Because Rockstar needs to find a way to make up for that lapse of cash flow when San Andreas was pulled off the shelves, come October 18th expect two find two new special editions of San Andreas to further entice gamers who must buy all things Grand Theft Auto, gamers with a scratched copy, or (yes, they exist) those who still have yet to buy the game.
For the PlayStation 2, fans will be able to purchase the Special Edition of the game, which includes a bonus DVD featuring the prequel movie and the Sunday Driver documentary. Xbox fans do not get as nice of a treatment – their special edition, The Trilogy, is just all 3 games in one $60 bundle. However, if you are planning on taking a month out of your life to complete all three games (which could take about 70 hours apiece, at least), $60 is a good deal.

According to Famitsu Weekly, TGS provided a big boost for Microsoft, generating a huge Xbox 360 buzz in Japan. Japanese gamers’ interest in purchasing the Xbox 360 nearly quadrupled after TGS, jumping from 6% to 22%. It’s difficult to know if this new figure includes consumers that were previously interested in the PS3 or Revolution, or instead, were simply undecided—the Nikkei poll that first revealed a 6% interest in the Xbox 360 also reported that 21% of those polled were undecided about which next-gen console they expected to buy. In that case, Microsoft may have won over a number of previously undecided consumers by showing off Japanese-favorites like Armored Core, Bomberman, Gundam, Resident Evil, and Ridge Racer on the Xbox 360.

Activision CEO Robert Kotick has announced plans for his company to release 40 Xbox 360 games next year—that’s more than 3 games a month! Interestingly enough, the Activision website—which is only compatible with Netscape and IE—lists only two Xbox 360 titles, Call of Duty 2 & Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland; in addition, Activision has only 36 current-gen Xbox games.
Kotick has also predicted price drops for current-gen software in 2006. Woohoo!

Visitors to the EB Games online store can no longer pre-order Microsoft's next generation console, as the company announces it has sold out of all allocated pre-order stock.
A notice on the website simply states: "We are currently sold out of our popular Xbox 360 bundles. Check back frequently for more opportunities to pre-order an Xbox 360, Microsoft's next-gen gaming system."
According to US website Gamespot, the chain of EB Games retail stores are echoing the website claim and will no longer take pre-orders for the console at this stage. Interestingly, the website advises customers to check back regularly, and store owners have suggested that further retail units may become available before the end of the year.
Whilst initial indications might suggest an exceptionally high demand for the new machine, not all online retailers are claiming to have sold out. In fact, the online store of EB Games' soon-to-be owners Gamestop boasts 'launch quantities' of the console are still available.
Microsoft's next generation console is due to ship on November 22nd in the US, with Europe following on December 2nd and Japan on December 10th. Anticipation and pre-order demand for the console appears to be at its peak in the US, where the original Xbox console enjoyed its biggest success.
Gamestop and EB Games are set to merge later in the year, which will result in the new combined company owning just under 3000 stores in the US, Canada, Europe and Puerto Rico, in addition to the successful online retail channel.

After about 2 months of development, XLIL v1.0 has been released - (XLIL - XLink Linux Installer and Launcher). Like the name says, it's a GUI application to assist users who wish to use Kai on Linux.
Cyborgas' intention was to publish a distro independant application, both easy to use and easy to install. The code is written in Python using pyQt and can run on both KDE and Gnome. Many people have been asking for this software, because running XLink Kai Linux from the command line is too geeky for some folks.
You can visit the SourceForge website for the project at: http://xlil.sf.net
Or check out a movie of XLIL in action by clicking here.
Soon XLIL will be available to download from the main TX website - but for now, head to the project site above to get a copy.
Features in v1.0:
+ Installer script to add an application entry in KDE/Gnome menu.
+ Intuitive configuration of kaid with a visual form.
+ Control Center where kaid can be started/stoped.
+ Control Center where jKaiUI can be launched.
+ Control Center with sensors for:
- UI atached/detached;
- Orbital connected/disconnected;
- Console discovered/lost.
+ Easy downloader and installer for java runtime. For people who don't have java runtime installed. Needed for jKaiUI.

