Xbox 360 owners in Europe will pay 59.99 Euro (GBP 39.99) per year for a Gold Xbox Live membership, Microsoft has announced, and the company has also done away with the need to input credit card details to access the service - a move that's likely to meet with a positive response.
UK subscriptions to the actual online gaming part of Xbox 360's online service, Xbox Live Gold, will be available to buy from retailers for cash. As well as online multiplayer gaming, matchmaking and feedback tools, the Gold sub opens up "exclusive privileges and rewards on Xbox Live Marketplace" - possibly an allusion to Marketplace points, the anticipated currency for premium content.
Concerns about the safety of credit-card-free online subscriptions are likely to be nullified by the presence of parental controls, which can be used to prevent youngsters from engaging in certain activities both online and off. In other words if parents choose not to allow it, their children won't be able to go online - even if they buy the Live pack behind their backs.
Those happy to pay by credit card will be able to do as they used to do and subscribe via the Xbox 360 dashboard for periods of one month (6.99 Euro, GBP 4.99), three months (19.99 Euro, GBP 14.99) or 12 months (59.99 Euro, GBP 39.99). Anybody with an existing Xbox Live subscription from the first-generation Xbox will be able to migrate it to the new system as a Gold membership when they first start it up for no extra cost.
As promised, no payment will be necessary to access Xbox Live Silver, whether you own the high-end or low-end Xbox 360 hardware package - players will just need a broadband connection and a memory unit or hard disk. With Silver, it's possible to create a gamertag and personalised profile, send and receive voice and text messages using the Xbox Live headset - sold separately - download trailers, demos, new levels and other extra game content from Xbox Live Marketplace, and purchase games through the retro/indie-oriented Xbox Live Arcade area.
Overall, the European pricing structure for Live on the Xbox 360 is largely as expected - more expensive than comparable services in North America, confirmed last week, but on a similar scale. That said, Microsoft hasn't announced any premium packs as it did in the USA - those packs included all the Gold features as well as a headset and a free Xbox Live Arcade game - and says that at present, no such packs are planned.
Xbox 360 will launch worldwide in late 2005 - with most observers pointing to a late November launch, likely to be confirmed in the next few weeks. It will be available in two packages. The lower-priced, GBP 209.99 version, will offer access to Xbox Live Silver, but players will have to purchase an Xbox Live headset separately to engage in voice chat. The GBP 279.99 version will include a hard disk, headset, and a month's free access to Xbox Live Gold.

The day many of you have been waiting for has finally come; XBMC's built-in DVD-player core is now officially open to the public for general usage. The new dvdplayer-core, which a few of our developers have been working on for almost a year has been enabled in our CVS and is of today the default player for DVD-Video playback in XBMC. Please be patient with it, understand that it can be a bit buggy, it has some limitations, and still needs a lot of work. The basics functions for DVD-Video playback (DVD-menus support) is in there and from now on we will accept (properly formatted) bug-reports from end-users and we will do our best to help users of the player. We would also like to take this moment to ask and encourage programmers who may or may not yet have contributed to the XBMC project to step up and assist in the development of this new core for DVD-Video playback. Please take a look at the source code, its potential, and then look at the many (big and small) features that are missing or lacking, there are things that almost anyone can help with.
A special thanks goes to all people and groups who made a donatation!

You may or may not have been able to buy a clearanced copy of Astro Boy for the GBA earlier today, but we do know that Treasure, the developer of that 2D masterpiece (and we’re not talking about the mechanized monstrosity that was the PS2 version), will be sticking to its 2D guns in the next generation (if only for the Xbox 360).
Here’s what a rep for the company that made Ikaruga and Gunstar Heroes had to say about the matter: “There is no major difference in terms of gameplay for the games that we develop regardless of whether it is for console or handheld because they are all based on 2D action.” Then, ”...we take pride in developing our games with an elite and dedicated staff, which is small, so it will take longer to develop an Xbox 360 title.”
Whoa, an Xbox 360 title? So we take it then that 2D action, or at least the style of it (with 3D-realized characters and backgrounds), will be coming to the next generation of consoles, one way or another. Whether the idealistic young Astro Boy can make console manufacturers pay for discriminating against 2D titles in the past is a question for another time, however.

