Netflix has announced that it will be phasing out HD-DVD movies in favour of Sony's Blu-ray format, stating that the movie industry has already chosen a winner in the battle of hi-definition formats.
Movies on HD-DVD, developed by Toshiba, will be dropped from the online rental service by the end of the year, with the company stating the format war has been damaging to consumers.
"The prolonged period of competition between two formats has prevented clear communication to the consumer regarding the richness of the high-def experience versus standard definition," commented chief content officer Ted Sarandos.
"We're now at the point where the industry can pursue the migration to a single format, bring clarity to the consumer and accelerate the adoption of high-def.
"Going forward, we expect that all of the studios will publish in the Blu-ray format and that the price points of high-def DVD players will come down significantly. These factors could well lead to another decade of disc-based movie watching as the consumer's preferred means," he said.

"I hope Fable 2 is going to be really beautiful and that it will be considered the best-looking game," Kim told MTV during a recent chat at the DICE gaming summit. He also mentioned that Banjo will be a "big hit for us this holiday"...
Remember when Peter Molyneux held his hands up and said that he just might have been guilty of over-hyping some of the features in the original Fable? Following the game's release on Xbox back in 2004 he said, "What happens is that we strive to include absolutely everything we've ever dreamt of and, in my enthusiasm, I talk about it to anyone who'll listen, mainly in press interviews. When I tell people about what we're planning, I'm telling the truth, and people, of course, expect to see all the features I've mentioned."
Four years later and all that's still stuck in the mind of Microsoft, who makes it sound like Molyneux's not being allowed to talk during lesson time. "I'm trying to do [lead creator Peter [Molyneux]'s job a little bit, because Peter was accused of over-hyping Fable 1. And so we've been keeping Peter really focused. I obviously believe it's going to be a huge title," Kim said.
Molyneux will be talking (up) Fable 2 at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco this week. Stay tuned for more on that.
Hit the link above and look out for Kim slipping into the conversation that the long-awaited Banjo-Kazooie game will be a big hit for 360 "this holiday".
November release anyone? That'll do us nicely!

Microsoft sends word that the next Xbox Live Arcade release (the one coming out this Wednesday) will be Discs of Tron.
The second of Disney's Tron games (the other one was released last year) sees players face off in a three-dimensional arena against the film's villain, Sark, as they throw discs to try to knock him off a platform. It's more fun than it sounds, promise.
The XBLA version includes both classic and enhanced modes (with a HD city slapped on the side of the screen) and yes, there are achievements and Xbox Live leaderboards as well.
No pricing details as yet, but the earlier Tron game went for 400 Microsoft points (about three quid). Lower your expectations, then check out the screens and movies on this page.

Microsoft is confident that 360 will continue to have growing sales numbers throughout 2008, despite a global economic slump and the touting of 2008 belonging to PS3.
So says Alan Bowman, general manager of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division for Asia Pacific and Greater China - the part of the company you rarely hear about.
Bowman points towards the growing demand for HD TVs as a key benefactor for 360s this year. "If people are going to buy HD TVs, they're going to want to put content through that," he said.
He added that, despite being second to Wii in total console sales (17.5 million sales to Wii's 20 million), 360 leads in revenue.
He stated that, in the US market alone, 360 revenue, including accessories, is 2.5 times that of Nintendo's Wii, and 3.5 times that of PS3, which has sold around 10.5 million to date.
"It's not just about the actual number of consoles," Bowman told Dow Jones (via Morning Star).
He declined, however, to disclose how many console the company expects to sell throughout the year.