Carcharius has posted an update to his work on porting Quake 3 to the Xbox:
Wow, I didn’t realise it had been almost 2 weeks since I last posted an update. I should take the opportunity to say thanks to everyone who has shown an interest in this project.
I’ve spent the last couple of weeks fixing a few things and trying to make Quake 3 work as an xbox game. At this moment I’m concentrating on getting the original Quake 3: Arena running. I’ve tried Team Arena but, that brings a few problems of its own to the table. So I’ll leave that for a later date.
There’s not really anything new to see, most of the work has been non-visible stuff, so there aren’t any new screenshots I’m afraid.
One thing that might be of interest is that I did try running Threewave CTF. I can’t remember exactly what happened though, I know it did get as far as loading the mod but for the life of me I can’t remember what happened from there! I must be getting old!
I think I got as far as trying to find a game to join but at the time I was running without a cd key so any online adventures were right out. Anyway, I’m sure some people will be pleased to know that it at least loads the Threewave front screen!

We can sort of deal with them region locking the DVD player — we’ve already got plenty of workarounds for that sort of thing — but it’s been confirmed that Microsoft has decided to be predictably lame and region lock their new Xbox 360 console for games, too, just like they did with the original Xbox. We were secretly hoping they’d steal a page from Sony’s playbook (they didn’t region lock games on the PSP), but no such luck.

Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz at the Tokyo Games Show, Microsoft Xbox VP Peter Moore has said that initiatives such as premium content downloads will offer great "value for money" for Xbox 360 consumers.
Responding to a question about the pricing of next-generation games, Moore refused to be drawn on overall pricing strategies - saying that software prices are the perogative of individual publishers, not of Microsoft.
However, he predicted that many games may be offered in limited edition bundles, similar to the already announced Perfect Dark Zero bundle, which costs an additional $10 but adds a significant amount of bonus content to the title, and that premium downloads costing "maybe another $5" will also be a key strategy for publishers.
"I think consumers will get excellent value for money for what they're going to be paying in the next generation," he concluded.
Moore also spoke at length in the interview, the first part of which is published today on the site, about the firm's software strategies in the different worldwide markets, the challenges posed by Japan, and the company's plans to meet global demand for Xbox 360 in the run-up to Christmas.
He also discusses the question of High Definition gaming, which relies on the user having a HDTV set - pointing out that "by 2008, there will be over 100 million high definition televisions available in the world, and being bought at an amazing rate."
Be sure to check back tomorrow as well, when our TGS interview with Peter Moore continues with in-depth discussion of the firm's plans for Xbox Live on 360, and its direct response to Nintendo's unveiling of the Revolution controller.

With more than two months to go before the Xbox 360 launches in Europe, a top Microsoft executive has announced that yearly price cuts are planned for the console.
Xbox 360 is due to launch in Europe on December 2, priced at £209.99 for the basic "Core System". For another £70 consumers can purchase a package which also includes a hard disk, media remote, wireless controller and other extras.
"We will wind up cost-reducing the product every year," Todd Holmdahl, corporate vice president of the Xbox product group, told Reuters. It's estimated that the 360 costs approximately $100 less per unit to manufacture than Sony's PS3, giving Microsoft more scope for price cuts.
The current gen Xbox had its priced slashed by £100 just six weeks after it debuted in Europe - apparently because less than 200,000 units were sold in the month following launch, according to some estimates.
But there's now a firmly established Xbox fanbase in the UK, and it seems unlikely that Microsoft will be forced to make such a drastic move this time around.
Microsoft was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.

