Trivia junkies will have a bit longer to get their buzzer fingers in shape (at least one part of you will be!) as Microsoft has revealed that Xbox Live Primetime won't be making it in time for the New Xbox Experience launch next month. According to Forbes, Microsoft says it needs the extra time to "ensure a smooth launch of the system's new user interface."
Poor NXE. First Primetime gets limited to four regions at launch, then we hear movie sharing won't make the date and now Primetime will be altogether absent. By the time Nov. 19 rolls around, is the New Xbox Experience just going to be a bunch of stickmen avatars wandering around an empty gray box? We certainly hope not.

Ahh, customer service, it ain't what it used to be. Just 10 minutes after plugging his Rock Band instruments into the supplied USB hub, Jim Squires noticed that the cord to the unit was smoldering and had created a totally non-rocking electrical fire.
Upon informing EA of the problem, Squires was told by the company to plug the USB adapter back in to test it. No, seriously, he was. Now Squires is still trying to talk to an actual human at the company to let them know about the whole "the Rock Band adapter could have burned my house down" thing.

All those high-profile games leaks - just how do they happen? Well, here is one way...
An employee of games packaging specialists Technicolor has been arrested in connection with the theft of 100 unreleased copies of Gears of War 2 and Fable 2.
An investigation into the theft led Memphis police detectives to follow security guard Rodney Gray when he left his apartment on Thursday. After pulling him over for outstanding driving offences he was found to have a number of games in a bag he was carrying. A search of his apartment revealed games and DVDs valued at over $100,000.

Let this be a reminder: Bungie is no longer Microsoft's plaything. In an interview with GameIndustry.biz, Community Director Brian Jarrard indicated that once Halo 3 Recon is out the door late next year, the team working on it will move into territory unknown. "But I think when this project wraps up in a couple of months that will be the time when that team moves on to something else, and part of that team will move on to something else and part of them will probably be absorbed into one of the other projects that are already on the way," he said.
Granted, there's a lot of time between now and the Fall 2009 Halo 3 Recon release, so Bungie will be knee-deep in Halo for another year, at least. Provided none of Bungie's other teams tackle the space-loop saga, Microsoft has already assembled a new dream team to keep Halo alive.

Microsoft has whipped a Scene It? Box Office Smash demo onto Xbox Live.
There's no mention of whether this sampler will work without the buzzer peripherals from the first game, but we assume using a Xbox 360 pad will be fine.
Box Office Smash is the Buzz!-alike sequel to Scene It? Lights, Camera, Action, which threw all sorts of film-related clips at players and then quizzed them about what they saw.
The sequel is bigger and better, and also has online multiplayer, downloadable content and support for those NXE avatars due to arrive on 19th November.
As for when Scene It? Box Office Smash will arrive: late November seems to be the retailer estimate. We'll let you know when Microsoft stamps an official date on the game.

Yes, yes - Gears of War 2 has begun showing up on popular torrent sites across the internets, with a gigantic 6.76 GB file in convenient RAR format currently being seeded by hundreds of inconsiderate asshats around the world. I won't go into details because quite frankly I've gotten to the point where I don't even consider leaks news anymore. It's going to happen, be it a week away from release or a month away. The only difference between now and any other time of the year is that more high-profile games come out during the holiday season, which I suppose means this is a busy time for everyone in the industry, pirates included.
I think the most important thing to note in this post is that my spellchecker (yes, I use one) still fails to recognize asshat as a proper word. I know I can add it in myself, but that isn't the point. Until the word is officially recognized these leak posts will continue to make me a spellchecker rebel, living on the edge, clicking 'skip all' like some kind of madman.

