please, sign this petition, and lets get as many votes as we can so we can hopefully change Warner's mind to return to being format neutral, or go HD-DVD exclusive. This would also show the remaining HD-DVD exclusive studios, Universal & Paramount, that HD-DVD still has supporters, thus they shouldn't switch to Blu-Ray. We have a chance to save a superior format from collapsing under the weight of the greedy Sony corporation and its inferior Blu-Ray format, let's do it!

I have a quick little note about something that very few outside of Redmond knew about and that is Xbox 360 Project "Helium". It was a concept to combine a high-end gaming Windows PC with a Xbox 360 motherboard as a daughterboard. It never was even remotely implemented and moved off the drawing boards but the idea was for a third party manufacturer to license and include a daughter board made by Microsoft that would be housed in a desktop PC to add an Xbox 360 functionality to the PC. Instead they went with Games For Windows LIVE.
The concept was not unlike a videogame PC hybrid like the Amstrad Mega PC and IBM Sega Teradrive PC that combined a 16-bit Sega Genesis/Megadrive with a PC or the Creative 3DO Blaster card that added 3DO functionality to a PC. Crazier ideas for game system hybrids have been made such as the MegaDrive Aiwa CSD-G1M combination Sega MegaDrive CD and portable boombox.

It looks like Pandemic's tardy explosion-em-up Mercenaries 2 has been delayed yet again, this time to the end of the year in August 2008.
That of course, is if we can believe the word of internet retailers Amazon and Game Stop, which have both coincidently opted for an August 25 ship date for Pandemic's free-roaming action-fest.
The sequel, which is in development for Xbox 360, PS3, PS2 and PC, was delayed before from its Christmas 2007 release date into 2008.
Now that it's probably been pushed back again, we're really hoping it manages to impress more than the initial hands-on we had last year.
We've left a message with EA's PR department and hopefully they'll be able to shed some light. Otherwise, the wait is on. Again...

Ubisoft's latest financials reveal that Prince of Persia is to return during the company's 2008-2009 financial year, which begins in April.
Apart from Prince of Persia Classic on Xbox Live Arcade, we haven't seen much of the Prince since he went out on last-gen consoles with a healthy bang in the shape of The Two Thrones.
However, the new game has evidently been in development for some time, having featured in the leaked September 2006 documents some bright spark at Ubisoft uploaded to a public FTP. Back then, the concept artwork and other files were labelled "POP0", so perhaps it's a prequel.
Either way, we look forward to his return - if Ubisoft can marry the evolved platforming of Assassin's Creed to the brilliant characters and puzzles of the original revamp, Sands of Time, then it will be a game to remember.
No word on platforms of release date specifics, but we'll let you know when we do.
Ubisoft's latest financials also echo reports that new Anno and Shaun White snowboarding games are in development somewhere in the publisher's globe-spanning network of studios.

Yesterday our jaws were left stuck to the floor after watching the Far Cry 2 tech demo showing off the incredible capabilities of the engine. Today, we've been granted five new screens.
Better-looking than Crysis? Take a look at those shots and decide for yourself.
It also begs the question of course, what kind of PC hardware will you require to get the game running at that level of detail? But then it is coming to Xbox 360 and PS3 too, which Ubisoft confirmed at the start of the year.
Should you have missed yesterday's tech demo trailer, you can find that here. You'd be mad to miss it.

Electronic Arts has written a letter to Fox News Channel asking the media company to correct alleged inaccuracies that appeared during a recent segment on Bioware's Mass Effect game.
The letter, obtained by Kotaku, was written by Jeff Brown, EA's VP of communications.
"As the parent company of BioWare, the studio which created the game, EA would like you to set the record straight on a number of errors and misstatements which incorrectly characterise the story and character interactions in Mass Effect," Brown wrote.
The headline for Fox's televised story indicated that Mass Effect showed full digital nudity, with a reporter indicating that the game allowed players to engage in graphic sex and was being marketed to kids and teenagers.
EA's letter described the game's content - comparing the sexual content to that of network television - and made it clear that the game was rated Mature.
Mass Effect was initially banned in Singapore due to the inclusion of a sex scene between a human woman and a female alien, but that ban was later overturned and the game was released under an M18 rating.
The scene gained media attention and attracted some criticism, leading up to Monday's segment on Fox News television.
"As videogames continue to take audiences away from television, we expect to see more TV news stories warning parents about the corrupting influence of interactive entertainment," Brown's letter continued.
"But this represents a new level of recklessness."
Fox has not yet responded to the letter at the time of writing.

