Well, here we go again. Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg, talking to slightly-interest party Major Nelson, says he's never seen such a "tremendous shift" in developer loyalty, and he means from Sony and to Microsoft. Guess we couldn't expect him to keep from smack talking after the Tekken 6 news earlier this week.
"We've come a long way... Square Enix's biggest RPG franchises, Namco Bandai bringing their top titles including Tekken 6. A lot of great arcade titles that the Japanese publishers continue to really recreate for this whole new generation, and we're finally at a price the world can afford."

For the first two and a half years of the Xbox 360's lifespan, owners eagerly looked forward to regular "spring" and "fall" updates, packing more functionality into their consoles through (what Microsoft marketing would later call) the "magic of software." With the absence of a spring update this year and the subsequent announcement of the New Xbox Experience we wanted to know if Microsoft would return to the biannual updates ...
So we asked John Schappert during our sitdown earlier this week in Tokyo. He said, "I don't know if we're going to tie ourselves to a spring fall release schedule" and continued, "I like staying focused on bigger, more impactful releases ... maybe it'll be twice a year, maybe less frequently, to-be-determined." Speaking of what those future updates could consist of, Schappert said that Microsoft is asking itself, "What's the next big launch? What do we bring? When can we bring it? And how can we do it in a big way?"
The NXE is certainly a bigger, more impactful release. We're assuming, however, that Microsoft doesn't plan on reinventing the wheel every couple years in which case what "big" functionality should we expect in future Dashboard updates, regardless of when they're released? No, really, we're asking you.

You know who Microsoft hates? No, not Apple. It really hates DHL. Apparently, the delivery service has hit the folks in Redmond where it hurts: in the Xbox. It seems that 21,600 consoles were totally messed over by "impact damage, wetting, pilfering and shortage" when one of the company's freight trains derailed en route to Long Beach, California. The big M claims that DHL refuses to compensate for the lost goods, and has filed a complaint at a US District Court in Seattle, calling for $2 million in damages and stating that the shipper "negligently breached its duties as a common carrier, handler, bailee, warehouseman, agent, or in other capabilities." Harsh words, but really, who's to blame for this mess? Next time we suggest going with G.O.D.

After Microsoft launched the Xbox, they didn't have any intention of releasing an Xbox Lite or Xbox Slim. Instead, they went straight for the next generation with the 360. Meanwhile, one modder, caught in retro Xbox fandom, had to create a fantastic Xbox Slim of his own. Reduced by almost 2 inches in length, width and height, the Xbox Slim has a total reduction in volume of around 60%. But that's just the start of it.

Besides just looking a lot snazzier, the New Xbox Experience uses a whole new foundation that's server-based rather than sitting on your hard drive, so it's easy for Microsoft to add on features and apps. One possibility is basically movie parties—you and your friends could all watch Indiana Jones on Netflix at the same time—or more likely, photo sharing.
All Microsoft has to do is "build that app, drop it in, party enable it and we’re good to go" says Xbox senior strategist Rob Gruhl. So while the movie party feature isn't specifically planned on, since "those types of things are certainly the aspiration," according to Xbox marketing head Albert Penello and they've discussed photo sharing, it looks like we can definitely expect to see some social app action like that in the future.

Microsoft has denied that an external Blu-ray drive for Xbox 360 is in the works.
"As we've said before, Microsoft has no plans to introduce an Xbox 360 Blu-ray add-on. Games are what drive consumers to purchase game consoles, and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available," Microsoft told Edge Online in a thinly veiled swipe at the competition (presumably having temporarily forgotten about its price cuts, Avatars, movie downloads, music festivals, theme packs and all the other things it does which aren't games).
Reports surfaced earlier this week claiming Microsoft had already commissioned the manufacture of the hardware with Toshiba-Samsung. The rumoured price was to be between USD 100 and USD 150.
But speculation of internal or external Blu-ray drives for Xbox 360 has been rife since the death of the HD-DVD format earlier this year. And Microsoft has consistently swatted them down, maintaining that digital distribution will be the real future.

