More dark snippets from the rumour mill today, this time concerning Xbox 2's hard drive capabilities ...again.
This is a subject that has been much discussed before, with various dark hints, conjecture and additional rumours adding petrol to the bonfire. Will Xbox 2have a hard disk? Will it not? Will it be removable, will it be fixed? Will it come in a number of flavours and sizes depending on which Xbox 2 edition you buy?
The list of hard drive rumours is almost endless but there's further speculation from US magazines today saying that Xbox 2 will not only have a hard drive, but that it will be removable and portable, so that you can carry around all your favourite games, saves and preferences, as well as MP3 files and video, possibly slotting them into other Xbox 2s to share this stuff with your friends and relations.
Our response? Well it's certainly a possibility. For our money Xbox 2 boasting a hard drive is almost a no-brainer, as it is offers one of the original Xbox's most significant advantages in this current generation, allowing you to store additional content, being key to Live and now so cheap, it won't significantly add to production costs.
On the other hand: a portable hard drive? Well it's feasible but not necessarily so. Why? Well broadband's so quick now you can share a lot of this stuff over the ether anyway, so why make your HD portable unless you want people to actually physically lug their digital data around or want to integrate it into another portable device?
So there you have it, or not. Portable HD a key feature or far out and futile? Let us know in the forums

Several of the biggest Xbox franchises are already planned for Xbox 2, according to Microsoft Game Studios boss Shane Kim, who has confirmed that Fable, Halo and Project Gotham Racing are all en route to the next-gen console.
Speaking in an interview on the official Xbox.com website, Kim said that he was "very proud" of MGS' track record in terms of the creation of new intellectual properties, and that these will provide Xbox with an "exclusive competitive advantage" in the next generation.
"Without giving away all the surprises we have in store," he commented, "gamers that love franchises like Halo, Fable, and Project Gotham Racing can safely assume we will continue to invest in them as we move into the next generation."
Kim didn't give any further details of the company's actual plans for any of the franchises in question, but the new Halo and Fable games, at least, are unlikely to appear until quite a while after launch - since developers Bungie and Big Blue Box both only finished work on their last games late in 2004.
Speaking about Microsoft Game Studios' role in terms of Xbox, Kim said that "we definitely have the talent and the willingness to create new breakthrough intellectual property."
"I'm actually very proud of our track record here," he continued, "as we have invested significant resources into creating new IP in this generation, with titles like Fable, Jade Empire, and Forza Motorsport. There's a collective vision at MGS about what we need to do to be creating truly original material, and yes, it will be central to how we move into the next generation."
Asked elsewhere in the interview whether Xbox had the potential to "unseat Sony", Kim was bullish on the prospects for the platform. "Absolutely," he responded. "Xbox has incredible momentum right now, and we are well-positioned heading into the next generation of consoles."

Yes, it’s true. It was only a matter of time until Hello Kitty worked her evil magic upon this particular gadget, as she has on oh so many others. The Hello Kitty Crystal Xbox Console takes that definitively non-pink Xbox and converts it to its long-latent color scheme. During the promotional period the entire bundle comes with a Helly Kitty Crystal Controller and Hello Kitty Mission Rescue Game for $99 with the purchase of selected Samsung LCD TVs, but if you’re not anywhere near Singapore you’re gonna be relegated to shelling out a fortune on eBay someday to get your paws on one.

Word has reached the ears of C&VG.com this morning that the forthcoming expansion for Halo 2 is to feature a special bonus in the shape of a side-scrolling, action-platform mini-game.
Speaking under strict conditions of anonymity, an industry source stated that the hidden, unlockable extra will allow fans to play through several of the original Halo levels in 2D.
Although our source was unwilling - or perhaps unable - to reveal how this mini-game will be unlocked, they did have one extremely interesting piece if information to divulge - rather than playing Master Chief, players will in fact control female version of the trooper Mistress Chiefette.
Mistress Chiefette will apparently be bedecked in vibrant pink battle armour, although it's unknown whether her identity will be depicted physically with impressive lady bumps on the chest plate.
In terms of levels, we know that the famous Library map at least is being recreated in 2D, which is good news as it went down a storm with fans.
Halo's full arsenal is expected to be present, and we've also been informed of a diversionary weapon called a handbag which Mistress Chiefette can apparently throw into a group of Covenant, enemies then forced to boogie around the lady's second best friend (the first being the mate who always accompanies them to the toilet) for several seconds.
Unfortunately our source was a little vague when it came to vehicles that are being included, although they assured us that a version of the Warthog - called the Wartsow - will feature.

