Microsoft has confirmed that Xbox One outsold the PS4 in the US in December.
It’s the first sign that its next-gen machine could yet recover its market-leading position in the US market and offer a serious challenge to PS4, which has outpaced Microsoft’s console in all other key territories since launch.
"December NPD Group figures released today revealed Xbox One was the number one selling console in the market in the US, selling 908,000 units in December,” the company said.
“Additionally, Xbox 360 continued to see strong momentum with 643,000 units sold in December, putting it in the number three spot overall, and lead for last generation hardware.”
Sony, however, pointed out that PS4 for the time being at least remains the best-selling next-console overall in the US and blamed supply constraints for its December loss at the hands of its rival.
"PlayStation 4 remains the cumulative leader for next gen console sales in the US since the launch on November 15," it countered. "We sold every PS4 available at retail in the US and were out of stock in December due to overwhelming consumer demand."
According to the last available official figures global PS4 sales stand at 4.2m units with Xbox One at 3m.
3DS was the single best selling US console for both December and the entirety of 2013. In addition, Wii U sold more units in December than in any other prior month.
The best selling physical games for 2013 in the US were as follows:
- Grand Theft Auto V (Rockstar)
- Call Of Duty: Ghosts (Activision)
- Madden NFL 25 (EA)
- Battlefield 4 (EA)
- Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (Ubisoft)
- NBA 2K14 (2K Games)
- Call of Duty: Black Ops II (Activision)
- Just Dance 2014 (Ubisoft)
- Minecraft : Xbox 360 Edition (Microsoft)
- 10. Disney Infinity (Disney)