The popularity of Microsoft's Xbox 360 is on the rise in Japan, but it's still far from competing with Sony's PlayStation 3, according to marketing research company Infoplant. The latest survey conducted by the market research firm has found that the number of gamers interested in the Xbox 360 nearly tripled over the past two months, with 5.8 percent saying they have interest in the next-generation console. In a similar survey conducted in early July, only 2 percent of respondents said they were looking forward to the Xbox 360.
The PlayStation 3 continued to be the top pick among Japanese gamers, with 72.3 percent saying they are considering purchasing the console. Nintendo's Revolution came in at second place at 21.9 percent, well up from the 8 percent in the previous survey.
Although multiple choices were allowed in the survey, 21.5 percent of the gamers said they have no interest in any of the three consoles. That also means nearly all of the Japanese gamers with interest toward the next-generation gaming consoles had marked the PS3 as one of their picks.
While the rise of interest in the Xbox 360 among Japanese gamers may just be a part of the overall growing awareness toward next-generation consoles, another factor may be Microsoft's recent campaign to attract gamer interest in the country. The company has been repeatedly stating that it is taking the Japanese market seriously, and it held a press conference in late July to reveal a long list of Japanese game makers that have signed up as third-party publishers. A number of Japanese-developed games were also announced at the event, including Ridge Racer 6, which is scheduled to be playable at this week's Tokyo Game Show. The previous survey by Infoplant was conducted prior to Microsoft's announcements.
The new console will need as much support from Microsoft as it can get, as the current Xbox console is considered bulky and lacking in Japanese-oriented games. While the Xbox 360 will be the first next-gen console on store shelves, there's still the question of how many units retail stores will be willing to order, considering the lack of current Xbox sales and apathy toward the 360.
Infoplant's research was conducted with a sample of 1,000 console owners that were equally split into four age groups: 250 gamers in their teens, 250 in their 20s, 250 in their 30s, and 250 in their 40s. Each group was equally divided between males and females.

Hi, I'm new here!
I'm totally new to this, so please be understanding if this sounds dumb
I wanna buy an Xbox 360 as soon as it's out in November (never had a gaming console since PSX), and I understand it will need mod chips just like old Xbox does. When I go and choose what chip to buy, what should I take into consideration? What are the things that one chip can do (or can do better) while another chip can't do (or can do worse)?
I'm sorry for being a n00b, but I can't seem to understand why aren't all chips equally useful.
I will appreciate help very much! Even a link that explains this would be enough, because I can't seem to find one.
Thanks,
Fishos

Microsoft announced today that Celestica, Flextronics, and Wistron will produce the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system. Microsoft's highly anticipated next-generation platform remains on track for a global launch this holiday season in North America, Europe, and Japan.
"It's an honor to have the expertise and support of three of the world's best-in-class manufacturing companies as we move into the next generation with Xbox 360," says Todd Holmdahl, Corporate Vice President of the Xbox Product Group. "With three contract manufacturers on board, we're poised to have the flexibility and efficiencies we need to keep up with the consumer demand for the world's most powerful next-generation platform."
Flextronics and Wistron are existing partners from the original Xbox video game console, while the relationship between Celestica and Microsoft is newly formed. All three plants are located in the Pearl River Delta region in southern China.

SEGA of America, Inc. and SEGA, Europe Ltd. today announced CHROMEHOUNDS for the Xbox 360TM video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. This squad-based action title puts gamers in control of giant mechanized military weapons of war. With a strong focus on cooperative and competitive online gameplay, the game is sure to satisfy players looking for a deep, involving Xbox Live experience.
Developed by Tokyo-based FROM software - the creative team responsible for the popular Armored Core and Otogi series - CHROMEHOUNDS offers an intense, photo realistic look at war from the cockpits of colossal metal vehicles. These heavily-armed weapons of war, called HOUNDS, dominate ground battles during warfare in the near-future. Squads of HOUNDs take to the field in international factions; cooperating with and complementing each other in terms of firepower, range of movement, and abilities. Domination of the world is the prize for the mightiest army on the field. Strategic planning, snap reflexes and communication are key to winning the day in this battle-hardened action title. Players will take the role of either a Squad Member or a Tactics Commander, who is responsible for strategically guiding the team to victory with verbal commands on Xbox Live.
"From Software are world leaders in delivering truly epic games with superb graphics and I think that CHROMEHOUNDS could well be their finest game to date", commented Matt Woodley, Creative Director, SEGA Europe and SEGA of America. "The scale of the world and the action within is breathtaking - I recommend playing it with the volume turned to 11 and the phone off the hook".
Set for release in the Spring 2006, CHROMEHOUNDS represents SEGA's dedication to publishing compelling Japanese-developed content for next-generation platforms.
Key Features
- Photo realistic visuals bring the game's gritty, war-torn environments to life.
- Strategic gameplay puts the player in the role of 'tactics commander'; manage your squad while testing your reflexes on the battlefield.
- Xbox LIVE support offers cooperative and competitive campaigns for up to 12 players at once.
- Full customisation options present users with thousands of different ways to equip and personalize their mechs