As part of an exclusive NPD analysis, Gamasutra is estimating that the average U.S. Xbox 360 console is selling for $100 less than its lifetime average 3 months ago, making the system "ideally positioned" to compete this holiday season.
The price cuts worked: 69,000 Xbox 360 systems were sold each week during September, giving Microsoft its best hardware month this year. What is far more telling, however, is how the average price of each system sold changed after the price drop.
According to the NPD Group, the average sale price (ASP) of an Xbox 360 from its launch through July 2008 was just over $376. We estimate that the ASP was in the $330 to $340 range during August.
For September, we estimate that the ASP of the Xbox 360 dropped to $276, about $100 below its lifetime average and more than $50 below its average before the price drop.
If our estimates are correct, then this signals an even greater role for the $200 Arcade model in Microsoft's hardware mix.

Lionhead has confirmed that a patch enabling online co-op in Fable II will go live tomorrow, 21st October.
That's according to the Lionhead community blog, which has provided running updates on the multiplayer feature that once looked likely to be missing at launch.
Fable II will be released across Europe this Friday, after much talk of dogs and emotions and shooting husbands and revolutionary this and simplified that.
Thankfully, this time, Peter Molyneux appears to have delivered the goods.
Head over to our Fable II review for an overwhelming tale of success.

November 19 is the big day for 360 owners looking forward to the flashy New Xbox Experience backend. But you may not have to wait that long to get hold of it.
Major Nelson - MS' official Xbox blog - is teasing early access to NXE if you "keep an eye on" the blog.
In a recent podcast, MS said: "...I know you as my audience, you guys, you like to pick up and play. You want to get your hands on it and I don't blame you because you'll enjoy it. In fact, if you want to get your hands on it, let me just say this... keep an eye on my blog next week.
"If you want to get your hands on it early, that's all I'm going to say," Nelson reaffirmed (via Gameplay Unlimited).
And that really is all he says, not giving away any further clues as to how access will be given, or how limited.
We would imagine something as major (no pun intended) as a console backend would simply be too complicated for a game-like beta program, but it looks like Microsoft might be about to prove us wrong.
Best keep a close eye on the blog, then.

Clearly confident following worldwide price cuts, sales success and multiple bundles for retail, Microsoft has stated that the Xbox 360 will outsell the PlayStation 3 this Christmas.
Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360, has told Kotaku that the company expects the system to beat its rival in all major territories, not just North America.
"We expect to continue our price advantage over the PlayStation 3 for a long time," said Greenberg.
"And we feel confident that we'll outsell the PS3 this holiday season in North America and in Europe. We'll do it on a global scale."
With all three SKUs reduced in price, it's perhaps not surprising that the cheapest console – which sells for under USD 199 in the US and GBP 129 in the UK – is performing very well for Microsoft.
"We've seen lifts across all consoles, but the Arcade is doing exceptionally well," added Greenberg.
The system is currently outselling Sony's home console in Japan and the US. Figures from Media Create show the Xbox 360 has outsold the PS3 for the fifth week running in Japan.
During September, US sales of the Xbox 360 were 347,000 units, compared to 232,000 PlayStation 3 units.

The only way I would ever let a child of mine play a game over Xbox Live with voice chat enabled is if Microsoft created some kind of magical audio filtering technology that could sense dirty words as they were being spoken and censor them in real-time. Good for them then, as the U.S. Patent Office just approved a patent from Microsoft for exactly that. Applied for back in 2004, the patent describes a method by which:
An input audio data stream comprising speech is processed by an automatic censoring filter in either a real-time mode, or a batch mode, producing censored speech that has been altered so that undesired words or phrases are either unintelligible or inaudible.
Personally I would prefer one that replaces offensive speech with happier phrases, but technology can only go so far. "Daddy, he called me a mother hugging rainbow pony!" Of course he did son. Of course he did.

One of the nice things about Microsoft's new Zune is that it can download or stream songs at a hot spot. The downside: the music player won't work at just any hot spot. The big limit is that the Wi-Fi locale not only has to be free, but also of the variety that doesn't pop up a browser window before letting users online. That's because unlike the iPod Touch, the Zune has no browser
