Consumers will not have to be permanently connected to the internet to play games on Xbox One, Microsoft has confirmed.

Mattrick said: “No. It won’t be always-on.”
“It’s alright gamers, we’ve got you covered,” he said.
However, he did say to use certain services, such play online, view TV or operate some the console other entertainment options, consumer will still need to have an internet connect.

Computing giant says fee allows users to install game from disc and onto their account
Xbox One users will likely have to pay an extra fee to play pre-owned games, Microsoft has confirmed.
As reported by Wired, games can be installed from a disc and directly onto the console's hard drive, meaning users will not have to insert the disc again after.
A statement from Microsoft suggested that it may be a mandatory requirement to install each game from the disc.
“On the new Xbox, all game discs are installed to the HDD to play,” said a spokesperson.
Microsoft then confirmed that users of a pre-owned game will have to pay a fee to gain access to the title if it had already been installed on another console so they could use it on their own account.

Unique architecture means next-gen console is unable to play Xbox 360 games
The Xbox One will not include backwards-compatibilty with Xbox 360 games.
On the back of the new console reveal, Microsoft has confirmed that due to the unique architecture behind the new hardware, users will not be able to play their old games on the system.
It stated that the Xbox One has been designed for a new generation of games which would make use of new cloud features and that would take advantage of the new processors house in the console.
Microsoft added it would however continue to support the Xbox 360 in future with new games and apps.
"Xbox One hardware is not compatible with Xbox 360 games," read a statement from Microsoft.

We had the opportunity to chat with Albert Penello, senior director of product planning at Microsoft this afternoon, who was kind enough to clarify a few topics for us regarding the recently-unveiled Xbox One. One thing we were quick to ask about was the integrated storage. 500GB sounds like a lot today -- but so did the 20GB unit in the original Xbox 360. The HDD there was, at least, replaceable. Can you do the same with its successor? Sadly, no. Hard drives in the Xbox One are non-user-serviceable, but Penello confirmed that the USB 3.0 port is there for external storage, which can be used for everything the internal storage can be used for. That includes game installs and downloads. So, don't fret: adding storage will be just as easy as ever.

Microsoft filed a trademark for "Forzavista" on May 15.
As spotted by Siliconera, the trademark is for "a feature of interactive video game software which allows players to obtain statistical information of internal and external features of a vehicle and to virtually navigate and operate those vehicles."The most recent entry in the racing series, October 2012's Forza Horizon, was principally developed by Playground Games, rather than series creator Turn 10 Studios, whose last game was 2011's Forza Motorsport 4.
The timing of the trademark filing would appear to back up a report last month which suggested Microsoft's software launch line-up for the next generation Xbox will include a new Forza game boasting "super life-like" graphics.
Microsoft is set to reveal its next Xbox this Tuesday, May 21 at a special event at its Redmond campus.
The live stream of Microsoft's event will be viewable on CVG's ongoingXbox Event Live Blog.
CVG will also be in attendance at the event, while its UK and US teams will be on hand for in-depth, up-to-the-minute coverage.
The event video for the next Xbox, known commonly as the Xbox 720, begins at 10am Pacific time Tuesday (6pm in the UK).

Additionally, respected tech blogger Paul Thurrott claims Microsoft has scrapped plans to launch a subsidised version of the system. It was previously reported that the new Xbox will launch at two price points; $500 flat, or $300 with a commitment to two years of Xbox Live Gold for monthly payments of $10.Shown in a proof-of-concept video at CES in January, IllumiRoom uses Kinect and a projector to augment the area surrounding a television screen with projected visualisations.
According to Microsoft, IllumiRoom can "change the appearance of the room, induce apparent motion, extend the field of view, and enable entirely new game experiences".
The demo video, which you can view below, shows effects such as falling snow and explosions being projected into the living room. It was captured live and is not the result of any special effects added in post production, according to Microsoft.

