Imitation, as the saying goes, is the sincerest form of flattery. So should Sony therefore be flattered that Microsoft is looking into the potential of an EyeToy-like device for Xbox 2? Probably.
News of camera action on Microsoft's next console has come via a recent Bloomberg News interview conducted with Microsoft Vice President and XNA Chief Architect, J Allard.
According to reports, Allard spoke to Bloomberg News of a camera situated on top of television sets that would allow players to control games with body movement, the device rivalling Sony's EyeToy.
Allard admitted that Microsoft is "trying to take some learnings from what our competition has done with cameras that let players control games," also saying that: "We've got a couple of those answers. We're going to turn that into a couple of solutions."
Microsoft is widely expected to unveil Xbox 2 at E3 in May so, should that occur, we'll no doubt learn more about these "couple of solutions" then.

An unofficial FBAxxx, heres whats new:
- updated to FBA v0.2.95.23
- added 19xx Asia (CPS2)
- added Alien vs Predator Asia (CPS2)
- added Puzz Loop 2 (CPS2)
- added The King of Fighters 10th Anniversary (Kof2002 bootleg/hack)
- changed the way buttons are configured (much more simple now, simply press the button you want to assign)
- corrected support for 128MB XBoxes, I guess no more "slowmotion" (still untested because of a fried 128MB Xbox...)
- corrected Diagnostic mode problem with cave games, you can now go in and out of diagnostic mode by selecting it in the menu or with the 1st player BACK + WHITE combo during gameplay
- removed Autounibios (causing a lot more trouble than anything, option for lazy people)
- removed no CRC check (if CRC are checked, there is a very good reson)
it's all i can remember for now...
To play Puzz Loop 2 with analog controls (left thumbstick):
put the provided pzloop2j.fs in folder E:\TDATA\ffff0504\cfg\
alternatively, you can enter the diagnostic mode and do the following:
- select 7th line (labelled 7) with button 1 (well it's simple, the game only allow 1 button)
- select first line (labelled 1) press button,
- select the 7th line and move the pad left/right until you see "2(some japanese characters)"
- select the last line, press button
- select last line (labelled 4) press button
- select last line (labelled 9) press button
now, you can play with left/right to rotate (believe me, it's FAR better than a digital control)
As ever hit the usual sources for it

Microsoft Corp. said the next version of its Xbox, the world's No. 2 video-game console, might offer a camera that lets players use body movements to control games.
The camera, mounted on a TV to capture a player's gestures, would rival Sony Corp.'s EyeToy, said J Allard, who helps run the Xbox unit.
Microsoft has sold about 20 million Xbox units globally and is adding features to bolster the popularity of the next edition, due as soon as this year. Sony, maker of the top-selling PlayStation 2 games console, also plans to unveil a new version of its device.
"We're trying to take some learnings from what our competition has done" with cameras that let players control games, said Allard at the Games Developers Conference in San Francisco. "We've got a couple of those answers. We're going to turn that into a couple of solutions."

Gamespot has coverage of the appearance on an official Korean Xbox site of a "Halo 2 X-Pack". The possible expansion is another possible way for Bungie and Microsoft to get the heavily foreshadowed ending to fans of the series. From the article: "Such a Halo 2 expansion could be a twofold boon for Microsoft, adding another incentive for gamers to join its online service and squeezing further dollars from the nearly 7 million gamers who already have Halo 2."

