The latest entertainment app to launch for the Xbox 360 comes from The CW (the relationship has now come full circle), bringing shows like Arrow, Supernatural andThe Vampire Diaries to the console. Special to this offering is that it will stream full episodes the day after they air on network TV, and will not require users to verify a cable or satellite subscription. Xbox Live Gold is required, so it's not an entirely free pass to stream away. Still, for fans of the shows it's another way to watch and this Friday'sVampire Diaries episode will feature some exclusive second screen content available viaSmartGlass. Not into The CW's teen-centric offerings? Beyond the just-launched Pizza Hut app, XBL Silver sports fans can enjoy a free weekend (25th - 28th) of access to ESPN, MLB.tv, UFC (the 7 pre-fight stories), NHL GameCenter and NBA Game Time. There's also the Hockey Night in Canada app, and an update for Hulu Plus that lets parents search for kids shows based on age group.

Curse of Brotherhood makers says Sony’s platform is not more attractive
Microsoft’s relationship with indie developers is stable, claims the creator of forthcoming XBLA title Max: The Curse of Brotherhood.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Press Play’s lead designer Mikkel Thorsted said he was having a hard time relating to the idea that PlayStation is becoming the more attractive platform for indies.
“I think people are wrong if they don't think Microsoft are looking into that, and trying to do what they can to adjust to how the market is changing,” he says.
“Of course they are, and it's actually also visible if you look at XBLA - there are free-to-play games, and there are more and more updates. It's a huge organisation, and they might be slow but they're definitely heading in the right direction.”
With its reveal of PS4 in February, Sony went to great pains to present itself as ‘the’ platform of choice for independent developers, with the likes of Braid creator Jonathan Blow on stage. This has resulted in some suggestion that Microsoft is falling out of favour with the independent development community.

Industry veterans look to improve student initiative in interactive media
Former Microsoft employees and University of Southern California (USC) alumni Kavin Bachus and Chanel Summers have donated funds to the USC School of Cinematic Arts Interactive Media & Games Division (IMGD) to create The Bachus-Summers Fund for Innovation in Interactive Entertainment. The fund will be awarded to students showing innovation and initiative in interactive media.
Bachus was one the original creators of the Xbox console, while working as the DirectX group product manager at Microsoft. He currently serves as Dave & Buster's senior vice president of entertainment & games strategy.
Summers helped designed the audio capabilities for the original Xbox and created one of the industry's first support teams for content creators. After leaving Microsoft, she founded Syndicate 17, an audio production studio based in Seattle and Los Angeles.
"There has never been a greater opportunity than there is today for talented and passionate individuals to come together and create the legendary game studios of tomorrow," said Bachus. "The Bachus-Summers Fund for Innovation in Interactive Entertainment is meant to do two things: to recognize and reward the most innovative work by a student in the Interactive Media & Games Division and to encourage that student to build their own future, for themselves and for others, after leaving school. It is our expectation that the recipients of this Fund will be provided with the tools to build lasting creative and commercial success."
"I've seen first-hand that the most meaningful work is always achieved when visionaries take risks and break boundaries," said Summers. "Creative and talented individuals must be allowed to realize their dreams, regardless of resources. When thinking about this Fund, it was critical to us that it be used directly to support the efforts of tomorrow's creative and entrepreneurial leaders."