After years of speculation Microsoft has finally gone on record to discuss its new home console.
The comments come as part of the latest Major Nelsonpodcast.
Microsoft’s interactive entertainment chief of staff Aaron Greenberg revealed that the company is planning a two-stage console reveal. The first part is tomorrow night’s event. A second, games-centric presentation will take place at E3.
"We have so much goodness that there's no way we could have packed it all into one event," Greenberg stated, as transcribed by CVG.
"The best way I can describe it is, we're really gong to tell one story across two events. So we're going to start on the 21st [of May] and really that's about revealing the next Xbox platform and our vision for the future of games, the future of entertainment. We definitely have a lot of surprises planned.
"People are going to get a great inside look at the making of the new platform and the team that brought it to life. To be honest it's really about the team, the people here. We've never done this before, so it's really exciting to be able to do that.
"It's a lot of laying the foundation, and then just a couple weeks later we go to E3, and E3 is all about the games. It's going to be tons of exclusives [and] world premiers.”
CVG also highlights Greenberg’s confirmation that “we have a lot to share between [tomorrow’s event] and this holiday”, taking this as confirmation of a Q4 2013 release. Which it was bound to be anyway, in reality.

May 20th, 2013, 23:32 Posted By: wraggster
Piers Harding-Rolls, the head of games at analyst firm IHS Screen Digest, has set out his demands of what Microsoft must do at the New Xbox reveal tomorrow night…
The competitive landscape for games consoles is more complex than ever. Against this background, Microsoft is poised to reveal its next generation console with the target of standing out not only from Sony and Nintendo, but also from Apple, Google and Samsung and the multitude of alternative devices, platforms and channels that are encroaching on the established home entertainment industry.
IHS identifies three core strategies Microsoft needs to reveal on 21st May:
1. Take Xbox Live To The Most Popular Smartphones and Tablets
Core to maintaining console-device relevance in the home entertainment device battleground is engaging the audience on personal devices that are either used around the home or out and about. This means making Xbox Live services and content available on Apple and Google OS devices, as well as Microsoft's own Windows Phone and tablet products. IHS is looking for Microsoft to reveal a comprehensive roadmap which takes the current companion app strategy and delivers consumer access to Xbox Live-based video, music and games content on the most popular smartphones and tablets.
Microsoft must aggressively support competing smartphone platforms with its new Xbox strategy because of the weakness of its own mobile efforts. In 2013, Apple's iPhone and Google's Android will together represent 91% of the installed base of smartphones worldwide. By contrast, Microsoft's Windows Phone platform will decline to just 3% of the smartphone base from its 20% share in 2005, the year the Xbox 360 launched.
2. Double Down On Games and Interactive Content
Since the launch of the Xbox 360 in 2005 as a pure gaming machine, Microsoft pioneered the evolutionary role of the console as a hub for home entertainment. Now in 2013, Xbox 360 is one of many devices that serve video, broadcast and music content to the home. While it becomes increasingly hard to differentiate in broader entertainment terms, Microsoft continues to be very strongly positioned across high-end games content and online games services. This games offering anchors the broader entertainment positioning of the Xbox platform and will provide a defensive perimeter against potential new market entrants such as Apple and Google in the TV gaming space. As such, IHS will be looking for a heavier accent on high-end and exclusive games experiences than we have seen from Microsoft over the last two years.
Microsoft saw its console installed base market share increase from 14 per cent for the Xbox to 31 per cent for the Xbox 360 pursuing a strategy centred on the gamer.

Xbox Live is to host a new interactive TV project called The Music Room as Microsoft looks to increase its presence in the broader entertainment space.Described as a “new interactive two-part series”, The Music Room will be hosted by Laura Jackson and the first show will feature former Libertines co-frontman Carl Barat as its special guest. Everything Everything, Don Broco and Swim Deep will be performing on the show.Xbox Live Gold members can watch the show from Wednesday May 29 at 20.30 BST and take part in “interactive polling” which will “determine the show’s finale in real-time.”The Music Room is the latest sign that Microsoft is committed to widening its entertainment offering; the platform holder recently said that it is ‘dedicating all TV resources to Xbox’ and also opened Xbox Entertainment Studios in LA to produce “visionary original interactive content”. Expect to find out more about Microsoft’s broader vision at tomorrow’s next Xbox reveal event.

Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Business Chief of Staff Aaron Greenbergrecently stopped by the Major Nelson podcast to discuss next week's Xbox reveal event and how Microsoft will show its "vision for the future of games."
"We're really going to tell one story across two events. So we're going to start on the 21st and really that's about revealing the next Xbox platform, really our vision for the future of games, the future of entertainment. We definitely have a lot of surprises planned." Greenberg then specifically called out Call of Duty: Ghosts, which will have its next-generation engine demoed during the Microsoft event.
"People are going to get a great inside look at really the making of the new platform and the team that's brought it to life," Greenberg added. "I mean, to be honest it's really about the team, the people here. That's why we're inviting people to campus, we're going to bring them behind the scenes a little bit. We've never done this before and so it's really exciting to be able to do that. But I think it's a lot of laying the foundation - probably the best way to describe it - and then just a couple of weeks later we go to E3."
Greenberg concluded that more will be shown at E3 and after, leading into this holiday season. "E3 is all about the games. At E3, I mean, if you're a gamer, it's going to be tons of exclusives, world premieres and obviously even beyond that we have a lot to share between then and this holiday."
The Xbox event takes place on May 21 at Microsoft's Redmond campus, located in Washington state. Be sure to have your browser locked to Joystiq starting at 1pm ET (6pm UK, 10am PT) for all of the scoops, commentary and neatly organized words you've come to expect.

A Batman: Arkham Origins pre-order image on Amazon offers Deathstroke as a playable character via DLC. Check it out in a rolling image header here.
Batman and Deathstroke went head-to-head in last week's teaser video, but there was no word on how the striker of mortality would be incorporated intoArkham Origins. This could be a Catwoman in Arkham City situation, where she got an entire spin-off campaign, or it might be something entirely new.
One aspect of Arkham Origins is confirmed today – Kevin Conroy will return as a voice actor.

