As part of their Penny Arcade Expo presence, team Bungie lifted the mysterious curtain on their latest Halo 3 multiplayer map called Purple Reign Assembly, giving PAX attendees a new map to frolic about in. But knowing that it isn't a Midship, Gemini or any other Halo map remake, the big question is whether or not Assembly plays splendidly or if it is any fun at all. And we're pleased to tell you that, yes, it's an unbelievably well designed map that ranks high among our Halo 3 favorites. Impressions after the break.

A new build of the Star Control 2 remake with an arcade battle mode has been released for the 360 to celebrate the first year of the project. You will need an XNA subscription in order to run this game, also its worth noting that the game takes a while to load so don't worry if nothing happens at first. A new build of the 360 XNA game Sharky’s Air Legends was released last week. It is a multiplayer air based melee game with some very nice graphics and gameplay.
Changes in this version are:
* Added insta-kill Rockets!
* Bullet visibility improved. darker, slightly bigger and longer.
* Tweaked numerous settings for better balanced/more fun gameplay, particularly around rocket usage.
o earned Rockets retained when you die.
o rocket award progress resets when you die.
o rocket score points increased
o rocket ammo displayed as how many firings remaining instead of actual rockets. Rockets fire in pairs. e.g. 1 firing = 2 rockets fired. 1 is shown.
o rocket awards no longer double what you had. Too extreme. Instead the number of rockets awarded increase with each level.
2, 4, 6, 8, 10 etc…
o Maximum rockets capped at 16.
* both player names now show where before it was only the “other” players’
* Rocket level-up messages.
* Flying through an explosion no longer causes death.

Just ran into Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb over at the Microsoft booth in the PAX exhibit hall. After a bit of chatting I brought up the crash-prone iPhone Live app.
It crashes a lot, I told Hyrb, but I still use it because it's the only option for tracking folks on live on my phone. What about Live Anywhere?
They haven't forgotten about it, Hryb assured me, they've just had higher priority projects they've been working on. Things like the new Xbox Live Experience set to roll out this Fall. So it's still coming.
And what about the iPhone. Would Microsoft be behind an office App for the Apple device? Sure, why not. Plenty of Xbox 360 gamers have iPhones, he said.
I wait, anxiously, for that long-promised portable Live experience.

Is this what Microsoft was not so quietly sweeping under the carpet when they nixed the Bungie announcement during their E3 keynote? We have no clue as of yet, and all we can get out of Bungie is a "we can't talk about it." We're going to try and batter down Bungie's doors today to get more info.
So far, here's what we know. The menu screen says System Version 1.2, when the Halo 3 retail version is only at 1.1, and there's only a multiplayer option, no campaign. What does it all mean? We caught up with Bungie's Brian Jarrard who told us the screen was from a build that they brought on Friday that "wasn't really meant to be seen. However, it's really not that exciting, it's gotten kind of blown out of proportion."
While the shakey-cam photo above from Addict Gaming might be the only visual evidence of Mythic, it's definitely coming. At some point. Bungie wasn't forthcoming with details, but we'll see what we can find out.

Last night, during a PAX interview we had with Gears of War 2 lead writer Josh Ortega, our "Gears 2 not having a fulfilling ending" fears have (thankfully) been calmed, because we now know the story will not wrap like a certain Spartan 117 sequel.
When asked if Gears 2's storyline will follow in the footsteps of a game like Halo 2 and its unsatisfying cliffhanger, Ortega comforted our worries by admitting that players will "get nice closure." But not too much closure, because Ortega was also quick to acknowledge fact that he didn't want to end Gears 2 "too much where there couldn't be room to expand should you decide to." Because that would totally put a damper on any trilogy hopes. So, no unsatisfying Halo 2-style ending, a sense of fulfillment and room to grow the Gears franchise? Sounds like a campaign winner to us.

IGN has an interview with Cliff Bleszinski, design director for Epic Games, in which he discusses the achievements and unlockable content in Gears of War 2. He mentions that the game won't be getting a PC version as its predecessor did. Gamasutra has a related interview with Epic's Rod Fergusson, who talks at length about developing the new game after experiencing the popularity of the old one, and how he manages the franchise's growth into other forms of media. He also explains the decision-making process behind issuing Title Updates.