Dead Space 3, Fable: The Journey, Resident Evil 6 – the industry isn’t short of big brands that have distanced themselves from their heritage in an attempt to reach a larger audience.
Next on the list could be Splinter Cell: Blacklist. Ubisoft Toronto boss Jade Raymond has said that while the series’ complexity has served it well in the past, the developers had to think a little different with the latest instalment.
"One of the things that held it back is despite all of the changes that have happened over the years, it's still one of the more complex and difficult games to play," Raymond told Eurogamer.
"Even though we do have core fans who are like, 'Oh, I want to have more of this experience', when you play any other game that has stealth elements, they're all a lot more forgiving than Splinter Cell.”
Blacklist, however, Ubisoft is trying to offer a "broader range of play" that caters for both the stealth-loving hardcore and the more action-orientated wider audience.
"We brought back the purest hardcore version, which is, you want to ghost through the level and get through it without killing a single person," Raymond added. “Every single thing you want to do you can do in a non-lethal way. That requires the most planning and being the most strategic.
"You can even play that in Perfectionist Mode, which means if you want you don't have any of the added things, such as Mark and Execute, that make it easier.”
The changes are liable to evoke some sort of negative reaction from forums but Raymond rightly points out that the loudest opinions are rarely the most widely held.
"There's a big difference between the vocal fans who write things on forums and what the larger base of players think," she added. "You can jump to assumptions only reading what people post on forums. That can be very different from what you find from user analysis afterwards.
"After shipping Conviction, there were a lot of people who said the fans didn't like Mark and Execute. But when we looked at our broader feedback – we do surveys through uPlay and get thousands and thousands of players – the people who rated those new features the highest were actually players who played at least two games in the series before.
“So in fact it was the opposite of what the data was telling us.”

Koch Media expects retailers to harvest plenty of sales from the upcoming console version of Farming Simulator 2013.
Heading to Xbox 360 and PS3 in September, the cult hit has sold more than 800,000 units globally since the PC SKU launched in November. It has been a regular in the UK PC Top 20 chart since release.
“The Farming Simulator brand continues to be a strong performer on PC, giving it a perfect platform to launch on Xbox 360 and PS3,” Koch Media’s head of sales and publishing Greg Whalley told MCV.
“The mass appeal lends itself well to console platforms and our aim is to secure broad distribution. Kids love to play farms and driving around in their favourite tractors, whilst the hardcore sim fan can delve deeper into the mechanics of running a farm.
“It is one of the most addictive simulation games on the market.”
Farming Simulator is one of many titles Koch is distributing in the UK on behalf of French publisher Focus Home Interactive.
Other upcoming PC titles include Pro Cycling Manager 2013, Magrunner and Mars: War Logs. Meanwhile, Tour de France 2013: 100th Edition will be released for Xbox 360 and PS3 in June.

In an announcement on the Monaco Facebook page, developer Pocketwatch announced that its co-op heist game will miss tomorrow’s launch day due to an unforeseen problem within the game.“We just discovered that there is an issue which requires that we push back our Xbox Live arcade game release date a little,” the update reads. “We’ve already submitted an update to Microsoft to fix the problem, and as soon as we know that the issue is fixed we’ll have a new release date.”The delay will not affect the Steam launch, which will continue, as scheduled, tomorrow.

April 22nd, 2013, 21:32 Posted By: wraggster
Watch out Call of Duty – EA believes FIFA 14 could be the best selling game of the year.
The upcoming soccer sequel was unveiled to the press at a special event in Guildford last week. It boasts a number of new features, which EA believes will fire the game to the top of the best sellers list.
“We have a very strong feature set so I am very confident that we can do better in terms of sales and numbers than FIFA 13,” said EA producer Sebastian Enrique.
“Both the physics and the new shooting visuals and animation are going to feel amazing. You will feel really rewarded when scoring or even when missing the target.”
Last year, Call of Duty was the biggest selling game of the year, but FIFA?fell just 70,000 units behind it.
“We have an ambition that is outside what is developed in the game. We want to create the best football game but we also don’t want to just be the best sports video game – we want to be the best video game period,” added Enrique.
“All these numbers about what is the No.1 franchise helps EA, so hopefully we can do it. It would be really rewarding for everyone working on the game.”
FIFA widened its sales gap over Pro Evolution Soccer last year. But Konami has made significant investment in its franchise, including developing a new engine and opening a new studio in London last year.
But the threat of renewed serious competition is welcomed by EA.
“I respect Konami a lot and they produce good games. A lot of people have played their games for ages. I think having competition is a good thing but we don’t consider competition to just be Pro Evolution Soccer. Call of Duty is also competition,” says Enrique.
“People that are playing Call of Duty are not playing FIFA. We want them to play FIFA and we achieve that by creating the best possible game that we can create. That’s what we focus on. We want to exceed everyone’s expectations and exceed our own expectations and create the best game. Competition or not, these goals are not going to change for us.”

