Japan's NHK has followed up The Hollywood Reporter's earlier indications Toshiba was ready to dump its money-losing HD DVD business, with news that the company is prepared to cease manufacturing software and hardware, at a loss of hundreds of millions of dollars. This caps the worst week ever for red, when HD DVD was dumped by Netflix and Wal-mart, pushed to the background by Best Buy and put on -- an apparently incredibly short -- deathwatch right here. Toshiba is mum on the subject right now, but we hear there's plenty of cheap players and movies in a dumpster around back of the HQ.
Update: Along with an English translation of the NHK's article (Thanks sfditty!) comes additional confirmation from Reuters sources, it's a wrap. Toshiba is shutting down its DVD manufacturing facilities in Aomori Prefecture, Japan, while official word is expected "soon".

A recent Ziff-Davis survey – distributed amongst subscribers to their 1UP, EGM, and Games for Windows Magazine brands – asked "If Microsoft came out with a portable gaming device (similar to PSP, Nintendo DS/Lite, etc.), how likely are you to purchase the device?" Answers are comprised of the typical survey stuff, Very Likely to Not at All Likely with a Don't Know thrown in for the more indecisive gamers out there.
While rumblings concerning the long-rumored Xboy have been plenty scarce of late, Shane Kim did address it during a Q&A at the D.I.C.E. seminar held earlier this month. As reported by Gamasutra, he said, "Never say never ... Launching a portable device is like launching a Zune, launching another Xbox 360... we have a ways to go [to compete effectively in the music space]... Zune is not just about the device, it's about the service as well."
Considering that he sure didn't seem eager to say "enn oh" the idea that Redmond is soliciting consumer interest in such a device is far from surprising. However, if they're still at the whole "Does anyone want this thing?" phase, it would be quite some time before any of us got our mitts on an honest-ta-gawd Xboy.

Following yesterday's unveiling in PC Gamer, Electronic Arts has sent us a press release providing more details on the upcoming Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3. Like C&C3: Tiberium Wars, the game will come out for consoles as well, announced for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
In Red Alert 3, the Soviets have been toying with time travel to try and save "Mother Russia," only to inadvertently cause a third world power, The Empire of the Rising Sun. In this alternate timeline, World War III has started between the Allies, Soviets and Empire. The game will feature a co-operative campaign mode.
EA also announced a PC-only beta of RA3 for anyone with a copy of C&C3: Kane's Wrath; details of the beta are expected this summer. Red Alert 3 is being developed by EA Los Angeles (Tiberium Wars, Battle for Middle-Earth). No release date was announced. While we applaud Tiberium Wars' gamepad-friendly controls, we're still crossing our fingers that the PS3 version supports keyboard and mouse.

We're not exactly sure what's going on in Toshiba land, but shortly after not-exactly-believable whispers made the rounds of the firm suddenly deciding to try its hand at making a Blu-ray player, we're now seeing reports stating that it will pull the plug on its beloved format "in the coming weeks." Citing unnamed industry "sources," The Hollywood Reporter is suggesting that the end may be nigh for the HD DVD format. Jodi Sally, VP of marketing for Toshiba America Consumer Products, was quoted as saying that "given the market developments in the past month, Toshiba will continue to study the market impact and the value proposition for consumers, particularly in light of its recent price reductions on all HD DVD players." Of course, we aren't exactly equating said statement to waving the white flag or anything, but whatever the case, it seems the death watch is in full effect.

With HD DVD, things are just going from bad, to really bad, to worse, to car-crash-you-can't-stop-looking-at. You can file this one under that latter category, as Wal-Mart has officially announced its intentions to stop stocking HD DVD players and movies by June. According to reports, the retailer came to the decision after Netflix and Best Buy made announcements concerning their position in the HD format war. Susan Chronister of Wal-Mart wrote on the company's blog, "By June Wal-Mart will only be carrying Blu-ray movies and hardware machines, and of course standard-def movies, DVD players, and up-convert players." Susan went on to deliver what we consider a total burn by adding, "if you bought the HD [DVD] player like me, I'd retire it to the bedroom, kid's playroom, or give it to your parents to play their John Wayne standard-def movies, and make space for a BD player." Look, we're not gonna say that this is it for HD DVD, but... uh, it doesn't look real great.

