Call us paranoid, but we got all nervous when MS put out an XBLA update announcement yesterday that only spoke of War World's arrival, making no mention of Mega Man 9.
It turns out MS had decided to break the trend of listing every XBLA game for the week in a single press release, because Mega Man 9 is coming today, as MS has now confirmed.
It costs 800 MS Points (which is around £6.60), and is so hard it'll hurt like a hammer to the nuts. But you want it anyway. Fact.

New Xbox 360 models have been spotted using upgraded components, said to make the infamous Red Ring of Death a thing of the past.
The newest 360s are fitted with new 'Jasper' motherboards, says a report on Joey Gadget, as well as a new and improved graphics chip.
The upgraded components are smaller and emit less heat, according to the techies, which in turn should mean no more red lights on your 360, and less postman visits to send your console off to Xbox repairs.
To be honest, we've not experienced or heard of anywhere near as many RRoD incidents over the last year anyway (apart from our launch office 360 which died last week and is now being used as a prop to raise Gav's monitor).
The problem behind the infamous 360 hardware failures, which cost Microsoft $1 billion in warranty extensions, has never been officially disclosed.
According to Gartner analyst Bryan Lewis though, the defect was down to Microsoft's decision to manufacture the 360's graphic chip itself, rather than paying a third party.
If you're keen to find one of the new 'Jasper' 360s, you should look for a manufacturing date as early as June 8, 2008, 'Lot 8031' and up, and 'Team CSON' on the back of the console - though you'll probably have to bribe the bloke behind the counter to see it.

Those hoping to Command and Conquer from a more personal perspective are sure to be disappointed with the demise of EA's upcoming first-person shooter, Tiberium. According to a report on Kotaku (we've verified with EA), development on the game was suspended due to its inability to meet "the high quality standards set by the team and by the EA Games Label" before its post-delay fiscal 2010 release.
According to EA's Mike Verdu, "The game had fundamental design challenges from the start. We fought to correct the issues, but we were not successful; the game just isn't coming together well enough to meet our own quality expectations as well as those of our consumers."
Though we're glad to be spared from any game that effortlessly slides beneath EA's recently raised Limbo pole, Tiberium's cancellation will reportedly result in several members of the development team being "released." The publisher claims that it "will make every effort" to move "talented people" to other, actually-coming-out projects.

Lionhead CEO Peter Molyneux is saying that Fable 2's online co-op could be available on launch day. Microsoft's Gamerscore Blog announced over the weekend that the feature would not be available at launch, but should be auto-patched in later, hopefully within a week.
Speaking at a video game festival in Paris yesterday, Molyneux allegedly said that Fable 2 would include online co-op at launch, though clarified today that he could not confirm the timing, saying the team had an "ambition" for a day one patch. Having that wiggle room of a week would probably be best for Lionhead, but we're happy to take the online patch at launch too.

Another magazine has backed up reports that the inevitable third instalment in constipated shooter series, Max Payne, is in development internally at Rockstar.
The latest Xbox World 360 echoes this US mag report, which claims that the shooter has been moved away from original Finnish developer Remedy (which is currently asleep on the job with Alan Wake) and handed to Rockstar Toronto, the studio responsible for The Warriors.
Some fans will take it as bad news that the original daddy isn't at the helm, but with the current Wake situation we reckon they should be glad it's coming at all.
"While Rockstar aren't patently going to be able to bang the game out in time to coincide with Marky Mark Wahlberg's forthcoming cinematic portrayal of New York's most tragic cop, we're guessing they're at least going to ride in on the back of it," says XBW.
The rumour's looking more and more likely to be true then - and with a film coming out, why wouldn't Rockstar pump out a new one? We would.
Take-Two previously confirmed the third game in a conference call back in 2004, stating that "there will be another Max Payne". Though obviously not much has happened since then...