Sony's president of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, has said that he wants Microsoft's Xbox 360 to succeed in Japan in order to help push the concepts of high-definition gaming to local consumers.
With Nintendo's Wii the most popular console in the Japanese market, Yoshida would like both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 to sell well in order to convince punters of a more sophisticated take on next-generation gaming.
"I like to see people here in Japan showing interest in high-definition gaming and more sophisticated gaming experiences," offered Yoshida, in an interview with our sister site Eurogamer.net.
"In terms of realistic-looking graphics and smarter AI, they haven't really shown the appetite for what this generation of gaming can offer. I'd really like to see both PS3 and 360 succeed here."
"What Microsoft is offering and what we are offering are closer, compared to what other platforms are offering. Because of that commonality, the new games coming out on 360 and PS3 help to get consumers more interested in this generation of gaming," he added.
Both consoles are currently being trounced in Japan by Nintendo's Wii. And although the Xbox 360 has been outselling PS3 in recent weeks, Yoshida sees the success as short-lived.
"Quite honestly, the real number being sold - we haven't seen real acceptance of the platform here in the Japanese market. The Nintendo Wii is still by far the biggest platform in Japan," he said.
And still on the subject of Microsoft, Yoshida admitted he's impressed with the New Xbox Experience, prefering the style of the avatars over Nintendo's Miis.
"I think it's quite nice. I like the avatar designs they're working on. Personally, Microsoft's work is closer to my personal preference. The Miis are very nice, but everybody looks cute, like Japanese-style characters," he said.
The full interview with Shuhei Yoshida, where he discusses the release of Home, forthcoming PS3 titles and the success of PSP, can be read here.

We've got 16 screenshots of Far Cry 2, fresh out of Ubisoft from the Tokyo Game Show.
PC Gamer gave Ubisoft's Far Cry 2 a 9.4/10, while the game grabbed a thumbs-up from both the Official PlayStation Magazine and the Xbox 360 Official Magazine, scoring 9/10 in both publications.
All the more reason to drool longingly at these latest screens then ahead of the game's release in just under two weeks.

The latest instalment in Square Enix's Star Ocean series, The Last Hope, will be released on Xbox 360 in Europe next year, the company has confirmed.
The new instalment - the first to release on an Xbox platform - is actually a prequel set in the aftermath of World War III, as humanity voyages into the stars in search of a new home world.
It's being developed by Tri-Ace and promises to bring Star Ocean's real-time battle system bang up to date. Stat fans are going to love this.
"STAR OCEAN has already proved to be a popular series in Japan, we now hope that players around the world can discover why," Square Enix president John Yamamoto said at the Tokyo Game Show.
Last Hope will be fully localised for PAL territories with French, German, Spanish and Italian subtitles, says SE.

Code of Bethesda's highly-anticipated follow-up to Oblivion, Fallout 3, has already been leaked onto the internet and is available on various torrent sites.
The official game isn't due for release until October 28 in the US and October 31 in Europe, but the Xbox 360 version of the game has been hacked and at the time of writing had well over 2000 people downloading the 6.52GB file on one site alone.
The hacked version of the game would only be playable on an illegally modified Xbox 360.
Although a majority of console and PC games are leaked online before the official release, for a game to be distributed illegally three weeks before it hits the shops highlights the demand for pirated material from users - and the holes in security measures designed to prevent illegal copying of games.

I got in touch with Microsoft to ask about the Blu Ray add on rumours from yesterday, here’s what they had to say:

Microsoft has fired yet another salvo in the battle for casual cred, including free, family-friendly titles with every Xbox 360 purchased this holiday season. Beginning some time this month, those who purchase the $199 "Arcade Holiday Bundle" will get SEGA Superstars Tennis and five unidentified XBLA games. Or, pick up the the Xbox 360 ($299) or Xbox 360 Elite ($399) Holiday Bundles and get LEGO Indiana Jones and Kung Fu Panda gratis.
Third party publishers get to empty out their warehouses and the 360 looks even more adorable to soccer moms and your grandma. Everybody wins!

It's no surprise that The New Xbox Experience will squeeze within a memory card—Microsoft wants to make the software upgrade fit on removable flash storage for Xbox 360 Arcade users who lack hard drives. But the company has made it clear that Arcade users looking to upgrade will need a 256MB storage card, not the smaller 64MB model. So in other words, not every user will find themselves able to make the upgrade free. But this sort of situation is exactly why you shouldn't buy a 360 without a hard drive.

