Microsoft's next-generation home console has been designed to use wireless controllers by default, according to online reports which have been confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz this morning by developers working on titles for the system.[br][br]British technology news site The Inquirer reported yesterday that the new console will sport controllers very similar to the current Controller S design, but using wireless rather than wired connections to the console.[br][br]Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz this morning, developers working with prototype Xbox 2 hardware confirmed that while they have not seen final designs for the controller, Microsoft representatives have indicated that the pads will indeed be wireless.[br][br]A number of questions are raised by the decision to use wireless peripherals - most obvious being whether the pads will continue to support battery-draining rumble functions, and if they will be rechargeable or simply rely on replaceable AA batteries.[br][br]Microsoft will be the first console manufacturer to ship wireless pads as standard with its hardware, but not the first to ship an official wireless controller; Nintendo has already enjoyed significant success with the WaveBird, its wireless pad for the GameCube.

In a demonstration of its commitment to consumer safety, Microsoft today announced that it will voluntarily replace the power cords on some 14.1 million Xbox consoles worldwide after sporadic reports of electrical component failures that might constitute a fire hazard.[br][br]"This is a preventative step we’re choosing to take despite the rarity of these incidents," Microsoft's Robbie Bach commented. "We regret the inconvenience, but believe offering consumers a free replacement cord is the responsible thing to do."[br][br]Microsoft released the following statement clarifying the nature of the problem:[br][br]"Fewer than one in 10,000 consoles have experienced these component failures, and in almost all instances, any damage caused by these failures was contained within the console itself or limited to the tip of the power cord at the back of the console.[br][br]"However, in 30 consoles worldwide, these failures are reported to have caused minor injury or minor property damage. In seven instances, customers reported sustaining a minor burn to their hand. In 23 instances, customers reported smoke damage, or minor damage to a carpet or entertainment centre.[br][br]"In all regions except Continental Europe, Xbox consoles manufactured before 23rd October, 2003 require a replacement power cord. In Continental Europe, consoles manufactured before 13th January, 2004 require a replacement power cord."[br][br]Customers should go to www.xbox.com, Microsoft said, and click the "Power Cord Replacement for Xbox" link to fill out an order form. Replacement cords will take two to four weeks to arrive, and prior to their arrival customers are advised to switch their consoles off at the mains when not in use. The company has also set up freephone telephone numbers for people who cannot use the web - 0800 028 9276 in the UK, and 1800 923947 in the Republic of Ireland.[br][br]"Not all replacement cords that Microsoft supplies to program participants will look the same. Which type of cord is shipped will depend on the date the console was manufactured and the country where it is used," the statement added.

Big bad Steve "I LOVE THIS COMPANY!" Ballmer, Microsoft's CEO and skilled motivational speaker from the David Brent School of Dance and Embarrassing Enthusiasm, has spoken of how Xbox 2 is an "amazing innovation."[br]Speaking to a bunch of schoolkids attending a visit to Microsoft's sprawling Redmond, Washington State headquarters, Ballmer got all worked about how amazing Xbox 2 is going to be: "When you see the new Xbox, you're going to think it's - well, let me say it politely - unbelievable. Just unbelievable. The graphics, what it can do, the way things look, we're talking huge innovation."[br][br]When asked how Xbox 2 would shape up against Sony's PS3 and Nintendo's Revolution, Ballmer responded emphatically. "I think we're going to blow by Sony with our next Xbox, he said. "At the moment there's Sony, there's Nintendo, and there's us. When we get Xbox 2 in the market, there's going to be Xbox and 'the other guys'."[br]Ballmer also made a few suggestions about the type of game we can expect on Xbox 2. "We have to make sure we have a great software environment for people to write games, games that connect to one another, games that are social and games that are hardcore. We've got to make sure we let people write great games."[br][br]What kind of great game? "What is Halo 2?" asked Ballmer. "It's the greatest video game ever written. We've got some more games coming that will be the greatest video games ever written, and they'll show off Xbox 2." [br][br]Is that a clue that Halo 3 is headed for Xbox 2? It would make sense, especially since it looks increasingly likely that Xbox 2 will be available before the end of this year.[br][br]Ballmer rounded off his discussion with a teasing nod to Xbox 2's rumoured unveiling at E3. "Rumours are that we'll see that product sometime soon. I couldn't comment, of course, on those rumours. But it's an amazing, amazing innovation."[br][br]So while we're no further forward with concrete info on Xbox 2 at least we can rest safe in the knowledge that Steve Ballmer thinks it's going to be the nuts. [br][br]Why should you trust him? Because this man is a genius who will forever live in our fondest memories for this performance at a Microsoft corporate event. What a guy.[br][br]More Xbox 2 news soon.

