News article from Lik Sang
RedOctane suprised everyone (not Lik-Sang though) with displaying a Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero II at the X06 showfloor recently. At the Microsoft event in Barcelona, Spain, the game was already fully playable with an unfinished gray and white Gibson X-plorer prototype guitar controller! Targeted at an early 2007 release, Guitar Hero II for Xbox 360 will apparently include all content from the PlayStation 2 version plus some neat extras on top. Downloadable content has been generally announced, without going into much detail at this point. There might be additional characters, backgrounds and guitars offered for free. Activision said that the game will also pack Achievements, but again, no further info on that just now. There also seems a good chance that online play might find its way into the game. Custom soundtracks seem unlikely, as RedOctane mentioned before that they won't permit downloadable songs, as not to compromise gameplay quality.
Still, exclusive extra songs that will be made available for download on Xbox Live Marketplace have apparently been confirmed. The guitar prototype seems rather unadorned yet, but the Gibson X-plorer shape sure is a winner. Early hopes for a wireless controller bit the dust already, RedOctane mentioned they'll go for a wired guitar only. Expect higher-res textures, some new characters (e.g. King Kendall and Judy Nails) and some online fluff for this Xbox 360 incarnation of Guitar Hero II.
Rock your PC good: Freetar Hero
Man, you just gotta love homebrew efforts. Particularly so, if it means you get a totally fresh additional features set and can play at absolutely no cost, as in the case of Anton Struyk's Freetar Hero project. Let us give you the glorious gist of it: the author relied on Java coding to expand on the Guitar Hero experience and bring it all to the PC. Taking this to the next level, Freetar comes in two parts: a game portion that's Java webbased and a powerful editor that allows players to create, edit and playback button timings for any song they have on their computer with any gamepad-like device they have connected to their PC. Yes, you heard that right! Supporting file formats MIDI, WAV, OGG, MP3 and WMV currently, you can play, pause, seek and slow down your songs in real-time while you edit, easily create songs, even record tracks! The game portion of Freetar gives you the opportunity to play user-created songs similarly to Guitar Hero. Anton seems in the process now of going the open source route for Freetar, which sure should speed up further improvements to an already fantastic achievement. Please check out the official Freetar Hero site for more info, free downloads and a lively user forum.
As with all rythm games, Freetar Hero is played best if you've got the right tools for the job. All you need to hook up your Guitar Hero SG controller to your PC is the (user recommended) SmartJoy Plus adapter, the perfect solution if you are looking for a high-quality PS/PS2 to USB connection. The affordable Rock Guitar for PS2 works great in combination with the SmartJoy Plus as well, in case you don't own an original SG. Get creative and strive to beat your own high scores on all your favorite songs!

$6000 bucks will buy you 80,000 points and the possibly the world's coolest Xbox rep... apparently
Some people will do anything to improve their Xbox Live Gamer score, and if yours is looking particularly paltry and feeble - and you have around $6000 bucks to spare - you can enhance your rep at a stroke by purchasing the Hard Disk with Gamer Tag Rance6 and the number one slot in the world, via online auction site eBay.
Follow this here link to see what the fuss is about, with Italian gamer Ashita apparently having put in around 5000 hours of gameplay and unlocked enough achievements to have made his eyes bleed and worn his arms down to little stumps.
Official reason for offloading the hard disk containing the ultra desirable number one slot? Well says Ashita, "I am selling cause PS3 coming out" (sic). Perhaps he hasn't heard of that little delay occurring here in Europe?
A hoax? A legitimate way to earn a little back from your many hours of Xbox 360 play or an expensive and underserved way to leap straight to the head of the Xbox leaderboards? We leave you, the jury, to

In a recent interview with trade mag MCV, Xbox UK Boss Neil Thompson has publicly questioned the clarity of Sony's marketing strategy for the PS3.
Thompson told MCV: "Sony itself doesn't seem to be sure of what it's offering; they don't seem to think of PS3 as a games console."
Elsewhere in the interview, Thompson discusses his confidence that Xbox 360 supplies will meet the high level of demand expected this Christmas, as Microsoft hopes to take full advantage of the PS3's delayed March release date in Europe

Giving us exactly what we were wishing for on a Monday morning, Tecmo has released nine new screenshots of the Xbox 360 game we're all secretly looking forward to; Dead or Alive Xtreme 2.
As you've probably already noticed, examined and made cubicle-sized printouts of, these latest shots show off DOA's cast of massive-breasted ladies in a number of suggestive poses, and there's also some bedroom pictures in there as well - you know, for interior design fans.
According to our lastest release list, DOAX2 is still dated for a vague "2006" release. We'll let you know how it turns out.

