We're all prepping our Claims Direct forms this morning, as Sega makes us fall out of our wheelie-chairs with the reveal of the Phantasy Star Universe beta, available for free download now on Xbox Live.
In case you missed the last instalment, Phantasy Star Universe is an online co-op adventure where six-man squads go around blasting at various nasties in a real-time combat setup.
This time around there's also a single-player adventure with over 40 hours of promised gameplay - although we're assuming the solo mode isn't in this beta, but we'll have to get back to you on that one after we've managed to rig it up ourselves.
The beta version will be available for download until October 15, and playable until the 18th of the same month. Additionally, Sega says the Guadian license - which will unlock all of the online shenanigans in the game - will be available for £6.99 from November 24.
Look for our Phantasy Star Universe impressions very soon - we're already preparing to sprint to the 360.

Talken from an gizmodo.com article "Microsoft and Toshiba demo the Xbox 360 HD DVD and 2nd Gen HD DVD Players"
Some things I found out, and can talk about is the 360 HD-DVD drive can be plugged into a PC and it will be recognized as an optical drive, but will not play HD-DVD movies. I asked what if you have the proper HD-DVD software on the PC, to that [redacted] said that he didn't know, it hadn't been tried yet- maybe there's something there...
Source: gizmodo.com
Does this mean if someone does develop the software, there could be a very cheap HD-DVD player for the P.C. ?

The Xbox 360 nabbed a Good Design 2006 award (yeah, it was released in 2005, so what?). The console was designed by Astro Studio and hot Japanese designer Chiaki Murata and is a tremendous step up from that awful black doormat Microsoft released a few years back. The award was given by Japan's "Good Design Council," started back in 1957 and has the sole purpose to find "excellent design products, which encourage the contribution to the quality of life and industrial field via power of design." Okay.
The criteria for winners were three basic questions:
1. Is it a good design?
2. Is it a superior design?
3. Is it a design that breaks new ground for the future?
So Japan may hate the Xbox 360, but that doesn't mean it hates the Xbox 360. It obviously likes the way the machine looks. On store shelves, for example.

Electronic Arts' FIFA Interactive World Cup is to receive a boost with a USD $20,000 (EUR 15,900) cash prize going to the winner - the first time the company has offered a financial incentive to consumers to enter the annual competition.
A series of qualifying matches will be held across the globe in locations such as Brazil, Denmark, Spain and Germany, with the final held in Amsterdam on December 9th.
"We're really excited to be part of the FIFA Interactive World Cup 2006 exclusively bringing next-generation high-definition football gaming action to players across the globe with FIFA 07," said Richard Teversham, head of marketing at Xbox Europe.
"It's great to be hosting the connected gaming tournaments on Xbox Live giving our three million members worldwide the chance be part of this great competition and take on their friends," he added.

News from Lik Sang
At Epic, they are whipping the Unreal Engine 3 hard right now. There is much at stake with their current, overly ambitious third-person tactical shooter for Xbox 360, Gears of War. Mark Rein, Epic Games' vice-president mentioned recently, that production costs will be in the US$ 10 million range. Whatever footage, screenshots or gameplay details from the title has been released so far is well pointing to one of the best games of 2006 and a truly next-gen effort at that. See, giving Gears of War good press seems almost too easy. Speaking atmosphere, think Doom 3 meets Warhammer 40k, where game mechanics are much about teamwork. All stages, chapters in the storyline and game modes have been designed to encourage co-op play, either with A.I. buddies or human brothers in arms. Multiplayer via Xbox Live awaits, while story mode dumps gamers into an intriguing tale with more than one dark twist, a saga of humankind's fight for naked survival against the Locust Horde, a race with a "Seek and Destroy" mindset that surfaces from inside the ill-fated planet Sera. With probably the best visuals on the console seen so far on top, Gears of War is the reason you bought a 360. In case you don't own the system yet, it's time to reconsider.
Gears of War will ship on November 12th for only US$ 69.90, qualifying for our Free Shipping Worldwide promotion, which is available for all import games on Lik-Sang.com. Rightfully selected as Microsoft's flagship title currently, which might be powerful enough to take on Wii and PS3 launches single-handedly. Don't miss out, is our recommendation.