Microsoft has finished maintenance work on Xbox Live.
The downtime lasted slightly longer than planned as foundations were laid for the upcoming dashboard revamp, which looks likely to happen in November.
This also hails the arrival of the Mii-style "Avatars" that will liven up Gamercards and soften the hardcore image of the console.
Part of this will be subtly-animated themes and Friends lists, which were explained in more detail yesterday. With pictures.

Microsoft has said that sales of the Xbox 360 have doubled in the past two weeks, outselling Sony's PlayStation 3 by two-to-one.
According to Chart Track figures, sales were up 214 per cent in the past two weeks, in the wake of a price cut across the European region.
"This data shows that the Xbox 360 trajectory continues upwards, and not just in the UK," said Chris Lewis, VP of Xbox in Europe.
"We've seen uplift in all countries in Europe and are confident that even at this rate of growth we can keep retail satisfied with a steady supply of consoles throughout the Christmas season."
Although Microsoft's claims are backed by Chart Track's data, the company stopped short of detailing exact unit sales for the period.
"Our commitment to continuously improving and innovating new content, our new high-profile marketing campaign and the fact that we’re now the best-value next-gen console on the market with an entry-level ERP of GBP 129.99 combine to make Xbox 360 the right blend of gaming and wider experiences at the right price to offer unparalleled entertainment for everyone. And these figures prove it," added Lewis.
Microsoft is continuing its aggressive PR and marketing campaign in the run up to Christmas. Last week it began airing a new series ads in a bid to open the console up to a wider audience.
Two week's ago, Microsoft reduced the price of the Arcade Xbox 360 to GBP 129.99, the Premium unit to GBP 169.99 and the Xbox 360 Elite GBP 229.99.
The company has sold over six million units in Europe, and new figures today reveal that 2.3 million of those are in the UK alone.

Gears of War lead designer Cliff Bleszinski has no plans to emulate Silicon Knights boss Denis Dyack and tackle his critics in "Internet flame wars", insisting: "If you do a good enough job, your fans will come to your aid and defend you."
The artist formerly known as CliffyB, who was speaking to Eurogamer TV in London ahead of the release of Gears of War 2, argued that it was futile to engage with dissenters on forums, because "whenever something becomes large or successful then there's always a certain percentage of backlash where it becomes cool to hate what's universally accepted as something that's stellar or very interesting."
Dyack infamously launched an attack against critics of Too Human via a post on NeoGAF, urging anonymous hecklers to "stand up and be counted", while defending the quality of his game.
But Bleszinski, who has been cultivated as the high-profile frontman for the Gears of War franchise, believes criticism comes with the territory. "You have to have thick skin to be in this business and be some sort of public figure," he explained. "I think one needs to be very careful when dealing with those kinds of criticisms on the Internet, because you're never going to fully get rid of it."
With specific reference to you, dear reader, he added: "Eurogamer commenters aren't huge fans of me; it's highly amusing to read. I believe I've been called a wanker numerous times. You can't take it to heart, man. The Internet sometimes facilitates dickishness; I don't know why that is, but it is. You can call me whatever the hell you want as long as you play Gears of War 2 and give it a fair shake."
The original Gears of War, you may recall, received an eight out of ten in its Eurogamer review. Confident in the quality of his sequel, Bleszinski expects better this time. "I'm hoping it'll get a nine or a ten or I'm going to find you and kick you in the bollocks. One ball at a time." Ouch.
Gears of War 2 releases exclusively on Xbox 360 on 7th November. You can see more from our exclusive interview with Bleszinski over on Eurogamer TV. Be sure to check out our Gears of War 2 hands-on preview for a playthrough of the first act and some thoughts on multiplayer. too.

The Capcom blog has announced that the horrifically under-promoted Age of Booty sets sail on October 15 and 16 for XBLA and PSN, respectively. The PC version will be available "shortly after" on digital download services like Metaboli, Impulse and Steam. The game will be sold on all platforms for $10.
We've had a few positive hands-on experiences with developer Certain Affinity's AoB, going back to when it was known by the less risqué name, Plunder. Hopefully this multiplayer-focused, real-time, boardgame-esque downloadable title finds an audience in the madness of this packed holiday season.