We can't verify the claim, but we have no reason to doubt the authenticity of this picture taken of Microsoft's new 16GB flash-based Zune 16 and FCC approved, 120GB Zune 120. It's not the backstory we find so solid, it's more the thought that some lonely soul is busy Photoshopping Zune rumor images on a Friday night -- an ennui so black we could not possibly fathom. Oh and the French? Zune's in Canada remember, blown-up international and the source country of this photo.

Worried that game dev Rare lost its knack for shooting stuff, taking a prolonged three-game detour through kiddie-town? First Viva Piñata, now Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise and Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, but what of the Goldeneyes and the Perfect Darks and the Conkers? In a (lengthy!) Q&A with Rare's Justin Cook, Trouble in Paradise's lead designer, says the team doesn't have "any plans for DLC" and "are taking a break from VP for a while to make something new."
Of course, Mr. Cook doesn't elaborate on what that "something new" may be, but it would appear we can safely cross "Viva Pinata DLC" off the list of anything else possible in the world. The rest of the three-page interview is chockablock with details on the new game so, if you're really curious about those new pinata races, hit up that Source link.

THQ has announced the Saints Row 2 Collector's Edition bundle, and in keeping with the game's general sense of fun and social responsibility, the box is shaped like a gun and you get a USB stick in the shape of a bullet.
The publisher has since told Eurogamer that "that particular pack is exclusive to 360". Boosh!
Obviously it's a bit difficult to fit a DVD inside a Beretta, but judging by the picture of the Xbox 360 version (see below), the idea is that the box is like a gun mounted in a frame, and the disc lives somewhere behind the veneer.
It's not alone, either, with a 1GB USB key in the shape of a golden bullet to keep it company, along with a 3rd Street Saints poster (a woman blowing the smoke away from the barrel of her man's gun) and a map of Stilwater, the game's sandbox location.
If you're more of a thinker than a brute, there's even an exclusive limited edition artbook so you can admire developer Volition's hustle, and particularly devoted consumers can also take advantage of exclusive content "including buddy icons and wallpapers".
Sadly though no henna gang tats, and despite multi-AVN-Award-winning "adult actress" Tera Patrick joining as a special producer, she doesn't seem to be doing anything special for collectors.
Saints Row 2 is due out on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on 17th October, and the Collector's Edition should be available at launch from shops and websites. And yes, that includes the UK - you can even see the BBFC logo on the box.
We've contacted THQ to find out if separate Collector's Edition packs exist for PS3 and PC, or whether it's just the 360 owners who they've identified as the gun-hungry crime stats of tomorrow.

expensive version of 360, The Arcade Station T2 is the probably the most expensive...and it actually belongs in an arcade. Essentially an arcade cabinet housing an Xbox 360, the Arcade Station T2 features two controllers, memory card slots and system link gaming (which we're assuming means local multiplayer, not full LIVE access). Potentially bundled games could include Halo 3, FIFA 08, Assassins Creed and Devil May Cry 4, but players won't need to shove in more quarters every time Master Chief gets teabagged. This will be a pay-for-time unit.

Ubisoft is giving away access codes for a multiplayer "VIP" demo of Tom Clancy's EndWar on 360 to those who pre-order at Gamestation - but it's only for 360 owners.
As Ubi explains: "The pre-launch VIP demo will feature multiplayer functionality and serve as a final stress test for the online systems of the massive war game, allowing fans to get a taste of EndWar's voice command enabled strategy prior to its release."
A spokesperson told us that the firm has no plans to do the same for PS3 owners.
"The VIP demo is 360-exclusive," a Ubisoft spokesperson told us. The possibility of a future offline demo for PS3, although unlikely, wasn't ruled out.
The demo kicks off on Xbox 360 in early October.

