Games for the Xbox One will not be required to run at a resolution of 1080p or at 60 frames per second.
However, that doesn’t mean that they won’t. Indeed, launch first party title Forza 5 WILL run at top spec
"I believe we're uniquely positioned to deliver on that challenge," Turn 10 Studios' content director John Wendel told GameSpot. "We're a huge epic game that's going to be running at 1080p, 60fps on the next-gen console, so it's an incredible opportunity on one hand, but you have to be incredibly flexible and agile and self-aware on the other hand."
This is the standard that the current generation of machines promised but rarely managed to deliver on. And the risk is that could be the case again with Microsoft not enforcing any minimum requirements for Xbox One software.
"It's important we give creators the best tools to create the best experience possible and I don't think that platform holders can dictate what the internal frame buffer size should be," Microsoft Studios vice president Phil Spencer told Edge magazine, as reported by GameSpot.
"Forza 5 runs at 60 frames per second, but other people will make different trade-offs. Resolution is not the thing that maximises beauty."
Of course, there are plenty who argue that a well-optimised game running at 720p with decent antialiasing and other post-processing effects will look better than an unoptimised 1080p title.
Although they’d be mostly wrong.