The 360 will have security built directly into the hardware, said Xbox engineer Chris Satchell.
“We’ve taken security to the hardware level and built it in from the ground up,” said Chris Satchell from the Xbox Advanced Technology Group.
“One of the reasons we went with custom hardware design for all our silicon is that it allows us to build security at the silicon level,” he told the BBC News website.
“There are going to be levels of security in this box that the hacker community has never seen before.”
Part of the motivation behind this is to prevent people from using the 360 to watch pirated films or TV shows.

Microsoft plans to make its next generation games console, the Xbox 360, as difficult as possible to hack.
The 360 will have security built directly into the hardware, said Xbox engineer Chris Satchell.
Shortly after the first Xbox came out, computer scientists, smart amateur engineers and others started taking it apart and creating modification chips and software for the machine to make it do things Microsoft never intended it to.
With the 360, Microsoft is aiming to make it as hard as possible to hack.
"We've taken security to the hardware level and built it in from the ground up," said Chris Satchell from the Xbox Advanced Technology Group.
"One of the reasons we went with custom hardware design for all our silicon is that it allows us to build security at the silicon level," he told the BBC News website.
"There are going to be levels of security in this box that the hacker community has never seen before."
Part of the motivation behind this is to prevent people from using the 360 to watch pirated films or TV shows.
But Mr Satchell admitted no system was fool-proof and that, with enough time and dedication, the security on the Xbox 360 would be broken.
"There're some really bright people in the world with some really expensive hardware," he said.
"I'm sure sooner or later someone will work out how to circumvent security. But the way we have done the design doesn't mean that it will work on somebody else's machine."

Details of the various pricing plans for the Xbox Live service on Xbox 360 have been officially revealed, confirming earlier reports which hinted at a variety of subscription packs with different price points and benefits.
The basic pricing for Xbox Live Gold - as the subscription service is known, distinguishing it from the free Xbox Live Silver service - is $7.99 per month, with a three month subscription priced at $19.99 and twelve months at $49.99.
These subscriptions can be purchased directly through the Xbox Live Dashboard using a credit card, or acquired from retail outlets, and will give users access to play online games and use the matchmaking functions of the Xbox Live service, as well as doing all the things that Silver users can such as voice and text messaging, downloading demos and trailers and accessing the Xbox Live Marketplace.
However, two other more expensive packages will also be launched, which will only be available through retail outlets.
The Xbox Live Premium Gold Packs will be available in three-month and one-year variants, priced at $39.99 and $69.99 respectively. Both packs will include all of the Gold features, along with an Xbox Live headset and access to an Xbox Live Arcade game - Joust for three-month subscribers, and Bankshot Billiards for twelve month subscribers.
Three month subscribers will also receive a $10 mail-in rebate coupon for any Xbox 360 games, and 100 points to spend in the Xbox Live Marketplace, while twelve month subscribers get a $20 rebate and 200 marketplace points.
European pricing for the service has yet to be announced, but is likely to match up closely with the American price points.

Perfect Dark for the Nintendo 64 is one of the most adored first-person shooters of all time. Its success brought in a legion of fans who demanded more of heroine Joanna Dark once the game was completed. Rumors of its sequel floated around for what seemed like ages, until Rare and Microsoft announced that the series would finally return on the Xbox 360.
Of course, with half a decade passing between installments, fans of the franchise may have lost a bit of their fervor. Microsoft is trying to stir some renewed interest in the secret agent's sequel (actually, prequel) by announcing a collector's limited edition of the game to be released in a two-disc set.
The $59.99 game (the standard edition will cost $49.99) will come in a special black metallic case. Disc one will feature the standard game, and disc two will feature bonus content, including a behind-the-scenes video feature, unique gamer pictures for Xbox Live's gamer card, a custom theme for the Xbox 360 "dashboard," and the first chapter of Greg Rucka's novel Perfect Dark: Initial Vector.
Those hoping to get a little insight on the game's release date are going to have to wait. Microsoft has announced only that Perfect Dark Zero will be released "this holiday." Perfect Dark Zero is rated M for Mature.