While internet news sources today have reported that Microsoft is readying to launch its next generation Xbox hardware in America and Europe in the fourth quarter of this year, Eurogamer has learnt that the specific timing for the machine's roll-out is late October or early November, and merely weeks after the US launch. The exact date is yet to be solidified.[br][br]Speaking under conditions of strict anonymity, senior American and British development, publishing and retail sources have confirmed the launch window in the past weeks.[br][br]It is also now widely known among British sources that Microsoft UK is currently in the planning stages of a spectacular and unprecedented launch event in central London for the winter release.[br][br]While it has been accepted for some time that Xbox 2, currently codenamed Xenon, would be released in America before the end of the year, the news of a Q4 launch in both the UK and Europe will send shockwaves through the industry and gaming community on this side of the Atlantic.[br][br]Many have expressed concern that Microsoft is forcing the next generation of console hardware too early, and that the current generation still has much to achieve. The most famous example of this came from then Nintendo of Europe MD David Gosen speaking at an ELSPA summit in London last October, where he lambasted Microsoft for pushing a next generation machine to market in 2005, and even went so far as to question Microsoft's motivation as profit. [br][br]"In every cycle, some manufacturer not profiting from the current cycle is eager to kick-start the next one," he said at the time.[br][br]EA recently confirmed that next generation Xbox titles would ship alongside current generation offerings later this year, although the certainty of a European release this side of 2006 has been muted: until now.[br][br]Microsoft has already publicly snubbed the suggestion of Xbox 2 being shown for the first time at GDC in March, and it now seems obvious that E3 will see the grand unveiling of the machine.[br][br]A Microsoft spokesman characteristically swatted away any next gen talk: "Microsoft has not made any announcements regarding the next generation. We are currently very focused on further building the success of the Xbox console today and are not speculating on timing for a future version."[br][br]However, it must be noted that with the current lack of Xbox console stock still proving to be a huge problem for retailers and the future Xbox first party release schedule having almost completely dried up, it's an interesting comment for Microsoft to make at the point when every publisher and their dog are busy leaking Xbox 2 software information.

What we knew: Microsoft is wrapping up with the Xbox 360, that it would be out in late 2005, and they want it out by the Christmas season. So when Eurogamer learned and apparently confirmed the European Xbox 360 release would be in “late October or early November” and it would be a couple weeks after the US release, none of us around the office at Engadget HQ were exactly floored or anything. Interestingly, however, GamesIndustry seems to also think that Microsoft, who looked past introducing the Xbox 360 at GDC this month is probs going to announce it at E3 this year; as usual, we’ll be there with, er, press badges on.[br][br]

Until Microsoft makes their official announcement on it, this one is still firmly in the rumor category, but we’ve gotten word from one of our trusted sources that Microsoft has pretty much settled on a name for the next Xbox: the Xbox 360 (let that sink in for a moment, because you’re probably going to be hearing it a lot for the next several years). Our source, who has worked on several projects involving the Xbox and the Xbox 360, has seen the proposed packaging and other design elements for the new console, and says that as of right now the console is being branded as the “Xbox 360”. That’s definitely not that first time we’ve heard that mentioned as one of the possible names for the next-generation Xbox; last year a marketing firm conducted a survey where they asked people whether they thought Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or Nintendo N5 sounded more “next-gen” (apparently Microsoft was worried that calling their new console the “Xbox 2” would make it seem older or less “cutting-edge” than the PlayStation 3).

Microsoft has finally gone on record to confirm that the Xbox 2, or Xenon as it has now been codenamed, won't be appearing at this year's GDC.[br]Although we've received strong hints on this in recent weeks, it seems MS is going to keep its powder dry and save all its efforts up for a big push at E3, where it will finally unveil the next generation system. [br][br]There's been an abundance of rumour and speculation surrounding the unveiling of the console, with first Bill Gates' appearance at CES in early January first touted, and then next month's Game Developer Conference offered as possible Xenon debuts. [br][br]March's GDC was widely fancied, particularly given Xbox guru J Allard's a keynote speaker, MS's promise to be first to market and that the original Xbox was launched five years ago at the very same show. However, speaking to Reuters, an MS spokewoman finally confirmed that it was not to be so.[br]So by a process of elimination that should just leave E3, unless MS have a major pre-show coup up its sleeve, which given their gazillions of cash dollars you certainly can't rule out.[br][br]But it now looks like it's going to be a straight three-way shoot out between Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo as Xenon, PS3 and Revolution all launch with one almighty clash. [br][br]Amidst the blood and thunder, we'll be there to bring you the full story.