May 20th, 2013, 15:35 Posted By: wraggster
The new Xbox console will launch in early November, veteran Microsoft analyst Paul Thurrot has reported - he who previously leaked the console's 21st May announcement date.
Microsoft's next Xbox birthing tent.
The same source claims that the console will be released at two price points - $499 and $299 - with the latter including a fixed two-year Xbox Live Gold subscription.
Like most subscription models, the $10 monthly charge will make this price option the more costly over time, although will obviously offer a cheaper initial outlay.
The console will come with a new, upgraded version of Kinect, dubbed Kinect 2.0. There's no escaping it this time - all machines are expected to ship with a Kinect sensor already in the box.
As for the machine's name, we've heard conflicting reports. The machine may well just be named Xbox, a move that would fit the brand's transition into a wider entertainment moniker.
Less likely are the long-running rumours surrounding the name Xbox Infinity, the only "proof" of which has ever been that if you turn the symbol for Infinity on its side, you get the 8 of Windows 8. It's a neat tie-in to Microsoft's current operating system but might age quite quickly - what version of Windows will be present by the end of the next Xbox's life-cycle is anyone's guess.
[h=2]The games[/h]So, what will you be able to play on your new Xbox? Already-announced cross-generational titles are sure-fire bets - Bungie's intriguing Destiny (although Sony has snagged some exclusive content) for example, as well as Ubisoft's Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag.
We already know some of next year's multi-platform releases, too - triple-A titles such as Thief and The Witcher 3. A third Mafia game is also said to be in-development.
Mega-publisher EA is reportedly a key supporter of the next Xbox, and we expect to see several titles from its upcoming line-up shown on stage. Battlefield 4 is a dead cert, perhaps accompanied by a first showing of this year's Need for Speed.
17 minutes of Battlefield 4, running at 60FPS.
Another good bet is Respawn's new game, likely named Titan, an online sci-fi shooter that pits soldiers against Titan mechs. It's rumoured that Titan will include some level of Xbox-exclusivity, although it's hard to believe the multiformat-focused EA will publish it just for Microsoft's machine. More likely is some form of timed-exclusivity, or an early/exclusive DLC programme similar to Sony's current Battlefield 3 deal.
Tomorrow may also bring the first look at Crytek's Kinect-exclusive action title Ryse, development of which was shifted to the next Xbox.
From Microsoft's own studios, a new Forza with "super life-like" graphics will reportedly launch alongside the console, made by series creator Turn 10.
Rare is known to be working on several projects for the next Xbox (Kinect Sports 3?), while a number of Lionhead job listings have revealed the developer to be staffing up for a new RPG franchise which contains MMO-esque features.
Finally, it's been a while since we've heard from Alan Wake developer Remedy, which washiring in March last year for a mysterious next-gen project. Have we seen the last of their moody protagonist? A new set of ARG-related scribblings last year suggested not.
[h=2]The capabilities[/h]One person will be excited, at least.
[h=2]Next Xbox tentative specs[/h]Digital Foundry dissected the next Xbox's specs in detail back in January, but here's a brief run-down.
A complete, top-to-bottom list of Durango features for your reading pleasure.
Central Processing Unit:
- x64 Architecture
- Eight CPU cores running at 1.6GHz
- Each CPU thread has its own 32 KB L1 instruction cache and 32 KB L1 data cache
- Each module of four CPU cores has a 2 MB L2 cache resulting in a total of 4 MB of L2 cache
- each core has one fully independent hardware thread with no shared execution resources
- each hardware thread can issue two instructions per clock
Graphics Core:
- custom D3D11.1 class 800-MHz graphics processor
- 12 shader cores providing a total of 768 threads
- Each thread can perform one scalar multiplication and addition operation (MADD) per clock cycle
- At peak performance, the GPU can effectively issue 1.2 trillion floating-point operations per second
- High-fidelity Natural User Interface (NUI) sensor is always present
Storage and Memory:
- 8GB of DDR3 RAM (68GB/s bandwidth)
- 32MB of fast embedded SRAM (ESRAM) (102GB/s)
- From the GPU's perspective the bandwidths of system memory and ESRAM are parallel providing combined peak bandwidth of 170GB/sec.
- Hard drive is always present
- 50GB 6x Blu-ray drive
Networking:
- Gigabit Ethernet
- WiFi and WiFi Direct
Hardware Accelerators:
- Move engines
- Image, video, and audio codecs
- Kinect multichannel echo cancellation (MEC) hardware
- Cryptography engines for encryption and decryption, and hashing
There's no doubting that the next Xbox will be a powerful machine, although technical specifications obtained earlier this year and published by Digital Foundry suggest it will lack in several areas, such as GPU and RAM, when compared to PlayStation 4.
"Essentially it's the exact same CPU at the same clock-speed and it has the same amount of RAM but a different type," Digital Foundry's blacksmith of the future Rich Leadbetter explained to us. "Generally PS4 has a considerable bandwidth advantage - it can transfer data around the system much more quickly.
"The GPU has the same architecture, defined by the amount of compute units it has - PS4 has 18, the next Xbox has 12, which translates to 1.8 teraflops of compute power vs. 1.2." How this all translates into gameplay, however, will be another matter.
Also notable in the console's technical read-outs are mentions of an HDMI input, used for connecting the console to your cable TV box. Microsoft is pushing the console's use as a multimedia device, able to record and store your TV programs and overlay its features and UI on top of your existing telly channels.
Back compatibility is unlikely due to the next Xbox's switch to x86 PC-style architecture. But some form of support for your Xbox 360 games is not impossible.
"Entirely different hardware configurations don't make backwards-compatibility easy," Leadbetter continued. "That said, you could say the same thing about the transition from Xbox to Xbox 360, where Microsoft made efforts to ensure that a significant catalogue of older Xbox titles designed with x86/Nvidia hardware in mind worked pretty well on the PowerPC/AMD combo in the Xbox 360.
Microsoft Points are on the way out, reports suggest, to be replaced with gift cards for real money amounts.
"Given enough time and resources, a similar form of backwards compatibility could perhaps be implemented on Durango, but the sheer time and effort required to provide flawless compatibility with a handful of titles, let alone a whole library makes this rather unlikely."
But Microsoft seems keen to keep the Xbox 360 alive for the time being, at least. A new budget-priced Xbox 360 model, code-named "Stingray" is rumoured to be due for release later this year. Priced just $99 (£65), this may be a cheap alternative for those looking to catch up on some of the best that the Xbox 360 still has to offer.
Much has been rumoured of the console's potentially "always online" nature - that you won't even be able to boot a single-player game without first connecting to the internet. But an internal Microsoft memo published online earlier this month seems to have cleared up much of the speculation. It's good news:
"Durango [the codename for the next Xbox] is designed to deliver the future of entertainment while engineered to be tolerant of today's Internet," the document explained. "There are a number of scenarios that our users expect to work without an Internet connection, and those should 'just work' regardless of their current connection status. Those include, but are not limited to: playing a Blu-ray disc, watching live TV, and yes playing a single-player game."
That said, the memo did not rule out online checks that might block second hand or pirated games - one of the main reasons Microsoft might have considered an always-online console. In fact, technical documentation dated from last year suggested that the next Xbox would require games to be run directly from the hard drive, with discs useless after an initial install.