Team Xecuter Presents: DemoN NandSwitcher 1.0 (Codename !DSWITCH)
Users who have a demon can now toggle their nands without getting up. This solution works after the console has glitched and the bootanimation has played.
For this reason this solution is more pleasant to use on a console that glitches super fast, for example the CR3 Pro (Slim) or our brand new hack for phats – R-JTAG (more on that later….)
Technical Details:
- XEX file is launched.
- UART command is issued to inform DemoN of the nand switching intentions.
- Console is issued a clean shutdown command.
- DemoN uses X8 to detect console is off.
- DemoN toggles nand, clears smc and boots console.
- Once the user is done playing on the console and shuts it down DemoN takes over again.
- DemoN again uses X8 to detect console is off.
- DemoN toggles nand, clears smc and leaves console off.
DemoN Requirements:
- For proper operation, X8 needs to be soldered to 3V3 non-standby.
- Kiosk pin (x7) needs to be soldered to the kiosk pin on the console.
- DemoN needs to be updated to the latest firmware v1.04
How to Use:
- Install Demon as normal with the additional requirements of X8 being installed.
- Transfer the XEX to the console.
- Setup the xex file as a quick launch entry in launch.ini. Example: BUT_X = hdd:\Apps\NandSwitcher.xex
- Boot console and hold the quick launch button you used.
Thanks to TB, BioHazard, cOz, NatelX and the rest of the DemoN dev team.
DemoN really is a fantastic device. If anyone is serious about having a high end nand switching system that includes a stack of low level development commands and features with continued support, at just $49.95 the DemoN is the only choice on the market.

Ye olde Xbox 360 continues to defy its years.
Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices Division – home of amongst other things its Xbox operations – saw revenues increase 56 per cent year-on-year for the three months ending March 31st, hitting $2.53bn.
The numbers were credited to higher Xbox 360 platform and Windows Phone revenue, with Xbox 360 in particular jumping 55 per cent to $641m.
However, for the nine months ending March 31st Xbox 360 revenue fell 13 per cent to $864m, mainly due to decreased console sales – 8.9m 360 consoles were shipped in the period, down from 11.9m the year before.
The company has also announced that Xbox Live now has 46m members worldwide. That’s an 18 per cent annual increase.
Microsoft’s overall revenue hit $20.49bn.
It was also confirmed that chief financial officer Peter Klein will depart the company at the end of the current financial year.

Microsoft has sold 77 million units of the Xbox 360
Microsoft says Xbox live subscriptions have reached 46 million - a climb of eighteen percent from last year.
The company gave its Q3 earnings report today, remaining silent on the topic of its new console despite a slight drop in sales for the Xbox 360.
The given figure of 1.3 million consoles sold over the past three months is down nine percent from last year.
All told, the Xbox has sold 77 million units.
It's impossible to say how many of these are still in use, but the figures for Xbox Live show that just under 60 percent of consoles sold are connected to the service.

The Xbox team is reportedly testing various smartwatch prototypes. According to the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft asked Asian suppliers to ship components for a potential watch-style device earlier this year.Additionally, The Verge claims that Microsoft's wrist-worn device has been in development for over a year. The site understands that the platform holder originally planned to release a heart rate monitor accessory for Xbox, but has since switched focus. Prototypes created by the teams behind Xbox accessories and the Kinect sensor reportedly feature removable bands attached to a 1.5-inch touch display, and one model is said to include the same magnetic power connector Microsoft uses on its Surface tablets. In February, the WSJ also reported that Apple is experimenting with wristwatch-like devices that would perform some functions of a smartphone.