In the beginning of March, Microsoft announced that Yoshiki Okamoto, former Capcom executive and current president of Game Republic, will be developing an unspecified number of exclusive next-gen Xbox games. In an interview published in the latest issue of Famitsu magazine, Okamoto hinted that he is currently developing two games for the next-gen Xbox, one of which will require a good network infrastructure but not too many hardware specs. The second will be an extremely large-scale project that requires a lot of funding from Microsoft and a lot of hardware specs.
Okamoto commented in the interview that he decided to develop for Microsoft because one of the projects being created by Game Republic matched perfectly with the infrastructure of the next-gen Xbox. He revealed that the untitled project falls in the party game genre and is being developed with Xbox Live in mind. It's said to present an extremely amicable atmosphere, which is a major change from the action and survival horror games that Okamoto often gets associated with due to his history at his previous company. Okamoto also revealed that he was offered jobs from different companies to develop fighting games but declined all of them since it made no sense to repeat what he was doing in his previous company.
Okamoto added that his aim for the next-gen Xbox is to create a game like the Nintendo 64's Super Smash Bros., in the sense that the game sold an extremely large number of copies when compared to sales of the hardware. He also commented that he hopes his game will boost the sales of the next-gen Xbox in Japan.
Famitsu also interviewed Tetsuya Mizuguchi, who revealed that his game in development for the next-gen Xbox could be categorized as an action one. However, Mizuguchi hinted that his next-gen Xbox title might surprise gamers in the same way as when he released Space Channel 5 after he made Sega Rally Championship. Mizuguchi commented that he was inspired to create a game for the next-gen Xbox after hearing of its hardware specs, which brought a vision of a game to his mind. But he also stated that Microsoft's views on the future of gaming matched many of his own, which made him lean toward making a game for the company’s console.
In terms of the next-gen Xbox hardware, Mizuguchi commented that he sees the machine's high-resolution and HDTV support as its main appeal, since it allows for more-detailed graphics. He also said that Microsoft thought into the sound system for the console and that it is definitely a machine he wants to develop a game for. Mizuguchi also gave high praise to the Xbox Live, commenting that it was a well-thought-out system with a good infrastructure. However, he did not reveal whether his game in development would make use of Xbox Live.
In the latest issue of Dorimaga magazine, Sakaguchi talked about his upcoming role-playing games for the next-gen Xbox. Sakaguchi stated that his interest continues to lie in storytelling and that storytelling is an essential factor when he's giving his best effort in a game's development.
One thing that gamers shouldn't expect from Sakaguchi are games that play like watching a movie, which is exactly what he criticized about recent console offerings. Sakaguchi commented that modern games let bystanders get as excited as the player. But considering they're interactive, Sakaguchi believes that games are really supposed to be something that only the person who's playing should be able to completely understand and enjoy, which is what he expects his games on the next-gen Xbox to be like.

rumours from spong
SPOnG can reveal today that the Xbox 360 will see an unprecedented downloadable demo offering from day one, with Xbox Live being shaped to deliver massive levels of on-demand content.
“It will mean more work for developers,” our source told us, “though it will offer what is essentially hype-free evaluation options to the consumer.”
Interestingly, SPOnG has had it confirmed by several senior sources that the Xbox 360 will feature wireless connectivity out of the box. Furthermore, data storage via PC will be featured, though information seen to date makes reference to this being used solely for media storage. However, downloadable Xbox content could, in theory, be stored too, though we should make it clear that the possibility of such content being stored in this way is mere speculation at this point.

Has Microsoft killed production of the Xbox in anticipation of the launch of the Xbox 360 later this year? Microsoft revealed last week that there was indeed a shortage of the consoles because of their “surging popularity” (hmmmm…), but now SPOnG is “confirming” that Microsoft has ended production of the orginal Xbox altogether and isn’t planning on making any more. Seems like it’d be a little early for Microsoft to be doing that, especially given that the Xbox 360 isn’t due out for another eight months or so, right? We’re still waiting for Redmond to issue an official statement, but Larry Hryb, Director of Programming for Xbox Live, is squashing the rumor on his blog, saying that “We are NOT pulling the Xbox from stores. Xbox consoles being in short supply since they are popular and stopping production are two VERY different issues.”

