It's become customary for console makers to release multiple versions of the same console within their lifetime. However, next-gen consoles might be available in more than one flavor right at launch. The PS5 is already releasing in two versions, one with an optical drive and an all-digital one. Reports suggest that Microsoft is also working on more than one version of its Xbox Series X but with a different strategy from Sony's.
Today The Verge reported on Microsoft's multiple next-gen console plans. Their source "familiar with Microsoft’s Xbox plans" confirm a Lockhart profiling mode in dev kits. The latter refers to a second Xbox Series X console version, codenamed Lockhart, which is a less powerful but cheaper entry into next-gen gaming. The Lockhart profiling mode allows developers to toggle "Lockhart mode" and gauge how their games will perform on the weaker hardware, which is geared towards 1080p or 1440p gaming.
The Verge's report also mentioned that Lockhart's specs include "7.5GB of usable RAM, a slightly underclocked CPU speed, and around 4 teraflops of GPU performance". For comparison, the known Xbox Series X (codenamed Anaconda) includes 13.5GB of usable RAM, and targets 12 teraflops of GPU performance.
Moreover, The Verge's claims are supported by a recently-leaked Game Development Kit release from June 2020 which mentions support for "AnacondaProfiling" and "LockhartProfiling" modes:

Microsoft has outlined a few new details about how its Smart Delivery system will work for the Xbox Series X, specifically around transferring progress.
In a blog post today, the hardware maker confirmed that titles using Smart Delivery will not only allow users to buy a game once and play it across both Xbox One and Xbox Series X systems, but that progress will also be saved across systems -- including game libraries, progression, and achievements.
The system also allows any games that release optimized versions for the Xbox Series X to automatically offer that version for owners of the title on that hardware for no additional cost.
Microsoft's Smart Delivery system is planned for all first-party titles that are being optimized for Xbox Series X, as well as any third-party titles that opt into the system, with the following titles already confirmed:
- Halo Infinite
- Cyberpunk 2077
- Assassin's Creed Valhalla
- Destiny 2
- Dirt 5
- Scarlet Nexus
- Chorus
- Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2
- Yakuza: Like a Dragon
- The Ascent
- Call of the Sea
- Gears 5
- Second Extinction
- Metal: Hellslinger

Microsoft's head of Xbox Phil Spencer is banking on immersion to make the Xbox Series X a must-buy for gamers, and he thinks the Xbox All Access cell phone-like payment plan will help them afford it.
In a Game Lab Live keynote today, Spencer answered a question from interviewer Seth Schiesel about what kinds of experiences he expected to highlight the power of the Xbox Series X.
"This is always a difficult question because I know people are looking for the one, two or three tech that only show up on a certain platform or is only made possible on a certain platform," Spencer said. "And I think it's just a matter of degrees. It has been for a while."
There were clearer differences to the sort of games that could be created by new hardware in previous generational shifts, Spencer said, pointing to the jump from 2D games to 3D games as an obvious difference for players.

Microsoft is giving up its retail footprint, as the company today announced it would be closing its Microsoft Store brick-and-mortar locations.
The company's website lists 82 such locations between the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and Puerto Rico.
The closures will lead to Microsoft taking a pre-tax charge of roughly $450 million for the quarter ending June 30, with that largely coming from asset write-offs and impairments.
Microsoft said retail team members will instead work remotely to provide sales, training, and support for customers.

Cxbx Reloaded (2020/06/08) is released. Cxbx-Reloaded is an emulator for running Microsoft Xbox (and eventually, Chihiro) games on Microsoft Windows. The project began life as a fork of Cxbx with added 64-bit support. Work is currently underway to backport some of the improvements from Dxbx. Cxbx-Reloaded is still pretty unstable, don't expect it to run much at this point.

More than $1.4 billion has been spent on ID@Xbox games to date, according to the programme's European lead Agostino Simonetta.
Simonetta gave the new figure as part of a talk at the GamesIndustry.biz Investment Summit Online. Player spending stood at $1 billion in July 2018, so the additional $400 million has been spent in less than two years.
ID@Xbox was first announced in August 2013, and the programme has now grown to encompass 3,400 studios across 64 countries -- at least one game from every continent except Antarctica has been released, Simonetta noted.
Microsoft is aware of around 1,800 ID@Xbox games in some stage of development.

Electronic Arts has revised its offer around the Xbox Series X version of Madden NFL 21, promising a free upgrade until next year's game releases.
The publisher announced during last month's next-generation games showcase on Inside Xbox that players who purchase the game one Xbox One will receive the next-gen version at no extra cost.
However, Polygon reports this originally came with caveats. A statement on EA's website previously said players would have to buy Madden NFL 21 before December 31, 2020 to be eligible for the offer, and claim the Xbox Series X version by March 31, 2021.