Activision has confirmed that a demo of Tony Hawk's latest skate 'em-up, Tony Hawk's Project 8 will be appearing on Xbox Live Marketplace "soon".
The news comes from a line of text on the game's official website, which reads: "Check out the playable demo on Xbox Live Marketplace".
The game itself promises new objectives like film and photo goals, an enhanced physics system and a new "impress the locals" function, where you can pull off tricks for civilians and gain yourself "respect." Excellent.
Look out for Tony Hawk's latest on Xbox 360 and virtually every brand of PlayStation this autumn.

Doom goes straight to number one in Arcade top ten
Activision title Call of Duty 2 for Xbox 360 is the most popular game on Xbox Live, according to the latest charts released by Microsoft's director of programming, Larry Hryb.
Hryb, who is better known to many as Major Nelson, has posted the latest charts on his blog, revealing that COD2 has reclaimed the top spot as Madden NFL 07 slips down into third place.
THQ's Saints Row is in second place, while BAFTA-award winning Ubisoft title Ghost Recon Advanced Warfare is in fourth.
At number five it's Test Drive Unlimited, followed by Xbox Live Arcade title Doom and Capcom's hit zombie shooter Dead Rising. Oblivion remains popular more than six months after release, holding on to eighth place, while Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is in ninth and the Sonic the Hedgehog demo rounds things off at number ten.
There's also been change at the top in the Xbox Live Arcade charts, which is based on full price purchases only. Doom has gone straight in at number one, leaving card games Texas Hold'em and Uno at two and three respectively.
Hexic HD is in fourth place, followed by TotemBall - a game specially designed to work with the new Xbox Live Vision camera. At six it's the ever-popular Geometry Wars Evolved, while Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting is at number seven and fellow retro favourite Pac-Man is at eight. Marble Blast Ultra and Bankshot Billiards 2 are at number nine and number ten.
When it comes to online play on the original Xbox, Halo 2 is still the most popular title - followed by Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, Madden NFL 07 and Counter-Strike. PES 5, Forza Motorsport and Star Wars: Battlefront 2 also make an appearance in the top ten, alongside two Rainbow Six titles and Splinter Cell Chaos.

AN INSURANCE COMPANY acting on behalf of Melvin Young has sued Microsoft because his house suffered an extensive fire because an Xbox malfunctioned on January 5th last year.
Allstate Insurance had an insurance policy in Young's name, and alleges the Xbox was "unreasonably dangerous" and was, defective, malfunctioned and caused smoke and fire damage in his house.
Allstate alleges Microsoft is responsible for all loss, damage and injury and was negligent in proving an Xbox with defects.
Allstate is demanding Microsoft shell out $250,000 to cover the insurance costs on the house. The case was filed in a circuit court for Prince George's County. An earlier case, linked below, was settled between the Weatherfords and Microsoft last year.

Microsoft continues its pre-Christmas retail drive as it teams up with specialist retailer Gamestation to kit out an entire floor dedicated to Xbox 360 and PC gaming.
Launching today at the flagship store in Birmingham, the Microsoft Underground X-perience offers wall-mounted HDTVs with 12 Xbox 360 units for multiplayer gaming instore, as well as connections to Xbox Live and an open and lively atmosphere to cultivate social gaming.
Although this is the first store of its kind in Europe, Gamestation MD Mike Logue confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that, "we would like to see this type of experience in several more cities," as the retailer comes out fighting after recent reinvestment from parent company Blockbuster, with the intention of opening another 80 stores in the next twelve months.
"We want to take games retail to the next level," said Logue.
"Consoles are an expensive product but we believe the 360 is value for money because of the technology and what it offers, the quality of the games. So come and try it. We're happy with consumers coming to spend an hour here and seeing what they can get out of the Xbox 360."
"In the major cities, I'd spend hours as a kid going to record shops and soaking up the atmosphere - it was cool to be seen there. That's what we're trying to do with Gamestation and gaming retail," he added.
As Microsoft continues its marketing push for the Xbox 360 in anticipation of a busy Christmas, the decision to back a company with 230 plus stores strengthens its commitment to the retail sector.
"At Microsoft we are always looking for new ways for our customers to interact with our products," said Jonathan Grimes, director of sales at Microsoft.
"Gamestation's flagship store in Birmingham is the ideal venue for Microsoft to showcase the amazing range of products we have to offer consumers."
"Together with Gamestation, Microsoft has created a truly unique interactive retail environment that allows us to communicate directly with gamers and provide them with an exciting space to enjoy the best we have to offer," he added.

