability to 'follow' other users and removing the current friends cap.According to its sources, the unnamed next-gen console will include the ability to capture video during gameplay and then share it online, similar to the PlayStation 4's share button.Currently the next Xbox will allow users to review captured gameplay and select highlights, Polygon reports. The function can be turned off or set to automatically record during certain in-game events such as FPS headshots or specific Achievements, it says. The report claims that more control will be handed to creators for how their Achievements work on the new console.Developers will be able to add new Achievements post-launch without DLC, it says, and tie the rewards to a broader set of events, such as weekend challenges and cross-title accomplishments, such as finishing the first chapter in two different games by the same company.Microsoft has confirmed it will reveal its next-gen plans at a special event on May 21.

Activision could be preparing to reveal its new Call of Duty game - possibly titled Call of Duty: Ghosts - next week. A photo of an alleged GameStop 'display blueprint' sent to IGN (pictured right) suggests that the retailer will be receiving new promotional materials related to this year's new Call of Duty game for display on May 1.If true, this is likely to tie in with a wider public reveal. This would mirror last year's reveal of Call of Duty: Blacks Ops 2, which was announced on May 1 during the NBA Playoffs. It also corroborates with previous reports, which have tipped a May 1 reveal along with new gameplay details such as interactive loading screens and the ability to peek around corners and slide along the ground while firing.Earlier this week, retail giant Tesco posted listings for Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the unannounced but previously rumoured Call of Duty: Ghosts, complete with box art that appeared to be genuine. Those listings have since been pulled.

The new Xbox is almost here and the details appear to strongly suggest 'always on' is the way forward. We all know that this is anartificial requirement and certainly there are plenty of people on all sides of the table. To paraphrase the user 'tuffy' who commented on this issue at Ars Technica recently; if you're trying to sell 'always online' as a feature of the future, there needs to be some benefit for me the customer. There is not one. Or, rather, there is no sign yet of any actual clearly compelling reason why any end user would support this limitation to their purchase. So, what's the best way to express this? Spend your money on an Ouya? Contact the Xbox team? These are all valid options but they also lack visibility. What we need is a way that could help actually quantify the levels of discontent in the gamer community. Maybe E3 attendees could turn their backs in protest like some did during Thatcher's funeral procession. Or gamers could sign some useless petition. What do Slashdotters think? Is the upcoming Steam box a reasonable plan? As a gamer, I'm of two minds about the whole thing. I really don't like it but I may roll over eventually and join the herd because I could get used to it. Then again part of me is rankled by this slow erosion of access to me and my data.

Tech writer reiterates pricing plans, says connectivity "isn't as Draconian as many seem to believe"
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
Microsoft is gearing up to reveal its new console next month, but some of the system's key details may already be out of the bag. Windows IT Pro senior technical analyst Paul Thurrott today reported a handful of details about the new system, including release window, price points, and a suggestion that the system's required Internet connectivity won't be as big a hassle as some have feared.
Thurrott detailed what he knows about the next Xbox, including a launch window (early November 13) along with price points. Repeating what he had said earlier this month, Thurrott described a two-tiered pricing plan, where customers could purchase the next Xbox for $500, or $300 with a two-year Xbox Live Gold subscription at a monthly price of $10.
The writer also talked about the system's functionality, saying it will be based on the core version of Windows 8, include a Blu-ray drive, and as rumored, will require an Internet connection. However, Thurrott said the particulars of how Microsoft will implement that mean the requirement "isn't as Draconian as many seem to believe."
Finally, Thurrott said Microsoft has backed off plans for a stripped-down, streaming entertainment-focused version of the hardware. Instead, it will release a new, less expensive iteration of the Xbox 360 this year.
Thurrott has proven accurate with his Microsoft reporting in the past, most recently with the news that the system reveal event will take place May 21.

We know, we know. ANOTHER next Xbox rumour story.
But there’s reason to put weight in this one. It comes fromtech blogger Paul Thurrott who earlier this month correctly named May 21st as the date for the new console’s reveal.
So he clearly knows something. Or is a good guesser.
Thurrott reckons the new machine is due out in early November, includes Blu-ray, is not backwards compatible, is based on the ‘Core’ version of Windows 8 and include apps based on Windows functionality.
The machine will launch with two SKUs priced at $499 and $299, the latter of which requires a two-year Xbox Live subscription priced at $10 per month.
He also reiterated that Microsoft has scrapped plans to launch a disc-less digital-based companion SKU. The project is now “on hold” and while it theoretically could be launched in 2014 it now appears to have been abandoned.
What is on the cards, however, is a redesigned Xbox 360 that will retail for “significantly” less than the current models.
Most importantly Thurrott once again claims that the console WILL require a permanent internet connection. However, the system “isn’t as draconian as many seem to believe”. So it’s still A BIT draconian? Kinect will also be mandatory.
Oh, and it will simply be called “Xbox”.
He adds that more details about the machine, specifically including its launch software lineup, will be unveiled “on the eve” of E3, presumably at Microsoft’s press event.