A few months back, Microsoft stirred the downloadable gaming waters by letting it slip that it was thinking about "de-listing" some under-performing Xbox Live Arcade titles. Essentially, games meeting certain criteria (sluggish sales, poor ratings, etc.) could potentially be removed from the service's browsable index over time.
In an interview at the Tokyo Game Show in Japan this week, Microsoft corporate vice president John Schappert backed away from that perception a bit, saying the information about XBLA de-listing had been taken out of context and that there was no plan to do any such thing.
Instead, Schappert said, Microsoft has simply "set parameters by which we can delist" games and is not moving forward with any particular plan to limit the number of Xbox Live Arcade titles that gamers can browse through and buy on XBLA.
Schappert said Microsoft has no interest in actually de-listing titles unless the amount of content becomes "cumbersome" on Xbox Live.
"We have no immediate plans to act on de-listing," he said.
In fact, Schappert suggested that the pending release of the Xbox Live Dashboard overhaul would make de-listing titles unnecessary, as the improvements to the service include better sorting options that should make wading through XBLA title data easier and more intuitive.
When asked if a text-based search function will be built into the Dashboard in the future, Schappert stopped short of confirming it was in the works, but he noted that Microsoft is continuing to look at the option and said the company has "plans well into next year" for expanding on the new Dashboard.

As if there weren't enough oddball announcements this morning, Microsoft's gone and unveiled a sequel to its disappointing 2006 hack 'n slasher, Ninety Nine Nights 2.
The follow-up's being developed by Lost Odyssey co-developer Feelplus, and once again overseen by Q Entertainment and game designer Tetsuya Mizuguchi. The original was created by Phantagram.
More polished combat was promised at Microsoft's keynote at the Tokyo Game Show this morning, but other than that we don't really know much about it.
From the artwork Microsoft's released this morning it's looking a lot darker than the first game. We can only hope it's a lot more playable as well.

John Schappert, the man in charge of Xbox Live, has admitted he's no idea when we'll see the downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto IV.
Last we heard, the DLC - which is exclusive to Xbox 360 - was down to be released "this autumn".
But, well, it's October now. So during a roundtable interview at the Tokyo Game Show, we asked Schappert whether we will indeed see the content this side of Christmas.
"Frankly, I don't know," said the Xbox Live boss. "Rockstar are the people to ask for that."
He went on to add, "I hope as a gamer, just like I'm sure you do as a gamer, the sooner the better. I can't wait for it." Even though, Schappert confirmed, he hasn't had the chance to give it a play as yet.
The corporate vice president of Live software and studios, entertainment and devices division, to give him his full title, delivered a keynote speech at the Tokyo Game Show earlier today. You can read our live text report for the full lowdown, and there's much more from Schappert in the full interview.

There's just over a month until Nuts & Bolts releases on November 14, and here's another sneak peak at how much has changed in the eight years since Banjo-Tooie on N64.
The new video shows another of Nuts & Bolts' worlds, the Terrorium. It looks spooky.
Can Rare still wow us like it did with those standout N64 moments, exploring Treasure Trove Cove in the air and stomping around Mayan temples as a giant gold statue? We're very looking forward to finding out soon.
Once you're done with the new video and screens, check out our recent hands on impressions with the first 30 minutes of the game and our chat with Rare.

Microsoft has revealed more sales data during its keynote speech at Tokyo Game Show, revealing that sales of the Xbox 360 system have jumped 62 per cent since the latest round of price cuts.
All three 360 SKUs – Arcade, Premium and Elite – were reduced in price last month, with the Arcade console now the cheapest current gen hardware on the market.
According to John Schappert, corporate vice president of software and services for Xbox, sales of the system in Japan have increased five-fold year-on-year.
He added that sales of software created by Japanese developers for the console were up 60 per cent accounting for USD 811 million, and the company expects that number to grow to USD 1 billion by the end of the year.
"By the end of this holiday, we estimated total worldwide sales of Japanese games will top USD 1 billion on Xbox 360," he told the audience in Tokyo.
