The beta for Call of Duty: World At War is under way. And the good news is that if you loved COD4 multiplayer, then this will put you right back in that same comfort zone. It's every bit the same as Modern Combat only in a new setting with some new equipment and options to master.
There are a selection of new perks (even vehicle perks), weapons and maps to be devoured so let's get right to it. Below you'll find movies and first impressions. If you're not on the beta, let us assure you that it's all good and not as World War II-y as we first feared. We had to drag ourselves away from ranking up to bring you these words, so make sure you read them eh?

Rare may be hard at work on a third Killer Instinct fighting game.
Rumours were fuelled by the arrival of three Viva Piñata animal cards based on characters from Killer Instinct - these are free and need simply to be scanned by a Live Vision camera to appear in-game.
The significance lies in Rare having teased the past two Killer Instinct instalments in other games: the first in Donkey Kong Country 2, and the second in Diddy Kong Racing.
This rumour joins mounting evidence almost purposely leaked by the developer itself in recent months - a bit like leaving the door open at naughty time.
Killer Instinct was a brutal fighting game with swanky graphics that appeared on arcades in 1994. It was later ported to SNES and GameBoy.
One of the main attractions was stringing together enormous combos sometimes made up of over 80 hits. There were finishing moves, too.

Xbox Live boss John Schappert has said he would love to see Metal Gear Solid 4 on 360, and that the console certainly has power enough to handle the beefy game.
"I'm certainly in the fan club that would love to see Kojima-san's masterpiece come our way. It would be wonderful to play Metal Gear Solid on the Xbox. It could become another of the many franchises that started their life on another console that are now coming our way," Schappert told MCV.
"I can't speak on behalf of Konami, but I can shed more light on the fact that we definitely have the power to run MGS4.
"There are a lot of recent examples that are in true high-def on our platform and aren't on PS3. We've got an amazing amount of horsepower and graphics power," he added.
His comments further grind the rumour mill set into action by Japanese Konami PR Yoshitaka Arai, who told a regional publication yesterday that "worldwide demand" for MGS4 on Xbox 360 was "quite high", and something the company was "looking into".
Kojima told us in August he was fed up of people asking for MGS4 on Xbox 360, but then he's trying to move away from the series and leave future instalments to a younger team, anyway.
The Metal Gear Solid creator is expected to unveil a brand new game at the Tokyo Game Show in 2009, too.
What's all the fuss about? Metal Gear Solid 4 only got 8/10. Look at all those worms!

This Powerbook modification is actually a spin-off of another project. Let me explain, my other project (Twenty First Century Mac) was originally based upon a 867Mhz PowerBook G4 Logic board. Unfortunately, the 867 is too slow for active TV Tuners (specifically, the one I already purchased.) so I had to scratch the 867Mhz from the project. Since I didn't have any true use for it, it sat idle. (with 1.12GB of RAM, Combo Drive, etc. To go with it.)
I'm an avid broken Xbox 360 collector, trying to develop strategies for hacking and repairing once-thought dead consoles. I've got plenty of empty 360 cases around with nothing to do but gather dust. When it hit me, The PowerBook logic boards are tiny. Perfect for one of those cases. Even better with PSU integration.
I had plenty of left-over PowerBook parts to make a decent machine. With a nice small footprint.
Specs
* 867Mhz PowerBook G4
* 60GB Fujitsu HD (Former test drive. ☺)
* Functional Ring Of Light, including sleep indication
* Combo Drive
* Built In Battery
* Stealth Power Button
* 65W Power Supply
* OS X Tiger 10.4.11

The Zune has a long way to go to become a threat to the iPod. But it is getting closer...and it became clear that there are a few things Apple can learn from the Zune...I found the Zune's Marketplace feature easy and definitely satisfying...Mixview is miles above the Genius feature...clearly Microsoft is making strides - and maybe making consumers think twice before running out to buy a new iPod.