Got a special news article for those wanting to buy a <a href="http://www.gbax.com/main.pl?indexgp2x.html" target="_blank" >GP2X</a> before the rest of the world can get their hands on one.
For those that dont know theres a new contender of the Future King of Homebrew Consoles and that console is the GP2X, the console itself is basically a Portable Linux Machine with Dual Cpus running at 200Mhz Each, one of the amazing things about this machine is that Gamepark Holdings have made the Console fully Open Source so that means youll see lots of Emulators and Homebrew on the GP2X from the word go. Some of the Emulation scenes best programmers have already said they are working on it and that includes people like LDChen (PSone Emu), Chui (Snes and NeoCD Emus) theres already a Gameboy emulator running on the console and with the backing of a mass of Developers you will have the ultimate console without the unfair obstructions that Sony and others force on us.
Heres some details off the site:
To sum up the GP2X:
It can play games. It can play your Movies. It can play your music. It can view photos. It can read Ebooks. It runs on just 2 AA batteries - And it can do all this in the palm of your hand or on your TV screen.
Yes that's right, this handheld can connect to the TV, console style. Watch your DivX movies on the TV. Play emulated classics on the TV. Try big screen Quake. Or just play them all on the GP2X's large 320*240 backlit screen. You get the best of both worlds.
It runs the free Linux operating system. This means a whole world of Games, Utilities and Emulators are at your disposal. Quake, Doom, SNES, Megadrive, MAME, Media players and Applications to name just a few.
It's powerful - Two 200mhz CPU's with 64meg of RAM, custom graphics hardware and decoding chips. Takes SD cards and has 64M of NAND memory. Plenty to play with. One of the most powerful and advanced handhelds today.
That means it can play movies without any re-encoding. Just put them onto an SD card. Any size. Any resolution. No messing about. The GP2X scaling chip will resize to fit the screen. No other handheld can do that.
Heres a screenshot:

Microsoft has announced that Xbox 360 will launch 22 November in North America, 2 December in Europe and 10 December in Japan.
As previously revealed, the first next-gen console to hit shelves will be available in two different bundles - core and premium packages costing £210 and £280 respectively, with the latter coming equipped with a 20GB removable hard drive.
In terms of games, a European launch line-up is yet to be confirmed, although Microsoft's chief Xbox officer Robbie Bach has stated that early adopters of the Xbox 360 will find something to accommodate their tastes.
"We expect a strong portfolio of titles on launch day and through the holidays that will appeal to fans of every genre and gamers in every region, and with more than 200 games currently in development, continuous new additions to the library are on the way."
The news comes ahead of the Tokyo Game Show - which opens its doors this Friday - where a significant number of key titles will be on show, including Gears of War, Project Gotham Racing 3, Final Fantasy XI, Kameo Elements of Power and playable versions of Need For Speed Most Wanted, Ninety-Nine Nights and Ridge Racer 6.

For Microsoft, the Tokyo Game Show is a golden opportunity for the company to break into a Japanese market that has stymied them so far. Yesterday, the tech giant divulged one of the industry's biggest unknowns--the launch date of the Xbox 360. By now, every gamer worth their analog stick knows that the console will be available in the US on November 22, just before Thanksgiving.
However, the Tokyo Game Show didn't actually start until today, and Microsoft had one more major event in the Japanese limelight--Microsoft Home and Entertainment Division vice president Robbie Bach's keynote speech to kick off the convention. Bach just concluded speaking, and this last chance for Microsoft didn't drop any bombshells as gamers had hoped.
The main theme of the keynote was Microsoft's role in ushering in the high-def era, and its continuing efforts to push the Xbox 360 into Japanese homes. Bach stressed that Microsoft has learned from the lackluster performance of the first-generation Xbox in Japan, and is concentrating more energy to attract Japanese gamers. To do this, the company has recruited top Japanese developers to make games for the console.
Bach ran a short demo of Epic Games' Gears of War, and showed a montage of several upcoming 360 titles, none of which were previously unannounced.
Microsoft has always touted the 360 as being more than just a gaming machine, and it showed that during the keynote. Bach demonstrated how the 360 can be use Windows Media Player to stream movies, Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones in this case. Bach also showed no hard feelings towards rival Apple by hooking up an iPod Shuffle to the 360 to play music.
Of course, with Microsoft's press conference yesterday, the hopes for ground-breaking news today was minimal. Much of the buzz tonight was clearly focused on what came after Bach's address. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata was scheduled for the show's second keynote, where he revealed the "revolutionary" controller for his company's next-generation console.