HD DVD fans, we hate to do this to you, but it's time we called it. HD DVD is now officially on Engadget deathwatch. We haven't put anything important on deathwatch since TiVo in 2005 (which, as you may recall, still stands); but just as then, we have to step back from our personal preferences and investments in media and gear, ignore the rumors and hearsay, and take a close look at where things stand. We don't need Michael Bay to tell us the writing's on the wall.
So far this battle's been decided primarily by two factors: studio support and ubiquity of content. It's clear Sony's camp couldn't even come close to trumping Toshiba in hardware price war that's ensued over the past couple of years. But as it turns out, consumers that just spent thousands on a new HDTV weren't too concerned with a couple hundred dollars between players, and despite whatever users price won HD DVD, the PS3 Blu-ray trojan kept the competition at bay. Meanwhile, most consumers were too smart and too cautious to buy early in a format war. Most have simply waited this thing out, and while Warner's announcement to go exclusively Blu was obviously huge, it was only indicative of a trend -- it didn't set it.
If you look at the timeline, even before Warner announced its intentions to go Blu-ray exclusive, HD DVD's studio base was already shrunken from its heyday, leaving it with fewer titles both in number and sales. Warner was just another push in the direction things were already headed -- the numbers already consistently showed Blu was ahead in media and install base, which has only become more exaggerated in the last couple of months now that Blu amassed some 70% of studio-released titles.
But if you ask us, it's the ubiquity of content that sealed the deal. It wasn't until Blockbuster and later Netflix -- two of the three most widely used disc rental businesses in the US -- went Blu-ray exclusively that we knew HD DVD wasn't long for this world.
So here's the deal, Toshiba. As much as we hate putting any worthy technology on deathwatch, for the sake of the greater good we hope you guys just roll over and cut your losses so we can all move on. But if you really want off this deathwatch, you're going to not only going to have to retain Universal and Paramount (which owns Dreamworks), you also need to win at least a few back from Blu (Warner and Disney would be a great start), and get hardware in consumers' hands, even if it means practically giving it away. It's not going to be easy -- hell, we think it's actually pretty hopeless -- but hey, that's why you're on deathwatch, innit?

Responding to a report issued this week by an independent warranty firm indicating that the Xbox 360 has a 16.4 percent failure rate, Microsoft said today that company officials have not seen the report but question its validity.
Yesterday, warranty issuer SquareTrade revealed the results of its recent examination of Xbox 360 failure rates. The company said that, based on a sample group of 1,000 warrantees it had issued, 16.4 percent had service calls -- more than half for general hardware failures (a.k.a. Three Red Lights) and the rest for disk drive problems, hardware freezes and other issues.
"Microsoft does not comment on hardware failure rates [emphasis by Microsoft], nor do we comment on speculation," Microsoft Joe DiMiero told IGN in an e-mail message today. "We have not seen the report, and are unfamiliar with the agency that filed it. Based on the enthusiast community's feedback yesterday, the methodology of this report is suspect."
In a post on its buyer's blog yesterday, SquareTrade laid out some of the results of its findings but did not provide the entire report and did not mention the sample size and methodology of the study on the blog. A SquareTrade rep told IGN the company used a 1,000-warranty sample.
On its web site, SquareTrade describes itself as "the largest independent warranty provider" and got its start in online merchant verification on 1999 working with retailers like eBay.

via Joystiq
We know it's a little weird to be pumped for Xbox 360 chipsets, but we here at Joystiq HQ are all pretty excited about "Jasper". When we see each other in the halls we'll often exchange a look and we don't even need to speak it, we just know: It's Jasper. Now, if Jacob Metcalf (the guy who broke the Bungie/Microsoft split story) is right, we'll have to start exchanging an additional two looks for the upcoming "Opus" and "Valhalla".
The first, "Opus" is basically a third-generation ("Falcon") board built to fit first generation ("Xenon") cases, primarily for the recycling of red-ringed systems, giving them cooler, more dependable guts (though no HDMI). The second, "Valhalla", is rumored to combine the 65nm CPU and 65nm GPU into one awesome super chip. It would only require one cooling system, meaning Valhalla would be quieter and (one would hope) more dependable. It would also be considerably cheaper.
Both chips (again, if Metcalf is on the money) are a ways off, with Opus coming in 2008 or 2009 and Valhalla following a year later. As excited as we are for the new builds (even though our eyes are getting sore from exchanged looks) we'll be happiest if this news means Microsoft won't euthanize the 360 as quickly as its predecessor.