MTV and Harmonix will be adding the Red Hot Chili Pepper's 1991 album Blood Sugar Sex Magik to Rock Band 2.
Xbox 360 owners will be able to download the songs tomorrow for 1600 Points (GBP 13.60 / EUR 19.20 ), while PS3 fans will have to wait until Thursday. Those with the game on PS2 and Wii will get the songs eventually on a retail disc.
Blood Sugar Sex Magik was the album responsible for rocketing the Chilis to worldwide fame, and includes hits "Under the Bridge" and "Breaking the Girl". "Give it Away" is another, but was already included in Rock Band 2, so will not be available to download.

Lionhead and daddy Microsoft have announced that Fable 2 will ship without online co-operative play.
"We just got word that while we will be able to play the single-player and local co-op on day one, they are still making tweaks to the online co-op," Microsoft said on Gamerscoreblog.
"Seriously, as a gamer I'm glad they're taking the time to make it right instead of just rushing it out the door," the poster added. (We're not touching this with a bargepole.)
Fortunately, the patch that introduces online co-op will be released "within the first week of launch in North America" by the current estimate, so it may even be ready for the European launch. They're getting it on 21st October, we're getting it on 24th October.
Fable 2's online co-op will allow players to drop in and out of each other's games, draw up loot-sharing contracts and have a permanent effect on the worlds they visit - unless a safety feature is turned on.
In order to locate other players for co-op, Fable 2 single-player will include floaty orbs, which represent the position and progress of other players - and Gamerscoreblog noted that this feature will be present even before online co-op is enabled.
"As you are playing through the game, you will still be able to see your friends as glowing orbs as well as chat and trade with them," it said.
You can read much more about that in our extensive Fable 2 hands-on preview, where Lionhead's Peter Molyneux walks us through the orbs feature.
Look out for our review of Fable 2 closer to its 24th October release.

Microsoft has announced that it saw a 58 per cent increase in unique members purchasing titles on Xbox Live Arcade during its five-week Summer of Arcade program.
The period saw a number of high profile titles released on the downloadable service, including Castle Crashers, Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2, Bionic Commando: Rearmed and Braid. Microsoft further announced that August broke the monthly revenue high by 67 per cent.
"At E3, we committed to re-focusing the Xbox Live Arcade business, vowing to release bigger and better games while focusing on quality and not quantity," said Marc Whitten, general manager of Xbox Live.
"The debut of the new strategy proved to be a huge success, with the Summer of Arcade making August the highest grossing month to date. But the focus on quality games doesn't stop with the Summer of Arcade. We have plenty more great titles coming out in the next few months and beyond that we think will continue to fuel this incredible momentum."

We've received numerous tips (and noticed a rather popular digg) about an Xbox 360 event in Dehli, India that "confirmed" a slim Xbox 360 console was to be announced in December for release sometime in 2009. The information emanates from two English-language Indian gaming blogs, Split-Screen and Game Guru (a WHOIS search on both sites revealed nothing noteworthy).
Both blogs also mention that the region will be getting hands-on time with Fable 2, Gears of War 2 and Fallout 3 a week earlier than anyone else (we're guessing some special event, but neither article specifies) and a new 20GB package with Viva Piñata and Forza 2 for Rs.14,990 (approx. US $350).
While a slim Xbox 360 seems like a no-brainer for the future (we know there are smaller chipsets being made), here's why we're skeptical about this: logic dictates that Microsoft would not announce it in December, given that such news would likely hurt sales during the holiday season. Furthermore, no utterance of such an event can be found on Xbox India's official forums or major India newspaper the Times of India.
A final drop of skepticism can be added from Major Nelson himself, who told X3F, "I have no knowledge of an event in India and therefore anything related to one. I think we all know that if we had something to say, we'd be saying it." A similar rumor showed up in May, which Microsoft then denied.
Update: Microsoft India has shot down this alleged "announcement," labeling it as no more than "market rumor or speculation."