Microsoft has launched a new website that lets you literally 'browse' Xbox Live Marketplace on your PC, without going anywhere near the 360's oversized, green power button.
Xbox Live Pipeline lets you browse all of Microsoft's downloadable goodies, such as demos, videos and themes and other downloadable content. Although you obviously can't buy anything on the website, it's much easier to browse than Xbox 360's interface.
Pipeline is the first step towards Microsoft's much-touted Live Anywhere service revealed at this year's E3, which will allow you to trigger downloads on your Xbox 360 from your phone or PC.
We're still waiting, but hopefully Live Anywhere will turn up in time for Windows Vista early next year.

id Software - that of Doom and Wolfenstein 3D fame - is looking to bring more of its retro backlog to Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade, after the recent release of its classic shooter, Doom on the service.
"We're looking at bringing some of the other games to XBLA, but a lot is going to depend on the response to DOOM," said id CEO Todd Hollenshead, speaking to Firing Squad. "From what MS tells us, it's been fantastic so far, which bodes well for other id 'classics' to be released there. But there's nothing concrete," he added.
Excellent news for shooter fans then. A quick poll around the office heads politically incorrect blaster, Shadow Warrior and Quake II multiplayer as top-canditates for Live Arcade re-jiggering, but as Hollenshead notes, id's keeping its own selections top-secret: "Making the surprise announcement at X06 for DOOM worked out great, so I'll be tight lipped about anything specific for now

An update to GearsofWar.com features grainy security camera footage of lead character and disgraced former hero Marcus Fenix confined to a cell, while disturbing noises slip out your speakers. 'Eh, what?', you ask. Well, it's part of a series of planned flashback videos hitting the site that flesh out the background to various aspects of Gears of War's main storyline, you see.
Apparently, we'll also see the "uniquely destroyed beauty of the games environment" highlighted in due course too, Microsoft has informed us.
Hitting Europe on November 12, Gears of War is one of this Christmas' hot properties and finds players fighting a nightmarish race of creatures called the Locust Horde in an effort to save mankind. The game blends tactical action with survival horror, and we're crossing fingers here at CVG that it doesn't disappoint.

It's been over twenty years since Al Pacino, Oliver Stone, and Brian DePalma gave us one of Hollywood's classic crime lords (and set the benchmark for f-bomb usage in a film). Given Rockstar's success with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, it's not surprising that someone decided to cash in on the original coked out vision of 80s Miami. Enter Sierra and Radical Entertainment's Scarface: The World is Yours, an extension of the movie that finds Tony Montana very much alive and out for revenge on the cock-a-roaches who destroyed his drug empire. Reviews suggest that the amount of enjoyment you get out of this game will depend on your patience with its mission structure. Tony doesn't break his balls for anyone, but some of the side missions in Scarface just might break yours.
IGN (87/100) thought Tony's rage mode was the balls: "By performing a number of 'ballsy' moves, you'll fill the Balls meter. Targeting certain body parts (kidney, head, arms, groin, etc.) will earn you Balls, and taunting someone after you kill them will earn you even more. It's a great system that works almost flawlessly."
Game Informer (85/100) felt immersed in the power struggles of a drug kingpin: "Unlike Grand Theft Auto, in which you're frequently at the mercy of powers much greater than yourself, Scarface allows you to blaze your own path to greatness. The epic scope and the sheer amount of money at stake give Scarface a sense of urgency that few games in this genre have achieved."
GameSpot (64/100) was looking for more freedom of movement: "The developers accomplished the task of bringing Tony Montana back to life. But by taking the focus off of the gameplay elements that you'd want in an open-city game and putting it more on the game's bland mission design and all the dull side tasks you'll have to do to earn a reputation, Scarface doesn't play to its potential strengths."

Source: Straight out of the Xbox Live Pipeline, a Microsoft-owned Flash-based site.
What we heard: Back in August, unconfirmed warnings were issued that Microsoft might charge people money to advance in Q Entertainment's upcoming Xbox Live Arcade title, Lumines Live! Earlier today, it appeared those reports might have been totally off base, as Microsoft's Xbox Live Pipeline site had a listing for Lumines Live! that indicated the game itself was "FREE."
But just as the pitchforks and torches were being put away, GameSpot editors noticed the site also gave Lumines Live ! the rarely seen rating of EC for Early Childhood. While a toddler could possibly come of age in the time it takes a game of Lumines to ramp up in difficulty, this sounded a little suspect. It was especially suspicious given that the Entertainment Software Rating Board gave the original Lumines (which unlike the Xbox 360 version does not feature video of Madonna undulating in the background), a more restrictive rating of E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older.
An inquiry to Microsoft yielded answers to all our questions.
The official story: "The information posted about Lumines Live on XboxLivePipeline.com is inaccurate and we apologize for any confusion. Lumines will be available later this fall on Xbox Live Arcade and more details will be shared closer to its launch. However, the title will not be free and the rating is still pending."--A Microsoft spokesperson.
Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus. Keep the pitchforks at the ready.

