Greetings to our old friends and colleagues and a Happy New Year
It has been an awful long time since we have shown any activity in the scene and the break has been much needed after a solid 6 years working at the top level.
It's really great to see a thriving 360 community although our wish is still to have a fully working homebrew solution on RETAIL machines in 2008. We have friends in the scene who have done some really amazing things with a 360 dev machine in the last year, hopefully that can be transferred to the retail unit this year. There are no sleeping dogs so who knows what will happen ?
Anyway, I got my first 360 ROD brick over Christmas so instead of sending it back to M$ I took it apart to fix. I have come up with a very simple, very cheap and very effective quick-fix solution to most ROD problem machines. I have so far tested the method on 18 Xbox's and every one is still up and running (much to my surprise I might add - the older versions of this console are junk). It's Chinese New Year at the moment so as soon as we are all done i will get it packaged up and shipped out to the usual stockists. Hopefully it can work for you
The kit will include both T10 and T8 screwdrivers and the prices are as follows (1 Kit Per Xbox 360):
1 Kit $12.95 each
10 Kits $11.95 each
50 Kits $9.95 each
100 Kits $8.95 each

If you’re really into multiplayer on XBox Live, you’ll embrace any advantage you can get your hands on. So you might want to check out what the people at HG (or Head in the Game) Controllers are now selling. They feel that having to take your fingers off the analog sticks to push a button is a waste of precious reaction time, so they’ve created several modded variations of the XBox 360 controller with duplicate buttons placed on the underside. These can be pressed using the fingers that are holding the controller, giving you a split second competitive advantage over those playing with a stock controller.
The HG controllers have different combinations of the A, B, X and Y buttons on the back while a Halo 3 specific version also includes a duplicate of the right shoulder button. For games requiring a specific button to be continuously pushed, there’s also a toggle switch mod that can be added to the corner or center of the controller.
The Halo 3 and 4-Button modded controllers are the most expensive at $89.99, while a 2-Button version is $69.99. The toggle switch mod can also be added to any of them for $12.50 to $17.50 depending on where it’s installed.

The word on the street, nay, the word straight from Jeff Bell's mouth, is that the Xbox 360 is experiencing stock shortages, which could hurt sales for January and February. We'd already heard of Elite shortages, but now they seem to be more widespread. "You could say we misjudged demand," said Bell, head of global marketing for Microsoft games. "We're literally out of stock in many stores. We think this will have an impact on our sales." Apparently the 1.3 million Xboxen sold in December didn't leave many sitting around for the rest of winter, so we could be seeing shortages through February, according to Bell -- but they should be able to meet demand by spring. It almost sounds like Microsoft is playing hard to get like a certain other console we know of, but we'll bite our tongue until we can get a tearful confession out of Major Nelson. Or, you know, two straight years of stock scarcity.

Finally, Michael Bay has stepped down from Cheese Mountain to pontificate on the finer points of the HD DVD vs. Blu-ray war. Speaking from the inner-sanctum of his lair -- located equidistant from the Church of Scientology and a gigantic cotton candy stand -- Mr. Bay reminds us that, "Blu-ray's better, and I told everyone," then goes on to further prop himself by adding, "I was very vocal about it. I knew HD [DVD] was not going to make it." We're glad that Bay can sleep at night, safe in the knowledge that the mere "quality" of the formats decided the winner of this battle, rather than massive business partnerships fueled by the desire for marketshare. He wrapped up his message (actually given at an awards ceremony held by the Visual Effects Society) by saying, "Am I thrilled? It really wasn't my fight, but remember what I said in the press? I was kind of saying HD [DVD]'s going to lose... No one believed me." He then slammed a trophy he was receiving to the floor, pointed to the packed room, and yelled, "In your face, HD DVD!"

Sierra Entertainment, a division of Vivendi Games, announced today that World in Conflict - the groundbreaking action-strategy game that claimed the coveted E3 2007 Game Critics "Best Strategy Game" award and topped many "Best of 2007" lists - will appear on the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system this fall.
World in Conflict, originally created by Sierra's-own Massive Entertainment, is being redesigned for consoles and will also include a host of new content for both the single-player campaign and the game's award-winning multiplayer mode. The new content will also be made available for personal computer as an add-on to the original World in Conflict game. More information on the PC release will be provided soon.
The World in Conflict game for Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 system is being developed by Massive Entertainment in conjunction with Sierra's-own Swordfish Studios.
"World in Conflict was one of the best games on any platform in 2007 and its innovative action-focused gameplay makes it a perfect fit for the transition to consoles," said Martin Tremblay, president of worldwide studios, Sierra Entertainment. "World in Conflict is being reinvented for Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 system, with innovative features and new single player and multiplayer content created for the console audience. World in Conflict on consoles will be an amazing extension of an already great gaming franchise."
World in Conflict is a true genre-bender, effectively carving out an entirely new "Action-Strategy" category which appeals to all kinds of video game players, from action junkies to first-person-shooter enthusiasts to strategy purists.
The unique cross-genre design and universal appeal is what led global media to make World in Conflict the most critically lauded strategy game of 2007. The game collected a clean sweep of "Best Strategy Game" awards from E3 2007, countless "Editor's Choice" awards from the world's top reviewers, and was the clear choice for "Best Strategy Game of 2007" during the end-of-year awards season. In addition, the game received several additional "Best of 2007" awards and nominations in categories that included "Best PC Game," "Best Graphics," "Best Multiplayer," "Most Innovative," and more.