Xbox 2 - or Xenon as we should now properly call it - is drawing ever closer with the first public showing rumoured to be either March's GDC (less likely on the form book if the current rumour mill is to be believed) or more likely the big jamboree that is E3 in May.[br]With the smart money now on a release before Christmas 2005, it's no surprise to find that major publishers are already up to their armpits in plans for the launch of Bill's big - though apparently not black - box, part two.[br][br]Well, following news of EA's plan for Need For Speed: Most Wanted and a host of other launch titles, news comes to us today of Activision's plans for the Xbox part deux.[br][br]Speaking on condition of strict anonymity, a well placed source confessed to us that he has received information on the following list of Activision games which are slated for Xbox 2. Hold your breath Xbox fans, cos here we go:[br]Quake 4[br]Tony Hawk's Underground 3[br]Ultimate Spiderman[br]Call of Duty 2[br][br]When we put this to an Activision spokesperson, he said: "We have absolutely no comment to make on Xbox 2 titles." [br][br]So while it's difficult to be 100 per cent sure of the info, we think the tip certainly has the ring of authenticity. Our source also suggest that the titles are currently pegged to retail at $59.99, which if a little steep, certainly bears out remarks from leading industry figures that next generation games will force you to dig deeper into your pockets.[br][br]Viewed objectively, all four titles are continuations of major franchises which Activision would be almost insane not to launch onto next-generation consoles.[br][br]Look at that line-up and think how saucy it would be to find Quake 4 as a launch title, backed up Call of Duty 2, THUG 3 and one of the biggest sellers of last year, Spider-Man.[br][br]An A-list line-up like that from a major publisher like Activision will also certainly add even more weight to Microsoft's arm if, as our source suggests, they'll be ready for the Xbox Xenon's launch.[br][br]More on this one as we have it, but remember where you read it first.

January 28th, 2005, 22:03 Posted By: wraggster
Second quarter financial results from software giant Microsoft have seen the Home and Entertainment Division, which is responsible for the Xbox, posting a profit for the first time as sales rocketed.[br][br]The division announced a profit of $84 million on sales of $1.41 billion for the three months ended December 31st, reversing a loss of $397 million on sales of $1.27 billion in the same period last year.[br][br]Although it still remains unlikely that the Xbox will ever break even overall, given the scale of losses in its life to date, achieving a profitable quarter is a huge milestone for Microsoft and reflects both the huge success of Halo 2, which has racked up $300 million in revenue since its launch, and the strong hardware sales of the platform during the holiday season.[br][br]Microsoft's figures reveal that 19.9 million Xboxes have now been sold, with the lion's share - some 13.2 million - of those in North America, where the platform has improved its year-on-year market share in for the past 14 months consecutively.[br][br]Europe lags far behind with five million consoles sold, while the Asia-Pacific region manages just 1.7 million consoles, giving a clear indication of where Microsoft's games strategy has been a success - and where there is still much to be done to shift Sony and even Nintendo from their market positions.[br][br]Interestingly, the Xbox worldwide figure isn't that far ahead of Nintendo's GameCube figures, which were announced earlier this week and showed total shipments of about 18.8 million units, and with the Xbox achieving a 7.7 attach rate in North America (believed to be lower elsewhere) compared to the Cube's global attach rate of over 8, software sales across the two platforms in this generation have probably been broadly similar.[br][br]Microsoft's achievement in terms of bringing in a profitable quarter for its console was lauded by outgoing CFO John Connors, who commented that "Home and Entertainment has really turned the corner in all respects - Halo 2 and Xbox Live have been remarkable, exceeding our expectations."[br][br]"More Xbox consoles were sold during the critical holiday season in the United States than any of our competitors' consoles," he continued. "Demand was so great that we nearly made our full-fiscal-year console target six months ahead of schedule."[br][br]In terms of future projections, Microsoft expects to hit 21 to 22 million installed units of the Xbox by the end of its financial year in June, with Xbox Live subscription numbers of 1.6 to 1.8 million users in the same timescale - an estimate which has been raised from the original target of 1.5 million.

While it seems that Sony, Toshiba and IBM are about to unveil a whopping 4.6 Ghz processing chip for PS3, we've been rather left in the dark as to the computing muscle that'll benchpress heavy chunks of code in Microsoft's Xbox 2.[br]But we do know graphics tech firm ATI has signed to work on the next-gen beast's chips, so every little nugget of news concerning the company twitches our speculation nerve.[br][br]Well, here's something that should make your brain melt and dribble out of your ears like pink pus. ATI has filed a patent that could possibly, maybe, potentially have something to do with the chip technology planned for Xbox 2 - if only we could work out what it means.[br][br]Tech website The Inquirer uncovered the patent, which describes a "Method and apparatus for determining a processing speed of an integrated circuit". That's the idea, here's a sample line from the explanation of the idea: "a first flip flop having an input port receiving an input signal, an output port providing a flip flop output signal and a timing port receiving an incoming clock signal."[br][br]As far as we're concerned flip-flops are those scabby slabs of foam that keep your stinking feet cool in summer, but we're informed that in the technical sense they're actually transistors, the basic building blocks of circuits. Does that help?[br][br]Even The Inquirer is flummoxed, although it speculates that the patent suggests ATI are working to get standard processing working on the same chip as dynamic logic - a more complicated processing procedure that operates at much higher speeds. The patent could describe a system to switch speeds between these two processing modes. Which is evidently a good thing as it enables more calculations to be done quicker, resulting in graphics so detailed, smooth and fast that they'll destroy your soul.[br][br]But, to be honest, we've consulted our tech experts and they're not convinced that the patent describes anything of much interest. So we're throwing this riddle open. If you've got a degree in Complicated Computer Technology Jargon Smashing from the University of Massive Brains, you can find the full text of the patent here . Decipher it and tell us what it means in the forums below. Thanks.[br][br]More Xbox 2 news soon. And hopefully it'll make sense next time.