Microsoft's newfound troika of Japanese development heroes will be given total creative freedom in bringing their ideas to Xbox 2 according to Microsoft Game Studios general manager Shane Kim.[br][br]"We always give our partners almost all of the license that they need. We don't want to tell any of our partners what kind of game they should be making," Kim said of Microsoft's recent announcements that Hironobu Sakaguchi, Tetsuya Mizuguchi and Yoshiki Okamoto were all working on Xbox 2 titles.[br][br]Using Tetsuya Mizuguchi as an example, Kim said the creative genius behind the likes of Rez and Space Channel 5 has "a great idea for a title, we love it, we want to get behind him, and I'm confident that it's going to be successful for us both in Japan and outside."[br][br]Kim admitted that Microsoft's deal with the three developers was not exclusive, but insisted "they are going to be pretty focused on the Xbox titles," and called it "a big decision" for them to commit.[br][br]Although Sakaguchi-san last week spoke of his aims for the two RPGs his Mistwalker team will be producing, Kim wouldn't be drawn on the number or nature of the titles, stating only that the bigwigs "don't want to be doing 'me too' titles," and were instead questing after "that compelling idea".[br][br]The other thing Microsoft wants is "a passion for the platform", Kim said. "They've got to be passionate about wanting to tie their cart to our horse, and they've got to be passionate that the platform is going to enable them, whether it's Xbox or Xbox Live, for example, to help them realize their creative visions," he added.[br][br]As far as the Japanese market is concerned, however, many commentators would argue that the three developers are horses to the Xbox 2 cart rather than the other way round.[br][br]Nevertheless, it's still a major step for Microsoft in the Far East - as you might imagine given that the Japanese-focused announcements have been the company's first official word on next-generation software.[br][br]Kim echoed that sentiment. "When guys of this stature are working with Microsoft and Xbox, it really does help to validate what we've been saying and what we're going to be doing there," he concluded.

Microsoft's hat trick of top-notch Japanese games developers will be afforded the freedom to create whatever kind of game their genius dictates, according to Microsoft Game Studios' general manager Shane Kim.[br]"We don't want to be doing 'me too' titles," said Kim in an interview with GameSpot. "We're looking for that compelling idea. There's no question that we believe that the fundamental part of any of these guys' success is the passion for the idea."[br][br]In a move that surprised and delighted Xbox fans around the world, Microsoft last week announced that Hironobu Sakaguchi (creator of the Final Fantasy series), Tetsuya Mizuguchi (creator of Rez and Lumines), and Yoshiki Okamoto (Capcom legend and stalwart of the Resident Evil series) would create a range of Xbox 2-exclusive titles.[br][br]Kim emphasised that the next-generation Xbox will be the perfect platform for the developers to create new and innovative games. "They've got to be passionate that the platform is going to enable them to help them realize their creative visions. I think if you talk to these guys, that's exactly what they would say." [br]Kim also spoke of how having Sakaguchi-san, Mizuguchi-san and Okamoto-san on board the Xbox 2 gravy train would give Microsoft the chance to break into the Japanese market - an area the Xbox has struggled to penetrate.[br][br]"We haven't had the greatest amount of success in Japan this generation," he said. "In order for us to do well, we think we need to make a significant investment in the market, and I think we've done that."[br][br]Finally, Kim spoke of how he hoped the presence of such famous Japanese games industry names would attract both gamers and other developers to the system. "I think it sends a great message that guys of this stature are coming to work with us and making a big commitment to our platform."[br][br]More news on Saksguchi-san, Mizuguchi-san and Okamoto-san's Xbox 2 projects soon.

Gamasutra.com has the news that UK retailers are beginning to be suspicious of the continued shortages of Xbox console supplies. From the article: "So prolonged, and apparently unexplained, have the problems become that conspiracy theories have begun to circulate regarding ulterior motives for the shortages. Many retailers are now openly speculating whether Microsoft has in fact ceased production of the console, in favour of the next generation machine, or is at least limiting its support to larger retail chains." Maybe you should have hung on to the GameCube, huh guys?

