Robbie Bach says that Bill Gates' widely reported comment about Halo 3 launching against PlayStation 3 next spring was a philosophical one rather than a specific pledge.
Speaking in an interview with the IDG News Service this week, the head of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division said, "Halo is something we'll ship when it's ready".
Last May, Bill Gates said in an interview with Time magazine that the second wave of 360 titles would arrive in time to cause Sony problems. "It's perfect," he said. "The day Sony launches, and they walk right into Halo 3."
Bach argues that his boss was using Halo as an example. "Philosophically the point Bill was trying to make is that we’re not just going to ship and not have great stuff coming up," he told IDG.
Bach also commented further on the decision to offer the Xbox 360 hard disk as an optional extra, indicating that it may have been influenced by price sensitivity in parts of Europe.
Speaking ahead of X05, which takes place in Amsterdam today and tomorrow, Bach said of the decision not to include a hard disk as standard: "It's particularly important in Europe where parts of Europe are very price sensitive and the channels where games consoles are sold are predominantly mass merchants which again are very price sensitive... One size doesn't fit all."

Electronic Arts has announced that it will showcase five Xbox 360 launch titles at Microsoft's X05 event in Amsterdam today and tomorrow, and has named three more titles in development for the platform.
The five launch titles are Need For Speed: Most Wanted, FIFA 06: Road to FIFA World Cup, NBA Live 06, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06 and Madden NFL 06. All five will be available alongside the console in the US from November 22nd and in Europe from December 2nd.
EA also stated that The Godfather, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat and Burnout Revenge remain in development for the Xbox 360 as previously stated, although release dates have yet to be confirmed. GamesIndustry.biz understands that Burnout Revenge is a port of the PS2/Xbox title released last week with Xbox 360-exclusive content additions, and should be released in early 2006.
EA Executive Vice President and General Manager of International Publishing Gerhard Florin called X05 "a great moment for us". "The visual richness and engaging gameplay are just two of the many reasons that gamers all over the world have something to look forward to this autumn with the Xbox 360 launch."
X05 takes place in Amsterdam today and tomorrow (October 4th/5th) and is expected to see Microsoft cement its launch line-up of between 10 and 15 games for Xbox 360, with new software announcements also on the cards.

IGN is reporting on The State of the Xbox 360, detailing information on the next-gen console since this past E3. From the article: "Coming into the home stretch here, it's clear Microsoft has had its fair share of problems. The MTV event, though brilliantly conceived, was a hype-without-substance infomercial that impressed nobody, especially the most important people -- gamers. At the actual MTV event, I did an informal poll which revealed that three-fourths of the people attending were there only to see the Killers. E3 was underwhelming to put it mildly, and the summer months proved to be vacant of everything but rumors, leaks, and more rumors and leaks. The Tokyo Game show helped Microsoft's cause a little, and Microsoft finally revealed its Japanese pricing and the worldwide release dates, leaving one major news announcement left open - the day-and-date launch games. Apparently, Microsoft and friends are still working on these last details."

I had this thread up earlier today and it mysteriously vanished. I just wanted to know if there is an effort to port cassini to xbox in order to allow use of saturn isos on it? I know its open source so I'm sure it can be done with the right programmers. Does anyone know more on this subject?

FreakDave released some new info about an upcoming Surreal64 XXX build
- a N64 emulator for Xbox (combining 1964, Project64 and UltraHLE) based on the original Surreal64 by oDD and Lantus.
We're sorry for the lack of updates, but life is keeping us busy. For all of you who are curious, here's the status of our latest build. Please note that this is still a WIP and some things may change until release.
Surreal64 XXX - Beta4.9 WIP Changelog:
* Changed: Launchdata is not needed anymore
* Changed: Video plugins are now chosen after the emulator has been selected
* Changed: Pagesize is now 256k
* Changed: Rom is now entirely loaded into ram (only for 128Mb users)
* Changed: Removed Enable/Disable Controller option from submenu (Change it in the launcher)
* Changed: Shortcut for changing Paks : Hold both triggers and press left thumbstick
* Fixed: Rewrote CD/DVD detection code (tested and working)
* Fixed: Rom size was shown incorrectly
* Fixed: Bug in Basic Audio plugin
* Added: New and optimized VMM code (slight speed increase)
* Added: Skin selection menu
Some of you might wonder when we are going to release our newest beta.
To be honest: we don't know. At the moment we're trying to fix some memory bugs and implement screen resizing.
Oh, and we've managed to increase compatibility with some roms which didn't run before due to the stupid audio bug (Turok series, Shadowman, etc..).