Microsoft exec Aaron Greenberg has hinted that Microsoft will target a 'holiday' launch for its next-generation Xbox.
Speaking during the latest Major Nelson podcast, Greenberg promised lots of surprises spread over Microsoft's Xbox reveal event on May 21 and its pre-E3 show on June 10."And obviously even beyond that, we have a lot to share between then and this holiday," said Greenberg, with his specific note of 'this holiday' seemingly implying a launch window for the new console.
Prior reports have strongly tipped a late 2013 launch for the new Xbox, which is expected to go head-to-head with Sony's PlayStation 4, which already has a confirmed 'Holiday 2013' launch window.
Greenberg also promised an in-depth 'behind the scenes' look at its new console at the May 21 event, and 'tons of exclusive' games to be unveiled at the follow-up E3 event on June 10.
"We have so much goodness that there's no way we could have packed it all into one event," said Greenberg.
"The best way I can describe it is, we're really gong to tell one story across two events. So we're going to start on the 21st [of May] and really that's about revealing the next Xbox platform and our vision for the future of games, the future of entertainment. Greenberg went on, "It's a lot of laying the foundation, and then just a couple weeks later we go to E3, and E3 is all about the games. It's going to be tons of exclusives [and] world premiers.
"And obviously even beyond that we have a lot to share between then and this holiday."
The company has already confirmed plans to show the "next chapter of Xbox gaming experiences" at this year's Gamescom expo, which runs from August 21-25 in Cologne, Germany.
CVG has begun its countdown to the big Xbox reveal on May 21 with a live blog through here.

Look out, MadCatz -- Razer's ready to add an Xbox 360 arcade stick to its peripheral lineup. The $200 Atrox should please serious button mashers, thanks to Sanwa-sourced controls and completely customizable parts. A total of 10 buttons sit alongside the joystick, and you'll find storage compartments for an additional stick and the bundled 13-foot detachable USB cable under the lid. Fighting game enthusiasts can pre-order the Atrox beginning on May 21st from Razer's online store, with global availability set for June -- Japan's lucky shores will see it this month. There's no word on variations for other systems, but that may be the price to pay for the integrated Xbox Live headset jack. Catch a render of its internals and a press release after the break.

Hardware sales continue to go down, but Microsoft is maintaining its streak of outselling the other consoles in the US
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
Microsoft sent word that its Xbox 360 console has sold 130,000 units in April, a month in which hardware sales were down 42 percent, marking the 28th consecutive month as the best-selling console in the US.
The Xbox 360 held 42 percent share of the current-gen console market, and total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in April (hardware, software and accessories) reached $208 million, the most for any console in the US.
Of course, all eyes are on Microsoft right now as the company prepares to lift the curtain on its next-gen Xbox system. The event will take place on May 21 at 10 AM Pacific time on the Redmond campus. GamesIndustry International will bring you full coverage.

Microsoft has launched a new service, Xbox Wire, in a bid to “help you keep up with the latest Xbox news” and communicate its marketing messages direct to consumers.Companies are increasingly bypassing traditional media in favour of direct marketing, where their own community managers reach out to consumers directly. In the hypercritical games journalism space, providing unfiltered preview content of upcoming games is increasingly valuable to companies – so setting up your own PR-managed news blog makes perfect sense.“You will be able to follow our journey as we bring you the best in games and entertainment and along the way we’ll introduce you to the people, places and technology that bring it all to life.” writes Xbox Wire editor, Lisa Gurry, who also happens to be the Senior Director of Public Relations at Microsoft. The firm promises that company executives, including Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb, will appear on the site.Xbox Wire will be fully live from the 21st May, to coincide with Microsoft’s announcement of the next Xbox.

Deep Silver will publish an upcoming gesture-based racing game for Kinect called Freefall Racers. The first breadcrumb in this trail comes from an Australian rating that has surfaced, outing Deep Silver as publisher.
The developer is Smoking Gun Interactive, whose most recent work includes two Kinect experiences, Mars Rover Landing and Home Run Stars, so a new Kinect project would make sense. The Vancouver-based studio at least partly funded Freefall Racers with help from the Canadian government, as evidenced by the $461,243 contributed through the Canada Media Fund (PDF) last year.
Our first glimpse of the game is courtesy of environmental artist Anthony Leonati, who published six screens from Freefall Racers on his personal website. [Update: The images have been pulled from Leonati's website.] In addition to the screens, he also pegs Freefall Racers for Xbox Live Arcade, though his LinkedIn profile indicates he has since moved on from Smoking Gun to become a senior environment artist at EA.
We've followed up with Deep Silver and Smoking Gun Interactive for comment and will update this post accordingly.