PopCap boss Greg Canessa has said "online functionality" will play a major role in the Live Arcade version of Peggle when it is released in Q2 2008.
He was talking to Evil Avatar in an interview arranged by Microsoft's Gamerscore blog, but was coy about letting too many details spill.
"We are working on online functionality for Peggle; it's a very important part of the design," said Canessa, avoiding specifics. "There are multiplayer modes - online and local - for a varied number of players."
Peggle is a cross between Pachinko and Puzzle Bobble, and has proved wildly popular on this here Internet; we gave it 9/10 and liked it so much it finished as our 12th favourite game of 2007.
PopCap recently raised our hopes with promises of a DS version of the puzzler, but Canessa put an end to those rumours by saying Nintendo had not approved it and perhaps some reports had jumped the gun.
"We have ambitious plans for many of our titles including Peggle, and are eager to bring its peg-popping pleasures to as many appropriate platforms and devices as possible," said Greg Canessa in a statement.
"But Nintendo has not approved this product, we have not signed a developer to port Peggle to DS, and we have not green lighted this project."

Here's the Major's official blurb:

The poor, poor child. This boy's EVIL PARENTS gave him an Xbox 360 for Christmas. Only, on the day, they took the console out of the box and replaced it with clothes - as punishment for him sneaking a look at his presents before Christmas.
They then took things a little bit too far. It's funny for the first few seconds, then you start willing them to tell him it's OK. But they don't.
See psychological scars and a hatred of humanity form before your very eyes! The comments on YouTube are not for the weak of heart, either. Devastating, emotional viewing. Sadly, it was uploaded too late to make this year's BAFTA nominations.

As it turns out, Microsoft may be breaking a few hearts by not being able to fulfill all its Zune 80 Valentine's Day Originals shipments, but not all is lost for their loving customers. Users who haven't already gotten their units will apparently get a full refund -- as well the player they ordered. Aw, isn't that candy-heart sweet? And should you wind up with one of these for V-Day, you might try every so gingerly asking for dinner with that $250 your special someone saved.

In a one-on-one interview between Microsoft Game Studios VP Kim and New York Times reporter Seth Schiesel during the DICE Summit in Las Vegas, Schiesel pointed out how Xbox 360's 2008 software lineup pales in comparison to a year that saw BioShock, Mass Effect, Halo 3, The Orange Box and other heavy hitters.
The 2008 games lineup just doesn't seem as "stacked" as last year, Schiesel said.
"I think the pipeline is very stacked. You just don't know about it," Kim laughed coyly.
But at a glance, it would seem that Microsoft's exclusive library has taken a potential hit. Last year, Activision acquired Bizarre Creations, developer of Project Gotham Racing.
There's also the Electronic Arts acquisition of BioWare, which developed the Xbox 360 exclusive Mass Effect, leaving that franchise's exclusivity in question.
And of course there was the much-publicized split between Microsoft and Halo developer Bungie.
Is Microsoft losing control of its gaming library?
"It is a very fluid industry," said Shane. "...When these things happen in rapid succession, we can't control the actions of other publishers."
"I'd say that the generation still has a long way to go. It's way too early to declare a winner here. We still have tremendous momentum here," said Kim.

Discs of Tron, the second arcade game inspired by the classic '80s sci-fi flick, is coming to XBLA on February 13. Priced at a modest 400 Microsoft Points (US$5), Discs of Tron takes the fan-fave arcade hit, ands spiffy new backgrounds, upgraded audio and online multiplayer modes.
For readers born in the '90s, Tron was a Disney movie old folks geeked out to. It starred Jeff Bridges as an arcade genius who gets sucked into a computer program where he meets Bruce "Scarecrow & Mrs. King" Boxleitner, a rebel out to bring down the Master Control Program.
"Discs of Tron is considered an arcade classic as it mesmerized fans who wanted an entertaining and challenging experience derived from the innovative film," said Craig Relyea, senior vice president of global marketing, Disney Interactive Studios. "The game's release on Xbox Live Arcade enables multiple generations to play the addictive game in both its original form from 25 years ago and an enhanced mode with upgraded graphics and sound."
In Discs of Tron, players square off against the evil Sark with a Frisbee-like discs in hand. Throwing the disc off walls while jumping across precarious platforms in an attempt to "derezz" Sark.
You can also take DoT online for two-player co-op, VS matches, VS Speed Mode and VS Deadly Disc.
End of line.
