Xbox One sold 65,917 units in Australia within three days of its launch, according to the NPD Group.
Described by Microsoft as the most successful console launch in Australia's history, the milestone more than doubles the previous record held by the Nintendo Wii, which sold 32,900 during its launch week.
According to Microsoft Australia's Jeremy Hinton, the results are due to Microsoft "listening to the Australian community".
"This led to the inclusion of the Bathurst track in Forza Motorsport 5, entering the Xbox One Racing Team as a wildcard in the 2013 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, through to the launch of local entertainment apps Network Ten's TenPLAY, SBS On Demand, Quickflix and local music, TV and movies within our Xbox apps, right through to TV and voice control support from day one."
Meanwhile, Forza Motorsport 5 was the bestselling Xbox One title in the week following the console's launch.
The news comes amid a shortage of PS4 units in Australia.
"I've never seen demand like we are seeing now with PlayStation 4," Ephraim said in a statement on the day after the console's November 29 launch.
"Even though we are getting more PS4 consoles in before Christmas, our retail partners tell us that they don't expect many to be left on the shelves by the time Christmas comes."
Retailer EB Games said last month that Xbox One stock is likely to deplete in the lead up to Christmas, though Microsoft said in a statement today that it will continue to ship stock to retailers in the lead up to Christmas.