March 3rd, 2005, 17:10 Posted By: wraggster
Here in the states, the Xbox has proven its mettle. Gamers are enthusiastic about Xbox Live and sales of the hardware have picked up speed in recent months. But in Japan, the machine is a flop. Since the unit's Japanese launch in 2002, the software-giant-turned-console-maker Microsoft has sold 463,000 units, according to Enterbrain, a local tracking company in Japan. As reported in the Wall Street Journal earlier this week, that figure compares with 3.7 million units of Nintendo's current-generation console, the GameCube, and over 17 million units of Sony's market leader, PlayStation 2. [br][br][br]But news today out of Redmond suggests Microsoft is getting ready to fight back in the next-gen war that will see PlayStation 3, GameCube 2, and Xbox Next square off later this year, or at the latest, next year. [br][br]To that end, Microsoft today confirmed that it had entered into two separate agreements with Yoshiki Okamoto, president and CEO of Game Republic Inc., and Tetsuya Mizuguchi (shown above), chief creative officer and producer of Q Entertainment Inc., for an unspecified number of exclusive Xbox Next games. Neither deal prevents the developers from working with other companies or on other platforms. No additional details were revealed in today's announcement. [br][br]The news today follows a similar announcement made last week, which was former Square producer, Hironobu Sakaguchi, now with his own development studio, Mistwalker, would be creating two Xbox Next-exclusive role-playing games. [br][br]Yoshiki Okamoto is a former Capcom producer who found traction with gamers in Japan with his Street Fighter and Resident Evil franchises. Since mid-2003, he has been the head of his own development studio, Game Republic. [br][br]Tetsuya Mizuguchi brings a similarly rich history of game development and game design to the deal. After years of leading the arcade and home units responsible for the Sega GT and Sega Rally brands, he turned his energy toward more creative efforts including Space Channel 5 and Rez. [br][br]After leaving Sega in late 2003, he founded his own company, Q Entertainment, and has two PSP titles, Meteos and Lumines, on the cusp of releasing. [br][br]Mizuguchi and Okamoto are also involved in their own company, Mobcast, which is focused on mobile game development. [br][br]In a conversation yesterday with Microsoft Game Studio head Shane Kim, we learned that the strategy behind the high-profile (and, likely, very expensive) additions to the Xbox Next team is to demonstrate to those uncommitted Japanese designers that Xbox Next is a desirable platform to work on. Whether or not that theory will pan out as Kim and his Microsoft team expect, with Japanese designers jumping on the Xbox Next development bandwagon, should become apparent in the coming months leading up to the new console's launch.

Noted Japanese developers Yoshiki Okamoto of Game Republic and Tetsuya Mizuguchi of Q Entertainment have both signed up to develop Xbox 2-exclusive titles for Microsoft Game Studios.[br][br]The announcement follows last week's revelation that Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguichi has committed his Mist Walker studio to developing a pair of RPGs for the next-generation platform, and is expected to greatly increase Microsoft's standing in the Far East.[br][br]As with the Sakaguchi announcement, however, it does not appear that the two designers and their respective studios will be limiting their entire output to the Xbox 2 platform, as some may fear glancing at headlines.[br][br]As a former Capcom executive, Okamoto has of course been involved with Xbox before - Capcom being one of the few Japanese firms to lend support to the console in its current incarnation - but Game Republic is still a feather in Microsoft's next-gen cap regardless.[br][br]Equally, there's no question of how important Mizuguchi's involvement will be to hardcore gamers around the world who have come to love his distinctive work, which includes the likes of SEGA Rally, Space Channel 5 and Rez.[br][br]Microsoft today argued that the announcement underscores "a growing preference... for the next generation Xbox platform" among developers. VP Peter Moore reckons "Gamers will be riveted by the experience enabled by such creators when given the proper canvas and tools."[br][br]Okamoto, whose previous life at Capcom included spells on Street Fighter and Resident Evil, amongst other things, said his goal "is to make completely fresh and riveting experiences that gamers have never had before," and like Sakaguchi last week he said that he felt with Xbox 2 he could "turn this vision into a reality".[br][br]Mizuguchi, meanwhile, said that he hoped to graduate from games that brought "ultimate fun" to games that would "give gamers the most emotional and thrilling gaming experience possible - joy, thrills, sympathy and speed". [br][br]Mizuguchi and Sakaguchi's shared emphasis of "emotion" in describing their goals for next-gen Xbox titles in the last week is an interesting and Microsoft will hope symbolic reflection of the rhetoric surrounding the launch of the industry-leading PlayStation 2 four years ago, when the "Emotion Engine" was the hype du jour. [br][br]Xbox 2, which Microsoft plans to launch in late 2005, will be the first next-gen platform to market, and the company hopes to capitalise on the significant gap in the market before PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Revolution appear in 2006 - just as they believe Sony did with the PlayStation 2, which emerged long before Xbox and GameCube.[br][br]"The power and advanced technologies of the next-generation Xbox platform will enable winning games with powerful emotions, high-quality graphics and sound," Mizuguchi concluded. Whether that's true or not remains to be seen, but with names of this calibre on the credit list we can at least say that Japan will be waiting to see this time around, too, rather than just staring on indifferently.[br]