Head of Xbox Phil Spencer has reiterated that Xbox Series X is still on course for a global launch this Christmas, despite the disruption caused by COVID-19.
Speaking on Talking Games with Reggie and Harold, a podcast co-hosted by former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, Spencer said the platform holder is unlikely to delay its next- generation console into 2021.
He said the company just completed its latest hardware review last week and "feel good" about the supply chain required to launch the console.
"It feels like we'll be able to get enough units," he said. "We're pretty committed, as we've talked about, to a worldwide launch, which regretfully we didn't do with Xbox One. It took us months and months to hit some of the incredibly important markets. Worldwide launch is important to us."
Spencer previously stressed the importance of a worldwide launch, and expressed regrets over the staggered rollout of the Xbox One, on another podcast earlier this year.
He also told Fils-Aime that Xbox is "making progress" with the software and games for its next console, although notes that any process that "requires physical collaboration" -- such as motion capture and music recording -- has been impacted by COVID-19.
"Really, on the games side, things that are pre-content complete might be impacted more than the things that are post-content complete," he said.
Spencer also acknowledged that Xbox has had some logistical hurdles when it comes to QA and physically getting test machines into people's hands.

Microsoft has already promised that their Xbox Series X will support new games running at high resolutions, with above average refresh rates supported on the console. But older games will also benefit from the Series X’s power. Backwards compatible titles won’t just run via emulation or through included legacy hardware—they’ll be running natively on the system. Features that will be available for Xbox Series X titles, such as HDR, Quick Resume, and fast loading times will also apply to Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, allowing for better visuals and performance on next-gen hardware. Some games previously only playable at 30fps will even be unlocked to play at 60 or even 120fps. Through this, “thousands” of games, both new and old, will be playable on the Series X at launch.

Xbox has announced the launch of a family settings app covering the main safety features available in its ecosystem, such as managing screen time and creating content filters.
It's available now in public preview for all Android users, as well as 10,000 iOS users -- the restricted number is due to Apple's TestFlight rules. More features will be added later in the year when it fully launches.
"It's an important and exciting step for us," corporate vice president of Xbox Operations Dave McCarthy tells GamesIndustry.biz during a presentation demoing the app. "This is an area that's near and dear to my heart, and the introduction of this app is just another step in our journey around responsible gaming and giving our players -- in this case parents and kids -- some added tools that they can use to manage their online experience.""The introduction of this app is just another step in our journey around responsible gaming"
This is part of ongoing efforts from Xbox to develop both its safety settings for families, but also their accessibility. The platform holder released an Xbox Family Guide around Christmas 2018, and made its safety settings available on Android through its Microsoft Launcher app in late 2019. McCarthy also touched upon these topics in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz last year.
The new app feels like the natural next step in presenting these settings in a user-friendly manner, accessible for even tech-averse parents and guardians. It also helps raise awareness that gaming can be part of a healthy family life.
"[We have] over 20 features now," McCarthy says. "You can manage purchased content, screen time, put content filters, manage your privacy and communication. Some of that surfaces in the app.

Fortnite will be available to play at launch for both next-generation consoles, Epic Games has confirmed.
The developer and engine provider made the announcement alongside the debut of Unreal Engine 5, which was showcased with a tech demo built to demonstrate PlayStation 5 gameplay.
Epic has emphasised that this will not be a new Fortnite, but a version of the current battle royale game "optimised to take advantage of the new hardware and features on next-gen consoles."
More details on what these optimisations include will be released closer to launch. Both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are currently due to be released by the end of the year.
Epic also clarified that the PS5 and Series X versions of Fortnite will initially be powered by Unreal Engine 4, same as the other editions on current platforms.
The company plans to migrate the game to Unreal Engine 5 in mid-2021.
Accounts will carry over and Epic will continue supporting the development of Fortnite for current-gen devices.

Xbox and Ubisoft have appeased disappointed fans following a livestream promising the first "gameplay" reveals for the Xbox Series X.
The stream, which happened on May 7, was teased by Microsoft a week in advance, with the explicit promise of next generation gameplay footage from third-party studios.
However, while the stream did showcase 13 games that will be on Xbox Series X, watching fans were critical of the apparent lack of promised gameplay footage.
As Eurogamer noted, the video attracted 34,000 dislikes, and the comments were crowded with complaints about the abundance of trailers assembled from cinematic cut-scenes.
"Had we not said anything and just shown May Inside Xbox show like we did last month, I suspect reactions might have been different," general manager of Xbox Games Marketing Aaron Greenberg said on Twitter.
"Clearly we set some wrong expectations and that's on us. We appreciate all the feedback and can assure you we will take it all in and learn as a team."
The content of the stream was kept a secret, except for one game: Assassin's Creed Valhalla, which was confirmed as part of the showcase when it was revealed by Ubisoft earlier in the week.