Surrey-based publishing giant Electronic Arts has signed an agreement with Namco to bring hotly anticipated Xbox 360 title Ridge Racer 6 to PAL territories.
The latest instalment in the RR series will feature more than 130 cars and 30 circuits, and a new World Explore mode designed to suit different driving styles. It will also be the first Ridge Racer game that allows players to race online via Xbox Live.
This isn't the first time EA and Namco have teamed up to publish a title in Europe, with deals involving cult hit We Love Katamari and PSP shooter Dead to Rights already signed and sealed.
There's no word on a release date for Ridge Racer 6, but series fans are hopeful that the game could be in the shops in time for the Xbox 360's European launch on December 2.

Tim Chen, chief executive of Microsoft China, revealed in an interview with Reuters that Microsoft plans to start selling the Xbox 360 in China next year (along with other [sic] eight territories) but stressed that the timing of its launch was not set in stone.”
It’s nice to know that the mainland will be joining at least Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, Mexico, and Colombia in welcoming the 360 with open arms (and large wallets, though nothing’s “set in stone”) next year.

Microsoft executive Robbie Bach has predicted that half of those who buy an Xbox 360 will sign up for Xbox Live, despite the lack of interest in the online service amongst current Xbox owners.
Speaking to Famitsu magazine, Bach admitted that the number of current-generation console owners who have subscribed to Live stands at just 2 million - around 10 per cent of the installed user base.
But he's confident that offering the free "Silver" version of Xbox Live to 360 will ensure that around 50 per cent of purchasers will take their console online. That doesn't mean they'll be playing online, though - consumers will have to pay for a "Gold" subscription for that privilege.
When asked about the potential for massively-multiplayer online gaming on 360, Bach said that it would have been unrealistic to try and get an MMO up and running immediately after a console launch. However, he did promise that a "new MMO" will be available on Xbox 360 within the next three years.
In the meantime, role-playing fans may be pleased to hear that a massive beta test is planned for the Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XI. According to Bach, it's on such a grand scale that anyone who owns an Xbox 360 will have the option to take part - providing they purchased the console that comes with a hard drive rather than the "Core" system, since a drive is required to run FFXI.
Bach went on to say he was pleased with the software line-ups for the 360, adding that the European launch list will be announced in the "very near future." He said that the company has a "clear vision" regarding which path to take in the crucial 18 months following the console's launch, and confirmed that there are many third-party titles in development which have yet to be revealed.

September 30th, 2005, 01:12 Posted By: wraggster
In their latest gaming industry overview for investors, Piper Jaffray analysts Anthony Gikas and Stephanie Wissink are projecting continued growth for the industry, a new hard-drive equipped PSP next year, Microsoft's Xbox 360 jumping out to an early lead in the console wars, and a less-than-revolutionary showing for the Revolution.
Starting with the home hardware, Gikas and Wissink released their sales projections for each system over the next three years. Through 2008, Gikas and Wissink expect Microsoft to sell 19.6 million Xbox 360 units, with the PlayStation 3 and Revolution trailing at 15.5 million and 5 million units, respectively. The estimates for both Sony's and Nintendo's consoles are based on late 2006 releases for the systems. But while the PS3 is expected to accelerate quickly and lead all systems with 8.5 million units sold in 2008, the ambitious Revolution is listed as starting slow (500,000 units sold in 2006), and lagging behind its competition with 2 million and 3 million systems moved in 2007 and 2008, respectively.
Gikas and Wissink forecast a modest net increase in console sales, partly due to market cannibalization as the handheld sector catches fire. The analysts are projecting a 45-percent increase in handheld hardware sales for the next cycle (which runs through 2011). The combined Game Boy line (including the DS) is projected to have a banner 2005 with a whopping 7.5 million units sold compared to the PSP's projected 3.8 million, but the next three years will see Sony and Nintendo running neck and neck in the handheld business. Gikas and Wissink have the PSP and Game Boy lines both posting annual sales for 2006, 2007, and 2008 of 5.5 million, 5 million, and 6 million. One of the most interesting aspects of the pair's handheld projections is that the report mentions they're expecting Sony "to launch the next generation of its PSP (including an audio/video hard-drive) in mid-2006."
Software sales are likewise expected to jump significantly, with a projected 43-percent increase by 2008. In addition, Gikas and Wissink are expecting that new revenue streams like in-game advertising and online downloads will grow 500 percent, from under a quarter-billion in 2005 to $1.36 billion in 2008. They cautioned against short-term investing in publishers because of market volatility over the next 12 months, but reiterated their Outperform rating on major publishers like Electronic Arts, Activision, THQ, and Take-Two Interactive.