September 15th, 2005, 18:06 Posted By: wraggster
Ever since Microsoft revealed it was going to launch the Xbox 360 worldwide this year, gamers have been asking themselves one question--when? The majority of industry-watchers agreed that it would likely be in mid-November. After all, that would coincide with the fourth anniversary of the original Xbox's November 15 launch and the third anniversary of Xbox Live going online. It would also give developers the maximum amount of time to polish the first games for the console while allowing Microsoft to take full advantage of the holiday shopping season, which traditionally starts the day after Thanksgiving.
As the fourth quarter of 2005 approached, more clues to a mid-November launch surfaced. Even before Microsoft unveiled the machine on MTV on May 12, the network accidentally revealed the first games for the platform would be "due in November." Later that month, a Canadian subcontractor accidentally told a newspaper that the company had "a huge mandate for getting [the Xbox 360] out for Thanksgiving this year."
Now it appears that Microsoft will make its pre-Turkey-Day mandate…barely. In its pre-Tokyo Games Show conference on Thursday afternoon, Microsoft announced that it is shipping the Xbox 360 in North America on Tuesday, November 22, two days before Thanksgiving. The company also said the console is already being manufactured en masse, with "state-of-the-art facilities producing millions of units."
As previously revealed this week, Microsoft will stagger the release of the Xbox 360 by territory. Europe will get the console second on Friday, December 2, while it will hit Japanese store shelves on Saturday, December 10. Microsoft also announced the Japanese price for the Xbox 360. Instead of the two SKUs announced for North America and Europe, Japanese gamers will only have one available for 37,900 yen ($343.20). It will be the equivalent of the $399 Xbox 360 package in the US, and will come with the 20GB detachable Xbox 360 hard drive, wireless controller, media remote control, a component HD-AV cable, ethernet cable, and batteries. The first Japanese shipment will include a number of commemorative packs that also bundle in an Xbox 360 headset valued at 2,500 yen. The possibility of a "core" system sans hard drive being released in Japan in future wasn't ruled out, but there are certainly no plans to do so at this time, even though the only announced game that actually requires it at this point is Final Fantasy XI.
There will be seven games available for the Xbox 360's Japanese launch:
· Ridge Racer 6
· Frame City
· Dead or Alive 4
· Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
· (eM)-eNCHANT-arM
· Tetris: The Grandmaster Ace
· Everyparty
Other games confirmed for release during the Japanese Xbox 360 launch period (up to and including January 2006) include:
· Dynasty Warriors 5 Special
· Need for Speed: Most Wanted
· Wrestle Kingdom
· Ninety-Nine Nights
· Project Gotham Racing 3
· Tengai Makyou Ziria
Xbox 360 accessories confirmed for the Japanese launch period include:
· Wireless controller
· Controller
· Faceplates
· Memory units
· Wireless LAN adapter
· Play and charge kit
· Rechargeable battery
· D-connection HD AV cable
· Component HD AV cable
· VGA HD AV cable
· S-video HD AV cable
· Headset
· Media remote
"This holiday season, gamers in Japan, Europe and North America pining to experience jaw-dropping high-definition graphics, unmatched online play and compelling digital entertainment features of Xbox 360 will finally have the chance," said chief Xbox officer Robbie Bach. "Renowned development studios around the world are busy putting the finishing touches on their Xbox 360 games. We expect a strong portfolio of titles on launch day and through the holidays that will appeal to fans of every genre and gamers in every region, and with more than 200 games currently in development, continuous new additions to the library are on the way."
Of the 200 games Bach mentioned, 27 will be on display at the Xbox 360 booth at the Tokyo Game Show. Those in bold are expected to be playable.
· (eM)-eNCHANT-arM (FromSoftware Inc.)
· Bomberman -- Act Zero (Hudson Soft Co. Ltd.)
· Call of Duty 2 (Activision Inc.)
· Chromehounds (Sega)
· Dead Rising (Capcom)
· Dynasty Warriors 5 Special (Koei Co. Ltd.)
· Everyparty (Microsoft Game Studios)
· Far East of Eden -- Ziria (Hudson Soft)