Larry Hryb, aka Major Nelson, Microsoft's Xbox Live Director of Programming, has gone on record to deny that recent Xbox shortages are a tactical move on the part of the Seattle giant to pave the way for the next-generation Xbox Xenon.
Recent days have seen a glut of stories swirl around the net stating that Xbox one was being pulled from shops and that retailers can expect no more deliveries of Uncle Bill's big black box. Reports that the worldwide stock of unsold Xbox units had shrunk to a mere two million and a lack of big name titles on the schedules post-E3 also fuelled the widely spread belief that Microsoft had all but abandoned Xbox one.
Well not according to Hryb, who writing on his personal website has attempted to slay the rumour dragon. Clearly ready to pull no punches as he hoists the Xbox One standard high, Hryb writes:
"There are a few stories floating around this vast thing we call the Internet today that say the Xbox has been pulled from retailers. Furthermore, people are saying that we have "reached our targets and want to get ready for the next console. Let me be perfectly clear: We are NOT pulling the Xbox from stores.
"Xbox consoles being in short supply since they are popular and stopping production are two VERY different issues. Don't believe the mis-information that is filling your browser/inbox/rss feed. Now, back to your regularly scheduled rumor-mongering."
While Hyrb admits that his blog is "my personal opinion and is not read or approved by anyone before it is posted", it would seem unlikely a senior Microsoft employee would go on record without knowing what he was talking about.
However it is almost certain that Xbox Xenon will launch before the end of this year so it would seem a natural progression for Microsoft to slowly wind down its stock as it prepares for the key next-generation Christmas launch.
But what do you think? Should MS send Xbox one the way of all flesh or would you like to see it preserved for posterity and even overlap into the next-gen? Let us know in the forums below...

SPOnG has received emails that indicate a complete withdrawal of Xbox hardware in the coming months, with claims surfacing today of a total end to generation one Xbox production.
According to senior sources within publishing, retailers are being instructed not to list Xbox hardware in their next catalogue publications. “They are telling us that they have reached their targets and want to clear the way for the next machine,” we were told, with our source speaking under terms of anonymity. “It’s reached the point where the amount of money they lose per unit, combined with the fact that they might well eat into their own [Xbox 360] market share, means that continuing the run is just not feasible.”
Of course the big question remains of exactly how many Xbox hardware units are still available. “There are only two million units left and no more will be produced,” continued our source. “There are 400,000 allocated for the whole of the European territory. After that there will be no more. It was confirmed to me that Microsoft has no plans to manufacture the original Xbox once the new console hits the market.”

In a striking case of deja vu, those eager beavers on the internet have managed to leak the Xbox version of Doom 3 a mere week before it was due to hit store shelves.
Word has it that the Collector's Edition has been leaked, including not just Doom 3, but singleplayer and multiplayer versions of both Doom and Doom 2. Just like the PC version, internet users have already begun to threaten the sales numbers for the game before it even hit the streets, creating a Hell on Earth for Activision and Id. Poor sales were blamed on the leak of the PC version, so we can only hope that the majority of gamers will resist temptation and buy the game when it's released next week.

Call it Halo 2: Combat Expanded. After much speculation, Bungie today announced plans to release an expansion for its popular first-person shooter, Halo 2. It will not, however, contain a single-player portion that many hoped might wrap up Halo 2's abrupt campaign mode ending.
The additional content, appropriately called Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack, will contain nine multiplayer maps of varying shapes and sizes. Xbox Live users will have the chance to start fragging one another on four of the maps in late April. Two of the maps will be free, and the other two will be available for $5.99. The remaining five maps will be downloadable for $11.99 on June 28.
Those Halo fanatics who still prefer their multiplayer old-school, via LAN, needn't worry: The entire collection will be available in a packaged retail version on June 28, for $19.99. The retail version will also come with a few bonuses. There will be an "animated side story" detailing events from the single-player portion of Halo 2, set in New Mombosa. There will also be a documentary focusing on the map designers, strategies for playing on the new maps, and detailed overviews of each battleground. The disc will also contain all Halo 2 updates and fixes, as well as, presumably, the first bonus map, Foundation. This particular bonus map was unlockable and later released to the masses over Xbox Live. Bungie has also discussed putting in "possibly one or two other little treats."
Gamers who aren't thrilled about shelling out some coin for additional content will still get the opportunity to play the maps...later. The entire collection will be made absolutely free via download "by late summer."
The first batch of maps to be released over Xbox Live will be titled Containment, Warlock, Sanctuary, and Turf. Each map was created after Halo 2's release last November, and each isn't of your typical "one base on one side and another base on the other" architecture.
The first of the two free maps, Containment, is a large playing field in the frozen tundra of Delta Halo. "One of the largest Halo maps ever," Containment gives Spartans and Elites the option of navigating the terrain by chugging around in vehicles or hoofing it to the many teleporters. A switch in the middle of the playing field, completely exposed to potential snipers, opens vehicle access to the looming bases, similar to the gate in Zanzibar. Containment was designed for large battles, with capture the flag specifically in mind.
Warlock, the second of the two free maps, is loosely based on the map Wizard, which appeared in the original Halo. Built from the ground up to take advantage of Halo 2's graphics engine, Warlock is a small- to medium-sized map with four-way symmetry, making it perfect for such games as four-team territories. The map has a castlelike quality to it, with a shrine jutting up from the middle of the field.
Turf is an urban map set in Old Mambosa. The streets are lined with storefronts, complete with playable interiors, and a catwalk system above the streets, which can be manipulated, thus making this map two-tiered. The initial development on Turf was handled with capture the flag and territories in mind, but Bungie has deemed it "surprisingly flexible."
The final map in the April bunch is Sanctuary. This map, on the surface, looks awfully similar to the stone Covenant stronghold set in the mountain from the single-player game. The map is focused on team-oriented play and features several creeks, pools, and waterfalls.
Little is known about the five remaining maps, save for their names: Terminal, Elongation, Gemini, Backwash, and Relic.
Once available, the free maps will be integrated into the Xbox Live matchmaking sets, and the two premium maps will have their own playlists (for those gamers who bought them). As all the maps become universally available, they'll be integrated into the matchmaking system. In addition, Bungie will be altering the current playlists and will introduce an entirely new two-on-two playlist