Just a few days after the announcement that the creator of the Final Fantasy series was joining Microsoft Games Studio, Voodoo Express has the news that more venerable designers will be joining the company. Yoshiki Okamoto and Tetsuya Mizuguchi will be teaming up with Microsoft Games to produce titles for the next generation Xbox. From the article: "Microsoft is now happy to announce that the driving creative minds behind the likes of Resident Evil, Rez, Street Fighter and Space Channel 5 have joined forces with the company to create exciting new titles for the Xbox Next, primarily designed to attract Japanese gamers to the system:"

Microsoft's next-gen Xbox - also known as Xbox 2, Xbox Next, Xbox 360 or Xenon - will come with a removable iPod-style hard drive and feature customisable pop-on-pop-off covers like those diddy Smart cars.[br]According to internet reports, that is. The Xbox 2 rumour mill is on full grind right now, but it seems the speculation is homing closer and closer to the truth as the next-gen machine's expected late 2005 release date looms.[br][br]Most interestingly of all the whispers riding the winds of rumour, a report on gadget website Engadget suggests that Xbox 2 will indeed feature a detachable hard drive. This feature has been rumoured since Xbox big cheese J Allard spoke of such a removabel device last year.[br][br]According to Engadget's reports, the hard drive will slot neatly into a slick recepticle on the top of the system, "almost like the hood scoop on a muscle car". Furthermore, it's suggested that you will be able to buy Xbox 2 with or without the hard drive (with an option to pick one up later), an assertion that reinforces claims that the Xbox 2 will be available in three versions - a basic console, the console with hard drive fitted, and a PC-style version with additional features.[br]While this may sound strange considering the current Xbox has a hard drive, we imagine you'd still be able to hold your saved games on a memory card while the detachable hard drive would be used for multimedia files and memory-intensive applications.[br][br]So can we expect detachable hard drives? Engadget is quoting a source close to the product, and we've certainly heard whispers from our sources that we should expect a detachable storage device. Looking pretty likely, then.[br][br]But there's more. Gaming blog Kotaku is also carrying alleged Xbox 2 information, again from an "exclusive source". This little haul of details seems to confirm the Xbox 360 moniker (which certainly seems to be gathering legitimacy amongst powerful people within the industry), offers that the console design will look softer with "sweeps and curves" replacing the hard lines of the original Xbox, and suggests that the console's exterior can be customised with "designer face plates".[br][br]We've also heard that Xbox 2 will indeed strike a smoother, slimmer pose than its little brother. According to our sources, it'll weigh in with about the same size and weight as Sony's PS2 (the old one, not the wee one) and feature curved edges designed to slim it down even further.[br][br]And the official word on all this? Unfortunately, representatives from Microsoft UK were unavailable for comment at the time of press, but given the speculative nature of all these reports we think we can imagine the response we'd get...[br][br]We'll keep watching the rumours and bringing you the latest on Xbox 2.

Our same reliable source who delivered the goods for us a few weeks back with the inside dirt that the name for the next Xbox is indeed the Xbox 360 has just hit us up with a couple of other nibblets: One, that the Xbox 360 is definitely going to come with wireless controllers; and two, that it’s going to have an optional hard drive that attaches to the top of Xbox 360 “in a really slick way, almost like the hood scoop on a muscle car.” Better still, “You’ll be able to add the hard drive afterwards without having to take the box apart if you didn’t buy the hard drive version of the Xbox 360.” Yeah, that means there are going to be (at least) two versions of the Xbox 360 available when it goes on sale, one with a hard drive, and one without.