The onslaught of arcade games on Xbox Live Arcade continues tonight, as Namco's cabinet classic Dig Dug debuts on the online service as part of Xbox Live Arcade Wednesdays.
Beginning at 1 a.m. on October 11, gamers can download the game for 400 Marketplace points ($5). The new game comes with the requisite "enhanced graphics," HD support in 720p and 480p, a dozen achievements to earn, and online leaderboards.
Dig Dug sees gamers digging into the earth to eliminate enemies, armed only with a pump. The objective of the game is to clear each board of enemies by shooting them with a harpoon and inflating them until they explode. Dig Dug can also cause rocks to fall and crush multiple bad guys for bonus points.

Gears of War will ship with ten multiplayer maps, Cliff Blezsinski has revealed, as rumours spread that a demo might turn up within the next 48 hours. Very shaky rumours, mind you.
On the former point, first, the note about multiplayer maps came on Epic's official forum. "Turns out we ARE shipping with 10 versus maps," the designer wrote. They were saying eight previously to be "on the safe side" apparently.
As for the demo rumours - what's concrete is that a website called "48hrsexclusiveaccess" has been linked through from emails sent to official mailing list subscribers, with a message coded into the body-copy that reads, "Marcus Fenix has been located. You have 48 hours to mobilise." Hence the guestimation.
What you get on the site is interesting enough in itself though - the idea is that you're Marcus Fenix, in his prison cell, with three matches to wave around the darkened walls locating links to videos. These offer some hints at the game's back-story, how humanity thought it was saved only for the Locusts to turn up, and how grisly it gets as the people of Sera try to deal with the horde after Emergence Day.
Speaking of which, Gears of War is of course out on 12th November in the US, and 17th November in Europe.

360 owners who want to take Phantasy Star Universe for a free demo spin will be in luck starting later this week week, when Sega will launch a free, open beta. Starting October 11th, players can download PSU directly through their Xbox Live Gold account and play the open beta until the 18th.
It's going to be a huge download though: the open beta will literally involve downloading the whole game. Possibly to cut down on the bandwidth, Sega is only allowing people to download the beta on the 11th and 12th.

A decade and change ago there were two fighting franchises duking it out for supremacy at the arcades: Midway's Mortal Kombat and Capcom's Street Fighter. Earlier this year, it was revealed that installments from both series would be released for the Xbox 360 on Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade service.
In August, Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting was released after fans were made to endure multiple delays. Meanwhile, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 has yet to be delayed, possibly because it has never had a release date any more exact than "by the end of the year." With 2006 heading into the home stretch, Midway has finally narrowed that window down a bit.
Midway today announced that Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 would be available in November, completing a four-hit combo that also consists of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox editions of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon (being released this week and next, respectively) and the series' PSP debut, Mortal Kombat: Unchained. Midway has not announced a price for the game yet.

Two important parts of Microsoft's strategy for revitalizing Xbox 360 sales in Japan are making the system more attractive price-wise and providing games that appeal to Japanese gamers.
To that end, the Xbox 360 Core System Blue Dragon Premium Pack marries these two aspects into one bundle. For the same price as a Core System on its own, the package provides a Xbox 360 Core System with Blue Dragon, the high-profile Japanese role-playing game by Final Fantasy series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi (with character designs by Manga legend Akira Toriyama). The bundle costs about 29,800 yen, or around $250.
Now, Microsoft Japan has announced there will be a limited first edition run of the Blue Dragon bundle. The first purchasers of the bundle--those who preorder it--will receive two special items. One is a set of five miniature figures and the second is an original Blue Dragon faceplate based on a design by Toriyama himself.
The bundle will go on sale December 7, the same day as Blue Dragon.
Stores are set to begin taking preorders for the limited first-edition package October 18 on a first come, first served basis.