Like most of the juiciest dirt on the Xbox 360, none of this is substantiated, but a British magazine is reporting that Microsoft’s next-gen console will not be backwards compatible (frustrating, but not the end of the world), won’t come with a hard drive (which sort of jibes with what we’ve heard about MSFT offering an attachable drive), and that there will be different Xbox 360s tailored to different regions (not sure what that means for developers or why there would need to be different regional versions).

Fast becoming the story that won't end, the Xbox power cord saga has been given a new lease of life after an Xbox blew up in the face of its Swedish owner, despite having one of the all-new 'safe' power cords installed.
"I got sparks in my face and the whole apartment smelled of the burn," explained the unfortunate Anahi Reinoso to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet last week.
This follows on from Microsoft's February Xbox power cord recall attempt, where the company provided new 'safe' power cables to users for free, to replace the old faulty, and potentially dangerous, ones.
However, despite claiming it was the cables that contained faults, Xbox technical enthusiasts discovered a problem with the hardware, specifically the soldering joints and Firefox power unit.
Suggestions that the problem was with the hardware itself where given extra weight when people started to receive the new power cables. Instead of resembling standard PS2-like leads, they featured a massive box that, according to experts, is simply designed to act like a fuse, nullifying a threat of a fire inside the console.
Still, it appears the leads can't even achieve this task if the Swedish report is anything to go by.
We contacted Microsoft this morning but they were unable to offer any further comment on the official statement made earlier this week,

Speaking to leading trade publication MCV this week, Xbox frontman J Allard made an allusion that the next-generation Xbox will come in various forms rather than a standard unit as was expected.
"We have ways. We have ideas. Look at cell phones. You can have snap-on faceplates, you can change the skin and the batteries, and you can change the ringtones. I think we need to have a global foundation, and then personalise within region."
Going on to discuss the possibility of a hard-drive for Xbox, Allard again lent weight to escalating speculation that moving state mass storage might be an optional extra for Xbox 360, or not included at all. "My cell phone is incredibly personalized without a hard drive," he said. "One reason is because of the great connection to the service."

One million Xbox 2s will be available across Europe by the end of the year, according to MCV. That figure will rise to 1.5 million by the end of March 2006, a source at a major games publisher has told the industry publication.
The same source has also hinted that NextBox would not be backwards compatible with current Xbox games, which has led to suggestions that many publishers are now delaying the release of significant titles in order to, as MCV puts it, "ensure they are made next-gen ready to insure against ongoing shortages".
While there's still no official confirmation from Microsoft, it's widely expected that Xbox 2/Xenon will be launched globally in November.

Keith posted this at Emufanatics

SF_ has posted a small work in progress report over at NGEmu's forums. Was posted on the 22nd, but NGEmu is experiencing some stability issues lately so took awhile before I saw the update.
Here is what _SF_ posted on the forums. ( Note: Questions are from another member and the answers are from _SF_)
"Are you going through each xdk like caustik has to, or have you found another method?"
I'm making it lower-level, so the XDK version shouldn't matter anymore. I'm busy with other stuff though so it's taking a while.
"And what is this new emulator you say you are working on?"
Maybe I'll reveal it later, but it's not really ready right now. It does have some interesting stuff in it that I'd like to show though.
"Good to see you're alive and you're at least a little active with the project "
Thanks, I'll try to put in some more work on Xeon.

post you last xbox game you bought,(and when you buy a new one too)
Deus Ex: invisable war
got it 2nd hand with pikmin (buy on get one 1/2 price, so total £18)
i really liked the first game (only playing the first one last summer), and this version has a lot going for it but what does annoy me is that you don'r really take sides as you can change sides at any time back and forth!, + the order which i see as the good side allways want to to kill someone while the WTO, the bad guys don't want me to kill people, so i don't reall want to take either side : (
still worth playing, i have only played 4-5 hours (according to save file, but that does not include deaths)