Not to be confused with the Zune 2.3 firmware update, Microsoft is today pushing out the Zune 2.3 software update, which brings with it a whole slew of fixes but no real new features. If the rundown of those fixes given by the ever-helpful Cesar of the Zune Insider blog are any indication, however, it seems that there are few areas of that software that aren't touched by the update. Among the problems getting ironed out are various Marketplace issues, as well as some nagging podcast problems (like not being able to subscribe to anything larger than 10MB), setup issues, and UI mishaps, not to mention a whole mess of sync issues that have supposedly now been sorted, to name a few things. In other words, the sort of update you probably want, and no doubt wish you never needed.

Microsoft Ireland Entertainment and Devices Division manager Orla Sheridan reportedly told Silicon Republic that the platform holder had "imminent" plans to 'boost the number of movies available for download on its Xbox Live Marketplace for Ireland from the present 30 or 40 films to up to 400 movies, in line with the US.'
However, in an email to Next-Gen, Microsoft UK said that talk of a major increase in the number of movies available over the European 360 Video Store any time soon was premature, although the spokesperson did add that a less dramatic wave of new content would be made available across Europe in the very near future.

Today was supposed to be the day that Microsoft released the free download of the Xbox Live Arcade original Undertow to make up for those days of system downtime and instability Xbox Live users suffered through over the holidays. Which makes today the perfect time for the system to come crashing to its knees again.
When many gamers tried to retrieve Undertow this morning, they got a message telling them the system "can't retrieve information from Xbox LIVE. Please try again later." The message also helpfully points out that this is a status code: 8015000a.

Regular readers will be clued up on the fact that a playable 360 demo for Codemasters' Turning Point: Fall of Liberty went live this morning. It weighs in at just over 1GB and gives you a taste of the game's first moments.
You can read up on Fall of Liberty as much as you'd like here, or just hit the movie player to your right from some direct-feed footage.
Look out for the far too obvious (and worrying) glitch. Let's hope that gets ironed out before the final game...

Well, this is a surprise. Though it seemed like an unstoppable juggernaut of multiplayer dominance, it appears that Halo 3 has been ousted from the top of the Xbox Live activity chart by Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4. The rest of the top 5 for last week was rounded out by Guitar Hero III, Gears of War and Rock Band.
We have to admit it: We're pretty impressed. Though, now that we think about it, it kind of makes sense. We have been hearing a lot more chatter about friends crawling up the CoD 4 ranks than getting together Halo games as of late. It's not like you can make too much of it after one week, but it's definitely something we're keeping an eye on. What about you? Which one's still getting your gaming minutes?

A new hack and this zAlternator app from PityOnU over at ZuneBoards lets the Zune masquerade as a generic "Windows Portable Device" (gee, imagine that!) or even an iPod, opening the device to new horizons of user-friendly content management. WPD is the real win here, allowing you to use Windows Media Player, Winamp or whatever other popular app you prefer for managing your media. The iTunes features are a bit more untested, but theoretically should work. To get you Zune to cooperate, there's a simple unlock hack to perform, but after that it should be pretty smooth sailing -- let us know what it's like on the other side.

According to the latest NPD group report, during the month of December Blu-ray players held 60 percent of the HD media player market -- despite the fact that HD DVD players were considerably cheaper. While that might've helped Warner in its decision to go Blu, the move has definitely had a dramatic effect on player sales since. According to the same study the week after the announcement, Blu-ray players were able to grab 93 percent of the market, which puts the year to date (short, we know) share for Blu-ray players at 70 percent. Granted, it's hard to put too much stock in just a week or two of data, but if this and the recent media sales numbers (85 percent) becomes a trend, maybe this won't be such a slow death for HD DVD after all.

Microsoft is definitely and not maybe sure Oasis songs will be downloadable for Rock Band.
Xbox Live blogger Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb confirmed the news, listing the content now available on the US Marketplace.
It was rumoured Oasis tracks would make an appearance last week, after MS accidentally said so on Xbox.com and then tried to pretend nothing happened.
But now available are Don't Look Back in Anger, Live Forever and Wonderwall for 160 Points (GBP 1.36 / EUR 1.86) a pop. Or you can bundle them all together for 440 Points (GBP 3.74 / EUR 5.12).
Rock Band is still scheduled for release in Europe this quarter, although exactly when is still up in the air like someone on a trampoline.