Piper Jaffray's bi-annual teen survey includes some positive news for Microsoft's Zune music player. Yes, the survey says that Apple's share of the portable media player (PMP) market among high school students increased to 84 percent, up from 80 percent a year ago. And, yes, a whopping 79 percent of teens who said they planned to buy a music player in the next 12 months said they expected to buy an iPod, up from 78 percent a year ago. But the Zune's share of the teen market is up as well -- to 3 percent, from 2 percent a year ago. Moreover, 15 percent of teens surveyed who said they planned on buying a music player over the next year said they expected to buy a Zune, up from 13 percent a year ago

The XBLA version of Portal - Portal: Still Alive - will be with us soon. In an attempt to drum up support for a game that most of you already own in some form or another, the XBLA version will feature new achievements. Twelve of them (it's a little unclear whether these are all of them or just some) have been revealed by Microsoft, and they run from the easy ("Dissolve a Turret") to the not-so-easy ("Complete the game without ever taking a bullet"). If you're interested in seeing whether these will get you to buy the game again, the full list is after the jump.

Microsoft are yet to officially announce it, but a listing has appeared on Xbox.com for the digital re-release of 2004's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. We'll take that as announcement enough. It'll be the standard 1200 points, and will go on sale next Monday, October 20. For those left wanting by GTAIV's flat final stages, now's as good a time as any to go back to the days GTA games could get away with alien abduction sub-plots and jetpacks.

Remember when Dead Rising first came out on 360? If you had a HDTV, it was great. Nothing but zombie-killing good times. But if you had a small, CRT TV, you were in trouble, because a lot of the game's critical text was unreadable on low-def TVs. Seemed a strange thing to design for. And is something that would/could never happen for an Xbox Live Arcade title, with Introversion disclosing that part of the service's certification process involves ensuring games are playable on a television setup from 1994. Or, in other words, a 14" CRT TV hooked up via a composite cable. It's a charitable condition, but you have to wonder whether the cost in terms of presentation is worth catering for that chunk of the market.

Most DIY projects that involve taking one device and cramming it into the guts of another end up squeezing a large gadget into a smaller one. It's impressive! But to take a PowerBook G4 and to put it into the hulking husk of an Xbox 360? I'm not sure I get the point. You take an old laptop that was portable and stick it into something that is decidedly not portable. Uh, cool? And the DVD drive is sticking out of the side, making the Xbox 360's drive useless!

Xbox 360 consoles are already dirt cheap in the US. Now Microsoft has utterly soiled itself through a series of Dell coupons dropping the prices of the Xbox 360 Arcade, Pro, and Elite Holiday Bundles by $30 (now $169), $50 (now $250), and $70 (now $330), respectively, just in time for the holidays. Better yet, we're talking free shipping and either one or two free game tossed in for grins. Hurry now, the offers expire on Monday Thursday, October 23rd and it's not like you can afford to take the family to grandma's house this year anyway.

Microsoft are facing a lawsuit, brought under California's consumer protection statutes, was filed in the Sacramento County Superior Court. The lawsuit alleges that an excessive number of Xbox 360 consoles have failed, resulting in what is commonly known in the gaming community as the "red ring of death". The lawsuit further alleges that Microsoft concealed the excessive failure rate of its Xbox 360 consoles in order to compete with the pending launch of Sony's Playstation 3 and Nintendo's Wii gaming systems.
The class action lawsuit seeks an order that Microsoft disgorge all profits attributable to its sale of the Xbox 360, as well as that Microsoft publicly announce and implement a refund program in California.

XBOX 360 Controller emulator v1.0 for PC games using XINPUT.
This program will allow you to use other controllers rather than the XBOX 360 Controller for games like
'Juiced 2' and 'The Club'. This is an early version and the buttons/axes are hard coded
for the Logitech Cordless Rumblepad 2 Controller, but it may also work for other controllers.
I may update this in the future if it has enough demand, as for now it works perfectly in my case.
Source is included if you want to attempt to change it... remember to install the newest DX SDK.