With a new console on the horizon, Microsoft takes another shot at Japan
Microsoft is running a new Xbox Live promotion in Japan, according to a report from Siliconera. The promotion, Aim to Do It! One Million Hours, will give Xbox Live Silver and Gold users free Microsoft points for playing certain titles between April 20 and June 19. If the region spends 300,000 cumulative hours on Xbox Live, Gold members will receive 100 MSP, while Silver members will receive 10 MSP. At 500,000 hours, Gold nets 200 MSP and Silver gets 20 MSP. Finally, at 1,000,000 cumulative hours, Gold members will receive 400 MSP and Silver members will get 30 MSP.
The following titles count towards the campaign:
- Battlefield 3
- Forza Motorsport 4
- Forza Horizon
- Halo 4
- Dance Central 2
- Skyrim
- Gears of War Judgment
- Crysis 3
- Far Cry 3
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
- Bioshock Infinite
- Borderlands 2
- Tomb Raider
- Resident Evil: Revelations
- Resident Evil 6
- Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge
- Caladrius
- Dodonpachi: Saidaioujou
- Child of Eden
- Monster Hunter Frontier/Frontier G
Microsoft has never had a strong foothold in the region. In a recent interview withIGN, Comcept boss Keiji Inafune said that the Xbox may have been crippled from the beginning, due to the console not being a Japanese product.
"Probably one of the reasons is because PlayStation is a domestic brand in Japan," he said. "When you see two products with similar features and one is from your own country and the other is from foreign countries, it's easy to pick the one from your own country. From this perspective, Xbox is made by Microsoft in the US, so it's not a domestic product. It's only natural that you want to support your domestic products. If there were more Xbox-exclusive games out there, things may have been different, but usually a title is developed for multiple platforms so that's not the case."
This promotion is one way for Microsoft to improve its current standings in Japan, but at this point Sony's PlayStation 3 already has a commanding lead. At the very least, the promotion could change the sentiment from Microsoft's next Xbox.
"Microsoft's Japan promotion is quite unique, but without being able to drop price on its software or hardware, Microsoft has few options to correct their Japan performance. Microsoft could have simply increased its marketing and retail presence. Large media companies tend to throw money at their problems, so I admire Microsoft for at least speaking directly to gamers in Japan," EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich told VentureBeat.
"The promotion is likely to increase Xbox 360 engagement in Japan, which should trickle down into sales, but given PlayStation 3's five-times lead over the Xbox 360 in Japan, I doubt that this promotion will shift the tides anytime soon. But from Microsoft's point of view, it is certainly worth the effort."

Microsoft's system continues its impressive run of consecutive months of dominance over other consoles
Microsoft has just announced that the Xbox 360 sold 261,000 units in March in the US, marking the 27th consecutive month as the best-selling console in the US. The total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in March reached $402 million, (hardware, software and accessories), which was the most for any console in the US.
Microsoft noted that Xbox 360 held six of the top 10 console game titles in March with games like BioShock Infinite, NBA 2K13, Gears of War: Judgment, Tomb Raider and more.
Although it's not been officially announced, many are expecting Microsoft to finally announce its next-gen Xbox at a special event next month, prior to E3 in June.

It may not be remembered quite as well as Arrested Development, but it looks like Microsoft is aiming to bring back another big network TV show on a service that's decidedly outside the bounds of traditional TV. According to TV Line, that show isHeroes, which was cancelled by NBC in 2010 after a four-year run, and the video service is MSN (itself part of Microsoft's broader push into original programming for Xbox). While the talks for Heroes are still said to be preliminary, the revived show would apparently focus on new characters and stories, with some of the original cast only making cameos in the new series. Of course, this wouldn't be the first time thatHeroes found its way onto an Xbox 360: the show was one of the few series to be released on HD DVD, and briefly found its way into some bundles with Microsoft's HD DVD player add-on for the console.

The Warner Bros.-owned movie destination app Flixster has come to Xbox 360with a new Kinect-enabled application available to Xbox Live Gold subscribers. Flixster on Xbox allows users to buy and rent films, access "the latest" film review scores from the critic aggregator source Rotten Tomatoes and look up local showtimes in the most clunky way possible ... on your television!
As part of the Warner Family, Flixster on Xbox 360 also allows users access their existing UltraViolet movie collection. The app is available to download in select regions and only to those with a continued appreciation of DRM.
