The upcoming DLC characters for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC versions of Street Fighter X Tekken are included on the disc, Capcom has confirmed to MCV.
However, the publisher has responded to accusations of foul playby saying that the move was necessary to ensure that all players, both those who have chosen to buy the DLC and those who have not, are able to play online without technical hiccup.
“The character information and files were intentionally included on retail versions of the PS3 and Xbox 360 game to save hard drive space and to ensure for a smooth transition when the DLC is available, allowing players who choose not to purchase the content the ability to play against players that did,” a Capcom spokesperson told MCV.
“More specifics regarding pricing, dates and other additional exciting DLC plans for Street Fighter X Tekken will be shared at a later date. As a reminder, the retail version of the game will be the only disc-based version consumers will need to own and all future upgrades will come from post-launch DLC.”
What the statement does not address, of course, is the ethical conundrum of asking players to purchase content that they in effect already own but have been prevented from accessing.
However, it must also be pointed out that Capcom came in for a bit of stick for choosing to upgrade previous release Street Fighter IV via a brand new disc-based release. The measures put in place with Street Fighter X Tekken do at least ensure that this will not be the case again.