Intel and Microsoft have announced their support for the HD-DVD format, citing its "unique advantages" over Blu-Ray such as affordability and an earlier estimated launch date.
"After looking at the core advantages to the PC ecosystem and how it would benefit the consumer, it is clear that HD-DVD offers the highest quality, and is the most affordable and highly flexible solution available," said Microsoft's Blair Westlake.
Intel technology officer Brendan Traw added: "Intel has determined that HD DVD best meets the needs of consumers and the requirements for the respective consumer electronics, computer and entertainment industries for delivering a high-definition, interactive experience to the home."
Up until now, both Intel and Microsoft have officially remained neutral in the HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray battle, declining to take part in the negotiations between Sony and Toshiba over a possible unified format. The fact that they have finally picked a side suggests that any remaining glimmer of hope has now disappeared.
It's no great surprise that Microsoft has joined the HD-DVD camp - just last month, the Redwood giant was rumoured to be considering incorporating HD-DVD technology into future versions of the Xbox 360.
Other companies who have already announced their support for the format include NEC, Sanyo and Hitachi, along with movie studios Universal, Warner Bros. and Paramount. Blu-Ray backers include Apple, Philips, Hewlett-Packard, Twentieth Century Fox and Buena Vista Home Entertainment.
Toshiba's supporters argue that HD-DVD discs are less expensive and easier to produce - making them cheaper for the consumer. HD-DVD discs can also hold high definition data on one side and standard definition on the other for backwards compatibility.
But single layer Blu-Ray discs can hold up to 30Gb, while dual layer discs can hold 50Gb - compared to just 15Gb and 25Gb respectively for HD-DVD discs. Blu-Ray also has an advantage in that Sony's PlayStation 3 will use Blu-Ray technology, making for a sizeable installed user base when the console launches.
Sony's backers responded nonchalantly to the announcement from Microsoft and Intel, with Hewlett-Packard executive and Blu-Ray spokesman Josh Peterson commenting: "We don't see this announcement as anything that will shift the momentum that Blu-Ray disc has experienced."

The big secret that everyone's been curious about, the Xbox Origen puzzle, has been revealed. From the article: "The Origen Xbox 360 site has counted down, and it appears to be promoting a contest for European gamers to win a trip to an Xbox 360 launch party in the U.S. As for the updated site, it went live at approximately 7:00 AM ET. The tree is now covered with flags from all over Europe instead of fruit, as well as a link to xbox360.com in the lower left-hand corner. A Harry Potter movie-soundtrack-like toy piano is also playing a loop of a short musical progression in the background. Rolling over clickable objects on the tree produces a disappearing fairy-dust-like effect which follows the cursor."

News from Lik Sang
Dashing up walls, silently striking and decapitating those who stand in your way, Ninja Gaiden was one of the best action adventures of this generation, recognized by many as the perfect Ninja Gaiden title. This week though, Tecmo proves the game wasn't perfect after all. In Ninja Gaiden Black, the entire original game is here, exploring the back story of Dead or Alive's Ryu Hayabusa, who is seeking revenge after his clan is massacred by the Vigor Empire. On top of that however, are the new scenes, weapons, enemies and costumes from the two downloadable Hurricane Packs. Then moving into unseen territory, there’s new cinematics, extra side missions and fresh areas to traverse. Still not done, after you wrap the main adventure up, which is far from a simple task, there's around 50 extra combat missions awaiting you, and beyond that even, the entire original arcade version of Ninja Gaiden can be unlocked!
Showing it all the love and care it deserves too, Tecmo went through the whole game polishing up any graphics that didn't meet their standards of perfection. Further changes include many challenges with a beefed up difficulty level, but for those who the game mocks as "Ninja Dogs", after dying a few times you're given the offer to play at a much more forgiving level. If you're after the ultimate honor however, give Master Ninja mode a go. Only one lone staff member from the developers, Team Ninja, was able to complete this, and anyone else who can, can rest easy in the knowledge they are truly one of very few elite gaming ninja's in this world. Being released this week, if you didn't give it a go the first time around, find out just what you missed out on now, and if you did, take your skills, and adventures, to whole new levels.