GamesIndustry.biz has news of EA's Xbox 2 plans for 2005, adding additional weight to the likelyhood of a new console by the end of the year. Oddly, the story states that the games in the works for the new console will also be developed for the current iteration of the Xbox. This may partially confirm the lack of backwards compatibility discussed previously on Slashdot and seems to pit Microsoft's new console against the old one for sales dollars.

Forza MotorSports info
i just wanted to give out some of the latest and up-to-date news about Forza that have been found by a few members on a few Forza websites.
Forza Motorsport "Official" Car List
Forza Motorsport "Official" Track Listing
Demo Content (Car's and Tracks)
Forza videos, see the game in action
Forza Demo on the way to you
Fprza gameplay and replay screens
This is just for the Fans of Forza, I’m trying to get the world out about the game and from what i have seen on the web not many people know what the game is about, most people just think it will be another racer like Gran-Turismo so I would like to further inform you about Forza.
Forza Motorsports will be a real racing simulator that will debut sometime in February, it will have over 200 cars that all take damage and are all fully customizable. The cars will take visual damage as well as performance damage; the forzacentral ForzaPlanet and the norm302.forzaplanet.com team have all found a lot of information on the game. There will be car clubs on the game via Xbox live; you will be able to paint your own car with 100 available layers (Moto GP 2 only had 7 layers and people where able to reproduce many beer labels and some outstanding logos with just 7 layers). You will be able to take a stock car and add body kits, turbos, switch engines from another car, add various types of rear & front spoilers (taken from rear world companies) and new rims. Since Forza is trying to be the most realistic racer ever created all of these parts where taken from real world aftermarket parts manufactories, everything you add to you car will effect how you she handles. So, if your nice spinier rims are two heavy, look for you car to feel more sluggish in the curves and your 0-60 time to drop off some.
The team at www.Forzacentral.com have found out that single player is only half of what this game has to offer. When you go online via Xbox live you will be able to trade, cars trade paint jobs and make user clubs with up to 100 members. As of right now the game will; have 200+ cars and over 40 tracks both real world and fictional tracks.
a few links to get more information on Forza as well as where to find more media on Forza
www.Forzaplanet.com

Ps this isn’t spam and I will back to give info to anyone that wants to know anything about Forza so ask anything you would like to know about the game and I will answer the question or direct you in the right place to get the answer. Thanks xbox3365 and enjoy the rest of your Saturday.

Microsoft's next-generation Xbox console, whether it will be dubbed 'Xbox 2' or 'Xbox Next', is going to ship late 2005, according to reports citing what's alleged to be a press released that leaked out of games publishing giant Electronic Arts.[br][br]Games site Spong this week received a copy of an as-yet-unpublished announcement of EA's game Need for Speed: Most Wanted. The title's due to ship late 2005.[br][br]And so, it seems, is the Xbox 2. According to EA's blurb, the game will be available for all the usual suspects but crucially a "simultaneous ship with the Xbox2 platform".[br][br]The implication is clear: the game will ship late 2005 and so with Microsoft's next-generation console.[br][br]It has been rumoured for some time that Microsoft will ship Xbox 2/Next later this year in a bid to grab the Christmas 2005 sales period for its own and steal a march on Sony's PlayStation 3, which isn't expected to arrive in the West before 2006, and Nintendo's upcoming 'Revolution', the successor to GameCube.[br][br]Of course, Spong's press release may yet prove a fake, or at least to have been doctored by the leaker to incorporate the Xbox 2 release timeframe. Or EA may be simply guessing.[br][br]Had Microsoft been planning a late 2005 release, some observers have argued, surely it would have announced the fact at the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show earlier this month? Bill Gates' keynote made no mention of the upcoming console - probably just as well when the featured Xbox experienced a blue-screen-of-death crash. All eyes will now turn to E3 in May, the key event at which MS could launch Xbox 2 - not least because Sony is likely to discuss PS3 there too.
