Square Enix has announced Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, a "brand-new story and world" set for release on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013. Revealed at a Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary Event this morning , Square Enix said the game - the last entry in the "Lightning saga" - will feature the FFXIII heroine in a tense finale as a doomsday clock counts down 13 days until the end of the world. The countdown - a constant presence in the corner of the screen - will tick towards the apocalypse as players make decisions and explore the four islands of new locale Navus Partus, Square Enix explained. Lightning herself will feature customisable looks and combat styles, the publisher added, and the combat system is described as a hybrid of both FFXIII games, with real-time elements and time-based moves that drain the doomsday countdown. Square Enix stopped short of calling the new game an action title but said it is developing Lightning Returns with 'responsive' control input in mind. A trailer for the title was shown off at the Japan event, though it's yet to surface online.