Microsoft Japan has announced pricing and launch details for the Xbox 360 in Japan, with the console set to launch in the region at 37,900 Yen (around 280 Euro) including a hard drive, wireless joypad and multimedia remote control.
Only one version of the system, and one price point, will be available at launch - unlike Europe and North America where a Core System model, lacking a hard drive and remote control and sporting only a wired controller, will also be available.
Explaining the decision not to release the Core System in Japan, local Xbox boss Yoshihiro Maruyama said that by comparison with the rest of the world, Japan has a very mature broadband infrastructure, and that he expects the region to have a high demand for content such as MMOGs which will need the hard drive to function.
However, he did not rule out the possibility of launching a cut-price Core System style bundle at some point in future, saying only that there is "currently no decision on this... There is a possibility that this may take place."
Maruyama revealed that there are 100 titles currently in development which will be released in the Japanese market on the Xbox 360, of which some 66 have already been announced, with 200 titles in total in development for the system around the world.
He also announced that around 27 games will be on display at the Xbox 360 stand at the Tokyo Games Show this weekend, with about ten of them expected to be playable. Among the games being showcased are Epic Games' Gears of War and Tetsuya Mizuguchi's Ninety-Nine Nights, both of which were demonstrated at the press conference in Shibuya.
A wide range of Japanese publishers is supporting the Xbox 360 with software at the show, including Konami, Namco, Capcom, Sega, Taito, Yuke's, Koei, Square Enix, Bandai, Genki, Hudson and From Software, with the latter expected to announce two more titles for the platform over the course of the weekend.

At the Reuters Technology and Telecoms Summit in Tokyo today, Chief Xbox Officer Robbie Bach announced an expected lag of seven to ten days between launches of the Xbox 360 in North America, Europe, and Japan (”in the same holiday season”) to give Microsoft “a chance to manage the logistics.” MS has previously confirmed that it will be launching its next console in a simultaneous worldwide release during Holiday 2005, and most assuredly in the month of November (if rumors of the 4th or 25th are to be believed).
Bach also had something to say regarding recent polls that placed the 360 well behind its competition from Sony and Nintendo in the minds of Japanese consumers: “None of that is worth anything…. Ultimately if we had great games, people would have put a big, black Xbox in the living room. We learned a lot from the first launch of Xbox in Japan. People didn’t get excited about the games.”
Unfortunately, analysts don’t have high hopes for Bill’s brighter box in the Land of the Rising Sun, either. Tokyo-based Deutsche Securities analyst Takashi Oya states: “Microsoft will have done well if it gets 10 percent market share in Japan,” and KBC Securities Analyst Hiroshi Kamide believes the 360 will be a success if “sales match the market share of Nintendo’s next offering.” None of those interviewed think the Xbox can take the PlayStation’s number-one Japanese market position, however, at least in this next console cycle.

One of the aspects of the Xbox 360 launch that Microsoft has been touting is the global launch of the system, which left many to believe that come one lucky day in November, children all over the world would be opening their Xbox 360s and duking it out over Xbox Live in a quasi-"We are the World" moment.
It appears that won't be the case. Microsoft Chief Xbox Officer Robbie Bach told Reuters today that the launch of the Xbox 360 in Japan and Europe will occur seven to 10 days after the North American launch. Microsoft hasn't announced a specific US release date for the next generation console yet, but conventional wisdom points towards a mid-November date.
"We will launch in North America, Europe and Japan in the same holiday season," Bach said to Reuters in a summit held by the news organization in Tokyo today. "There will probably be a week or 10 days in between the different territories, just to give us a chance to manage the logistics."
Microsoft will be holding a pre-Tokyo Game Show press conference in Japan tomorrow to unveil additional information regarding the Xbox 360. The company has begun advertising the console in Japanese magazines this week, which publicly announces that the next-generation gaming console will be released at the end of the year in the country.
In America, the Xbox 360 will be offered in two SKUs, the Xbox 360 Core System and the Xbox 360. The two products will be sold at $299 and $399, respectively, and break down as follows:
Xbox 360 Core System - $299
- Xbox 360 console
- Wired controller
- Detachable faceplate
- Xbox Live Silver membership
- Standard AV cables
Xbox 360 - $399
- Xbox 360 console
- 20GB detachable hard drive
- Wireless controller
- Wireless Xbox Live headset
- High-definition AV cables
- Ethernet cable
- Xbox 360 Media Remote Control (limited time)
- Detachable faceplate
- Xbox Live Silver membership
