Sega's E3 presence was among the weakest at last week's event, trumped only by the pitiful showing at Camp Belmont, a notion not helped by the absence of Gearbox-developed Aliens: Colonial Marines from either the show floor or Sega's own booth. Videogamer.com cornered Gearbox president Randy Pitchford about the missing shooter, a no-show he blamed squarely on Sega's marketing strategy, adding that "the game is in great shape. People are going to freak out when they see it."
By people, he obviously didn't mean Sega's own marketing VP Sean Ratcliffe, who told us that while the publisher was considering showing the game at E3, Sega didn't feel that it was quite ready for prime time. "I think it needs a little more time before we want to put it in front of the press," the exec told us. He added that more news regarding the status of Aliens: Colonial Marines will be announced sometime after E3, though we continue to hope that Sega will release game as planned in late 2008 and not nuke the site from orbit.

There's been an understandable amount of excitement regarding the pseudo-sequel to 2007's "Game of the Year", Portal, following the E3 '08 unveiling of Portal: Still Alive. However, little was announced about the title by its digital anti-heroine at the Microsoft Press Conference -- luckily, Valve's Doug Lombardi spilled the beans about the game's new features, and its relationship to the first groundbreaking title, in a few interviews during last week's shenanigans.
In one such interview with GameSetWatch, Lombardi explained that Still Alive is a standalone version of the original Portal. The additional maps and challenges that were revealed on Gamerscore Blog will be pulled from the Portal: The Flash Game map pack, a 3D rendition of the award-winning web game based on the original pastry-rich puzzler. This map pack, lovingly crafted by We Create Stuff (the minds behind the Flash game), is available (and free) to download for PC portal-hoppers now.
Unfortunately, neither GlaDOS, nor any other "story elements", will be included in the extra content. As excited as we are for this expansion, the prospect of zipping around an abandoned research facility without the accompaniment of an unsettling, sing-song voice just doesn't seem right.

We had a lot of fun playing Fable 2 last night (more on that in a bit), so we were disappointed when we heard from several Lionhead staffers that the game's main story would take most around 12 hours to complete. It's not that we thought we were getting ripped off, after last night we just hoping the answer would be a little closer to a hojillion.
Also, keep in mind: That's just for the main story. That's not figuring in the time you'll spend gambling, romancing, trying to get fat and all the other side quests that make Fable so Fabley.

Fable II is due out exclusively on Xbox 360 this October.

Microsoft released its Q4 and FY 2008 earnings reports today, with the Entertainment and Devices Division reporting a USD 426 million profit over the year.
The division reported Q4 revenue of USD 1.575 billion - up 37 per cent from 2007 - but an overall operating loss of USD 188 million. For the same period of the prior year, the division reported a USD 1.223 billion operating loss.
Fiscal year 2008 revenue was up 34 per cent to USD 8.14 billion.
Microsoft attributed the revenue increase primarily to Xbox 360 platform sales. It shipped 1.3 million consoles during Q4, compared to 700,000 in Q4 of fiscal 2007.
The company also noted that the cost of revenue decreased 49 per cent due to the USD 1.1 billion charge it took in Q4 2007 related to the expansion of warranty coverage.
Overall, Microsoft reported USD 15.84 billion Q4 revenue, with operating income of USD 5.68 billion and diluted EPS of USD 0.46 - growth of 42 per cent and 48 per cent, respectively, over the same period of the prior year.
For the fiscal year, Microsoft announced revenue of USD 60.42 billion, an 18 per cent increase over the prior year and the fastest annual revenue growth since 1999 according to the company.
Operating income and diluted earnings per share for the year were USD 22.49 billion and USD 1.87, respectively. Microsoft noted that these growth rates were impacted by the USD 1.1 billion Q4 2007 charge related to the Xbox 360 warranty expansion.
For Q1, Microsoft expects revenue in the range of USD 14.7 - 14.9 billion, operating income in the range of USD 5.9 - 6 billion and diluted earnings per share of USD 0.47 or 0.48.
For FY 2009, Microsoft's management offered guidance of revenue in the range of USD 67.3 - 68.1 billion, operating income in the range of USD 26.3 - 26.9 billion and diluted EPS in the range of USD 2.12 - 2.18.

When it comes to porting Final Fantasy XIII to Xbox 360, Square's of the opinion that it's not the size of the disc that matters; it's how you use it. FFXIII producer Yoshinori Kitase says that his team will "work on trying to find ways to compress the pre-rendered movies and voice that take up a lot of data in ways that don't affect the final product."
Kitase is also looking to the arcane arts of graphics programming "to ensure that the quality [of in-game visuals] remains the same between the two versions," as well. We suggest he trademark the name "Squeaze" for whatever method the team eventually settles on for cramming a Blu-ray based game onto (a number of) DVDs. Such a catchy name will certainly make the tech more marketable to other developers bringing their PS3 exclusives to 360.

Rare wants Banjo-Kazooie to become an Xbox mascot in the vein of Mario, Lara Croft, Sonic and a Tetris Block (we ran out of mascots towards the end there), the developer has told CVG.
Speaking in an interview published today, on Banjo-Kazooie's 10th Birthday in Europe (raise your pint glasses), Rare studio head Mark Betteridge said that the new Banjo is a game the Xbox 360 "needs".
"We think the time is right for Banjo to be a mascot character for the 360, that's the key point," he said. "The price of the box is less than it was at launch, there are more casual customers buying consoles, so I think there's now a really good opportunity there. It's a unique game in the 360 line-up, it's a game that the 360 needs."
"Certainly as a mascot character Mario is fantastic and that would be wonderful to have Banjo mention in the same breath as 360 in way that Mario is with Nintendo," he added.
Should we expect to see Banjo Kart shortly, then? "We've used our characters in other games before with Nintendo," Betteridge added. "I suppose that's an historical skill of Rare's, to create likeable characters and characters that have proven to be popular worldwide."