September 8th, 2005, 02:14 Posted By: wraggster
Yesterday's press release announcing Microsoft's new game-specific laser mouse caused a spate of confusion regarding another one of the company's game controllers. At the bottom of the release was a small note about "the new Xbox 360 Controller for Windows, a wired gaming controller that works with Windows XP-based PCs and the new Xbox 360 system to deliver a consistent gaming entertainment experience across Microsoft's gaming platforms."
Why the confusion? Microsoft had made previous statements that the Xbox 360 controller would work for both PCs and the 360--did the announcement of a special "Xbox 360 controller for Windows" mean that was no longer the case? The fact that the Xbox 360 controller for Windows was a different SKU with a different price--$44.95--from the $39.99 wired Xbox 360 controller certainly made it seem that way.
Luckily, Microsoft was kind enough to clear up gamers' doubts by saying that the Xbox 360 controller for Windows is the same as the wired Xbox 360 controller--sort of. "The difference between the Windows SKU and the regular Xbox 360 controller is that the Windows SKU comes with a Windows XP driver," a rep told GameSpot. "Otherwise they are exactly the same device."
As for the price difference, the Microsoft rep claimed it was a case of "the difference between suggested retail and estimated street price," with the $39.99 price point being the latter and the $44.99 price point being the former.

What is Mimesis?
Mimesis is a brand new content distribution app that will change the way you get your modded game content forever.
It will check for the latest content from a centralized server just like the Live! service does. By choosing from a list of available content on your TV screen (each with its own a preview image/video and map details), you will simply select the one you want to play and it will download and install itself to your Xbox! That's how easy it will be to get the latest and greatest modded content for your Live! enabled games. Sound familiar? That's right, its just as easy as getting 'official' content from the Live! service. Only difference is that this content was built by fellow modders in the Xbox community, oh yeah, and its free!
What's new/fixed v1.1:
This is a minor update mainly so that we can get data logged on your xbox incase you cannot get it to work, since there seems to be a lot of that going around. Check the forums for help if you need it.

Developers who are interested in writing games for Xbox 360 can be productive without having an Xbox 360 development kit. This paper describes hardware and software that can be used to emulate Xbox 360. It also includes recommendations for programmers wanting to get a head start on Xbox 360 development.
Hardware:
The Xbox 360 console is composed of a PowerPC-based triple-core CPU and a custom ATI graphics processor. Neither of these processors is available in standard PC-based hardware. We recommend the following system for emulating Xbox 360 using a PC:
* Microsoft Windows® XP
* PC with multiple hardware threads (hyperthreads) or multiple independent CPU cores
* ATI graphics card with support for High Level Shading Language (HLSL) shader model 3.0 (when available)
* Widescreen HDTV monitor
Software:
Xbox 360 games are programmed using the Microsoft® Visual Studio® development system. The Xbox 360 development kit (XDK) supports development using either C or C++. We recommend the following software for writing Xbox 360 code using a PC:
* Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio .NET 2003
* Direct3D 9.0 Software Development Kit
* Microsoft Cross-Platform Audio Creation Tool (XACT)

Well wouldn’t you know it? Microsoft’ peripheral announcement earlier today also broke a bit of ground by them offering their new console’s controller not only, you know, for the console itself, but also in a version compatible for the PC. We’re not sure if it’s corner-cutting on continuing to make new PC peripherals or if it’s really because they want “a consistent gaming entertainment experience across Microsoft’s gaming platforms,” but what we want to know is what’s up with the $10 MSRP difference on the PC version (slated for $50) from the $39.99 console version? They’re both just going to be the same freaking USB controller, aren’t they? Well, aren’t they?

Hey guys what's up, I just wanted to ask why microsoft doesn't upgrade the origonal xbox instead of releasing a new system? If you think about it they could have saved a lot of money and time! They could have put in a new dual-core intel chip, an nvidia 7800, and some more ram and called it a day!
It would have been easy for them to just upgrade. They could have had full backward compatibility with no problems and they would have just had to upgrade existing dev-kits. This would have saved them and us money.
They could have sold an upgrade for $100.00 and outsold everyone!
Xbox 360 is the biggest marketing blunder in the history of microsoft!
If you bother too look at xbox 1 games, they are still great looking!
Microsoft could have done like sega did with the genesis and Kept updating it!
tell me what you think
later

Hey guys, My website just started taking pre-orders for the 360.
You can pre-order just the console or some games to go with it.
If you live in America I don't think they'll ship it over states.
Anyways, thanks for your time! Heres the Link