Rare has said that part of its "new direction" for Banjo-Kazooie 3 will involve introducing a "unique" multiplayer mode unlike anything currently out there.
The developer aired the news when answering questions from fans on its website.
"Banjo won't be a shooter... But it also won't be a traditional platformer," begins the statement on the website. "We somewhat grandly like to think that it will be a different take on the genre."
"We aren't in the business of crushing little boys' dreams so your multiplayer hopes will be answered. The 'new direction' that Banjo is taking should offer a multiplayer experience unique to anything currently available."
Banjo-Kazooie started life on the N64 back in 1998. The game is an action-adventure hybrid, or "cartoon platform romp" if you believe Kristan. "Fairly by the numbers; it's good, it's solid, but has been superseded by the Ratchet & Clanks and Marios," he continued, while writing a big list on a whiteboard. "It's got a lot to do to catch up."
Banjo-Kazooie 3 is due out on Xbox 360 this "holiday", according to recent comments Microsoft Game Studios boss Shane Kim.

Given recent marketplace advances made by rival Blu-ray in the format war, the word on the street is that Toshiba could be about to surrender and give up on HD DVD.
Reliable industry sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that it could happen in weeks.
Officially, Toshiba spokesperson Jodi Sally told the trade newspaper that they're still believers in the technology, but seemed to hint that a change is coming.
"Given the market developments in the past month," Sally said, "Toshiba will continue to study the market impact and the value proposition for consumers, particularly in light of our recent price reductions on all HD DVD players."
Sources tell THR that Toshiba's price cuts could be costing them some serious jack -- as much as several hundred dollars for each player sold. And unfortunately for the tech manufacturer, the sales jump they'd hoped for never materialized. That, coupled with the big-name retail defections of late, has reportedly convinced the company to prepare for defeat.
It seems like just a matter of time. We'll keep tracking the format war, and bring you news as it breaks!

Last summer aspiring rock stars received Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s to tide them over until GHIII was out. Today Activision announced the next evolution in its rock-simulation franchise -- Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. Focusing on the music of the iconic American band, players will pick up the picks of Joe Perry (guitar), Brad Whitford (guitar) and Tom Hamilton (bass). We'll also get a chance to play songs that influenced the band. The game will take heroes through Aerosmith's career, from their first gig to writing cheesy ballads for blockbuster movies (we kid).
"We've put a lot of ideas into the game so that fans can have fun interacting with our music, getting inside our body of work and learning about the band's history," says Perry. "On a larger scale, it's cool for us to be pioneers helping to rebuild the music industry through a format like videogames. It's great for rock since the record companies are struggling to make sense of how things are changing. Fans want to get and experience music in new formats -- and there are going to be some of them who will play the game, then pick up the guitar for real and start bands. It's what's happening now, and it's only going to build more momentum in the future. It's a massive change for the music business."

Codies sends word that three new download packs for Pikmin-meets-Dungeon-Keeper adventure Overlord are now on Xbox Live (and one of them is free).
The biggest of the three is Raising Hell, a single-player expansion previously released on PC, which includes new Abyss levels and Dungeon Challenges. That one's a whopping 800 points (about £6.50).
Also on the release list is the Challenge Pack, which hands over seven new multiplayer maps and a 'Legendary' single-player difficulty mode. That one's up for 400 Microsoft points (about three quid).
The third and final DLC pack is the Split-screen Multiplayer Pack, downloadable for free and adds... erm... nope, we've forgotten. But that's the one we'll be getting.
In case you've wondered here by accident and are still curious, here's the Overlord review from last year.

Today news has come out of dvdtown that Warner has not ruled out abandoning HD DVD completely. The report states that Warner will still produce and restock HD DVD movies if demand calls for it. This means big titles like Dark Knight, 10 000BC, etc will probably see HD DVD releases! Great news for us HD DVD fans, its not full on support like before, but you have to take what you get.

I've always been a fan of buying used video games and used video game systems. Since most games are only published and printed for a limited amount of time and each video game hardware system is only made in a limited amount for a limited period of time getting buying used stuff is often the only way to find anything older than a few years. However there is no way that I would ever buy a used Xbox 360.
Customers simply have no way of knowing what that system has been through and the state of the internal hardware. Since the Xbox 360 has design issues, parts supply, manufacturing and hardware repair problems there is no way that you can rely on getting a reliable system. Unless you know how an Xbox 360 system has been treated, used of if it's had any previous hardware problems. There is no way of knowing if it's been repaired once or a dozen times. Buying it from GameStop,Game Crazy, Ebay, Craig's List it is all the same. Places like GameStop will only test to see if an Xbox will boot up once or twice while they are deciding to accept it but they have no idea how reliable it is going to be in the long term. Getting a "repaired" system back from Microsoft is almost just as bad from getting one from a used lot. I would never ever buy a used Xbox 360 system and I think that places that sell used Xbox 360s are not being responsible to their customers.