People's Hero Peter Crouch is a benevolent sort, so when EA asked him if he wanted to be in FIFA Street 3 looking like a Barbie doll that's been in a microwave for 8 minutes, he had no problem with that. However, it turns out that EA has honoured his sacrifice with a specific Peter Crouch Achievement on Xbox 360.
This isn't news exactly - the Achievement list for FIFA Street 3 has been public knowledge for a while - but it felt like such a massive cultural event that we could not let it pass by without acknowledgement.
"Hat Trick Hero" is the Achievement, which involves scoring a hat-trick with Crouch in any game mode except Practice. Sadly this does mean that you can cheat and just pick him in the England team in one of the head-to-head modes, rather than scoring 20 Gamebreaker goals to unlock his "Team C", but we like to think people will honour the People's Hero by putting in the requisite time anyway.
After all, Crouch himself had to put in his time at rubbish clubs like Dan-who-puts-the-screenshots-up's Aston Villa before he was able to realise his full potential by spectacularly almost qualifying England for Euro 2008.
For additional Crouchigols, YouTube is your friend. FIFA Street 3 is out on PS3, 360 and DS next Friday, with a review going up soon.

SquareTrade, a firm that specialises in electronics warranties, has found that of a sample of 1000 Xbox 360 consoles, the failure rate was 16.4 per cent.
That compares to a failure rate of just 3 per cent for the PlayStation 3 and Wii, from sample sizes "in the high hundreds" reports 1UP.com.
And according to SquareTrade CEO Steve Abernethy, the overheating problem associated with Microsoft's console may cause the failure rate to climb.
"It is reasonable to believe these failure rates will increase over time, since the Xbox 360 failure issues tend to increase with prolonged use where overheating appears the main culprit," he said.
According to the company's data, the much-publicised 'Red Rings of Death' error accounted for around 60 per cent of the sample failures. Of the different hardware variations of the Xbox 360, Abernethy stated that of the associated problems he "would estimate most if not all were the original motherboard."
Last year, Xbox boss Peter Moore offered an apology to consumers who had been forced to send away their Xbox 360 consoles for repair, with the company extending the warranty of the machine to three years.
Although Microsoft would not offer a solid figure on failure rates, Moore told GamesIndustry.biz at the time that, "you know it when you see it. We saw it, and it was unacceptable."
Again, Microsoft has refused to disclose any internal repair figures, with a spokesperson telling GamesIndustry.biz this monring, "The majority of Xbox 360 owners have had a great experience with their consoles.
"We do not disclose internal hardware repair data and we do not comment on speculation."

Title will feature multiplayer elements for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3
Following earlier reports based on comments made by Microsoft's Don Mattrick that Grand Theft Auto IV would feature "multiplayer support" that was "unique to 360", developer Rockstar Games has confirmed that both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions of the game will feature multiplayer content.
"It's always something we've been open about, both versions will support online multiplayer capabilities," a Rockstar spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz, although exact details on those capabilities have not been announced as yet.
Precisely what Mattrick meant by his comments is now unclear, although one possibility is that he may have instead been referring to the Xbox Live experience as "unique", rather than alluding to specific exclusivity of the title.
Grand Theft Auto IV is scheduled for release on both platforms on April 29.

Tech blog Gizmodo ran an intriguing rumor about the potential of Netflix streaming movie service coming to the Xbox 360 on Live Marketplace. The speculation stems from an alleged survey sent to Netflix members which asked:
"If as part of your Netflix membership you could instantly watch movies and TV episodes on your TV with your Xbox 360, how likely would you/anyone in your house be to do that?"
With all those "ifs" noted, this rumor sounds awfully believable right about now. Recent events show Microsoft aggressively approaching the expansion of its business this year, and specifically addressing vulnerabilities and opportunities it sees out there.
Netflix looks like the perfect next piece of the puzzle to bring the fight to the blossoming battle for where people turn when they want to watch a video downloaded over the Net. In fact, while Microsoft's disinterest in becoming a video rental store probably precludes their making an outright offer for Netflix, forging a strong partnership takes on not one, but two of their other big rivals.