For all their attempts at space opera 101, the real pull for a lot of Halo fans wasn't the struggle between humanity and a vast alien empire. It was multiplayer. Sweet, balanced, near-pefect multiplayer. But did you know that one of the series' most important legacies almost never made the cut? Hardy LeBel - who aside from having a fantastic name also worked on the first Halo's MP (he's now with Ubisoft working on Far Cry 2) - explains:
When we got bought by Microsoft, Alex Seropian and Jason Jones, who were the two principals of Bungie, came to me and [former Bungie engineer and animator] Michael Evans, and said, "Multiplayer is cut from Halo because we're trying to make it really work on the console and we just don't have the resources."
But we threw a fit and were like, "No way! You can't cut it! It's just too cool!"
They said, "We were hoping you'd say that — because you two guys have to resurrect it."
Oh, what could have been. A world without Blood Gulch isn't a world worth living in.

Microsoft are happy. Why? Because while many of you were convinced to part with pre-order money for the first Gears of War, going off naught but a marketing campaign and some gravelly voices, more of you have done so for Gears of War 2. And when you're a large global publisher, nothing looks better on the books than millions of advance sales. Such chest-beating over bean-counting is enjoyable not for the bean-counting itself, but for the precedent it sets; we fully expect the Gears 3 marketing to go one better and feature the press release "More Bottom-Feeding Forum Users Have Said They're Totally Buying Gears 3".

I don't even know how this would work, but Xbox Evolved says that the next Xbox (720 or Next, whatever) won't just be backward-compatible with games, it'll be forward-compatible. What the hell does that mean? Forward-compatibility would mean that games made for the 360 will be able to take full advantage of the next Xbox's muscle to look more amazing and like that generaation—not just cleaner textures and higher resolutions, but better frame rate, draw distance, the whole deal. Also, it would mean features in the 720's controller would be used in the game as well—in effect, yanking it forward a generation.

According to the internet, the next Xbox will be "forward compatible", meaning current Xbox 360 games will be enhanced on Microsoft's next console. Pass the salt.
That's according to a "source" belonging to site Xbox Evolved anyway.
According to the site current Xbox 360 games will see graphical improvements, such as increased draw distance, framerate and more anti-aliasing, on the next Xbox, similar to how PC games will look better on more high-end hardware.
"Our sources indicate that Microsoft is in a stage of 'testing the waters' before they nail down the final specs of the new machine. Introducing these options early on to developers means that the games they make for the Xbox 360 will have no life on the next platform," says the site.
Sounds likely enough to us. What do our technically apt readers think? Sound off below.

A little bit of behind-the-scenes info has come to light about Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade certification process via OXM.
Now we all know XBLA game have to have a certain number of achievements and be under a certain size, but did you know that they have to be playable on a 14-inch CRT television? If you did, stop reading now. There's nothing more for you here.
Introversion Software MD Mark Morris (currently working on Darwinia+ for XBLA) told OXM, "Microsoft has extremely strict technical certification requirements that you have to get right. One of the biggest challenges is that your game has got to be playable on a 14-inch CRT television.
"So you have to do all this visibility work in case someone is playing it on a composite cable through a TV, to make sure they can still read all of the text and tell exactly what's going on."
If anyone can remember playing Capcom's Dead Rising on an old-skool TV, and bursting blood vessels in their eyeballs trying to read the tiny text, then you'll know what he's talking about.
Read more about how games get onto Xbox Live over on OXM. It's well worth a look.

Ubisoft has popped a demo for Tom Clancy's EndWar onto Xbox Live Marketplace.
The sampler measures 1.6GB, and contains a map playable both in single-player and head-to-head battles.
Blurb for the demo states that only English, French and Spanish languages are supported, which we suppose relates to voice commands.
"Mach sie platt!" will not work, then, but "Marche lui sur la gueule!" and "Aplástalos!" will. If they are supported phrases, that is.
But there's plenty more to this action-focused real-time strategy interpretation of Tom Clancy's world than speaking at your TV.
Head over to our recent hands-on impressions of Tom Clancy's EndWar to find out more.
Tom Clancy's EndWar is due for Xbox 360 and PS3 on 7th November.