Lost Planet is Keiji Inafune's answer to Halo, the Capcom producer has said.
Speaking to Kotaku recently, Inafune revealed that he originally pitched the game to Capcom bosses as his take on Bungie's seminal first-person shooter.
"I really wanted to do something as cool as Halo," he said. "I'm a big Halo fan, but it's not well known in Japan. It's very interesting, but very American."
Capcom, it turns out, wasn't interested on account of Halo's poor sales in Japan, so Inafune took matters into his own hands and simply set about making it - and taking the initiative paid off. "When we described the idea, we couldn't get approval. But, when we showed them what we were working on, we got approval."
But while the game - in which players take on giant bug-like creatures and space pirates in an icy wilderness - is certainly a reaction to Halo, Inafune added that the team "wanted to do something that had more of a Japanese flavour".
"That's why we added robots," he said. "In America, mech-type robots are not so cool. Just look at the mechs in The Matrix." Indeed.
As you'll know, the game's just now approaching completion - with a global launch set for January - and as well as a combat-heavy single-player campaign, Capcom's including a multiplayer component that received strong write-ups at recent trade shows. A demo of the single-player has been available since May, and a multiplayer demo is due out soon.

Dyack has explained why his long, long in the making action-RPG, Too Human, was absent from Microsoft's X06 last week, despite having been playable at E3 earlier in the year.
"This decision to not show at X06 was made immediately after E3," said Dyack, speaking on his blog. "We made the decision to next show the game when we are ready and we knew that X06 would not be the right time."
He continued: "When we do decide to show the game, our goal is to give everyone a true impression of the game -- one that includes story, audio, game play, artwork and technology. Things are going very well and Too Human is shaping up to be our best game to date."
Speculation was writhe after the game received a poor reception at this year's E3 (RIP), but Dyack promises it won't be long before we see it in action again: "Stay tuned because there will be a preview of the game in the future..."
Too Human is expected on Xbox 360 sometime next year.

Fresh from the loins of wherever BioWare's screenshots plop from, we've got four (count 'em; four) new shots of Mass Effect, a game we're looking forward to almost as much as that after-work pint waiting for us down the pub.
These latest images offer another glimpse of Mass Effect's off-world exploration and third-person combat, along with the gorgeous character models and facial animations that almost made us leave a small puddle on the E3 floor, earlier this year.
Mass Effect, all going well, will be out early next year.

Computing giant said to be on the verge of buying graphics manufacturer - what does this mean for PC gaming?
Computing giant Intel is said to be on the verge of acquiring graphics manufacturer nVidia, according to Reuters.
The report says rumours have "spread quickly across Wall Street trading desks"
and that speculation indicates Intel will make an acquisition announcement tonight.
This news comes hot on the heels of rival AMD's acquisition of nVidia's biggest competitor, ATI, in July, which gave the CPU manufacturer entry into the graphics market, and led many to call Intel to secure a similar deal.
If true, this could be fantastic news for PC gaming, as many high-profile industry figures - most notable of whom is Epic's Mark Rein - have condemned Intel for including only inferior integrated graphics chips with its PCs, which according to Rein hurts the marketplace and gives people "machines that are completing incapable of playing games."
For the moment we'll have to wait and see if the Wall Street rumours come true.

Single-player 360 demo heads to Marketplace on October 23
The single-player demo will allow players to shoot their way through the stunning-looking Dante's Casino stage, on the hunt for suspected terrorist leaders.
This is great news for fans of the squad-based tactical shooting series, and anyone waiting to see what their next-gen powerhouse is really capable of.
Gameplay trailers so far have looked absolutely incredible, and we fully expect this to be one of the best shooters on Xbox 360 to date.
The full game will be released for Xbox 360, PC and PSP in Autumn 2006, with a PS3 version targeting Sony's March 07 launch.