The former EA man, who joined Microsoft six months ago, promised that the company was working to address the Xbox 360 hardware shortage issues in North America.
"We'd hoped to have a strong showing in North America this holiday season, and we had a stronger showing than anticipated," he said in the podcast. "So we had some shortages, we weren't able to deliver enough hardware against demand that was in the market.
"That's a great problem to have, we're addressing that in the coming year - it's going to take us a little bit of time to amp up our manufacturing, but we're really encouraged that people purchased as many games and as many boxes as they did on our platform - we think that bodes well for the future."

Tomorrow will also see Commanders: Attack of Genos added to the Live Arcade catalogue, we just forgot to tell you about it yesterday because of, er, all the earthquakes.
It costs 800 Microsoft Points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.60) and is a turn-based strategy affair where you roam around maps trying to defeat a genetically modified super-race. You get a fancy hero unit to help, plus all sorts of regular muscle from missile launchers to bombers and infantry.
The game boasts art deco-style visuals, although we would use technical terms such as "cartoony" or "looks a bit like Advance Wars" to describe it. Pop into our Commanders: Attack of Genos gallery to see for yourself.
There are a couple of endings on offer, once you've waded through around 15 missions, and apparently it's all quite ironic - hopefully not in the Alanis Morissette sense of the word. Silly old bat.
Discs of Tron will also be available on Live Arcade tomorrow, and we will be giving you our thoughts on both sharpish.

Amid similar rumours circulating the net, Microsoft UK has confirmed to CVG that the Xbox 360 edition of Banjo-Kazooie is "still on target" for 2008, and will be out later this year.
"As announced at E3 last year, the next installment in the popular Banjo franchise is still on target for 2008," a Microsoft spokesperson told CVG.
"We share the excitement of Banjo fans worldwide as anticipation 'builds' for the game's release later this year."
The confirmation comes after Microsoft Game Studios boss Shane Kim said at DICE he's "super-excited" about what Rare is doing with the Banjo sequel, and that he thinks the platformer "is going to be a big hit for us this holiday".
To date Microsoft's revealed very, very little about Banjo Kazooie's debut on Xbox, but presumably we're going to be hearing (and seeing) lots more of the bear and bird very soon, if it's out this year.

Reader Kevin's XBOX 360 suffered the usual Red Ring of Death, so he sent it in to be repaired. He got back a different XBOX 360 with a different serial number. That would be no big deal, except Kevin has purchased a bunch of content through XBOX Live... content that is no longer fully functional due to Microsoft's broken DRM.
Here's a quick summary:- November 2007: Kevin's XBOX 360 is replaced, causing his content to lose full functionality. He calls Microsoft.
- Microsoft keeps Kevin on the phone for an hour trying different methods of restoring functionality to his content. Nothing works. They say they will call him back in two weeks.
- They do not call him back, so he calls them. Microsoft makes him repeat the steps he tried the first time he called. They tell him they will call him back in two weeks.
- This cycle repeats twice more before Kevin gets a call from Frank at XBOX escalations. It's now the second week of January.
- Kevin periodically speaks to Frank. Frank has no answers for him.
- February 7, 2008: Frank tells Kevin that there's nothing more he can do and, when Kevin asks when he can expect a resolution, Frank says "hopefully sometime in 2008."
We suggested that Kevin escalate his complaint. He did. This resulted in another call from Frank confirming that there was nothing Microsoft can do.

With Microsoft's announcement today to buy cell phone software maker Danger Inc., the deal may not only strengthen the software giant's position in consumer mobile phones and strengthen defenses against Google's Android platform, but also mean a new addition for gamers.
The acquisition will provide more applications to Xbox through existing Danger services, Microsoft said. However, the possibility of a portable Xbox arises from Danger's wide range of software, which can be made capable of playing some Xbox games, with the company's gadgets used as the foundation for a portable gaming device capable of making phone calls.

Best Buy, the largest US consumer electronics chain, said it will recommend that consumers choose the Sony high-definition video format and will feature Blu-ray hardware and software promotions in all its stores.
"Because we believe that Blu-ray is fast emerging as that single format, we have decided to focus on Blu-ray products," Brian Dunn, Best Buy's president and chief operating officer, said in a statement.
Netflix, which is the country's largest online DVD rental service said it will stock high-def movies exclusively in Blu-ray.
Netflix has been stocking high-definition movies in both formats since early 2006, but said in a statement that all of its new high-definition movie purchases will be Blu-ray and that it will phase out HD DVD discs by the end of the year.

The HD DVD Promotions Group has issued a statement following a pair of news stories Monday that saw two leading brands in the home entertainment industry endorsing Blu-ray.
"We have long held the belief that HD DVD is the best format for consumers based on quality and value, and with more than 1 million HD DVD players on the market, it's unfortunate to see Netflix make the decision to only stock Blu-ray titles going forward. While the Best Buy announcement says they will recommend Blu-ray, at least they will continue to carry HD DVD and offer consumers a choice at retail."
