Multiplayer game director talks adding story to AC's multiplayer

When multiplayer was added to Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, some were surprised to find the mode well-done and fitting with the series. Multiplayer for the upcoming Assassin's Creed III is being done by Ubisoft Annecy, who is crafting its own lore for the mode. Ubisoft Annecy game director Damien Kieken told Xbox World magazine (via CVG) how the series' primary antagonist, the Templar-backed Abstergo Corporation, fits in with multiplayer.
"The multiplayer is so big today that it's already a game on its own. We've been given the right to develop the Abstergo storyline since the beginning, which is a big responsibility," said Kieken.
The Abstergo Corporation has created Abstergo Entertainment, allowing the world to experience what was previously kept to Desmond and other subjects. This media outlet is set as the backdrop for the game's multiplayer and allows for a persistent persona.
"Abstergo Entertainment will give you insights on the company's future initiatives by granting you access to files and information on products that will soon hit the market," said Keiken. "As you progress in the game and level up your character, you access these files and videos. Every month you'll have new challenges to unlock new content that will continue the storyline throughout the year."
Assassin's Creed III and its revamped multiplayer mode are scheduled for an Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 release on October 30, 2012 in North America and October 31, 2012 in Europe.