There have been a bunch of rumours floating around that Ubisoft picked up the Armored Core baton after SEGA fumbled the release of Armored Core 4. Historically, Ubisoft are also a publisher that have had a decent relationship with From Software, as they published Armored Core 2 back in the day (in Europe) and more recently the Enchant Arm games.
Well, it seems that a few entrepreneurial staff at Wal-Mart have surreptitiously posted the release dates online. It seems that both the 360 and PS3 versions are scheduled for a US release on the 16th September this year. Despite the somewhat unfortunate name change; "Armored Core The Answer" will finally be gracing Western shores. Here's hoping that Ubisoft don't ruin the boxart like they did with Senko no Ronde and that the IGN, Gametrailers and 1up reviews evolve a clue prior to sitting down with the English version (as I've always thought that their previous "efforts" have been somewhat lacking, after all trying to play through the likes of Armored Core Last Raven with the starter config is forcibly facile).

Remember those old telephones that had the springy springy cable that would stretch out when you used it? Yeah, we didn't like them either. And we don't like it on the bass drum pedal of the Rock Band drum kit either. Using the Extense cable, you can have easier placement of the bass drum pedal on the stand, or move it off the stand, if you wish. Also included are 2 USB extension cords that can be used for the wired controllers, which allow you to have even more room to play.

From LA timesTurns out that Bungie's latest Halo project was originally part of the program for Microsoft's press conference on Monday, but it was taken out of the lineup at the last minute. Don Mattrick, senior vice president of Microsoft's Xbox games business, said the company decided to pull Halo ...
... to help trim its E3 presentation to under 90 minutes, from 2 1/2 hours, to accommodate attention-challenged reporters. "We had an embarrassment of riches," Mattrick said. "We felt we could do this game more justice with a more dedicated event."
So its seemed that with Microsoft's new focus on casual gamers, and the FFXIII announcement, Bungie's new secret (Halo) project did not make the cut......... (sorry I just lost my attention there)

One of the questions we've been hearing here at E3 is how existing themes you've bought from Xbox LIVE Marketplace will work with the new Xbox experience. The design team sent over this mock up to give you an idea of how it's going to work.
We've also been asked about the Game Detail Pages. Here are mock ups for a couple of them.

During an E3 appointment today, we confronted Scott Austin, Director of Digitally Distributed Games for Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade, about two controversial XBLA topics: delistings and delays.
Austin was dodgy, unfortunately. When asked when games might start disappearing from the service, he stayed mum, only saying that Microsoft wanted to "keep evolving and improving [its] content." We also asked for comment on the unofficial list of games that met the criteria for delisting, and he agreed that the list is accurate according to the criteria.
We also talked to Austin about the delays that Microsoft has made in releasing content, and he told us that Microsoft runs a very stringent QA process in addition to any processes the developers run for themselves. The largest part of these delays, he said, is "making sure the games we release are high quality" -- Microsoft runs every game through for bugs, and will then send back to the developers any game that has issues. When pressed for a percentage of games that are sent back for bugs, Austin told he us didn't have that information.

"Why does this work in Wal-mart" Marc Whitten asked, rhetorically. He's the General Manager for Xbox LIVE and the guy in charge of the new Xbox 360 dashboard system known as The New Xbox Experience. "Visual is a better way of exploring...you're actually good at discerning things visually." And if such is the case, it makes sense why Microsoft has ditched the endless lines of icons and text in their Xbox 360 setup, opting for a minimal experience not so different from Apple's Front Row.
The current Xbox 360 dash (the blade version) has a problem. While there is plenty of functionality under the hood, the development team can't simply add a new blade any time they wanted to bring new content. Meanwhile, Xbox LIVE hopes to bring users more dynamic content on a daily basis. Something had to give, so Microsoft ditched their dashboard.
"There's no reason we have to decide what we did originally was the right thing," Whitten explains.
Under the new dash, a simple list including categories like "Games" and "Video" will be maliable at any time without a firmware update. And, hopefully, users will also have an easier time discovering features like iPod support with larger, prettier icons and a simpler layout.
And so far, it's all looking pretty good—and very different from Sony's XMB, an interface that we're pretty fond of as well. So what's the one thing Whitten would change about Sony's system?
"I'd ask why some icons are 3D and colorful and others are 2D and dull."

We're loving the new 3D look of Street Fighter IV, but the real question that needs answering is if Chun Li's new 3D melons are as bouncy as Ivy's in Soul Calibur IV.
We know that the hardcore Street Fighter fans might be more concerned with things like jugglers, parries and throws. It certainly looks like it plays well, but we'll get to sample a near-final version very soon so we'll let you know.

The ongoing saga of Bungie's no-show at this year's E3 has been given another little twist, with Microsoft's Don Mattrick confirming that the now independent developer is indeed hard at work on another instalment in the Halo series.
Speaking to MTV Multiplayer, the head of Xbox business said that the amount of content in Microsoft's conference on Monday squeezed out any news on the extension of the Halo series, and said Bungie is actively working on a new game that is neither Halo Wars nor the awaited Peter Jackson project.
The news comes off the back of heightening speculation about Bungie's presence – or lack thereof – at this year's event, which climaxed in an open letter placed on the developer's website apologising for the no-show. Meanwhile, the countdown to its heavily touted announcement - which was expected to happen at 7:07am PST on July 16 - continues, though in light of the recent news many expect the deadline to pass without fanfare, or news of a fresh Halo title.