The first words spoken by shadow-hugging anti-hero Garrett in almost a decade are carefully chosen: “I’ve been away, but I couldn’t tell you where.” In that wry, noirish tone of old, they acknowledge his absence and also address the conundrum of bringing him back – the balancing act of continuity and reinvention at which Eidos Montreal proved itself more than adept with 2011’s Deus Ex: Human Revolution. In some ways, this is a fresh beginning. The ‘4’ is gone from the title – a blessing, since at last look it appeared in the middle of it – and the game is aimed at PC and the next gen, confirmed for PS4 and “other next-gen consoles” (read: the new Xbox). These decisions are linked: Thief is now a new game for new machines. But it’s also still unmistakably Thief, a firstperson stealth adventure set in a world built around shadows, light and stealthily cracking people unconscious with a sturdy blackjack.Certain building blocks have been identified as crucial to the Thief experience. Garrett is one of them. The 30-minute gameplay demo Eidos Montreal has readied for the press shows a scarred, angular hero strapped in buckled leather layers up to his high, peaked hood. The obvious concern is the jollification of this dark hero to appeal to broad console audiences, but if anything the new Garrett threatens to be too snarled, too icy. He delivers his signature line during a monologue – “What’s yours can be mine” – and it seems a shade more purposeful and directed than the appealing bow for hire of the original games. The team, though, see him as essentially unchanged. “The Garrett I know is back,” says producer Stephane Roy.Faithfully preserved alongside the man are his methods. Thief is still a game founded on – and enveloped warmly within – darkness. What’s currently an uncluttered UI still includes a light meter, now a small circle in the lower-left corner, which moves from jet to washed-out black as Garrett slides out of the shadows and into the light. While many of the changes to the old Thief formula are motivated by plausibility, the shadows remain as impenetrable as ever, even at close range. The corners of the decadent Victorian burlesque house Garrett slips through are cosy safe spots, and at one point he even uses the looming shadow thrown by a moving guard to steal through a doorway unseen. Probable? No, but it’s a conceit central to the rules that make up Thief’s world.

New submitter inkribbon writes that Microsoft blogger Paul Thurrott has now predicted that Microsoft's Xbox 720 console will actually hit the market this November. Thurrott offers a mix of what he considers cold, known facts and "clearly identified conjecture" about the upcoming device. Important to users is this confidently offered claim about the price: "Microsoft will initially offer two pricing models for the console: a standalone version for $499 and a $299 version that requires a two-year Xbox LIVE Gold commitment at an expected price of $10 per month.

When Microsoft announced that the next Xbox will be unveiled on 21 May, the internet was quickly flooded with speculation from eager fans. In the west, that is – in Japan, where Xbox fans are few and far between, the reaction has so far been mixed.Sales of Xbox 360 units regularly trail last in the sales charts in Japan, where the console has never achieved a foothold. Its last big push here, around the release of Kinect, failed despite exclusive games from high-profile Japanese game creators such as Suda51 (Diabolical Pitch) and Masuya Matsuura (Haunt) – simply because Japanese homes are typically too compact for Kinect to work properly.Since then, Xbox has lost exclusive Japanese series such as Ninja Gaiden and Idolmaster to Sony and Nintendo consoles, and the 360 version of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance wasn’t even released in Japan. There was no Xbox booth at 2012’s Tokyo Game Show, and many high-street retailers have cut back stocks of the console and its games.Japanese games players today vented their concerns over Twitter as the next gen reveal was announced. “I wonder whether the next generation Xbox will even come to the Japanese market at all,” mused Twitter user Verteth. “I feel a lack of motivation from Microsoft…”“Japan release, region lock, compatibility with 360 software, these are the three things I’m worried about,” posted RinaK10. “If it doesn’t come out in Japan I’ll cry.”A tweeter named RossoRR pointed out that a Japan release is likely because the news of the reveal appears on the Xbox dashboard in Japanese. “Woah! When I turned on my Xbox this was on the dashboard! Celebration! That confirms a Japan release.”

Paul Thurott, a veteran Microsoft analyst, has come out with a report stating that there will be two pricing models for the next Xbox. Most interestingly, he claims that there will be a model with a price set at $299 with a required two-year Xbox Live Gold subscription fee at $10 per month. The system without a subscription will cost $499, he claims. In his report, he also says that the system will launch “in early November 2013,” will have a Blu-ray drive, and will be required to be online in order to play.Lending credibility to Thurott is his prediction that the console announce date would be pushed back from April 24 to May 21, which has proved to be true.

Microsoft says it will showcase its "full line-up" of next-generation games at its E3 2013 press conference. The platform holder confirmed today that it will host its next-gen Xbox reveal event on May 21.The new hardware itself is likely to be the focus of the event, as Microsoft rep Larry 'Major Nelson' Hryb has confirmed that the company will follow up by revealing a "full line-up" of games at its pre-E3 press briefing."[On May 21] we'll share our vision for Xbox, and give you a real taste of the future. Then, 19-days later at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, we'll continue the conversation and showcase our full lineup of blockbuster games," said Hryb. While "19-days later" would seemingly point to June 9, Microsoft has confirmed to Polygon its press conference is set for June 10, 10am Pacific (6pm UK time), at the Galen Center in Los Angeles. Both EA and Ubisoft have also set their respective press briefings on that same day, although exact times are yet to be confirmed.Sony is yet to date its E3 press conference.