via Eurogamer
Q Entertainment has unveiled Meteos Wars for Xbox Live Arcade, due out this October for 800 Microsoft Points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.60).
Meteos Wars is a puzzle game and a descendant of Meteos for the DS, where columns of alien symbols descend from the ceiling and you have to move individual blocks to create vertical or horizontal lines of three or more.
The twist is that once lines are formed, the blocks don't disappear but act as a rocket, which fires them and the blocks above them upwards. Making additional lines nearby or within the same column accelerates the column's flight, and once it's gone from the top of the screen, it's gone.
If its ascent is arrested, however, it slowly tumbles back to the ground and forces you to try and prop it back up. As the player moves between planets, he or she encounters new alien symbol sets and different gravitational conditions, which changes the gameplay dynamic considerably.
The DS version used the stylus for control, but judging by the first Meteos Wars screenshots, players will use a d-pad or analogue stick-controlled cursor to manoeuvre blocks on Xbox Live Arcade.
The game's also had a facelift, according to Q, and picked up some new special moves and game modes. The moves are called Planet Impact attacks (Armageddon, Gambit, Sentinel and Tempest - sounds more like the Waitrose version of the Four Horsemen to us but never mind), while modes are Mission, Attack Mode (with one-minute, 100-Meteo and Challenge sub-modes) and Versus. The latter allows you to play two-player games locally or over Xbox Live.
Throughout it all, you'll find your way to more than 20 planets, and there will be all sorts of accessories to collect.
Back on the DS, we gave the original 9/10 in our Meteos review, despite some concerns about "scrubbing" - mashing the DS stylus across the screen to randomly line up blocks - which presumably won't be a problem on Xbox Live.
What might be, however, is speed of navigating a cursor across blocky, moving puzzle terrain, and it will be interesting to see whether Meteos' brilliant gameplay shines past the new interface layer.
Q Entertainment must think it does though, or else we wouldn't be here. Look out for Meteos Wars in October, when it will hopefully continue XBLA's fine run of recent releases - Braid, Bionic Commando Rearmed, Galaga Legions and Castle Crashers.

Face it, asking for fighting games with online to have zero to no lag is a tall order. Replicating that versus arcade experience is hard. Heck, when Virtua Fighter launched on the PS3 back in early 2007, it didn't have online. (Well, neither did the PS3, really.) Even Street Fighter IV producer Yoshinori Ono even admits that lag will be problematic for the home versions. Up front and honest, he tells the Official Xbox 360 Magazine:
Obviously lag will be a huge problem for online play. We're working on it. Compared to other games such as Virtua Fighter and Soul Calibur, they've got replay functions and so forth. It's quite difficult for 3D Street Fighter at the moment.
In order to prevent the lag we're thinking about trying to balance it up at user interface level and input timing by using joystick or something like that. We still haven't got a complete plan as yet. We're still working on it. That's all we can say at the moment.
Here's hoping they figure something out.

Legendary 2D shoot 'em-up developer Cave is in the process of bringing more of its revered titles to the Xbox 360, with 2007's arcade title DeathSmiles scheduled to hit retail in Japan for the console early next year.
DeathSmiles is Cave's second attempt at a horizontal shooter, following on from the arcade only Progear and carrying on the developer's tradition of creating fiendishly difficult games. It follows on the tails of both DoDonPachi: Dai-ou-jou and Ketsui, two other Cave titles which were recently slated for release on the Xbox 360 later this year. In the meantime, you can satiate your curiosity by trying to decipher the contents of DeathSmile's official website.

An interesting job listing went up on Tsumea, the well-known site for Australian and New Zealand game developers, yesterday, advertising a number of positions for a new game based on the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
The game is to be developed by Brisbane-based THQ Studio Australia and the listing simply states that the company is "seeking videogame development talent across all disciplines to work on an action game for Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 based on the popular Warhammer 40,000 universe from Games Workshop."
"We want the most talented, most enthusiastic and motivated developers to join us," it goes on to say, "and help push Brisbane and THQ Studio Australia to the forefront of Australian development." The company is looking for a Lead Artist, Lead Animator, Environment Artist, Animator, Senior Designer, Audio Designer, Engine programmer, Game Programmer and QA Lead.
While the listing itself gives no details as to the type of game it may be, THQ Studio Australia's website states that: "We are currently looking for people to work on a next-gen brutal, intimate melee combat game using a world-class brand".
